We came here on a Friday night around 6PM because a band we love was supposed to play on the patio at 7. We asked to be seated on the patio, but were told that the 2 empty tables were saved. We were seated inside the almost empty restaurant, and chips and a small bowl of runny red liquid was placed on our table. Our waitress came to take our drink order, and when we asked what was on tap, we were told that the beer kegs had kicked, but we could order something in a bottle. I ordered a frozen lime margarita with a salted rim, and my husband ordered a seltzer. The margarita had very little salt, and the seltzer was served in a can with no glass offered. We ordered queso and it was relatively tasteless except for the sprinkling of cilantro on top. We were not offered any small appetizer plates to eat this on. Next came our tacos. I ordered two with beef, and one with chicken. The chicken was dry and chewy, and tasted like it had been reheated a few times. The beef was also dry and overcooked. This was a very disappointing evening, although we did stand outside on the sidewalk to listen to the great band that was playing on the patio. read more

Stopped in at Gramma Mora's on a Tuesday night around 7:30p. The bar was busy with beer league baseball players and there were about 5 occupied tables. We chose to sit outside where the tables and chairs looked like mismatched patio furniture. The service was kinda slow, but our server was very nice. We ordered the chimichanga dinner with steak and the carnitas dinner with chorizo; both with rice and beans. The chimichanga dinner was good, the steak was a little chewy, but it had good flavor. The carnitas dinner was just tacos in a lightly fried shell; the chorizo in it was good. The rice and beans were like warm and had little flavor. Overall Gramma Moras was alright. We haven't been here in quite some time but we were going to be in the area and wanted Mexican so we figured we would visit again. Gotta say that we were disappointed with our visit and probably won't be stopping back again. It was nothing like we remembered it being. Start with the service, which was sub-par. When we entered we weren't immediately greeted and when the hostess/waitress came up front she grabbed two menus, handed them to us and said, "sit wherever you like, I'll find you". No kidding, the place was empty! I wanted a Pina Colada however they were out of the mix so I had to settle for a strawberry daiquiri, which was nothing special. As for the food, I had the Azteca Burrito dinner and my wife went with the Chimichanga dinner. Mine was just ok, nothing special to write home about and not in the same ballpark as other authentic Mexican places in the area. My wife felt the same about hers, just okay and add to it the fact that they gave her refried beans instead of the Sopa that she asked for it just solidified our decision not to come back. She would have mentioned something to the waitress but she never came over to check on us, not once. Not a "how is everything?" Or a "can I get you anything?" Or even a "do you need another drink?" I think this place has run its course in the WNY Mexican restaurant arena and with so many other authentic Mexican places around, this is last on our list. read more

The Scarlet Vetter says.....it had been forever and a day since I had been here, but an unencumbered day in Buffalo left some time to squander, so I l convinced the hubs to take a jaunt to Hertel Ave to have lunch at this place as he had never been here. I used to go here back in the day when it was on Niagara Street. Then when it moved closer to where I lived in north Buffalo, I was overjoyed. Then I moved out to the Southern Tier in 2009, so it is likely that long since I was at Gramma Moras. The decor is still good with large booths. The facility is clean. We waited a few minutes for someone to come and seat us, but to be fair, we walked in right as they likely opened for the day. Chips and fresh salsa hit the table pretty fast along with some green chile sauce (when our server asked me if I like hot sauce she brought us a sample) Yum. The chips were hot, crunchy and perfectly seasoned. Then an amazing classic Margarita! I ordered the Pueblo's Platter (with chicken) and my hubby ordered the Mexican Stand Off (chorizo). The dishes come with a choice of 2 out of 3--rice, beans or sopa. We took the beans and the sopa (delicious). In all, the food was hot, really good and well spiced. We ate way too much and rolled out of the restaurant. I can say for sure we will be back! read more

