Reservations are necessary here. I left a VM and they responded within a couple hours. We had the heirloom tomatoes with burrata cheese, excellent! Entrees: crab gnocchi: also excellent, lots of lump crab meat, not shredded and a generous amount. Husband had pork chop with garlic mashed potatoes. Food and service was top notch. It's pricey but with it for the quality and portion size. One of the rare times we didn't regret paying a bit more because the food was SO good!! Usually it seems these highly rated eateries are so expensive and we leave disappointed because the food was tired, not fresh or imaginative and grossly expensive for what it was, yet the place gets hi ratings....never could I'd figure that out. Honestly, maybe our expectations were too high for Castaways. We'd tried to get in a while back and couldn't (all booked up) so we booked way ahead of time this visit. For one, the ambiance is great. The environment and layout evoke a strong memory of one of my favorite PDX places - 3 Doors Down. Service is good, the atmosphere is lively but not overwhelming for a small restaurant. Unfortunately for two of our three group, the meals were underwhelming, especially for what the cost was (approx $36-ish/plate). My dish was the short ribs, I don't recall specifically what the other less-satisfied user had. Our impressions were similar though - a plate of meats surrounding mashed potatoes (mine) and rice (his) which, while filling, wasn't particularly flavorful. On the other hand, Our person who had the pork chops really enjoyed them. Hit and miss, I guess. There's a lot of great dining in Canon Beach. We'll keep looking. read more

Dining in Cannot Beach is hit and miss (mainly miss). I can't recommend many restaurants, but Castaways is always a solid option and a favorite of ours for some delicious, albeit overly expensive food. Not sure if policy has changed (call ahead to find out) but reservations are same day only via phone and open up at noon. They are quickly booked up, so if you miss the same day noon reservation window look elsewhere for dinner. Its a smaller restaurant, but has a fun drink and dinner menu. Sure I'll pretend I'm somewhere tropical in the middle of a blustery Oregon beach day. We always enjoy the food and drink, although I think its very pricey and I wouldn't head here if it was in Portland thanks to the price point. However, since we're not in Portland and there's limited good dining options in Cannon Beach we always try to dine here when in town, as its pretty tasty fare. Definitely recommend! read more

My husband & I read some good reviews on Yelp & decided to give Castaways a try while on vacation at Cannon Beach. The restaurant is casual inside & had a small bar as you walked in. We were greeted with a smile & told to seat ourselves. We had no expectations for this meal we were planning on sharing, but our dining experience was pure heaven as it could have been my last meal. We shared a crab cake that was fresh & perfect for two. The menu reads "crab cakes" but it only comes as one crab cake & it was served with a delicious purple slaw. The Lobster Bisque was homemade & out of this world. We shared the Caribbean Style Jumbo Prawns (4) that were delicious with rice & vegetables. To top off our fabulous dinner we shared a piece of Butterscotch/Caramel bread pudding with raisins. I told our waiter that dessert was better than making babies! The ambiance was nice. Small intimate place. The lamb appetizer was great. I will have to try and replicate it at home. The seafood entoufee was a great spin-off o the classic crayfish dish. The large scallops and prawns were excellent, though I did choose it with a 2 heat level, but that heat level perfectly accented the seafood flavors without dominating the dish. The wife very much enjoyed her Cajun prawns, but was disappointed that the cilantro in the dush was not disclosed. Pre-covid, I would have given the service a 3. However, the world has changed. As the boomers retire, there the folks in the job pool has decreased. This is exacerbated in the hospitality industry, especially in he oft season. Many folks improved thier skills during covid, and the student Job pool does not exist in the off season. The night we were there there was snow in the forecast so everyplace we went was short staff. Castaways was working with a staff of 3 instead of 5, and the band canceled where we went for like music. Learn to go with the flow. Staffing sucks, so quite feeling so entitled. Highly recommended. The ambience is good though not a romantic setting. They really need to find people who want to work in this city because they were clearly understaffed on the night we visited. Those provisos accepted, this chef may be the most inventive and experimental in the north coast. Castaways is, in our experience, sadly no longer the same restaurant we've previously enjoyed so much. Perhaps it was a change with the executive chef or another key player. It's just not at the same level of quality in almost all areas -- food, service and menu are now all subpar. The atmosphere is the same as it has been for a number of years (since they moved into the new building). Menu -- the flair and eclectic mix of the previous menu is gone. Had the menu been posted online, we may not have even dined at Castaways. Food -- generic and bland is, unfortunately, also an apt description of the food as well. The sole? So encrusted that the flavor of the fish was completely masked. Making the dish even worse was that the lemon sauce had nearly no flavor with barely a hint of lemon. The lemon sauce was so faint that it made the flavor of the breading on the sole all the more pronounced making the dish completely unbalanced. The stroganoff was not any better. The desserts were even worse. For example, the fresh peach cobbler was basically a small 2" by 3" by about 1/2" thick bit of what tasted like a cake biscuit over an incredibly thin layer (1/4") of peaches. The entire dish was buried in heaping mounds of whip cream, which seemed like a failed attempt to make up for the lack of any substance in the dish. The saddest attempt at dessert I've ever experienced in any restaurant anywhere. Service -- uncomfortably bad. read more

