So I'll start this by saying I'm sadly disappointed by Casa Maya. Reading the numerous reviews, and hearing a lot about this place, I went in with high expectations. However, for the price point of this restaurant, it did not live up to expectations. I ordered the veggie burrito with mahi. For $25, it was OK, definitely not the best burrito I've had, nor the cheapest. The rest of the table ordered the fresh catch of the day, the red snapper, and fajitas, which they also weren't impressed with. Service was fine, even though our waiter did seem a little hassled. We didn't have to wait long for a table, and drinks were pleasant entertainment until the food arrived. If I'm willing to pay that much money, I'd expect my food to taste better. Casa Maya guacs my world! My fiance and I were in search of oysters and other tasty foods for dinner last night. Luckily, we stumbled upon this spot. Seeing oyster shooters on the menu, I was sold. Casa Maya has a very homey vibe. The downstairs has a dark, cozy bar. Upstairs, there's a wood-floor dining area and a balcony dining area overlooking historic downtown St. Augustine. We ordered oyster shooters and guacamole to start. The oyster shooters were perfect... like having a miniature spicy Bloody Mary with a couple of oysters at the bottom. And the guac was perfect. Very chunky and fresh with a beautiful lime garnish. For our meals, I ordered the shrimp and octopus ceviche, and my fiance had the ropas vieja. We cleaned our plates. The food was so delicious! Next time, I'd probably order the same thing (ceviche), although I might choose to have the ceviche with octopus only (no shrimp). The shrimp were tasty, but the octopus was amazing... tender and luscious, with a hint of smoke. Our server, Anthony, was great... friendly, funny and fast. Cozy place with a Mayan inspired menu. I had the steak fajitas while my wife had trigger fish cooked Mayan style. The fajitas were well seasoned, not blad or tough steak cuts. Plenty of onion but could use a bit more cilantro. The sauce on the trigger fish was fair, but not exciting. Next visit will be of something different. There is a live Spanish band playing, but we were inside upstairs and they had different pipped music that just clashed constantly Our waitress was as sweet and attentive as she could be. Allie was a good hire, Mayo. The second floor has a great view of the activity of the streetlife below. Desert was flan made in-house. Put that on your list and save room for it. I have been to Casa Maya multiple times. This place is always super duper busy. The ambience: somewhat well decorated. Indoors and outdoor seating areas. Love music. Balcony seating, noise is always loud. Very crowded Staff: friendly, attentive and professional, but sometimes they seemed overwhelmed. Especially when people are waiting and waiting Food: the shrimp ceviche is good. Mixed seafood dish is fine. My worst experience was ordering the mahi-mahi with mango sauce with side of potatoes. It was the most nauseating and disgusting dish I ever tried in awhile. It was for $32 I think. I just could not stomach the flavors or lack of flavor. The mango sauce tasted like someone's else puke. The fish was rancid. My husband thought I was being pick and he tried my dish, but he was disgusted by it as well. We made sure the waiter know about it. This experience was disappointing because we had to wait very long to be seated and paid for a pricy dish to eat something tasted like rotten food. My husband ordered the carne asada, which was not bad, but still pricy. I never went back after that time. I need to forget how bad the dish and lack of creativity before I can go back. Dining experience was excellent great service and friendly. The atmosphere is cute and kind of makes you feel like you're actually in Mexico if you have ever been you'll know what I mean. We got like and were able to sit on the top balcony overlooking the street so if you're into people watching this is another plus. We ordered chips and salsa and yes you had to PT for them everything is al carte, which is ok fresh guacamole which was delicious. For our main course we had the Paella which had wonderful flavor, the only problem with it was that is was very soupy. Paella should be served like a bed of rice in a bowl this was very soup like we got the bottom of the barrel which would explain the excess liquid. Other than that the flavor was delicious. I'm only giving one star because the waiter felt sorry for us after waiting at the table for 20 minutes to be served. All staff was not compliant with masks but there is a sign at the entrance that says Mask must be worn. After waiting a ridiculous amount of time to be served we attempted to get the waitress attention to ask for our server. She turned to look at us and walked away without acknowledging us. I guess it didn't matter much because she wasn't wearing a mask anyway. The food took a long time to come out and the servers were not wearing masks or had the masks under the chin. I had the steak fajita and was not impressed. Chili's fajitas are better. In my opinion, the food was overpriced for the quality. Upstairs there was only bathroom. So good, we came here twice in one day! We had one day to spend in historic St. Augustine so we made the most of it- dining, drinking and seeing the local sights. Before we embarked on our self guided tour of the fort, we decided we needed a drink so we stopped into Casa Maya's outdoor courtyard to have one at their outdoor bar. We ordered a shot of tequila, a beer and a cider and our bill came to about $12. Not bad! The outdoor area is super cute- colorful artwork and lights strung up made for an awesome setting. Later in the day we felt famished and were in need of some sustenance so we decided to head back over to Casa Maya to sample some food. We were seated on the 2nd floor balcony and had a great view of the street below. Our server was attentive and helpful and made great suggestions on what to order. We started our meal off with Alaskan Crab Legs. The crabs were fresh and oh-so sweet. Not fishy at all. They were made simply and came accompanied with melted butter. Sooooo yummy. We ordered the Seafood Paella for two as our entree. We were in the mood for seafood this evening and this sure fit what we were looking for! Clams, mussels, shrimp, scallops, chicken, steak, fish, chorizo AND crab legs over top of saffron rice. Omggg seafood heaven. I washed this all down with an excellent glass of the red sangria. Definitely a meal to remember and an amazing date night for sure. I will definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting St. Augustine. You should come here. You won't regret it!!!! read more

