This place was a train wreck from the second we walked in the door. This was the first and only time I will ever eat here. We sat outside on the little patio and the table was filthy. It turned out to be one of those restaurants that has to check with the kitchen to see if they have items on the menu. Total joke I should have just thrown $50 out the window. I ordered a single beef burrito with queso dinner. What I got was enchiladas. The beef tasted weird and I didn't eat much of it because of this. The rice was garbage. My kids wouldn't even take a bite of the food cause it looked so bad. I am giving it two stars instead of one because the waitress (though slow) was super nice and friendly to my kids. Please just go to one of the many other restaurants in the area. read more

If anyone thinks this food is Mexican you are crazy! Food was so dry and bland!!! Staff in general was an absolute train wreck!! . Loaded cheese fries weren't even edible. Place was dirty if I could give a zero I would. Do not go here read more

Run past this place! Do not eat there. Had the worst Mexican meal ever there. The red sauce on the enchiladas was a thick flavorless tomato paste. The chicken inside was an off tasting mostly flavorless overcook rubbery chunks! The rice and beans were cold! Everything was like it was sitting around at room temperature! My husband's dish had a very small black bug in it that kept trying to bury itself deeper in the cheese. I tried to capture it before he saw it so he wouldn't get sick to his stomach. When the waitress asked me how everything was - I told her all about the food AND the bug and all she kept saying is gee I don't know what to do.... they gave me a $5 coupon for when I want to come back and blow another $50 on horrible dangerous food! I paid a lot of money for the worst meal I have ever had in a restaurant. If they had an off night; no big deal - but to charge me full price! Don't even try it there. I think the practices in the kitchen could be dangerous from neglect and poor practices. You could be risking your health. read more

I enjoy Gramma Moras. I know it's not authentic Mexican fare, still looking for that in Buffalo. Will try a place in South Buffalo this weekend. Anyhow, back to this review, every service comes with complimentary Salsa and Corn Tortilla Chips, nothing to brag about. The Salsa is a Watered-down Pureed Tomato Paste with a few Diced pieces if Onion. For lunch I had the Chorizo Taco Salad with the infamous Salsa, Jalepenos, and Sour Cream. This salad came in a Flour Tortilla Bowl (sad healthier and tastier option Corn Tortilla Bowl) filled with Ground Chorizo, Lettuce, Shredded Cheddar Cheese, and Back Olives. Despite my adding the infamous Salsa, Jalepenos, and Sour Cream there was very little flavor. I was quite disappointed!!!! I've eaten here several times. I enjoy the Beef and Chicken Tacos, Enchiladas, and all of their Quesadillas. The Chorizo is Desperately Seeking Flavor!!!!!! I would like to see Gramma Moras offer more Healthy options on their menu so diners don't have to change the whole order. If you want a quiet dining experience this is the place at least before 7:00 p.m. read more

I had the chorizo and cheese burrito with a margarita, and heir chips and salsa. This is the most Buffalonian Mexican food I've ever had. I think the hot sauce was actually Franks sauce. There is nothing wrong with this, just know what to expect. For American Mexican food, this is a good joint. When I was here it was a pretty slow night on a Friday. I sat at the bar, The have multiple TVs playing the Sabres and NBA. My friend had two tacos and was not feeling good that night. read more

Made reservations and when we showed up, they gave our reservation away to another party of 9. They sat us outside and they had very little patio lighting. It was dark and hard to see. The chips and salsa were not that great as the salsa was almost like tomato soup with a little bit of spice. Their is so many better Mexican restaurants in Buffalo, don't go here. The service was slow and poor. If they used service trays, they won't have to carry everything out one by one and you can service customers faster. I ordered a taco salad with beef and there was hardly any beef on it, mostly lettuce. I had to ask three times for a side of sour cream and by the time I received it, everyone in my party was almost done. Wanted this to be good as I know it's been around a while. read more

We have loved Gramma Mora's ever since the location on Niagara St. Went to pick up a take out order tonight and things were a little delayed. No biggie as their food is totally worth the wait. There was a couple at the bar waiting for a table as it was a very busy night. After some time they became belligerent. On their way to leave one of the waitresses asked the woman to please put her mask on. This woman refused and told the young lady to F-off. Totally uncalled for. If the place of business requires a mask, which we have used to for over a year, comply with the request and do not be so rude to the staff! We will be back in person and for take out, the food is just that good! read more

