Favorite Mexican restaurant in Brooklyn! I really miss sitting at the bar for happy hour but sitting out side and getting take away is just as great and they are doing a really good job at packaging everything up so the food keeps its integrity. Margaritas are so good and fresh. Their guacamole and shrimp tacos are unreal, but I think my favorite and slightly downplayed thing to order here is the shishito peppers... they're perfect. I came here on a Thursday night with a foodie friend and to be honest, I didn't have any expectations not having had the best experiences with Mexican in NYC. I was pleasantly surprised. We were seated promptly and told that many of the dishes were made for sharing - and that we did! We ordered the Guacamole, Bistec con Queso Tacos and the Pollo Adobada. There was plenty of food to go around and we couldn't finish even though everything was phenomenal. Guacamole - Hands down the best guac I've had in recent memory. The chile serrano made is what did the trick. We proceeded to top all other dishes with guac - even took it home! Bistec con Queso - I have a dairy allergy (amongst other allergies) but the server was really nice about accommodating my order without the queso. That said, probably one of the more forgettable dishes even though it was good. Pollo Adobada - A huge half portion of roasted chicken in what seemed like a wine based sauce. It was very tender and perfectly cooked. Paired with potatoes and pico de gallo. Casa Publicais in a similar category of restaurants as Cosme in Flatiron, but Casa Publica is by far the winner in this race. In both menu options and service, I'd choose Casa Publica any day. I went with my girlfriend (and 22 month old daughter) for Casa Publica's opening night. A more than welcome (and child-friendly) addition to the neighborhood. An airy space with an inviting and communal feel. Highlights for us were the Guac (top notch, among the best either of us have had anywhere in the city), Queso with mushrooms and soft tortillas (excellent) and Carnitas tacos (we plan to sample some others in the future). The drinks also contained a generous, but not excessive, amount of alcohol. We also had a mole bowl with chips and a sunny side up egg - tough for me to grade it, as i don't love mole. Nice presentation, though. We will most definitely be back to this restaurant. Came here for brunch with a friend as we had a noon reservation on a Sunday. We were promptly seated at our reservation time. We both had bloody Mary's, which were really tasty. I ordered the huevos rancheros while she got baked eggs. We both LOVED our dishes. They have a nice variety of brunch options that have a Mexican influence, but with generic brunch options as well. I was very excited to see this space turned into such a lovely restaurant. This is exactly what this neighborhood needed. Everything we had was really good, but the highlights were the guacamole, which was excellent, and the carnitas tacos. I also really enjoyed the ceviche which was delicious with just the right amount of heat. The chips were home made and excellent (though the serving size is a little small for the amount of guacamole you get). The cocktails I had were also great. Great service, food and drinks! Love their frozen margaritas and top it with a float (adding an extra shot or more flavor). The drinks are strong and sooooo good! This is an awesome addition to the neighborhood! Food is inspired by Mexico City and there's a great range of affordable simple dishes to more complex delicious entrees like the Jaiba (soft shell crab). Really recommend the queso fundido and my lady loved her steak tacos. So much so that I didn't get to sneak a bite. Qué lástima! Service was fast and attentive and they are clearly trying to make a good first impression to the discerning Brooklyn crowds. We had been there roughly 40 minutes and the waitress rudely asked us to give up our table for people who would order "real food not just a snack". We've been to Casa Publica 6 or 7 times and love every thing about it. Yesterday we sat at the bar before dinner and ordered a couple margaritas. As we signed the bill, tipping the bartender $8 on a $30 tab for the two drinks, the bar tender toss out the contents of my wife's half consumed cocktail. When we were seated for dinner we told the host what happened and she returned not with a new cocktail, but with a half one... Now on the one hand fair is fair. There was half left and my wife got half back. However, having worked as a cocktail waitress previously my wife was shocked - she said you only do this to someone when you're trying to spite them. We though the interaction showed a lack of proper service culture...and is something minor Casa might want to correct. For that reason this is a 3 star instead of 4. read more

