One of my go-to places for Mexican food in Bakersfield. The guacamole and salsa are great and there albondigas soup is the best I've found in town. They have a funny hat for birthday songs and they used to give you a Polaroid of you in the hat on your B-day. Not sure if they still do that. I've been eating here since I was a kid. It is the best Mexican food restaurant in town. I've eaten at all the new Mexican restaurants that's pop up in town and I always end up coming back here. If someone in my family is having a bad day, I will come by here and buy a pint of this restaurant's salsa and gift it to a family member. It's so good and doesn't last long in my parents' home. My husband and I love going because of his family tradition. I like it but there are some staff members that are rude. I only like a few select items on the menu and I recommend not to go during a rush hour or you will wait a while. Seats are lumpy and uncomfortable. Chips and salsa suck. I can make better salsa than them. I asked for chicken tortilla soup but the waitress said they don't serve that. My family has been coming here for 20+ years when they had margaritas for a dollar. Now they are $4.25 on Saturdays and $5.25 normally. The best margaritas in town by far!! And, they are very strong. I would pay $7 to $8 anywhere else and not nearly as good. I absolutely love the shredded beef taco and dinner salad. The salad is the freshest I have ever had. Cold and crisp. If you are in Bakersfield, looking for Mexican food, this is the best there is! Our waiter Luis has been there as long as we have and you could not ask for a better, more attentive, friendly waiter. They get most of their stars for service. Our waiter was friendly and efficient. The salsa was ok, kind of like taco sauce more than salsa. My food was just ok. The margaritas were gross. My bf says they grew on him, but I think that was the ridiculous amount of alcohol in the Margarita talking, not him. Normally high alcohol content adds a star in my book, but these tasted so weird and gross. My bf ordered a sangria next and that's the way to go here, it was a pretty darn good sangria. Really like this local family owned business. Their food is consistently good and flavorful unlike some Mexican restaurants. Also lunch service is quick and most of the waitresses can remember your orders if you are a regular. I like that the owners are present and mingle with the guests. THIS WAS NASTY!!! Let me start. we drive from the south west to eat their menudo probably 3-4 a month. today the wife wanted some so whole family took a 30 min drive to go eat. Sat down ordered food I had a large menudo and the wife had a med kids had different stuff. I was maybe about half way through my bowl when I noticed a black hair I took it out, started to look closer in bowl and started to find more hair. Told my wife she looked in her bowl she started to find hair in it to. It looked like the cook had just got a hair cut and dusted his hair in the pot. We called waitress over showed her. she was very apologetic. she brings us the bill and says she's sorry and she didn't charge us for bowls of menudo. Not once the manager came over to say anything. got up to pay my bill $51 dollar this is the part that made me more mad manager tried to tell us it was hair from the tripe that it was a bad batch and that they had it before. I never seen short black hair on tripe. I really like this place but I will never eat here again. YES IT WAS NASTY!!! read more

It's a family run business and the staff is very nice and attentive. Nice and clean establishment. The decor is a bit dated, but has a certain charm. The atmosphere is pleasant. The food is good, although I prefer La Cabana and Si Senior Grill. The margaritas are very very strong! Tastes very cheap and will give you one heck of a hangover! Came here last night around 5:30p or so. I had purchased a Bakersfield Daily Deal that got me a $20 certificate for just $10, couldn't pass it up. I know I have been here at least once before, but couldn't recall any details. The husband and I generally go to El Sombrero. My husband really doesn't like Mexican food in general, but will stomach some fajitas for me. We were seating pretty quickly by very friendly staff. If I could give a rating for different aspects of this place I would. The service would get 5 stars. They are really friendly, polite and well dressed. The food is another issue. I had high expectations after reading the reviews, but was let down. Maybe other reviewers have never had good Mexican food. I was starving last night after a long day at work. The husband and I went through two bowls and chips and salsa before the food got there. At first I was digging the salsa, but it started to get really vinegary. Not sure if it was a different batch, or if I was too hungry to notice it at first. In regards to the food I initially had no real complaints. I had a tostada with shredded beef. It was basic and good. I would have preferred chicken, but the chicken isn't shredded.I can't explain it, but shredded chicken is far superior to cubed chicken. The husband had the beef fajitas with just rice. His rice wasn't as good as El Sombrero, but it was edible. Besides the rice and salsa we left feeling okay. Before I forget, the ambiance is a little weird. There is a water feature up front that fills the restaurant with the sounds of running water. I wasn't a big fan. Anyways it wasn't until after we left that we regretting our dining choice. There is no nice way to put it, my husband got the shits. Not sure how since he had very little salsa and just had beef, rice and two little tortillas. My stomach was upset, but not nearly as bad as him. I used to go here frequently in the old days and I loved the food and margarita's. I haven't been in years, but decided to go with my family on Saturday night. The service was fantastic. The margaritas were not what I remembered, but they were ok. We ordered guacamole dip, the large and it looked like pureed peas that was thinned to the point of no taste whatsoever! We were taking the guacamole and adding salsa and salt to it so it would have a little flavor. It was horrible. We waited a very long time for the food, the waitress was very attentive and nice. When the food finally came, the refried beans looked almost translucent, like they were thinned and watered beyond being served to a human! Completely tasteless and gross. The rice was equally disgusting, looked like a bad boxed job with no flavor. It was horrible and my husband's meat was burnt, truly too overdone to be served and was like jerky. I told the waitress that we were very dissatisfied and I asked her, "do you have a Mexican grandma?" and she said, "yes" and I said, "would she serve this?" and the waitress shook her head no and apologized profusely. I did not blame her, she gave great service, but whoever is in the kitchen now as opposed to years ago, needs to GO and they need to get the old chef back! We will not go back! read more