Stopped for dinner on a Sunday evening, we did not have a reservation but were able to be seated after a short delay. We sat inside although the street side patio looked very inviting. The staff was friendly and courteous. After having some complimentary chips and salsa, We ordered a nacho appetizer which was fantastic. It was so large though we took much of our entrees home. The entrees consisted of a steak chimichanga and cheese enchiladas, they were fantastic as well. My wife had a glass of Pinot Grigio. The restaurant advertises that it's homemade family recipes but it does not deliver. Service was slow 2 out of our 3 visits. Most of the sauces are thick and taste like they're out of a can. Besides lacking any flavor or something unique we were served up microwaved sides and boring main dishes which both had use hesitant to eat. Plus the food was lukewarm at best. The queso had 0 flavor and tasted like flour gravy and the salsa was just there. The atmosphere was the same as it was 20+ years ago I was there last, old, and dingy. This place is sad. The family spot on Hertal Ave where everyone knows your name. The owner, Charlie and his wife, Liz, have been doing this over a lifetime. I've been a fan since I was a little girl and gramma was on Niagara St. Talk about a throwback huh? And you know what? I'm still a fan. Not sure where the complaints of the service are coming from because our server was very attentive and kept checking in on us. We had quite a few people checking in and especially during this challenging COVID-19 time, they're doing wonderfully as far as an establishment is concerned. I ordered the steak chimichanga dinner with sopa de fideo as the 2 sides (my absolute favorite ever, you must try if you're unfamiliar, and even if you are familiar-get it!) The steak chimichanga was delicious, very flavorful. The sopa was awesome per usual. I wished I had some to go as well. I also had a strawberry daiquiri which was so good, nice and strong too. Worth it to get it as well. They didn't have the pina colada which no biggie, the strawberry was just as good. Wasn't really a fan of the raspberry to be honest. Also had 2 orders of the kid's cheese quesadilla for the kids. They enjoyed it and ate all of it. My daughter really enjoyed the rice and beans. Overall, this place is a staple to the Buffalo area and most buffalo natives know about it. Worth a try, the decor is also appreciated. One soft with chicken one hard with chorizo and one hard with beef. I had a delicious lime margarita to quench my thirst. I always enjoy my visiting here. True story, this was my first visit. For years, even when I lived on Liden (street away from Hertel) I thought this might have been a BBQ joint because the Grandma Mora I knew sells baked beans (avail in Wegmans). Someone finally told me and I was like, oh ok. So I've known it was a Mexican restaurant nestled on Hertel but still never came here, after hearing about the reputation. That changed when my friend offered we meet up here for National Margarita Day (which I also didnt know was today). We arrived shortly before 6, a few seats were still open at the bar so we cuddled up to it. My friend comes here frequently and enjoys herself and the staff is familiar with her. We ordered our margaritas which they seem to have many flavors available, they opting for mango and I pomegranate. I assume our special Patron Tequila glasses, which we were allowed to take home was for the "national holiday". Wanting a bite to eat I ordered the 3 for $6 taco deal, selecting pollo, barbacoa and carnitas. Like other places they are soft shell corn tortillas, doubled up but served with just meat. In the main dining area there is a "toppings" bar which has your basic vegetable toppings, some salsa but no sour cream or cheese. Regarding the tacos, they were extremely dry. I would have liked some sort of sour cream or something to give them a bit a moisture. Out of the three meats the carnitas has the "most" flavor but even that wasnt strongly seasoned. I did not find the addition of the toppings to add much more flavor. This experience was turned around however by the fried ice cream. Not a large scoop, but a scoop of ice cream, cinnamon possibly with the fried shell surrounded by fried tortillas chips sprinkled with powdered sugar and chocolate sauce. This was a delightful end to our meal. The experience turned again when we attempted to cash out our tab. I am not sure if it is typically busy or if it was the crowd due to the "national holiday" but after being acknowledged and told our tab be brought the 2nd bartender, twice looked to us as being ready to cash out. More than twice that 1st bartender was next to or in front of us making drinks for other customers. It took much longer than needed. I would have thought you they wanted the seats to turn over to accommodate more and new patrons since we clearly had finished. I cant say I will be coming back here, especially for food since there are many other options available however based upon the full seats they must be doing something right. read more

Visited here to start off a Sunday Funday (IYKYK). I was prompted to stop in after seeing their FB post about bottomless mimosas and their patio seemed like a perfect spot to enjoy them while people watching on Hertel Ave. Upon arriving, we were greeted by a polite but some what frantic hostess. She seated our party of two and advised they were a little short staffed, completely understandable with Ms. Rona making her encore appearance this summer. Despite this, we decided to stay and try this place out anyway. There was a little confusion about the bottomless mimosa offering. It wasn't on their menu and the server seemed to know nothing about it, however when I brought up the FB post from their page, she said we were good to go! That was great news because the food was a little meh. Not horrible but just not amazing. A little bland, portion sizes were strange (too small or too large on the most random things - think 6 pieces of toast with a side of eggs but only one thin slice of French Toast for the entire French Toast entrée). Despite the slow-ish service and menu confusion, the staff was really trying their best and that's all you can ask for sometimes. I'd love to check this place out when they're a little better staffed. There's a lot of potential here. read more
