Probably one of the worst places I've ever ate at. The atmosphere was great but that's about it. Service was terrible. We bought the salsa and "chips" appetizer. They brought salsa and 5 corn tortillas. The water tasted funny, the soda was flat, the alcohol was okay. We never got refills. The food was bland, and dry. I ordered a shrimp dish that was covered in sauce. However, I had to peel my own shrimp....that was covered in sauce. So it became messy. The fajitas were extremely bland. Server never checked on us. I think he knew we weren't happy so he tried to avoid us. We spoke to the staff how we weren't happy and they just shrugged their shoulders. Our bill was $92. I don't mind paying that much when food and service is excellent however this was not the case. Absolutely awful all around. Do not go here. Place gets busy, please plan ahead make reservations, we were a party of 9 we sat outside we knew it was going to be cold we expected that and we also knew food would be delayed a bit.... We asked to have a unused heater to be brought to our table and our waiter stated it was out of gas....we ordered apps drinks and some shots.... We were met with a nice waiter who immediately got our alcoholic drinks and one of our apps and we never saw him again for over 20 mins... we never got our soup, we didn't get our waters and soft drinks it's like he vanished.... I ended up getting my own water by going to the bar. Our food comes out after some lengthy time of waiting. Our server didn't bring it out someone else did which we got our waters from, we advised them I didn't get my soup. We noticed our meats weren't cooked to our desired temps, my shrimp was tough but the sauce tasted good, this tells me our food was done for awhile but never picked up and caused it to get cold and tough.. We ask for tortillas, which we waited for 15-20 mins and brought to us after the food was completed cause we got tired of waiting and just ate.... We were informed the soup would not be charged which is a no brainer since I never got it... this is when things turned for the worse....our waiter came back to just drop the bill mind you we barely or never saw him. We notice the table next to us got the heater we requested the hour before and was in working conditions when our server told us it wasn't.... I get the bill and notice a tip was automatically included... due to the lack of service, subpar food and not favorable atmosphere I wanted the tip to be taken out of the bill... I asked for this to be taken out.. I was met with "oh we are not charging for the soup, sorry!" I knew it was going to be an argument so I asked to speak to the manager.... It took some time, I was told the manager was not there but finally the bar manager who isn't in charge of the food service kindly, professionally and apologetically introduced himself and ask what the problem was.. As I was explaining our server kept interrupting our conversation and trying to defend himself while the manager told him politely to please leave and let him take care of it.. I informed why I felt there should be no tip and stated I didn't want a discount or free food, we would pay for what we consumed but felt the tip should be charged since honestly it was terrible service.... The manager came back and very sincere and apologetic stated he was so sorry and took the tip off and gave a discount even though numerous times I told him it was not my intention... If you are going to have a policy where you have to be there when you call your name, make sure you have hostesses that can speak up especially on crowded nights. My friends and I attempted to eat here on a busy Saturday night as a group of 4 and were told it would be 30-45 minutes and we put our name down. We went into the bar and got some drinks and sat in the couch area right by the hostess stand so we would be in distance to hear our name. About 30 minutes go by and we start seeing groups that came after us start getting call but we have been there the whole time so we are confused. My friend goes to the stand and asks and apparently one hostess said they "skipped us" and are 10-13 names after us now, she tries to accommodate and say we will be next but then the other hostess next to her rudely said to my friend "oh I definitely called you and you just weren't here". Looking for a Spanish Cuisine and was excited because they had a beautiful outdoor dining area. I ordered the Combo Fajitas and would had better at Chili's or Fridays. The extra plate had dried out corn wraps but the flour ones were fresh. It waiter was one of the worst I ever had. No check up and I needed salsa. No refill of my Drink, no napkins. Super cute restaurant with great