This was definitely a unique restaurant, as the train cars have been turned into a diner like atmosphere. Our server was really nice and the food was good, but the entrées are extremely overpriced for what you get. My meal was $25 for chicken, green beans and mashed potatoes. The green beans were good and the chicken wasn't bad, just a little tough in some places. I didn't like the mashed potatoes-the texture was gritty and they had way too much butter. My husband had soup, salad, and 1/2 sandwich for $15. Reasonably priced and he liked everything. They have a nice store in the middle of the restaurant and some hand made items. Staff were very friendly. The lady at the front was so personable and chatted with us for a while when we left. We took a ride on a train without going anywhere. We enjoyed a meal inside a train car converted into a restaurant. The restaurant is directly beside the hotel. Ask for a window seat. The view is beautiful. We watched the train take passengers several times during our meal. The menu includes red Birch Beer, my favorite soda. My breakfast was okay. The roasted potatoes aren't made fresh. They are delivered in frozen cubes and warmed. They weren't cooked evenly. They were good without being great. The eggs were yummy. Hubby liked his eggs & scrapple. Our server was dressed as a train conductor. We enjoyed the decor and theme. The gift shop had several railroad related items for sale. We were staying at the train caboose motel and this restaurant is on the same property. We had dinner here the first evening and breakfast the following morning. It's in a an old train car and it's cozy and has cool touches like old light fixtures and large windows. The service was great both times. The food was better than expected. We were seated at windows both times and everyone enjoyed watching the activity in the nearby Strasburg Railroad trainyard. We saw several locomotives be moved around. We also saw a few Amish go past in their horse and buggies. The highlight for the adults was that they had beer and wine--including their own brewed beer. I enjoyed the Red Caboose Ale and my husband thought the Iron Horse Stoudt was pretty tasty. I tried the Caboose burger and really enjoyed it. The quality of the beef was good, it was done to med-rare as I requested, and the mushrooms were cooked nicely. The fries were also very good. My husband got the shepherd's pie and liked it. They have a menu for 'little engineers' that has many items kids enjoy. Breakfast was equally good and the portions were sizable. Prices were fairly typical for the Lancaster area. This is my third time coming staying at Red Caboose and each time we have had breakfast or dinner at the restaurant. Service has been ok. A 45 minute wait is a bit ridiculous. Each time it is awkward when they ask if I have a third person coming though. Why is it so weird for a Mom and son to have a meal together? Don't appreciate that question each time. read more

This place used to be a lot better. We went Thursday night around 6pm no wait to be seated. The male server must have been new. Definitely needs more training. We ordered their version is Mozz sticks and 2 burgers with fries. 35 mins later the burgers finally come out. The mozzarella sticks never came out. When questioned I was told they forgot to make them and they will be out in a few. Appetizers should not come out after the main dish. We ended up cancelling the Mozz sticks, the waiter gave them to us anyway. But there was no way they just came out of the fryer as they were Luke warm. So as your dining, the sounds & commotion associated with the gift shop fills your head. Kids crying as they're told no they can't have something, to people yelling across the shop, "hey look at this...!" All in all in was a good experience. Crowded and the restaurant had a 15-20 minute wait (which I think is to make you browse the gift shop, but that's my opinion). I had the Caboose Burger and my side chick had the soup-salad-sandwich combo. The burger was awesome. Compliments to the cook on that one. Having breakfast in an old rail car while watching the excursion trains from Strasburg railroad go by is pretty neat if you like trains. You also can watch the Amish till their fields depending on the season,although that can be pretty dusty too. The gift shop before the restaurant is loaded with rail fan options and local items. Spend some time to check it out if you need to wait for a table or before you leave. The breakfast itself was delicious. Staff was nice, food was quick and hot. Cool little gift shop/restaurant combo attached to the Red Caboose Motel. We only stopped in for dessert since all of the local ice cream spots are closed on Sundays. We were seated in one of the two dining cars they have set up with table seating. The inside tables look out into the gift shop, but the outer tables give you a nice view of the area and train crossing so shoot for the outer. Our server was very nice and on top of everything. Gooey molasses, wet bottom variety and a slice of Grandma Peiffer's Blue-Ribbon Crumb Cake $5.95 - Light and fluffy with a delicious, buttery crumb topping. First place winner in the State Farm Show. Baked fresh with love by owner, Kat! The Shoo-Fly was delicious and as described. The sweet and tart molasses mixed in well with the crumb topping. It was a meal on it's own so it's good for sharing! I'm not an authority on crumb cake, but to me their recipe wasn't what I'm used to. It was certainly light and fluffy along with moist, spongey and a bit buttery. In my humble opinion the crumbs on top lacked the flavor I'm used to from other bakeries which lean more towards a blurry line with a coffee cake/streusel type. I used the whipped cream and fruit syrup drizzle that accompanied the slice which helped bring it some extra flavor. My mother enjoyed the Pecan Pie and couldn't finish it. It was a huge portion. My son had his first Birch Beer Float $7.95 and was in heaven. I'd definitely repeat to try something from the kitchen and the view of the country out of the window/sitting in a train car is a bonus. We walked around the connected store/gift shop to check out their swag and local/train related items. Nothing really caught our eyes so off we went. Was driving to a Suite and happened to see the billboard advertisement for Casey Jones. When I stopped I took some time to check it out online and saw it was a railcar themed restaurant and was open later than other restaurants, closing around 8pm. Seemed like something new we wanted to try, so after shopping we headed over there. Noticed it was in the railroad area, passing the Mod train museum I bad been trying to go to. Restaurant was a little hard to find as it's inside the Train hotel. But once inside signs to the restaurant made it easy to find. We got there around 6:30pm and I would say it was half filled. Ordering was easy, food cane out in a timely manner. The Reuben sandwich Ibgot was very giod. Hot off the grill and plenty of pastrami. You have a choice of chips or fries. We've seen signs for this place while driving in the area. I got the meatloaf, it was good just too soft for my liking. My wife got the bbq pulled pork sandwich, it was delicious! We also got the corn fritters, they were delicious, must dip them in the syrup. I would give this place 3.5 stars because the service was not good, our waitress took forever to come to us in the beginning, then did not come back when we needed refills, we sat there for 10 minutes thirsty. Eating in a train car (one from 1917 and the other 1920), I mean how cool is that?! The ambiance was great. If you sit in the newer car you can see the buggies as they go by. The food is just ok. Not bad but nothing special. We ate both dinner and breakfast in the restaurant, eating in both train cars. It was a nice experience, the staff was very friendly and the food was served quicky. It's convenient if you stay at the caboose motel which we did. It's a fun experience dining in a real railroad dining cart especially for kids. Staff is extremely friendly and want to make your visit a good one. We really like their breakfast. The pancakes are huge. Overall all their servings for all meals are large. The dinner food is not as good as breakfast. Would say meals are average. They also have a bar and mixed drinks. They have railway cars there that they rent out as hotel rooms. There is also a restored barn that can be rented for specials events and they put shows on there as well. read more

