Fesenjan. A sweet and sour stew with walnuts and pomegranate. Simply amazing.
John S.

The day before I popped into this place, a friend told me about a Persian dish called Fesenjan. It is stewed chicken with walnuts and pomegranate served over rice. Serendipitously I came across the Caspian Grill and sure enough they had it on their menu. It was fantastic. It was bright and rich and full of depth. The restaurant was clean, open and inviting, and the staff were super friendly.

Love this place and so glad we found a Persian restaurant with such great food. The chicken and koobideh kabob were both so juicy and flavorful and honestly so good. I also loved the Persian decor and little touches throughout the restaurant because it made the space feel even more warm and authentic. The owner was super kind and welcoming which made the experience even better. We will definitely be back and I have already been recommending it to friends. They also offer catering which is amazing and we will absolutely keep them in mind for future events.

Incredibly delicious. The owner is very well educated on absolutely everything on the menu, has good insight in what we're about to pick out, including secret menu options. The place is very peaceful.

I've never been to Iran. But I love the crisped up rice at the bottom of a pan, such as those found at the bottom of bibimbap bowls or clay pot rice dishes. Here, Tahdig is purposefully made as a menu item. It's nicely brown and quite crunchy. Previously, I had only ordered items to-go, stopping in briefly to pickup. But one day, I decided to stop in for an early dinner. Upon entry it is eerily quiet, but you'll notice to decor, rugs, metallic objects. For sitting, pick a table anywhere. The menus are located under the glass. Read, decide, and pick what you want. If it comes with rice, do you want regular, barberry, raisin carrot? Nabbed some Ghomeh Sabzi. Those dried limes give off a nice bitter and sour flavor. +1 for the Tadig that comes it, and I got it with barberry rice to have a nice savory and sour rice base. Also grabbed the mixed koobideh--the minced skewered meats are great. Comes with JamesFarm salted butter, a grilled tomato, and mint. Pretty delicious. Sprinkled with a nice dusting of sumac to provide that nice zesty and tangy flavor. Food comes served on paper plates, but they do provide silverware. I'll have to make a mental note to come here more often.

First time our family tried Peruvian and Iranian cuisine, and it was absolutely wonderful. This place is truly a hidden gem--we'll definitely be back on our next road trip. Dr. G, thank you again for sharing your wisdom with us. We genuinely appreciated the conversation.

Great food & sweet man behind the counter. Ambiance feels true to the food experience. Would go back again.

We already love this restaurant because the food is perfection. We had them cater a large party and you can tell they just love what they do. The way they put together the dishes is a work of art!! The guests absolutely loved the food.

Week two of three of my fruit, vegetables and grains fast. Fortunately, Austin has a plethora of vegan / vegetarians restaurants to satisfy my fast cravings. Therefore, I decided to try Caspian grill, at the SE corner of research and Oak Knoll. Pictures of lentil soup has been dancing in my head. In addition, I love beets and those were apart of my vegan fantasy. Both dishes had fragrant tastes with a bit of vinegar flavoring...quite different in a very good way. In an effort to support sustainability and keep costs down, food is served on paper plates. Sometimes one may expect a culinary experience and get a bonus. Today was one of those days - culinary experience + cultural immersion. This restaurant was eclectic with some unique artifacts - copper soldiers, roses water container and a tiled wall that looked like a Persian rug most from Iran. Sean my server was very generous in sharing insights regarding the pieces...very enjoyable! While it was an an early dinner, I was the only person in the restaurant. Important to note the online menu is a bit lower in price than online menu in the restaurant. During these economic times, it's important to support small businesses. Give them a try...

The service here was so kind, he was a very nice guy who told us about the restaurants family business. He gave us some great recommendations and asked us how we were doing. We got the eggplant flatbread which had a bunch of yummy toppings on it. I got the lamb shawarma salad which was delicious!! It's a simple salad with really tender lamb off the bone. It's unlike other lamb, this one is very soft and had big pieces. We also got the lamb shawarma wrap which had the same big pieces of tender lamb that melted in your mouth. That combination with the veggies, fresh pita, and sauces was so good. We'd definitely come back here again!! Perfect spot to fill up and feel good after!