food. I'm not sure what people did in the days before there was Yelp. We kind of tested this theory by walking up and down the streets next to St. George to decide where to eat dinner. I'm not completely insane so every time we found a spot with a decent menu I did look it up on Yelp to make sure it was over 4 stars. Some of these places were absolutely slammed and we decided we didn't want to wait. (Btw, most places by St. George Street have at least 4 stars so you have a good chance of eating someplace awesome even if you don't use Yelp.) Since it had been raining all day but was clear by dinner, everyone was choosing to dine outside on the balcony. I hate mosquitoes so out of fear I asked to sit inside. We were the only ones who did that so we were in an empty room by ourselves! I got the octopus tacos and made it a fiesta bowl. My husband got carne asada tacos. There was so much octopus in the bowl! It was huge - I could have eaten it for two meals. The octopus was really tender too. In my opinion, there were too many beans so I ended up eating around them. The carne asada in the tacos were very tender as well. My husband got a side of beans and rice and discovered there were other types of beans than just black beans. My only complaint was we were seated at a high top table and for me personally with 2 dogs that's hard to eat and hold onto leashes while they lay at my feet. I decided to have the group come here for lunch, which ended up an earlyish dinner based on a recommendation from one of the servers we met at Coco (a breakfast spot around the corner). I had this place on the list but was thinking of somewhere else for lunch; I'm glad we ended up coming here though because it was very good. Their vegan entree, the Na-Kaab Tempeh was very good. My husband's niece also ordered the vegetarian burrito which also looked good; it could be made vegan by omitting the cheese. The guys both ordered quesadillas for dinner and the octopus Cocteles for a started which had very tender pieces of octopus. This was an accidental find. My friends stopped at Cousteau's Waffle and Milkshake bar (across the street). I wasn't really in the mood for it and the shop was small and hot inside so I stood outside. Looked across the street and saw the sign for Casa Maya. Several of us decided to head there for a drink while waiting for the others. We walked up to the bar and was greeted by a super friendly bartender. Drinks all around, all served with a smile. When the birthday boy and the others made their way over, we asked for their best tequila to "cheers" our friend. The bartender suggested Esperanto Blanco. It was $13/shot but the glass looked more like we were getting a double. The presentation was cute. Instead of a charcuterie board it was a "SHOTcuterie" board (as my friend called it). Lol Just before we were to take the shot, the bartender said it was meant for sipping! What? That could have burned, so thank you bartender. It was smooth and tasted fruity. It's a new fave tequila. We stopped in at Casa Maya for breakfast one morning during our weekend in St. Augustine, and it was a fine breakfast - but one I probably wouldn't repeat (with so many great restaurants in this charming city)! I'm a pretty picky breakfast eater - because I'm definitely not into sweets (French toast, crepes, waffles, pancakes - none of these tempt me at all). My go-tos are Mexican food and Jewish food (probably typical of a Jewish girl from Texas), so I was excited to see this Mexican breakfast menu at Casa Maya: huevos a la mexicana, heuvos con chorizo, chilaquiles (MY FAVORITE), huevos rancheros, and huevos poblanos (mole sauce). The service was good - we were there before it got busy, and we were alone on the second floor until a couple went out to eat on the second floor balcony. But the food was mixed. I was impressed by the chilaquiles (rojo) - served with raw onion and cilantro - I felt like I was at home in Texas. (With three eggs, all of the breakfast dishes are hearty portions.) My husband got the huevos poblanos with a chocolate mole sauce. He was able to eat it, but I was shocked when I tried it. Mole is not an easy thing to make. It's complicated and not all should attempt. And Casa Maya really isn't up to the challenge. Yes, mole negro has chocolate in it. It also usually has some sweet-er spices (cloves, anise, cinnamon). But it's typically balanced with a whole lot of CHARRED CHILES, onion, garlic, peppercorns, etc. This mole was not balanced at all. I took one bit and found it way, way, way too sweet (all chocolate and cinnamon). No heat at all. If I'm ever in St. Augustine again, I wouldn't say that I'd never eat at Casa Maya again. But I certainly would never, ever order the mole eggs. read more

