We wanted to come here for food, but don't make it so we will have to come back so we dropped in for drinks. We sat at the bar and ordered a mule and a jalapeño margarita. I admired the many plants around the room; some were real and some fake, but good fake ones. The tiles on the floor were gorgeous. We noticed people going outside and heard the hostess offer the outside patio, as the inside one was full. I hopped off my chair and went to check the outside patio out. It is such a cute area. We paid up and moved to the outside patio as the weather was perfect and were in Buffalo so we could be outside in the summer time. Delicious tacos by a talented chef!! The best taco was an off-menu vegan delight prepared by the chef. I ordered the pickled roasted cauliflower with an eggplant puree on a fresh tortilla along with the two vegetarian tacos on the menu, minus cheese. Minus cheese comes with an automatic avocado sauce upgrade which was much appreciated! I love when Mexican places offer avocado or guacamole as a swap for dairy at no additional charge. After speaking to the chef about vegan options the server came back at let us know about a braised cabbage shareable plate with candied pepitas and a beautiful pureed sauce. We ordered it and it was sensational. The chips are awesome and two of the three salsas were great. The third was more like a mole sauce. We started the evening with $5 margaritas for happy hour. All in all, it was a great experience and I will definitely return. Everyone in the group had a fun and delicious time. Talented chef turning out great dishes. Highly recommend! I enjoyed the setting, and my food was pretty good, but not the best Mexican food I've ever had. Appetizers - queso fundido and guacamole Entree - tacos (3): chicken, barbacoa, and fish The appetizers were delicious and so was my order, but that wasn't the case for my whole party. One diner ordered the pescado and it was quite underwhelming. This could've been a one time mistake, but the meal was served pretty cold, overly salted, and lacking flavor. Definitely going to go back here, but with a menu that features modern and unique Mexican dishes it may be smart to stick to the basics. read more

Anyone who knows me, knows I am a huge fan of tacos. Decided to check this place out tonight. I'm a fan. I like the overall vibe - this two story building has a full bar on the first floor and the dining seating on the second floor along with another bar. In the summer the front is open allowing for fresh air and a bright ambiance. There is also a small section of outdoor seating on the first floor. There is not a parking lot, off street parking only. I opted to sit at the bar with a couple coworkers and shared guacamole and chips and enjoyed two pork belly tacos (pictured) the guacamole was fresh and delicious and the chips appeared to be house made. The service was amazing because they give you a whole glass of sprite (8 ounces) tacos were excellent and exquisite it may not look like a lot of food but it will fill your tummy up, I'm already thinking about it right now, the employees are nice and kind and make sure to not to do anything wrong because they'll kick you out but they'll do it nicely. Heard this was the "Most Authentic Mexican" in Buffalo. Mexican people would be saddened to hear this. Where was the flavor? We've been to Mexico over a dozen times- cities, small towns in the mountains, everywhere. Limes should come with authentic tacos. Where were the raw onions and cilantro topping the tacos? Or even some sliced raw radish for crunch? Chilis seemed absent from the barbacoa, leaving it bland and salty. We had to douse the tacos in the homemade hot sauces to add something to it. Even the salsa trio had no spice or life to it. Really disappointed in the food. The cocktails on the other hand were well made, service staff was absolutely lovely and attentive. The one star is for the drinks, and the other was for the service. The food gets none. But one thing that was really annoying was the Bro-Fest at the bar. Backing into the servers trying to get out of the kitchen without apology. Consistent trips to the bathroom to "powder noses." (we saw people passing little bags since we were close to the bathrooms, and there was a line) Generally douchey behavior that was condoned. But that's not the restaurant's fault- but we felt bad for the servers struggling to get past. The clientele alone were enough to make us uncomfortable. The chilled crab torta was so light and refreshing! It look small when it came out but there was actually so much. The queso was okay, it had a good flavor but the cheese was way to thick and we could barely even scoop it up. We didn't get to eat here as we just stopped in for a drink while we waited for some friends but I'm giving it 5 stars for one reason: Matty the bartender. We were visiting Buffalo for the UWBHF games and Matty gave us a literal list of places we need to visit while we were there. I think we made it to about half the places he listed but they were all great. And his margaritas and palomas were't too shabby either. Let me first say that I was born and raised in SoCal so I am very picky with my Mexican food because I've eaten so much of it. I started with the Queso with chips as the appetizer, I chose the vegetarian version. The homemade tortilla chips were absolutely fantastic, but the queso fell flat. It's a skillet of cheese so I should have loved it, but flavor was missing, it was alright, probably would never order again. My entree was the Al Pastor Torta, once again the bread was absolutely fantastic. This place knows how to make their breads/tortillas, but the meat was just average. I love Al Pastor but this was missing the juiciness and just the flavor it should come with. But overall the Torta was fairly good, had good toppings on it that I enjoyed. I ordered a side of the rice and beans and this is where I was most disappointed. The beans had a nice flavor to them, unfortunately this flavor was hidden by the blandness of the rice. It seems like they are going for a stewed beans vibe, but if they were to do this, they need to let the beans soften a bit more and leave some of the bean water to the rice to make the rice absorb some of that flavor. I felt like I was eating nothing. Had to pick out the beans to get the flavor from them. Lastly, I had the churros. These were the star of the show. They were absolutely DELICIOUS. I was tempted to order a second helping. They are so nice and fluffy and just melt in your mouth. I may come back here for these alone. I wanted to love this place but in all honesty, overall everything was just average. They have fantastic breads/tortillas/ all those carb items they make themselves, but they need to improve everything else. I've been here perhaps twice before but this is my first review. I