I agree with Saul, this place is a Rochester Irish Institution! I love that this place hasn't changed in years! It's small, warm and cozy! Always a must stop for me on St Patty's day, so welcoming with a great family and staff on hand to help celebrate. Large enough parking lot on the side of the building, with a few spots hidden behind the building. During nice weather, the front of the building is the place to hangout. With a few picnic benches in the grass, perfect for enjoying your drink and watching the traffic pass on by. Inside the bar, its one open room with a average sized bar and accompanying stools. Irish posters and decor everywhere... it's St. Patty's day everyday!!! Lots of tables and chairs for everyone else. However on busy days (St Patty's day) it's standing room only. Also it can busy on football and boxing nights but so much fun! Seems to always be drink specials but drinks are so affordable anyway! With great friendly staff that no matter how busy it gets they always make sure you have a drink in your hand! This has always been a fun easy going dive bar and I don't want it to ever change!

Carroll's Bar and Restaurant is an Irish dive bar on East Main Street near Culver Road. Founded in the 1976, it doesn't look like they have made major renovations since they first opened. The small interior features a bar, dart board, jukebox and a seating area. It is a full bar with a limited draft selection that includes Guinness, Smithwick's and Harp. Although it claims to be a restaurant, the kitchen was closed when I visited on a weeknight, as the venue was nearly empty. I probably won't return, unless it is for an Irish celebration such as St. Patrick's Day.

Great food, especially the Friday Fish Fry! Very reasonable prices. Better get there early on a Friday!

CASH ONLY I can't believe I've never reviewed Jim's before!…read moreThis is a popular breakfast/ lunch spot. It's perfect for catching a bite right before a show at the Blackfriars theatre, right next door. The food is always hot and fresh. Service is fast and friendly. I was staring at strangers' breakfast sandwiches today so I'll be back soon, I think!

There is someone just circling constantly with a pot. This is a cash only establishment, so be advised. There is an ATM. We did go at slightly off peak times, since we weren't working those days, but at those times, the restaurant seems to be a favorite of retired men, which is a good sign for a diner! They have a set menu and a specials board that I think changes daily. There's 2 full pages of breakfast, and at least 2 pages of lunch, plus the board. I'm sure you'll find something you like. I had the same thing both visits - a cheese omelet with hashbrowns and wheat toast. It was really cheesy, and I liked that it was a 2 egg omelet rather than 3, for me it was just the right size. We also split a piece of the rotating coffee cake, cinnamon walnut that day, and it was good - not too sweet, plenty of cinnamon. The guy had their 2-2-2 combo and was happy with that choice. For both of us, breakfast ran about $35, for 2 entrees and coffee, plus the cake.

I enjoyed mine, but my dining companion's (the Saturn) tasted like straight juice. With dinner, I wanted to get a draft beer and was able to sample the two IPAs. While one was tasty, I didn't order one because the beer was lukewarm. I got a burger, and companion got the black cod. The burger is $32 and a full pound and served with a heap of fries. For the price, less than impressed. The overly thick patty was just too much. It was dry and just not for me. I would rather have two well-seasoned and juicy thinner patties. The fries and sauce were good. But not $32 worth of good. The cod itself was decent but it came in a sauce that was cold and odd tasting. Ambiance is fine. It was loud and crowded, but clean. Service was friendly.

From the moment we sat down at a high-top along the bar (10/10 decision upon making the reservation), everything just clicked: warm ambiance, buzzing energy, and service that was genuinely friendly without feeling scripted or rushed. The staff made us feel like they were happy we were there--not just doing their jobs. Now let's talk food, because wow. We kicked things off with the Wagyu tartare (luxurious, balanced, melt-in-your-mouth) and duck croquettes (crispy and well balanced). For mains, my son went with the 24 oz prime bone-in ribeye, and I ordered the 14 oz New York strip--both cooked exactly how steak should be cooked. Perfect temperature, beautiful sear, deeply flavorful. Sides were shared and spectacular: roasted thyme mushrooms, potatoes au gratin, and creamed spinach--which may very well be the best on the planet (I will die on this hill). In the spirit of full honesty, when we come back (and we absolutely will), the two items we'd rotate out just to try something new would be the duck croquettes and the potatoes au gratin. Both were very good, but everything else we ordered--and clearly much of what's still on the menu--has an even higher ceiling of potential, and we're eager to explore it. Dessert sealed the deal. My son demolished a crème brûlée with appropriate birthday enthusiasm, while I tackled the caramel carrot cake, which was decadent in all the right ways and not overly sweet. In short: food, service, and ambiance all exceeded expectations--by a lot. If you've never been here: go. If you go occasionally: go more often. This wasn't just dinner--it was a celebration done right. We'll absolutely be back. Note: while their classic steakhouse menu, with some pizzazz, is perfect... My only want for this place would be for another appetizer selection or two that does not contain any sort of fish/seafood as we have family members with sensitivity - and we were hesitant to order the famous house made chicken nuggets with caviar as we are still finding out the range of foods we need to steer away from.