Came as part of a large group for a birthday party. The restaurant was very accommodating to our large group and gave us two waitresses who provided excellent service. I ordered steak carnitas and had a couple of margaritas. The food was good, although what I got was fairly simple. The margaritas were excellent, one of my favorite in Buffalo. Overall I'd recommend this place to someone in the area looking for quick and tasty Mexican food or a good margarita. read more

Gramma Moras? More like Gramma Lessas. This place is flat out terrible. Everything from the service to the food. My girlfriends and I started by ordering their Margarita tower. There were 4 of us, all drinking the same thing so it seemed like a good option. Something fun we hadn't seen at other restaurants. Our server brought it out and we each dispensed our first drink. We would spend the rest of our time there with the server asking us to hurry up or drink faster or fill our cups again. Apparently these towers are popular and they don't have enough to go around. When the food finally came out I was disgusted and shocked with what was set in front of me. Our server told us there was a toppings bar. We had to visit it to top our sorry looking tacos. We got up, made our way to the topping bar and it was empty. Clearly run dry by other patrons. Our server said they were going to refill it. They did not. We are starving. Our disgusting tacos have no toppings and our server is basically forcing us to drink our margs as fast as we can on our empty stomachs. My girlfriend picked up her cell phone and ordered Lloyd from down the street. I'm dead serious. We sat at Gramma Mora's staring at our disgusting food and ordered food from another restaurant. I have never in life done that before. Our server did not apologize for the tacos or the fact that the topping bar was never refilled. After another 30 minutes, we still had no toppings and our food at Lloyd was ready and waiting. I will never step foot in this place again. read more

No. Do not. Buffalo, just a 10 mins drive even will give you far better options. The ONLY reasons you may wanna pop in here are for convenience and I will give them props for customer service. I CARE about you so I cannot in good conscious recommend this place unless you are desperate and feeling low mex food standards and happen to just be right there in front of it, ya know, in a pinch. It's unfortunate that hertel does not have much to offer with Mexican food and some of the higher class places on Hertel are a little bit gourmet or a little bit difficult to read the menus so yeah it's not my favorite place to go for Mexican--hertel. I used to go here when there was hardly any Mexican places in Buffalo and it was the go to but these days possibly due to Covid I'm not sure it's pretty dead and I know now there's much better in Buffalo than this place. If you want a burrito smothered in all kinds of cheese and maybe you're bar hopping/feeling tipsy as fuck definitely this will suit your fancy though, I'll give it that. And the service certainly was attentive, whether because it was empty or because they just have kind hearts it was certainly attentive. read more

I've been going to Gramma Moras since they were located on the West Side of Buffalo, over 30 years ago. I have only been able to get there twice since Covid began in 2020 but unfortunately both of those times was a not so great experience. They seem to have gone downhill, sadly. It's a long story (which I'm not up to writing all the details at this moment because its 1am) but suffice it to say they are understaffed and because of that the person they had in charge tonight and the host both made it clear when we walked in at 7pm that we should probably take our business elsewhere. A table of 7. When we explained that we had driven quite a ways there and were not in a huge rush and were excited about having Gramma Moras food specifically (after not having it for so long) we were reluctantly seated and then an hour later I was argued with on how/what to order from their menu by this same older lady. And since I've been eating the same dish for 30 years and that has never happened even once before, it did not sit right with me. A good server/manager would never do that. I get the most simple thing on the menu too. But since this older woman who obviously resented being there and being understaffed decided to make our experience unpleasant, we probably wouldn't go back again, which is sad after over 100 good experiences through the years, but we wouldn't want to risk having to deal with her again and feeling unwelcome. If you can't staff your restaurant on a Sunday then stay closed. It's better than overworking the staff you do have and ending up with long term customers having bad experiences. Our young server was actually really good and working very hard I have no complaints about her, it was the older woman who seemed like a manager. She had such a bad vibe since the moment we walked in. It was 7pm and they don't close until 9pm so it was very strange how they seemed to openly resent our patronage. Not cool. My food was also burnt but it was recooked quickly and then was good. But that is all part of why I'm leaving only 3 stars. Before Covid this place was 5 stars. Get your groove back gramma! read more