Fesenjan. Chicken in pomegranate and walnut stew. With a mountain of rice. Excellent.

This is literally my favorite restaurant in Austin. I have eaten a lot of middle eastern food in various (western) countries. I know it well. What's so great about this place is all of the non traditional stews you don't get just anywhere. I literally get a different meal every time and have always loved them. Thanks Caspian Grill!

the dishes were kind of dry in general. the lamb shank was a bit tough, we were expecting fall off the bone tender. Flavors were bland and lacked seasoning. even the Au Jus was not tasty. It really needed a side salad at the very least. Spicy-ness was zero.

Everything is absolutely delicious and freshly prepared. Vegan & gluten free options. Full of flavor. A must for mediterranean lovers. So many options. Can't say enough good things. Needs more customers!!!

Shawn was very nice and the food was very tasty. Thank you for the wonderful dinner. We were there a little past close, but it was no problem.

However, I'll think about coming here again because I didn't feel a good vibe with the service. We had to go look for someone to show us the table even though the place was empty for early lunch. Then, to get drinks or even the order was a problem. It took so much longer than usual. Our waitress was rude, and seemed bothered that we showed up. Then someone else came as the waitress and she was preoccupied with other tables and barely checked on us. A regular lunch which would've been one hour became almost two because of the lack of service. My friend had to stand and look for someone to give us a box to take out the good we couldn't eat because it was getting late and also to get the check because No one came in to check on us at all. It was almost like pulling teeth to get a regular service let alone good service. Again, the food was really good, and that alone was the only positive.

I've only ever ordered takeout at the counter so I can't speak to the dine-in experience, but the service is smooth and efficient. Dessert is ready in about 5 minutes and food orders during busy dinner hours have taken around 20 minutes, which honestly wasn't bad at all given how packed they get. Everything is always packaged nicely and securely, and the food is consistently delicious. They also carry other sweets worth trying like honey cakes and pistachio baklava. On the savory side, some dishes I've really enjoyed are the Mezze Platter, Beef and Lamb Doner, and Ribeye Steak Shish Kebab. It's not super loud but the front can get a bit overstimulating when it's busy, so if you're not a fan of crowds I'd recommend coming outside of peak hours. This most recent time, I didn't realize until I was home that they forgot to pack one of the baklava cheesecakes I'd ordered. They were able to refund me over the phone when I couldn't come back to pick it up. Highly recommend!

Governor's Mixed Kebap Plate ($26.95): The plate came with chicken, köfte meatballs, ground lamb kebap (adana), ezme, pickled red cabbage, onion, rice, and a sauce. I chose the crazy grain rice which is a mix of black rice and lentils, and the spicy harissa sauce. The ezme, pickled red cabbage, and adana were my favorites. The chicken was good too and the köfte meatballs were my least favorite of the bunch. The pita bread was also fire and super fresh, honestly one of the best I've had when it's heated up and warm. The box was completely packed and was easily enough for 2 meals or to share between 2 people. Zucchini Yogurt with Fresh Dill and Walnuts ($3.25): Not a fan. It had a sour aftertaste with a citrusy zing that made me think this went bad. Chicken Lemon Orzo Soup ($6.99): Came with chickpeas, shredded chicken, and orzo. It was really yummy, especially paired with some sourdough bread I had on hand.

