chips with red dip

We came here on a Friday night around 6PM because a band we love was supposed to play on the patio at 7. We asked to be seated on the patio, but were told that the 2 empty tables were saved. We were seated inside the almost empty restaurant, and chips and a small bowl of runny red liquid was placed on our table. Our waitress came to take our drink order, and when we asked what was on tap, we were told that the beer kegs had kicked, but we could order something in a bottle. I ordered a frozen lime margarita with a salted rim, and my husband ordered a seltzer. The margarita had very little salt, and the seltzer was served in a can with no glass offered. We ordered queso and it was relatively tasteless except for the sprinkling of cilantro on top. We were not offered any small appetizer plates to eat this on. Next came our tacos. I ordered two with beef, and one with chicken. The chicken was dry and chewy, and tasted like it had been reheated a few times. The beef was also dry and overcooked. This was a very disappointing evening, although we did stand outside on the sidewalk to listen to the great band that was playing on the patio.

Carnitas Dinner

Stopped in at Gramma Mora's on a Tuesday night around 7:30p. The bar was busy with beer league baseball players and there were about 5 occupied tables. We chose to sit outside where the tables and chairs looked like mismatched patio furniture. The service was kinda slow, but our server was very nice. We ordered the chimichanga dinner with steak and the carnitas dinner with chorizo; both with rice and beans. The chimichanga dinner was good, the steak was a little chewy, but it had good flavor. The carnitas dinner was just tacos in a lightly fried shell; the chorizo in it was good. The rice and beans were like warm and had little flavor. Overall Gramma Moras was alright. Not sure if I would go back.

Azteca Burrito Dinner

We haven't been here in quite some time but we were going to be in the area and wanted Mexican so we figured we would visit again. Gotta say that we were disappointed with our visit and probably won't be stopping back again. It was nothing like we remembered it being. Start with the service, which was sub-par. When we entered we weren't immediately greeted and when the hostess/waitress came up front she grabbed two menus, handed them to us and said, "sit wherever you like, I'll find you". No kidding, the place was empty! I wanted a Pina Colada however they were out of the mix so I had to settle for a strawberry daiquiri, which was nothing special. As for the food, I had the Azteca Burrito dinner and my wife went with the Chimichanga dinner. Mine was just ok, nothing special to write home about and not in the same ballpark as other authentic Mexican places in the area. My wife felt the same about hers, just okay and add to it the fact that they gave her refried beans instead of the Sopa that she asked for it just solidified our decision not to come back. She would have mentioned something to the waitress but she never came over to check on us, not once. Not a "how is everything?" Or a "can I get you anything?" Or even a "do you need another drink?" I think this place has run its course in the WNY Mexican restaurant arena and with so many other authentic Mexican places around, this is last on our list.

Gramma Moras was alright we enjoyed the visit the food was just okay nothing special if I'm being honest. Their tacos were just okay I'd expect better from an authentic Mexican restaurant. The staff was super nice and friendly and the queso was yummy! Prices were about hertle expectations which is a bit annoying considering the quality of the food. It's complicated I'm glad I tried but I'm not totally sure I'd be back.

The waitress was very friendly and knowledgeable. She got our drinks quickly because we were just on the tail end of happy hour. They gave plenty of chips and salsa while we looked over the menu. Great selection of food a little bit of everything for everyone. The portions were huge and came out hot. We were too full for dessert.

Excellent service, Amazing food. Have been coming here for years and will continue to do so. The servers are always pleasant, and the dishes are staples. I love the Flautas, and my dad loves the Taco Salad. There's lots of Mexican options in the area but this will always be my number 1!

