I thought the price was exceptionally high considering the quality of ingredients they cook with, think: CHEAP! The carnitas are top notch, but for my money, nothing beats El Mobley. It's everything you could ever want on one plate, especially if you ask them to add refried beans to it. The management came to our table with a bunch of excuses but offered no compensation. We had to get another waitress to get us water and our waitress went missing for half an hour. High quality food and service. A little bit of a background story: my husband and I lived in BCS for a few years but moved away in 2014. We found ourselves in Bryan yesterday for work and decided to stop in. We used to come here to get a pitcher of Memo Punch. We came in around 4pm which is a bit of a slow time for almost any restaurant. We asked for Memo Punch and were told that they may be out of it at the time. The chips and salsa were good, but not outstanding in any way (not really a negative comment - they met expectations), the queso was ok (plain Jane and also not outstanding), ground beef taco meat was dry, and cheese enchiladas were mediocre. Overall, this place has standard, predictable Tex-Mex fare without any punch. Actually, it should be stated that the Charro beans were *excellent*, particularly in comparison to everything else on our plates. My family and I are long time Casa Rodriguez customers but today, service was unacceptable. We waited 10-15 mins before anyone ever came by to get our drink order. Then we waited another 10 for our drinks. I could understand if the place was packed, but it was half empty. The staff was more than capable of accommodating the number of customers. We ordered a queso but waited so long for chips that the queso was hard. Sat without napkins and silverware until our food was cold. Piccadillo plate was good with the exception of the cold beans. Carne Guisada plate did not impress. A young busboy/waiter carried a high chair past our table and accidentally hit me with the high chair but didn't bother to apologize or ask I if was okay. I've only been here once, and I found the food pretty good, and the service stellar. The waiter was very kind and personable, and answered my queries without making me feel like a burden. And right at the next table were the owners. The whole time I was there, people would stop and talk to them, or even sit a spell. This place is good but a bit pricey in my opinion. Their fajitas are amazing!! My wife and I have only been to the restaurant twice but have ordered out a few times since COVID started in early 2020. Anyway, we recently ate lunch there and ordered a large guacamole salad that, on the menu, says it's $8. While it tasted good, my problem is what they charged me on the final bill. On the bill, it says they charged me $9.49 instead of the $8 listed on the menu. All the other menu items we ordered were at menu price as advertised. However, while this may not be a big deal to some people, it is to me because I'm the kind of person that's not willing to pay more than I want to pay especially when the price is clearly advertised on the menu. So, I took that extra $1.49 out of the waiters tip. Nothing against the waiter but no business is going to get away with trying to squeeze extra money out of me that I'm not willing to pay. OH so good! My burrito was made perfectly! I love it when the sauce and cheese the is on top of your burrito extends to the edges of the plate! I think I was able to almost finish the entire huge burrito simply because it was so good my fork wouldn't let me put it down! While out and about today we stopped in Casa Rodriguez for lunch. So many things were wonderful. Nice open seating. Plenty of wait staff. As soon as we were seated we were presented with hot chips and the most awesome salsa I've had in ages. The salsa had a fresh tomato flavor, onion, cilantro and then there was a nice warmth starting in the back of the mouth. Not over powering at all. The husband who doesn't really care for salsa ate 1 1/2 bowls all by himself. Really the chips and salsa were bottomless. The husband got a chimichanga, our daughter got the El Tomas which had so much of this and that I can't even remember all that was on the plates, yes plates. I got the Casa Rod combo plate which had cheese enchiladas and a beef taco. The rice is the bomb. I could have eaten a plate of rice and nothing else. The daughter had the leftovers towed home. Next time I'm getting the brisket tacos. Yes, there will be a next time, and a next and a next. The waiter, damn wish I'd have gotten his name, was super awesome. The husband asked for a to go box as our daughters food was set before her. The waiter said " We have one rule here, you must eat all your food or you can't leave." The husband and I chuckled. I've heard so many good things about this place so finally gave in and gave it a chance last week. My friend and I got there at around 7 and it wasn't busy at all. There were 10 plus tables open but we were seated right between 2 tables with people. There chips and salsa were fine. I asked for the green salsa and was impressed. It was so spicy but so good. I ordered the fried avocado and my friend ordered the quesadillas. He said his was fine. I was completely disappointed in my meal. The description says that it's a fried avocado stuffed with beef (what I got) and queso. There was no queso on mine and very little beef. I wasn't impressed at all and I love avocados. Now onto the service...like I said earlier there were probably people at 5 tables and staff everywhere but the service was horrible. It took more than 10 minutes to place our order, our waitress never came to check on us, never offered more water when my cup was completely empty, and we had to wait awhile after we finished eating to get our check. We have enjoyed Casa Rod for years. Dining in has been fine. We have had a couple of experiences with takeout, though, that leave us planning to go elsewhere. Both were occasions we were having groups in our home and placed fairly large orders. Both times, we got home, only to find items missing...and significant things, like the rice and beans, condiments, and most recently, an entire serving of fajitas. With a house of people to feed. We did contact a manager, who credited us for the missing order, but it still left us without the food we had planned on having. Take the good and bad reviews with a grain of salt and a shot of tequila. This is a good home-style Mexican food place. Is it going to be the best you've ever had? Probably not, but you'll leave full and satisfied. I find it funny when people get all pissed in the reviews. It's not like they paid more than $30 for a dinner for two. Sometimes I wonder if those people somehow deluded themselves in to believing that there isn't a difference between high dollar places and less expensive ones. Get the bacon, it's always crisp. Underline that. IT'S ALWAYS CRISP. Soggy bacon is so gross and has become standard at other places, but not this one. Casa Rod is hands-down my favorite Mexican food place in BCS. I was at A&M from 2014-2018 and this place never failed me. Their margaritas are delicious (and pack a punch), their happy hour/meal specials can't be beat, and it's just an all around fun time while you're there. My go to is the El Mobley with a small queso and let me tell you, you've heard of the freshman 15...4 years full of these suckers and I was in for the four-year 40. I make a point to visit every time I'm in town, even if I only have time for 1 margarita (but let's be real...you can't only have 1). You feel like family here, and in my humble opinion, that tops every other aspect of a dining experience.