If you're here for good food, you're in the wrong place. Look for the exit sign and exit the premises. I ordered chicken fajitas. The chicken was cold, dry, and bland. The sliced tomatoes were mushy, the tortillas were cold. When it came to portions, I was disappointed too. No, I Dont eat much but for $14, I'd like to have a decent portion of chicken and guacamole. My plate had about 1 teaspoon of guac and about a cup of shredded cheese and probably two cups of diced tomatoes. If you're thinking "Mmmm cheese", stop. The cheese was hard like it had been sitting out for a while. Also, the mushy tomatoes? Come on son! They also messed up my order. I asked for no sour cream but my plate had about 2 cups of sour cream. I'm not exaggerating. The pic I uploaded shows a bit of sour cream. Not seen is the extra below the cheese and chicken. Lastly, I agree with other reviewers about the salsa. It tastes like watered down ketchup. Chips are too salty and didn't taste fresh. And btw, if you want another serving of this mess, it costs extra. I must add that for 3 people, when our chips came, the salsa cup was in the same basket as the chips. Imagine how much space was left for those salty chips? My bf got a chicken quesadilla (sp) and he said was alright. For $10, it didn't come with sour cream, or anything else. Just a couple of mushy sliced tomatoes and a laughable misery sprinkle of shredded cheese. But he was in good hands because I had about a gallon of sour cream on my plate. So, you're probably thinking that it must have been busy, hence the bad food. Nope, it was just the 3 of us in the restaurant. Now I know why. Please excuse me while I brush that nasty salsa off my tongue. #ThatIsAll read more

Short and simple. Worst mexican food ive ever had! Im mexican and my wife is too. We came here with our Guatemalan friend and we ll ordered something different. I got a large quesadilla (very flat and empty, cheese tasted old, somewhere in there was chicken they say haha! It was bad and the sopa de fidello was bland dry and horibally seasoned). My wife and friend ordered rancho enchiladas and those were not tasting at all like enchiladas. Also horibally seasoned and the cheese they used was not good. Salsa was can salsa or at least tasted like it. And the rice it came with was dry smushed and seasoned poorly. The fried chiken we ordered for the kids came with fries and both were cooked in what seemed old ass oil i mean damn! Thats the only pic i took. So yeah i would never recomend this place to anyone ever! Worst Mexican Food Ever! read more

This was one of the most unpleasant eating experiences of my entire life. All of the chicken and beans tasted canned. The "seafood" enchilada was filled with slimy imitation crab meat. It was inedible. The "sopa" was angelhair pasta with some sort of unidentifiable red sauce on top. All of the food was terrible, and incredibly overpriced for what it is. The service was fine, but not good enough to make this even a two star restaurant. The food was unbelievable bad. read more