The Scarlet Vetter says.....it had been forever and a day since I had been here, but an unencumbered day in Buffalo left some time to squander, so I l convinced the hubs to take a jaunt to Hertel Ave to have lunch at this place as he had never been here. I used to go here back in the day when it was on Niagara Street. Then when it moved closer to where I lived in north Buffalo, I was overjoyed. Then I moved out to the Southern Tier in 2009, so it is likely that long since I was at Gramma Moras. The decor is still good with large booths. The facility is clean. We waited a few minutes for someone to come and seat us, but to be fair, we walked in right as they likely opened for the day. Chips and fresh salsa hit the table pretty fast along with some green chile sauce (when our server asked me if I like hot sauce she brought us a sample) Yum. The chips were hot, crunchy and perfectly seasoned. Then an amazing classic Margarita! I ordered the Pueblo's Platter (with chicken) and my hubby ordered the Mexican Stand Off (chorizo). The dishes come with a choice of 2 out of 3--rice, beans or sopa. We took the beans and the sopa (delicious). In all, the food was hot, really good and well spiced. We ate way too much and rolled out of the restaurant. I can say for sure we will be back!

Stopped for dinner on a Sunday evening, we did not have a reservation but were able to be seated after a short delay. We sat inside although the street side patio looked very inviting. The staff was friendly and courteous. After having some complimentary chips and salsa, We ordered a nacho appetizer which was fantastic. It was so large though we took much of our entrees home. The entrees consisted of a steak chimichanga and cheese enchiladas, they were fantastic as well. My wife had a glass of Pinot Grigio. All in all a wonderful meal, we will be sure to return.

Bagged salad in the middle of the plate

Woof! I bought a half off special for here. And boy I'm glad I didn't pay full price for this. Besides lacking any flavor or something unique we were served up microwaved sides and boring main dishes which both had use hesitant to eat. Plus the food was lukewarm at best. The queso had 0 flavor and tasted like flour gravy and the salsa was just there. The atmosphere was the same as it was 20+ years ago I was there last, old, and dingy. This place is sad. Sad food, sad atmosphere and just a complete miss. We were really disappointed especially with so much other Mexican choices around. I'd never go back!

Tacos

The atmosphere was cute and the staff was nice. The food was okay but not anything special. My tacos tasted like something I could make at home, so I would try something else next time. The sopa was very bland I did not eat more than a bite or two, but I liked the beans! Unpictured, but we got dessert as well and the brownie Sundae was very good.

Steak chimichanga dinner with sour cream and guac on side and 2 sides of sopa de fideo.

The food was so ridiculously good that it genuinely put me in a different state of mind. Every bite was flavorful, rich, and satisfying. And the funniest part? I only had one margarita. ONE. I wasn't stumbling around drunk or anything -- I was just sitting there completely overwhelmed by how good everything tasted and suddenly feeling way more flirtatious and sexually charged than any normal person should after dinner. The combination of that margarita, the incredible food, and whatever kind of culinary magic was happening in that kitchen had me leaving the restaurant feeling hot, confident, and extremely ready to make some questionable romantic decisions. Usually I leave a restaurant thinking, "Wow, that was delicious." This time I left thinking, "Wow... I need to go home and figure out what just happened to me." 10/10 food. 10/10 margarita. 100/10 inexplicable horny aftermath. I came hungry and left very satisfied in more ways than one.

The tacos were amazing - I recommend the chicken birria and the pork with pineapple. There is a little condiment bar to add onions, peppers, and salsa. Free chips and salsa. An extensive lunch menu. There is much more than tacos, and the burritos also looked good. There are some non traditional filling options including beef tongue, cactus, and tripe. We also had a shredded chicken and cheese quesadilla which was large and the chicken was nicely seasoned. Service was friendly and got us in and out in less than an hour. Fun Mexican restaurant vibes.

The staff were all super friendly, including the gentleman running the counter who may have been the owner? My friends and I all got burritos - carnitas for me and steak and al pastor for them. I opted for the hot sauce, which had some zip but used in moderation was excellent. The fillings of the burritos were a bit juicy and the bottoms did start falling apart a little by the end, but it sure beats them being dry all day. They had a great selection of drinks, including a number of Jarritos options, and some really delicious looking desserts, including flan and tres leches cake. Next time for sure!