Yesterday I visited this establishment for lunch and had a great experience. The service was attentive, the location was perfect, and the food was very tasty. This is a very good Tex Mex location in the area and has a lot going for them. The building is huge where this location is located. We sat on the patio up stairs on the street front. It was really nice and a cool day so the patio was packed. The server was very attentive and made sure we had everything that we wanted. We ordered the Chips and Guacamole. The Guac was very flavorful. When the waiter took this order he asked if we also wanted salsa and I said sure, as I thought it may be complimentary, but it was almost $ for the cup of salsa, so be warned about that. They have you about 6 big chips that are easily breakable, but if you ask for more they will give you them without an up-charge. We both ordered tacos and shared them. I got the Mahi Tacos which came with lettus, an a chipotle mayo, and my friend got the Carne Asada which was beef with a slice of Avacado. Both tacos were very flavorful and tasted great. I enjoyed the White Sangaria and it was very good. The only issue I had was the price. For two drinks, Chips and Guac, and two orders of tacos it was well over $60. This was not worth the price we paid, but I guess when you are in a coastal city that is what you will get. Overall I do recommend this place. read more

So the ceviche was yummy. Not made with the little tiny shrimps either, these were actual prawns that had been cut into pieces which are nice size chunks. Nice flavor served with baked corn tortillas (crunchy) I've had better corn tortillas but oh well the shrimp more than make up for the tortillas which are quite grainy. Overall it was good, wasn't a 4 star only because of the limitations on food.. expected a little more and wasn't blown away by the seafood concept.. The salsa was supermarket bought and the chips where actually toastadas that were tasteless, cold, and supermarket bought. Had they heated them up a bit they may have been better. Walking around beautiful St. Augustine all morning and running off a subpar continental breakfast, my belly said get me a burrito or fajitas stat! Looked up joints and this one stood out easily. Unfortunately it wasn't anything to write home about and prices were way too high. The guacamole dip was the price of a normal Mexican restaurants meal by items. No free Chips and salsa...which I sound cheap but....this is a well observed standard at Mexican joints. I got the steak quesadilla which normally is hard to mess up. The meat was over cooked and super tough and springy. Kinda like burnt prime rib. I had to drowned in sour cream and my kids refried beans to get it down. Wife had tacos- said they were good but for 18$ they better have been. Waitress was hit or miss on attention but friendly. She did get the food to us quick. We didn't try any adult juice while there but it appears to be a good spot to try out on that front so this review is aside from their spirits. I actually had to ask for more lime because it didn't even taste like it had lime in it. Ceviche is raw fish that's supposed to be cooked in lime. How did the ceviche not taste like lime? The octopus was rubbery beyond what octopus normal texture is. This place is overpriced. Don't believe these yelp reviews. I mean, the place ran out of tacos by 4 pm. Ordered the fish of the day, and was delighted when an enormous piece of Grouper was presented, wrapped in parchment paper , and surrounded by perfectly cooked vegetables , plus rice. It was terrible and we didn't even get food. I'm in the food industry and it was a horrible experience. Took the server almost 10 minutes for someone to greet us and after being there for almost 30 minutes, we still never get all of our drinks. We had to ask for the check because we knew it wasn't getting any better. Maybe it was Keona's first day. I don't know, but well never be back again. We weren't the only ones having issues getting some attention. Thank god for the "busser" (don't know if that's his actual job title) he was so nice and helped as much as he could. We went to Casa Maya for Brunch, after a beautiful date night around Saint Augustine, it was such a fantastic experience! Our server was amazing and so friendly. He suggested I tried the breakfast chilaquiles, and I am so happy I did! Food was delicious! My husband also enjoyed his dish. The mimosa were flowing and the beautiful and happy atmosphere gave our romantic Sunday a great start. We sat under a tree, across from the bar, and the bartender lady was so friendly, we were having randomly funny conversations with her, keeping the atmosphere so vivid and fun. I can't believe I'm dropping our favorite lunch spot to a 4 but after last week's experience I have no other option. Now I'll start by saying that we were treating my inlaws to a day in st. augustine the way we enjoy it and it was a special day to celebrate their bdays completely our treat. So to bring them to Casa Maya was a must for lunch. We arrived around 12:30 and there were only two other diners seated outside and 4 at the outdoor bar. Our server was excellent...hands down he saved this experience for us. 3 of us ordered the top shelf margarita and one ordered a tom collins. Then we decided on our tacos...get the shrimp taco even if you get a mix of tacos this one is still the best in my opinion. I also ordered one cochinita and it was just ok...not as flavorful as the shrimp. We also ordered guacamole and salsa and both were fresh and tasty. So why 4 stars? We did not receive our margaritas (ordered first) until our meal came out...15-20 minutes after we arrived. Our server filled our water 3 times before the bartender could make 3 margaritas with only 6 other people in the entire place. It was obvious that making drinks wasn't as important as whatever else he was doing. The frustration showed on our server's face each time he came back to apologize. When you are spending over $130 for lunch you expect great service (which we did get from our server...but not from the bar). read more