Is it Italian Style Mexican food or Mexican Style Italian food?? Are you black with white stripes, or white with black stripes? Point being this is not authentic Mexican fare...in fact it is not even close. Every meal begins with their complimentary salsa. This is unlike any other salsa you have ever eaten...it is more like Sunday Sauce with cilantro. This is the least chunkiest salsa you will probably ever eat...but it is damn good. This is what you get when you put an Italian Spin on Mexican Food (or a Mexican spin on Italian Food)...and frankly I love it.. I've been coming to Gramma Mo's for years and I'll be the first to admit that the food quality is not always top notch. There is definitely an "A" Crew and a "B" Crew in the kitchen and when the "B" Crew is workin' watch out!! Sometimes they do not use the choicest cuts of meats which can have you chewing on some gristle (especially with the pork). The chips are seasoned so poorly that sometimes you bite into one and get a mouth full of salt...and I'm not even going to get started on the rice and refried beans...skip 'em. So why do I keep coming back to eat here...because the entrees that are good are REALLY GOOD!! Stick with the following and you can't go wrong: 1) Chicken Flautas: Two hard shell taco's stuffed with chicken meat, velvety cheese, onions and smothered in chile con queso (nacho cheese), and giant glops of Guacamole! There is nothing gourmet about this meal or healthy for that matter. It is just pure fatty filled deliciousness! 2) Chicken Chimichanga: How do you make an already high fat, high carb meal worse for you...deep fry it. A Chimichanga is a chicken burrito stuffed with their velvety cheese and deep fried...topped with Guacamole and sour cream. It is crispy and delicious and definitely something which should not be passed up. 3) Gramma Mora's Special: Looking to be a little more health conscious...then try the Special with their signature Chile Verde. Gramma Mo's imports the green chilis directly from Mexico to make this sauce. These green chili's are ridiculously hot and flavorful. This dish celebrates the sauce as it is draped over their sauteed chicken. Be prepared to sweat when you enjoy this.. 4) Sopa De Fideo: All of the dinners offer you a choice of either refried beans, Mexican rice or Sopa. Do NOT waste your time on anything other than the Sopa. Sopa is basically chopped Capellini Pasta cooked in their salsa with onions and I believe fried on a stove top. IT IS SOOOOOOO GOOD!! I usually get two servings of the Sopa as I love it so much. I can not explain it...you just have to try it. I started taking my girlfriend here within the past year and she is starting to crave Gramma Mo's as much as I do. She loves the Margarita's here...of course she loves the Margarita's anywhere, its kind of her thing. Gramma Mo's has even expanded to the freezer section of your local grocery store. I believe Dash's may be the only store to carry their burritos, but if you see them grab some. They are better than the burritos you get in the restaurant, and are some of the best Microwave burritos in the market...if you're into that kind of thing. Do not come here expecting authentic Mexican food as you will be let down. However, if you want some Mexican comfort food straight from the heart of Buffalo's Little Italy then stop by Gramma Mo's! read more

I was excited to visit this place after some buzz from a close friend, but was VERY disappointed in the whole experience. The service was polite and attentive, especially considering we were in a very large group, but most of us had something wrong with our dishes when they arrived (including onions on an "allergic to onions" plate). The food was, frankly, inedible. Some of the party seemed to be okay with it, but my meal was very clearly made with american cheese - not only did it taste like American cheese on Mexican food, but I could still see the square shape of it - and little to no seasoning. I found it difficult to believe that I paid that much for American cheese on overcooked, underseasoned chicken. Had I been in a smaller group, I absolutely would have sent it back. I hate to say it, but I've had much better meals at Chilis!! This place is one that I definitely won't return to. As a side note, the font on the menu's item names seems to be an attempt to look Mexican but is just plain difficult to read. read more

Gramma Mora's is unfortunately one of the worst local Mexican restaurants I've been to. I've tried for so long to enjoy it but it's not something I can seem to like. The meat is not cooked well. The blends of spices are seemingly bland. The lack of sides is depressing. I'm not sure why people are in love with this restaurant but I definitely am not. I think it's time to say adios with trying to like Gramma Mora's There are far better Mexican restaurants around and I would rather spend money elsewhere on better more satisfying foods read more

I utterly dislike this place. The only reason I go is because my husband has a place in his heart for it after growing up here. I think its pretty bad. I dislike the food...maybe it's a personal preference but I just feel like everything is slapped together. Today I tried to give the fish tacos a whirl after them being recommended by someone, since they knew I didn't care for anything else in past visits. GROSS! When I think fish tacos I think cabbage, corn tortilla, and maybe a sauce of one variation or another. Not everything that comes on a beef taco... cheese lettuce tomato. So nasty. Then comes the service. Lack there of. ALWAYS CONSISTENTLY AWFUL. They tell you to seat yourself, then talk in the back with their friend for a few minutes before getting your menus. They rarely come by to refill drinks. They don't do a check back to see how the food is...even when they walk by and my fish tacos have one bite eaten and the plate at the center edge of the table. Then after like 20 minutes later when she does check she just asks "is there something wrong?" With an attitude. Obviously! Believe me...the only reason I come here is to make my husbands craving met with it being close to where we live...but that's it. And even though he likes the tacos...he agrees the service is certainly lacking. read more

This place was amazing all thanks our wonderful waitress. I think her name was Grace. She was incredible. My son was crying about his food that was messed up and she spoon fed him his refrained beans cho cho style. He hasn't stopped talking about her since. I have recommended this to so many people and even looked into them being able to cater my wedding in three months (my husband vetoed that because he doesn't like Mexican). Can't wait to go back, but only when that Grace is working. She made the whole experience worth it! read more