Since it was our first time here I also wanted to try some of the sides to compare to my favorite Mexican spots and we ended up with chips, queso, beans, and chocolate tres leches cake. The toppings bar is absolutely the best in Western, NY with anything that you can imagine (except for radish slices). Our food was ready in just a few short minutes and all was to our liking. My husband felt that the birria was a little bland and I thought the beans were a little too soupy, but considering the spread we ordered and the excellent service that can be forgiven. Great spot if you're willing to make the drive.

We finally went inside and were told another 10 mins after waiting almost 45. So all told it was about an hour wait. I get they're busy but they were not honest about the wait time. Then we were sat in the bar area and it was just very loud and rowdy thanks to what we found out was a rehearsal dinner, seriously it went down about 10 octaves after they left. Our server seemed very frazzled. When we first sat down we were given a smaller dinner menu and told the regular menu was only for drinks. Our server explained they are training a new kitchen. So we go to order and our appetizer came before our drinks. We ordered the guac and it was tasty. When we finally got our margaritas they were good. Then they delivered a queso to the table that wasn't ours, but let us keep it anyway. Then dinner arrived. I ordered shrimp tacos- and chicken came. I had to wait while they made me the correct tacos, according to the bill the server had put them in wrong. I also felt $20 for three taco shells with 3-4 shrimp each was a lot. You can not mix and match taco types. The only toppings provided are a very spicy sauce, cilantro, and onion. I ended up putting the queso on them which was good. Just never had tacos with that limited toppings for the price and no toppings bar. We repeatedly asked for more water during the meal and never got any so my friend had to go up to the bar. We ordered a soft serve margarita (the real reason we were here!) for desert to share as the flavor was chocolate and raspberry twist. It was really good! Very rich and definitely a sweet treat type of drink. The server said the flavors aren't usually like that or as thick as ours was. All this to say I honestly feel they are trying to figure some things out right now. The food itself and drinks were very good. I enjoyed the soft serve margarita and would love to try some other flavors that aren't as rich in the future. Would I go back? Yes but not for a few months. The service piece of this place is not it right now. I wouldn't order the tacos again either as I don't feel the value is there. My friend has been here dozens of times and she said it's never like this. So I hope to give them another try!

Instead of serving courses on separate plates, a standard Mexican restaurant meal aggregates your main item (like an enchilada, taco, or chile relleno) along with all of your sides (typically Mexican rice and refried or charro beans) onto one single, large dinner plate or oval platter. La Catina is plate happy! For my order of 2 tacos, refried beans and rice I was presented with three large rectangular plates. As there were three of us a forest of crockery soon engulfed our booth table what with main course, sides and beverages. Foot placement was uncomfortable because of the crossed beams supporting the table causing one's feet to be tucked in limiting stretching. A specialty dip was a melange of lettuce, taco chips and beans which defied dipping and required a fork. The tacos were open faced and inadequate to the job of ingredient containment and needed a fork. The atmosphere is warm and the staff enthusiastic. My guess is that they have a serving station plan and each station has his own crockery. bottom line and cheerful atmosphere was not matched by the difficulties serving plan.

We watched two tables get up and leave after they sat there with nothing but drinks and one basket of chips for god only knows how long. Our waitress had to ask us to repeat ourselves TWICE trying to order because it's so incredibly loud. However, If there is ANY type of celebration, be it a birthday, someone orders shots, someone orders a margarita tower, hell, if someone walks through the damned door... they somehow turn the speakers up to a 25 out of 10 and blare the most obnoxious club style music at an earsplitting volume, with sparklers, light wands, LED club signs, and light up trays. They even have someone wear a creepy giant sugar skull mask. In the hour that we have been here there have been 22 "celebrations" including 3 separate ones at the table behind us, yes we counted. The real kicker? Every time there's a "celebration," the entire wait staff has to participate. My husbands beer took 20 minutes to get to our table, and our food took 40.