This dinner was delicious! It's all outdoor seating and limited so in the time of Covid make sure you make a reservation if you want to eat here. They have a good selection of local bottled beers to choose from. For dinner I had the filet, it was cooked to a perfect medium. It came with vegetables and mashed potatoes. Hoity toity place. Refused to serve us? due to being "fully booked and short staffed" when we asked for a beer on the completely open outside patio that sits 40+ people. Frankly, there are other ways to be polite while still conveying that information. We just wanted a chill beer outside with our kids around 7pm and were rudely treated. The couple times we've visited Cannon Beach, my husband and I make it a point to grab dinner at Castaways. When we went here recently during COVID-19, we were excited to see Castaways was still open and also offering curbside pickup! I saw on social media they were doing scheduled pickup, so we called around 4:30PM with a scheduled pickup time of 7PM. 1) Special Hamburger Helper - YUMMY. I love stroganoff so when I saw this on their menu for the day, I knew I had to order it. They included plenty of beef pieces and portion was overall great (enough for a snack later). 2) Lasagna - My husband loved the lasagna and also had enough for a snack later! 3) Wings - I forget the exact name of the wings they had but it included an asian-flavored coleslaw that had a nick spicy kick to it. When we arrived at the restaurant to pick up our order, they were very prompt in coming out with our order. When we placed our order they asked what car we'd be arriving in and had us pay over the phone so we wouldn't have to deal with that upon arrival. It was very quick and easy and I can't wait to come here again next time we visit Cannon Beach! read more

Since it was my last night in town, and I had been camping all weekend. I decided to do some takeout for my last night here and ultimately decided upon Castaways after reading all the glowing and positive reviews. The communication between myself and the restaurant was good, with them helping me with any questions I had. I ended up ordering the filet Mignon with mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables. After receiving the order, still hot too! I dug right in as I was starving! Well unfortunately the meal resulted in some pretty heavy food poisoning not even a hour later after consuming it all. Probably the worst way to spend my last night in town, sick as a dog into the very early hours of the morning. Very disappointed with the rather bad taste left in my mouth. read more

They have all kinds of tropical drinks for those wanting a tiki bar vibe. Don't get me started on the food. Meaning it is all perfection from the flavoring to the presentation. It's so pretty you don't even want to each it but just take lots of pictures. I highly recommend the scallop on polenta. The one that I had they used a popcorn flavor! But it was so insanely good! One of Cannon Beach Best Restaurants If you crave a spicy meal from the Caribbean, this is the place in Cannon Beach. The food is always exceptional. They've been a stable for excellent and consistent cuisine for 14 years and I have to say they are one of the two best places in town to eat. Service is prompt but like everywhere, waitstaff is in short supply do you might have to wait a bit to be approached depending. However, regardless of how busy they get, your food delivery will not be affected because they know how to work their floor. Dining inside is nice although it can get a wee tad loud, as floors and ceiling do nothing to absorb sounds. Dining outside on the patio is wonderful in the summer. This being Cannon Beach, don't be surprised by your bill especially if you have a few of their amazing house drinks and dessert. Really a cute place with a wonderful menu and great ambiance. The menu is actually quite varied so don't let the cajun/creole description scare you away. There were only two people serving and handling the bar which made for more delays then I would have liked, but we're hoping for better service next time we go. After spending time in Mt. Hood, our family of four was weary and hungry from traveling all day. I had my eyes set on Castaways since it was a short drive from picturesque Cannon Beach. The pictures and reviews naturally made me bookmark the restaurant in anticipation. About a week prior to our visit, I placed a reservation and looking back, I'm glad we did this. Upon arriving at 6:30, I gave them my name and we were immediately seated by our hostess. As the dinner crowd began to trickle in, I noticed the restaurant was getting close to capacity. A sure sign this place was popular with not only the tourists, but the locals as well. Moments later, our server arrived and greeted us. She asked if we would like anything to drink and my husband and I decided to get a cocktail. He ordered a Zombie and I got the Blood Orange Margarita. Both were excellent, large, and made well. My only regret was not getting a second drink! Our server did a good job guiding us through the menu and highlighting the specials for the evening. We went with one of her suggestions and ordered the scallop appetizer. It was sublime! The perfectly seared scallop paired well with the citrus relish. It was so delicate, and the colorful presentation was spot on! Our main dishes for the evening were Mary's Free Range Chicken Breast and the Seafood Linguine. Aesthetically, the chicken had a nice brown color and the garnishments were pleasing. The chicken gravy was delightful; however, the chicken itself was a tad salty. Despite this issue, I enjoyed the cream cheese mashed potatoes and veggie side dishes. My husband had the better of our two entrees. The linguine was an ample portion with tender pasta. The rich, red pepper lobster cream sauce gave this entrée a nice spicy kick while the grated Grana Padano cheese atop the pasta provided an extra level of complexity. The dish had plenty of Maine lobster meat and jumbo prawns which was a big plus. I tried a few bites simply because I couldn't have just one. We thoroughly enjoyed this meal and highly recommend ordering this entree. The service overall was very good. Our server was courteous and the chef even made the rounds, visiting each table to make sure everything was satisfactory. We left very happy. Pricing was moderately expensive with dishes averaging around ($23-30+). Overall, dress code leans more toward smart casual but jeans and shorts are accepted. We didn't see a lot of families with young children and the crowd consists of a slightly older set (40's-50s).