It's unfortunate that in places like Buffalo, restaurants feel no shame in calling their cuisine "authentic," since most of the community hasn't had authentic Mexican food. Gramma Mora's is about as authentic as an Ortega taco kit. The food is hastily prepared with very little flavor. I got tostadas because they were the only thing on the menu that offered a corn tortilla (that I saw). The restaurant has the capacity to seat about 50 people (it's way too large), and there were only about 8 people when I came in at 8pm. I'd say avoid this place and hit up Cantina Loco or Llyod's taco truck. Neither of them are "authentic," but they don't claim to be and they're delicious. read more

Every 3 or 4 years I get a weird hankering to go here. I think it's a desire for somewhere nearby that's full of rich comfort food. Typically, a Mexican restaurant would fit the bill, so I look at Gramma Mora's and think, "hmm...maybe it wasn't as bad as I remember..." Then I get the punch in the face I need to keep me out of there for a few more years. Last night my friend and I went in around 9pm. The place was half-full of customers but there were tables. We stood at the door for about 15 minutes before any of the employees acknowledged us. Finally, the sweet older woman working the register realized we were there and sat us, cleaned our table, and brought us chips. She said she would try to find us a waiter. We sat and read the whole menu, I went to the restroom (which is mildly terrifying) and we nearly finished the chips. That's when we said, "you know what? Eff this." Not one waiter had even seen us sitting there, and by this time there were only about 4 other tables to wait on. We got up and left. Yeah, that's not a cool thing to do, but it was clearly only going to get worse. So, in the end, I got my reminder to steer clear for a few years, but this time I didn't have to eat any bland, tasteless excuse for Mexican food in the process. read more

Had a Groupon which expired yesterday to go here. Never knew how busy a place could get on the last day of being able to use one. Place was packed. All in all though they did a good job for being as crowded as they were on a Wed. night. I'm sure they were tired of all these people with groupons, but service was pretty quick with everything and polite too. Wife and I both ordered flautas which came out cooked nicely. Crispy shell, nice chunks of chicken, good amount of guac and sour cream on top. Also got some Sopa and beans with it, which were both good. (Sopa is like tiny chopped up noodles, tossed in a red Mexican sauce and is pretty good here) Sangria and Frozen Margarita were both good too. Had to get a second Sangria even. Again If you have a Mexican craving I'd say it's worth checking this place out. Not gonna blow you away, but not bad either. read more

As another reviewer pointed out, the food is not authentic Mexican. However I have spent most of my life in California so I'm pretty partial to authentic Mexican cuisine. With that said, this place would rate a "3" given that it's WNY and Mexican cuisine is few and far between out here. The place is clean and service was prompt. I came here to eat to escape the debacle of a jam-packed post adult kickball bar event across the street. The quieter vibe at G.M. on a late Wednesday night was nice. The bar area didn't get busy until around 930 pm...so before then you can get your kitchen order back quickly. I opted for the Gramma Mora pork especial. It wasn't really anything but pork chunks in a green sauce. The special noodles people rave about is angel hair spaghetti is a salsa sauce. All in all, I think I'll just try a frozen burrito next time. I see them available everywhere - Lex co-op, Guercio and sons, etc.. read more

"Mi abuela está enferma": you may remember this from your Spanish textbooks. It does sum up the Gramma Mora experience. I love Mexican food, so I eat here about once every two years to see if it has improved. After this evening's "feast," I can say it is the same: at best, boring and mediocre; at worst, stale/spoiled or gross. The service is fine for courtesy and attentiveness. The food is lacking, in both ingredients and preparations. Their "Mexican rice" tastes catsuppy. My pork was grey and greasy; I could barely eat it. Chicken dishes consumed by others in my group appeared similarly stringy and non-fresh. Enchiladas were served with key ingredients sitting atop the tortillas rather than folded inside. It would be nice if the Hertel strip could boast of decent Mexican food, like Transit Road now that it has La Tolteca (which I would give 3 or 4 stars compared to Gramma's 2). In the meantime, I would avoid Gramma Mora's for all but the simplest quesadillas and cold beer, provided that you are in the mood for kitschy México-para-gringos décor. read more