I had the small house salad with grilled chicken, my husband had the teriyaki salmon with rice and veggies. There were very good. My daughter had the burger. The kids burger is on a slider bun which we didn't think would be sufficient so we had to order her an adult size burger. Cheese was extra and French fries were $4 added. So her meal cost $20, which was not fun considering she only ate half of the burger. We should have just gotten her the slider version with fries for only $8. Lesson learned. Cute atmosphere. We were seated quickly on a late Sunday afternoon. There were only 2 other couples in the dining car so not sure why hostess seated us directly next to 1 of the couples. I asked to move seats. Our food was ok. I ordered a cup of chicken corn soup I've heard so much about and quite frankly I've had better soup from a can. I also had the pot roast dinner. Parts of my veggies were cold like they had just been heated up. My husband had the chicken dinner and thought it was ok. For the price of the meals, a dinner roll would have made a nice addition. My nix of a star, almost two was first the soup - the corn chowder was very bland. I hit with salt three times, still dull flavored. Next, I wanted fries with the burger instead of the chips but I insist on value too. At 17.00, the burger really needs to come with fries. Beware of the desserts too, yes to ice cream - one scoop with pie will nearly double the cost. All prices are listed but if you don't look, you could easily add an extra 12-15$ per person in upcharges My advice, skip the appetizer, go full hog on the burger with fries. Aside from the upcharge let down, I had a great experience - recommended for the train car alone. read more

Great food, great service, awesome people and having lunch in a caboose was a first for my family. No complaints whatsoever. We will be back next year and we may even stay in one of the cabooses as our sleeping quarters. Truthfully, I can't wait. read more

We were pleasantly surprised at dinner here. Having been there before it was usually good but fell over with the wine service which was still the case. This time we had a very good service though the server was lacking some menu knowledge but was proactive in finding out what we needed to know. As for the food it was a home run this time. As always the corn fritters were awesome. The big surprise was the ribs. I had rather low expectations and was surprised as to how good they were. We had breakfast at Casey Jones yesterday. I had the western omelette with home fries and wheat toast. My wife had the French toast. Our food was very good. The French toast was crispy with a bit of a citrus taste. The omelette and home fries were very good. I had a side of scrapple as well. It came to the table exactly as I ordered, "crispy". It was very tasty and locally sourced. As you walk through the lobby at the end of every hall and around every corner there's a surprise. The gift shop is very quaint and fun. The new saloon is maybe the biggest surprise. It's beautiful like walking back into the Old West. The dinning car was beautiful and our waitress Christy was pleasant, helpful and loved her job. There is a petting zoo outside along with Amish buggy tours. If you're looking for a little get away; book a night in one of their Caboose suites or just go for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Unfortunately, we waited 30mins on a Saturday (at around 6pm) to be seated at a stuffy and dirty table. I felt bad for the server, even though she unprofessionally told us she was only new for a few weeks. Where was management? Our drinks were subpar. The food was 4/10 at best. My sandwich was soggy and not edible. Left most of it on the plate without eating it. My kids barely finished their KRAFT Mac n cheese cause it was hard and over microwaved I'm assuming. Another reason is because the server forgot the dressing to one of my parties salad. Not one negative thing for me to write! From waiting on the beautifully landscaped outside (with "real" running trains!) and deck, to our actual meal, a tremendous experience! Debbie, our server, was pleasant and very attentive, even with being short staffed. Our meals were all very good and boasted huge portions (our dog very happily benefitted). We had: Teriyaki salmon (Debbie subbed the rice and vegetables with a salad for me), 1/2 rack of ribs, homemade Lancaster, PA, meatloaf, and a Jack chicken dish.