Great Mexican spot in Williamsburg! Came here last night for dinner with a few friends and was definitely satisfied. We started with the guac and chips which were perfectly seasoned and flavorful. I got the shrimp tacos which were amazing, I just wish I got three instead of 2. I'd also recommend a side of rice and beans to make it a bit more filling. The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is the margaritas were good but not the strongest, the mixer was a bit too overpowering and there could've been a little bit more tequila. We went to Casa Publica for happy hour prior to going to the Music Hall of Williamsburg for a show. We sat at the bar. The service was great and the bartender was very attentive. However, the food was not very good. We had the steak tacos on the recommendation of the other reviewers, and despite their rave reviews I found the steak to be fatty and somewhat bland. The toppings were good but didn't make up for the poor quality of the steak. We also had the corn appetizer, which was tasty. The platanos appetizer, which I was looking forward to, was a letdown. It was totally bland and tasteless. The best part of the meal was the margarita which was very good and strong. Our bill at the end did not seem to reflect the fact that we stuck to the happy hour menu. This place is overhyped and overpriced. read more

Very disappointed with our service when our group of 6 ordered a pitcher of margaritas at the bar. We asked if we could upgrade from the margarita pitcher from house tequila to casamigos which we were told was no problem and expecting a small charge to upgrade (each pitcher pours 6 glasses). We had 2 pitchers and received our bill to find we were charged per glass (not per pitcher) to a total of 91 dollars a pitcher plus a 13 dollar upcharge per pitcher to make margaritas. Ultimately we paid 104 dollars for a pitcher of margaritas with casamigos when the house pitcher is marketed as 58. We felt very ripped off as the pitcher didn't even pour 6 glasses and were charged for 13 drinks when we only had 2 pitchers which made 12 drinks (barely). Also the bartender upon questioning of the bill made us feel as though we are unable to pay. I'm fine with paying with what I asked for but only when it's presented honestly and it's a bit ridiculous at a Mexican restaurant there's an upcharge to make margaritas. So disappointed. In my humble opinion, very below average. I have a theory that in NY, the best Mexican food is at those weird rinky-dink, suspicious-looking food trucks. This spring I travelled to Mexico City, where I ate some of the most amazing food, and I was hoping that Casa Publica would transport me back there. Sadly, it did not even come close. I don't get out much...and I write about one Yelp review a year, so take that for what its worth. This review is for the food at Casa Publica. The service was fine - I could quibble with receiving a margarita when I asked for seltzer, or for being charged for the additional tortillas we requested...but I won't because it was my 19th wedding anniversary and I wanted a good meal and what I got was a fantastic meal, so I forgive a lot of the small things that some might subtract a star for and chalk it up to a busy Saturday night. Betabeles - 6 stars if I could. We ordered the queso, based on other reviewers recommendations, and were not at all disappointed - the mushrooms and sesame seed combined with the gooey cheese was a mini mouthgasm, but the Betabeles...oh my...that was an eye-rolling transcendental mouthgasm with every bite! I've watched cooking shows for years and watched some of the best chefs in the world pause after taking a bite of something and get a look on their face that I couldn't quite identify, and once finished chewing they seemingly struggle to describe what had just happened in their mouth - now I get it. Every one of the flavors stands out, and yet they somehow combine and compliment each other in a way that can only be experienced by...experiencing it. I like to cook, and I'm pretty sure I could never quite come close to recreating this dish - but I want to try. The nutty base that brings it all together is sikil pak, a pumpkin seed paste that I was compelled to research - maybe that's the magic ingredient - but every other part of it was divine! Like the Bentley version of what a 7-layer party dip would taste like. The other highlight was the roasted brussel sprouts - a relatively simple dish but perfected with a combination of chili oil and sesame seeds - crackalicious! The pork confit was terrific, but to be perfectly honest, the 3 appetizers and sides offered so much flavor that the entree felt almost perfunctory - delicious, but not as standout as the others. My wife ordered the veggie enchiladas topped with a rich mole sauce, which again, on its own may have been great, but after the 1st act, it didn't really offer much in the way of Wow! Can't wait for an excuse to go back for the Betabele and the sprouts and to explore more of the menu for any other hidden gems. read more