I have never reviewed a place in my life but I must warn whomever is reading this. Do not eat here. The margaritas were $9.50 and tasted like a premade mix. The "queso" actually tasted like spaghettios so if you want a throwback to your childhood give it a go. I have NEVER met Mexican food I didn't like but this left me feeling bamboozled. Hertel Ave bars and restaurants can be very busy on a weeknight during the summertime, particularly those with patios. Between everyone socializing after their soccer and kickball leagues and those watching the World Cup soccer games, you can be hard pressed to find a patio along Hertel that isn't jammed full of people. So when a friend and I were looking for a place to go for a quick bite and a drink we decided on giving Gramma Mora's a try...they're never busy...besides, a margarita sounded like a good idea on a hot night. In the past I haven't been too impressed with Gramma Mora's, but I thought that it was time that I give the place another try. Sadly this visit reinforced my previous experiences here. I ordered a couple different versions of a bean taco and a salted margarita on the rocks While we were waiting for our food to arrive we munched on a basket of complimentary chips and salsa. The chips were not partially good...but not bad either. The salsa was just a poor excuse for salsa. Very thin and runny, with no visible vegetables or herbs. Sure it's free, but shouldn't a Mexican restaurant strive to have memorable salsa (memorable for the right reasons)? The margarita was hands down the worst I've ever had. I'm not sure how or why that is, but it had a weird flavor reminiscent of dirty water. Granted I just ordered a house margarita, but I don't think that the quality of the tequila was necessarily the issue. The taste was off and it was not at all refreshing. Needless to say I stopped at one. Our food came out in a reasonable amount of time. I can't remember what my friend had, but neither of us were too impressed with our food. My tacos were bland and altogether underwhelming. Blah. A real disappointment. Sadly it seems that they really don't have a great reputation for having good food. When I mentioned to a couple friends (on different occasions) that I recently went to Grandma Mora's they both had a very similar response - Does it still suck? In my opinion, perhaps one of the most disappointing things about this place is that it's at a prime location on Hertel Avenue where the restaurant scene is really emerging. Hertel offers all types of quality meal options at every spectrum of cost and value. Unfortunately Grandma Mora's hasn't done much of anything to improve their food and to retain patrons. This area could really use a restaurant that serves excellent Mexican style food. Grandma needs to either step up her game or make room to let a new generation in. Seriously....when have you ever seen a Mexican restaurant with an empty patio on a hot summer evening?? read more

This was seriously the worst restaurant, let alone the worst Mexican restaurant I've ever been to. I couldn't tell if the salsa was created using rotting vegetables or if it was ketchup mixed with water - there was nary a solid vegetable to be found in the cup. I ordered the green enchiladas with rice. You also had the option of ordering "sopa" as a side, which contrary to what anyone whose taken Spanish 101 would think is NOT soup, it's spaghetti or angel hair noodles mixed with the aforementioned "salsa" and heated up (the menu says lightly fried, but I would guess it's more like "lightly microwaved). I actually did wind up ordering the sopa in addition to the rice because it sounded slightly intriguing. It was not. The green enchiladas main ingredient was not chicken, or tortillas or even sauce, but cheese. Lots of cheese. I really, really like cheese and this was way too much cheese. The least abundant ingredient was chicken and the few pieces I managed to come across were gristled. The rice was mush and had no flavor. I had no complaint of the service or the drinks -- it's the food. It's just awful. I don't know how they call this a Mexican restaurant. It's more like "Obese midwestern woman learning how to cook Mexican food via the Campbells soup cookbook". It's really that bad. read more

Let's see if this stands up to a Texan's discerning taste in Mexican food... We came in late, about an hour before they closed. No hostess, but the bartender seated us quickly. The bar was full, but only one other table was occupied. Menus, chips and salsa, and drinks were brought quickly. We ordered the cheese enchilada dinner and chorizo chimichanga. The chips don't seem home made, they're very forgettable. Salsa is very smooth, very little texture. Spicy, acidic, with a good bit of cilantro. Definitely seems home made. Food came quickly. The chimi was about 3/4ths the size of other places, and incorrect (chicken came instead of chorizo). The enchiladas were decent sized, but who fills cheese enchiladas with onions? Gramma Morras does. And they don't mention it in the description, so it made the entire dish difficult to enjoy. The correct chimi was brought out after I notified our server, and I took the chicken home with me. Overall, the food was so/so. The Texan was not impressed.
