Im so frustrated, my family has been ordering cakes at this location since I was a little kid. I ordered a cake earlier this week for my mother's birthday and when we ate it the chocolate part tasted like oil or gasoline just tasted really bad. So this morning I went to see if I can get my money back and this nasty lady (her name was Cathy) was refusing to give our money back. She was trying to give us coupons instead on a $50 cake. Also she tasted the cake which was only the vanilla part and said it tasted fine (that wasn't the part that tasted bad it was the chocolate part. Then she proceeded to try and shove it in our faces to taste it again. This isn't how you treat a value customer like I said we order cakes from this location since I was a kid. I haven't been to a Carvel in ages. Enjoyed this location. Loved looking at the large selection of frozen cakes and treats. There were several large freezer cases filled with a variety of shapes and sizes of cakes. I opted to make my own small icecream creation with cookiedough icecream with chocolate crunchies and sprinkles. The icecream was super creamy and the crunchies were just as I remembered! This carvel is so skimpy. I ordered from door dash tonight. This carvel is literally 4 minutes away from me and my ice cream came melted. Not really sure if they kept my ice cream out or what but they really should keep it in the fridge until the dasher gets there. I ordered a small carvelanche with m&ms and wet walnuts and it was all mostly ice cream. Barely any of the toppings that I had ordered. This is a nice location with tables inside and it always seems to be clean. Anyone behind the counter has always been pleasant and are always polite. I believe the owner, an older asian guy helped me.. I ordered the second smallest cup figuring I could get 2 small scoops of whatever I wanted.. He told me I had to get the next size up which was less than $1 more.. Why have so many close in size options?? And why not give me what I wanted in that cup? Unfortunately sanitary practices aren't used on behalf of the business... One of the kids found a BUG in his ice cream. I thought perhaps maybe it flew into it while he was eating it but wasn't the case. This black insect was submerged IN the next spoonful of ice cream he was about to eat. We all lost our appetite after that and threw all of it out. Guess they don't clean their soft serve machines. Won't be going back and the kids have now sworn off Carvel. read more

Absolutely horrible experience here. Friends and I went in and were all treated rudely by the staff. The girl who took my order didn't even let me finish placing my order before she decided to make something not remotely close to what I wanted. I never got the chance to correct her before she flung it across the counter and then proceeded to treat my friends badly. When one asked for a lid for her cup the same girl scoffed loudly and rolled her eyes before going to get one. The aesthetics of the store were disgusting. My flip flop almost broke after it stuck to the floor on spilled ice cream. Gross!! I was warned about going here due to the unfriendly staff and they were right! AVOID at all costs. Tonight I got Cherry Vanilla ice cream with hot fudge and it was yummy. This location is a walk - in with a counter and a few tables if you want to eat in, great selection of hands scoops, soft serve and toppings and the husband and wife owners are always nice and pleasant. I also love that they are open year round (hey Rita's! ) and never understood the thinking that just cause it's cold you can crave ice cream! read more

I came to visit my sister here in Nutley and her and her bf wanted to get some ice cream so we came here. I was a little reluctant going into any stores because of the pandemic, but she said she came here several times and they seemed to be really good with keeping everyone safe and followed the rules. Ice cream was good, creamy and fresh. I was impressed with the girl who served me, though she was a bit loud (but I'm assuming it's because of the mask and she wanted to make sure we heard her). She placed each of our ice cream in the freezer so it didn't melt while taking the rest of our other orders (which I really liked and I thought it was thoughtful). She was very friendly, she did have to stop taking our orders twice because one customer came in without a mask and she was very quick to tell them they could not enter the building without a mask on and then the second time because this one guy kept pulling his mask down to talk and she had to tell him to keep his mask on at all times.....he was a complete ass hole to her and very condescending....Honestly, they don't really have much specialty flavors, but it was still good. But I'm giving this place 5 stars because they really try very hard to make sure everyone is following the rules and being safe during the pandemic. Also, the girl was professional throughout the entire time that ass hole was yelling at her saying "I can't talk with the mask on!"...it's a mask, not a ball gag you idiot. I was very upset with my recent visit (2/23/18) to this location. Not only was the young lady unpleasant to interact with but they repeatly told us they were closed. It was 9:20pm and their web page and the door said 10pm. We were not going to stay long just enough to finish our ice cream. Well 9:45 came and she says we are closed (in an extremely rude tone). I work in management and would never allow my staff to kick out paying customers or act they way they did. Very upset. Would not recommend this location to anyone. read more

Okay, I have held this back for years. Yet, I feel it's my duty to tell how I feel about this particular Carvel (in Nutley, NJ). First, the main proprietor is flat out rude; yes tve female one. I've ignored it time and again, but after I saw her chew out a teenage female associate tonight (aged approximately 16) for "undercharging" a gentleman who paid a small fortune for an outlandishly priced milk shake, I decided I will be doing business there no longer. Prime example of my frustration: Wednesday nights are "Buy one sundae, get a second Sundae Sundae free night." Here is how stringent she is in her policy. My wife bought and paid for a sundae. I was full and simply asked for a bowl of vanillas cream--which would have cost her less materials and less time to make. However, she said she could only give me a sundae, and I'd have to pay for the bowl of ice cream. Most places which have a similar policy ensure it states "buy one "widget," get the second widget (or something of a lesser value) free. I also find her cheap on her scoop amounts.