met some friends for a quick dinner last night and had to bring along my 5 year-old nephew, who insisted on a burger and fries. Heads up, the menu isn't kid-friendly if you have a picky eater on your hands. But major points to our server who suggested a plain cheese quesadilla as a kiddie alternative. I ordered a chicken torta, which I wolfed down before I remembered to take pictures. It was delicious and an easy 4 stars - that homemade bread was so good I wish they sold it retail. What could have taken it to the next level: - more meat/toppings in the sandwich. There was way more bread than filling. It left me wanting more. - seasoned chicken. The sandwich was really flavorful thanks to the sauce, but the few pieces of chicken that fell out were bland. Man, that sandwich would be mind blowing with a more in-depth flavor profile. What I appreciated most about this place was how polite and laid back the staff were with my nephew. He wasn't tearing up the place or being loud, but he definitely got restless and started wandering around upstairs (where we were seated). Don't shoot the messenger, but Casa Azul did not live up to the hype as the best Mexican in Buffalo. The mole on the Chicken Enchilada was overpowering. It's definitely an acquired taste. The El Pastor, Chicken, and Carne Asada tacos were just okay. However, the Masa Tortilla taco shells are very good and extremely fresh due to being hand pressed daily. The Queso Fundido was thick and hardened almost immediately upon reaching our table which was disappointing because it sounded delicious. I would recommend the Carne Asade Torta w/ avocado purée. I was excited to try this place but was bit disappointed because it was average, at best. We got the trio salsa appetizer which was fine and 2 watermelon mojitos which were a special. The mojitos did not taste good at all. Neither my friend or I liked them something about the taste was off and it was nothing like the flavor of a regular mojito. I got three tacos- fish, pork belly and beef brisket. The fish taco was my favorite. The pork belly had a weird texture and and beef one seemed dry. The upstairs open air dining area was nice. I went here in mid 2017, not long after it first opened I believe, I thought it was okay. This past week, I returned to grab a mid-week dinner with colleagues from work. Our waitress was very kind and was helpful with explaining the menu options. I enjoyed my drink (except I forget which one I ordered!) but it is a tad pricy at $11 per cocktail ($10 for some cocktails). The tacos are the perfect size and you could always order more - you are charged per taco and they are reasonably priced, in my opinion. The ambience and interior is fantastic. The staff are always friendly. My issue is with the food though. Everything I've had has been very bland and feels like it's missing something. The decor inside is funky colorful and unique. A few family sized tables. I do suggest getting reservations if you plan on coming in for late night dinner on the weekends. Its a little tight upstairs. If you like mezcal this is your place to go you'll see it all over the drink menu. Tacos range anywhere between 2.75 and $5. If there are at least 6 of you might i suggest the family style taco feast ($16 per person). Portions are ok. You definitely need at least 2 maybe 3 tacos but its worth it they are flavorful and every ingredient tastes so fresh. I usually come during happy hour-evening and I can say its a great place to grab a drink with your friends. Id go early if you want to snag a seat at the bar though. The queso and chips were the real show stopper. They serve tortillas or chips with the queso...obv had to go with the chips...perfectly salted and freshly made! The queso had the ultimate cheese pull!!! Def a unique queso and full of flavor! The tacos were tasty but nothing to really write home about. The shells I actually really liked...generally I dislike all corn shells but something about these were different. Casa Azul you were good to us. The menu is incredible, literally so hard to pick one so I got four items. Guacamole being the first, it was such a different take on the normal guacamole. It had pickled onions and a piece of sugar candy on top. Sounds strange but i kept eating it after a had a chip and it really brought out sweetness of the avocado. Also had three different tacos, home made shell and every taco was colorful and far from boring. I had braised pork belly, steak and fish. The fish was my favor it was so crispy. My experience here didn't start off so great because I injured my toe upon walking in. The door is at ground level so I wasn't expecting a rise in the floor made of metal. I almost fell when I tripped on it and gashed my toe. I was a little embarrassed about it and didn't want to make a fuss, so I didn't say anything right away. There's also a long trek upstairs that you must take to get to the second floor dining area. I'm disabled and had a rough time with it, but I liked the ambience of the bar and dining area. It's a neat place with character, albeit not a lot of decor. Our hostess seated us at a booth with no cushioning, just a hard wooden back against the wall, but it was better than a chair on my neck and shoulders. Our waitress was over shortly and as friendly as they come. She had a perky and sweet demeanor, so I liked her a lot. She knew what on the menu was gluten free and what wasn't, which was extremely helpful. My boyfriend and I stuck with water rather than order alcoholic drinks. We did get an appetizer, however, the guacamole with chips. This was good, I believe the chips were house made and the guacamole tasted interesting (in a good way). I ordered a chicken taco and a pork belly taco. When they arrived I wasn't disappointed because I knew they would be small. I was disappointed, however, when I tasted them. They weren't flavorful or even good. Everything was cooked fine, but it was all bland. I was pretty bummed about it, to be honest. I much prefer tacos loaded with different seasonings and sauces. The meat on these were pretty dry, too. As the waitress came over with our check, I decided to tell her about my mishap with the door earlier. She apologized, discerned I was bleeding, and went to go get me a bandage. I really only brought it up so someone could put a "watch your step" sign outside, but she came back and offered us a free dessert. Since I couldn't have their churros (again, gluten free), she brought us out ice cream. Mine was vanilla and cinnamon, but also ridiculously freezer burned. I thought it pretty unfortunate since it was practically inedible, but I said nothing about it because I felt bad complaining about a free item. I think Casa Azul can do much better with their food. Their staff is excellent and the service was pleasant, which is why I gave them 3 stars.