We've been coming to this restaurant since 2007 when I married my husband. We visit about twice a month. We were there on a Saturday, my children ordered kids meals. Walter brought us 2 kids meals instead of 3, and brought us an extra chimichanga (he accidentally ordered my husband's plate twice) Anyway, the waiter quickly put a cheeseburger kids meal for my daughter. After about 4 bites, my daughter complained her burger tasted funny. When we looked at her burger, it was completely RED in the middle!! We returned it to the kitchen and they made her another burger however by the time we got the burger she would no longer eat it. There was a lady sitting there who is always there. I believe the owner. Anyway, she commented to the waiter but no one attempted to make the issue better. No apologies, no discount, nothing! The second burger was untouched. I think it would've only been fair to not charge us for that burger, especially because we are long time customers. We won't ever go back there. read more

Best Mexican rice I've had other than mine. Salsa was very thin, typical of old authentic Mexican restaurants. Beans were good because they're made with vegetable oil instead of lard. The vegetable fajitas were served on the plate with rice and beans instead of coming out sizzling with a heat candle below as in most Mexican restaurants. With so many different styles of Mexican food to choose from in Bakersfield, this is hands down my favorite. I am a big fan of their seasoned ground beef Tacos and Enchiladas, yum. But, you must try their Chile Verde, so tender it just falls apart on your plate and melts in your mouth. Recently, I hosted a surprise dinner party for my mothers 70th birthday. I reserved the private room which seats 30. I decided to go buffet style just to make it simple, and honestly, I wasn't expecting the food to be as good as it was, it was really good. We had Ground Beef Enchiladas, Chile Verde, Chicken Enchiladas Suizas, Rice and Beans, all at a VERY AFFORDABLE cost! We were given access to the back room prior to the party and allowed to decorate and set up, they even safely stored our cakes for us. This is my FAVORITE Mexican place in Bakersfield! The guacamole is out of this world - depending on the time of year it can be mild and creamy or spicy and not so creamy - depends on the chiles they get that day - but always EXCELLENT! All their food is great but try the Caldo de Rez soup - and instead of having the beef in it, ask for the shredded chicken - yummy! Their red sauce (for enchiladas, etc) is perfectly spiced - and no lard! Always generous portions served. And speaking of service - extremely friendly, attentive, and always happy to make any accomodation you need/want. Gets very busy at lunch time, you may want to make reservations. I am 24 and have been going to Casa Munoz since I was very little. Something as simple as an enchilada, taco, rice and beans taste's like heaven in your mouth. Ask for extra cheese, as its mouth watering! I have lived all over the country and have yet to have anything as good as this, and would crave it more than I can express when not in the area. A horrible experience. There were 3 in our party on a Tuesday at dinner time. After waiting for 10 minutes at our table with no server, an off duty waitress came to us and informed us that our waiter was in the banquet room and would be right with us. We were there to eat dinner and rest after a day of making funeral arrangements for an unexpected family death the day before. The waitress took our drink order, and when one of us asked for lime with the beer, he was told he was being difficult. I thought she was joking, but She did not bring him the lime. The other two of us ordered Cadillac margaritas, which we did the shot and had to send back the margaritas because they were so syrupy and weird we couldn't even attempt to drink them. The waiter never made it out of the banquet room. After a long wait We flagged down a manager looking type who barely acknowledged my request to order and sent over this off duty waitress again. She reminded us she was trying to leave 2 times while taking our order (we all got steak fajitas, the deceased favorite) and she also told us how we were "making her life miserable" when one of us said to hold the pico de gallo. I was floored at her rudeness, but did not react. We waited an appropriate time for our food I guess. And despite how "difficult" our order was, she managed to get it correct somehow, but we had no forks or napkins when our food arrived. I suppose miss personality wanted to just throw it at our faces. At any rate, she rushed us again and again and dropped the bill immediately, and informed us at that time that the manager who barely spoke with us had comped the meals but not the alcohol. Ok, we didn't even ask for that, but it was totally appropriate. The waitress then said that he only does that when people complain and we "had better not complained about her". Our group just stared at her - again not taking her bait for confrontation. She then asked if she could take payment immediately, still trying to get out the door for her grandmas birthday or something (it's now almost 8pm). We finish and head toward the door to leave, where miss personality - who was so rushed all evening and reminding us constantly - was chatting and laughing with the host, just hangin out. We did not leave a tip. My best friend (who's father it was that passed the previous day) left her an explanation instead. I'm sure it fell on deaf ears. We are a large family of locals. I can ensure you no body we know will be going back to this place. Ever. PS, we all had diarrhea the next day. Imagine that. That dinner was the only meal we had in common. Unbelievable!!! They charge an extra $5 per meal for take out and twice now I've gotten an incorrect order. This time I went back 5 minutes later and they replaced the entre, but it wasn't even hot when I got there to pick it up. Just a curt apology and that was it.