Unfortunately, our server who started off strong started to grow impatient and stressed as the night went on. When the food came, the table became silent, and we dove right in. White Wine Mussels - a must order! The mussels themselves were plump and tender. The broth light, full of garlic aroma and white wine reduction. Bread points dipped in the sauce made for the perfect bite. On this night, Matt was 2/2 with his orders! The rest of the table was rather disappointed with their meals, especially considering the price point of their dishes. $16 for a veggie burrito, $26 for hanger steak, etc. Their bills racked up quickly. As a diner, you expect more when you (obviously) pay more. I want to reiterate that my dishes and drinks were fantastic, and I recommend anyone who visits Casa Maya to order them. Also, the outdoor patio is gorgeous and fun place to live it up with your friends. The rooms inside are quaint as it is the inside of a house. The upstairs front porch offers a great perspective of Hypolita Street. The courtyard looks fantastic. Two full bars and tons of greenery flecked with flickering lights, make dining al fresco super fun. There's a stage with live music too. Our server could not have been better. This restaurant was easily the one place my family and I will NEVER go again. We went to St. Augustine on a Saturday. Every restaurant in the Georgetown/downtown area had at least a 1 hour wait, and somehow this restaurant did not have a wait. That raised a little suspicion, but we decided to eat there because we figured it's just somewhere to eat. We got there, and immediately thought "Hey, this is a nice restaurant. It looks like it'll be a good time"...that thought immediately left our minds when we saw the dinner menu prices. We don't care about paying higher prices for food, if it's actually worth it, but this definitely wasn't worth it. The cheapest entree on the menu was a quesadilla, but yet that was still ridiculously priced. It did not come with a side whatsoever. I got a simple quesadilla with steak, and it was $19...i've been to far better restaurants, with far better portions, for more than a few dollars less than that. We were all pretty upset about the prices, but went ahead and ordered because we didn't want to just leave and go look for food anywhere else because it was all just too much of a wait. It took them about 25-30 minutes for them to bring the food out, but nothing we ordered was even customized, or hard to make for it take that long. Quick note: We wanted to try the Queso Dip, and they were out...how is a Mexican restaurant out of Queso Dip??? anyway.... Towards the end of dining, when we already got the check, a family was sat next to us. They ordered drinks, and we over heard them literally talking about the prices being so high and debating if they should leave. We advised them that if they're questioning eating here based on prices and being worth it, then they should definitely leave. Moments later, the family asked for the check for the drinks they ordered, and left. I'm saying this to show that we weren't the only ones shocked by the prices. With the prices that were at this restaurant, you'd think it's closer to a more fine dining experience, and that definitely isn't the case. The service itself was just average. Nothing stood out. Casa Maya came to the rescue when we wanted a late dinner downtown. It wasn't even really all that late, but many restaurants here close at 9. There was live music outside of the upscale Mexican seafood-focused spot but we elected to sit inside since it was quieter and calmer. We started off with an order of ceviche ($14.95) which we all agreed was unexciting. However I was a fan of the baked corn tortillas that accompanied the ceviche. You get your choice of shrimp or octopus but if you can't decide, you can have both for a buck extra. I decided on the pakal shrimp ($22.95). On the menu, it's described as "Shrimp marinated in citrus, guajillo pepper sauce then broiled to perfection. Served over rice with corn relish and balsamic glaze." I asked about the hotness level of the guajillo pepper sauce and was informed that it wasn't spicy. It sure wasn't, and it really complimented the plump shrimp well. The amount of shrimp was reasonable, and they were all cooked nicely. Good glaze too, could maybe use a few spoons more but no real issues. Heartily recommended. My friend wasn't particularly wowed by her salad. Another found his meal size a little small. Service was totally fine, no issues there. Maybe Casa Maya's around a 3.5 but I'm going to round up to 4 stars since the pakal shrimp won me over. Get that. read more