It's one of those places that's reliable and feels pretty consistent, knowing you're going to leave happy and full after eating here. The two times we've been there, theres always plenty of seating and are able to walk right in. It's a walk in and seat yourself experience and then you pay upon leaving. The staff keeps the dining area and buffet line consistently stocked and clean. They even provide hand sanitizer and gloves for you. Even when foot traffic picked up while we were there, the food was replenished quickly and didn't look picked over. Now let's talk food...Everything tastes fresh, well-seasoned, and like it was made with care instead of just being "buffet food" an under seasoned. The variety is also amazing, and it's easy to build a plate for pretty much any type of diet whether you're keto, high protein, balanced, veggie-forward, vegan, etc... Some of our favorite dishes we keep coming back for: Shredded beef (SO good), Baked fish (tender and not fishy), Garlic baked chicken (wonderful crispy skin), Fried chicken, Baked kafta, Kafta kebab, Gyro meat, Roasted cauliflower, Eggplant, Greek salad, Fatoush, Kale Caesar salad, Zaatar pizza, Cheese pizza (pro tip: top it with shredded beef- a life changing buffet hack), Rice with lentils, Rice with mixed veggies. For the quality, variety and amount of food you get, this is easily one of the best deals in the city! It's rare to find a buffet that's both affordable and consistently this good! If I had one small wish, it would be for desserts to match how strong the rest of the food is. They're not bad, just a little more "fine" compared to how amazing everything else is. I've seen another Dimassi's (I think in Cali) that had a frozen yogurt machine and I'd LOVE to see that here because it would be the perfect finish! Make a cup and then crumble up some baklava on it! Overall we've LOVED it here and we'll absolutely keep coming back! Great food, clean, consistent, and worth it every time!

Between me, my husband, and my mom, we have a lot of overlap in what we like to eat, but we also have some pretty distinct preferences, and Demassi's is one of those places where that works. My husband really loves Middle Eastern / Mediterranean food. I generally do not. I tend to find the meats too dry, I don't particularly like the spice profile, and I also find a lot of dishes in that category to be overly sour. It's hard to explain, but there's often a sharp, tangy acidity that I don't enjoy. For whatever reason, I don't have that issue at Demassi's at all. Here my husband can get his fix of dry, spiced meats, while I'm happy eating from the huge selection of rice dishes, cooked veggies, and soups. As far as protein goes, I actually really like the fish here, so I almost never eat the meat and still leave satisfied. It usually feels like a healthy pescatarian day for me, which I like. Then there's my mom, who just loves the abundance and variety of a buffet. She's happiest when she can sample a little bit of everything, build plates with lots of small bites, and then go back for more. Demassi's is perfect for that. On top of all of this, it's very reasonably priced, especially for lunch or on weeknights. It's always clean, the staff is consistently courteous, and they are really on top of bussing tables, which matters a lot to me at a buffet. Dirty dishes piling up are never an issue here. Overall, it's a solid, reliable spot for us and a place we're always happy to suggest when we're trying to please multiple people with different tastes.

They were happy to chat with us without forcing conversation. As a group of 3 we ordered the traditional hummus, whipped bulgarian feta, beet tahini, the cucumber labne, falafel, pan fried halloumi and baklava apple pie for dessert. The group was not what I would call big eaters so we had leftovers (we likely should have ordered 1 less dish), they recommend 2-3 dishes per person (dips and meze). The hummus was decent, but I would not feel the need to order it again, the bulgarian feta was delicious and was tied with best dish of the night with the falafel. The falafel had perfect texture, crispy on the outside without cutting your mouth and soft on the inside. The beet tahini just tasted like beets and nothing else so I would not get that again. The cucumber labne was tasty and the halloumi was the only dish I took a bite of and would not take another. The texture of the cheese was rubbery, so despite having a crunchy exterior and delicious sauce underneath, I found the halloumi to be extremely disappointing. I am not a chef, but if they simply grilled the halloumi and served it on top of the sauce I think it would be much better. Desserts are not my thing but my friends enjoyed it even though they admitted the baklava apple pie was painfully sweet. I liked that it came with labne ice cream to make it a bit different. Overall it was a nice meal, the ambiance is modern and clean and the service was fantastic. A good spot for a nice dinner out.
