Back in 2015 or '16 I foolishly sold my white 2009 Nissan Versa Hatchback to Carmax. At first I was marginally happy with the sale- I knew I was being lowballed in price but I had to sell it quickly and it was convenient. They turned it around a few days later at auction. I only know this because I accidentally left my great grandmother's antique engagement ring inside one of the compartments. I cried Hard when I figured out where it was! I called several times about it, only to told it was sold the day before and they couldn't contact the new owners. I'm sure that actually one of the employees pocketed the ring when they looked over the car before it was sold. The car also had some problems so I was surprised they sold it so fast...probably without fixing those problems.... I'm on this page in 2020 because I miss that ring dearly and I'm looking for some clue about it. It's white gold with an alexandrite as the center stone. read more

Meet Sierra at the showroom she took me out to see the car Was very happy with the car and the price. Took my car in for a trade in so while I was test driving the new car they did an inspection of my car and offered me Top dollar for it I was very pleased. So we bought the new car and trade in the old car. What an easy experience. I did see a couple of miner things that need repair and they said no problem made an appointment and they did the repair work at no cost. I think that's amazing in this day in age where we have to pay for everything little thing even paper bags lol. So I would highly recommended going to Car Max for your next car buy experience you will be very surprised at how great they are. I apologize in advance for the essay I am about to write but this was the best car buying experience ever!! I am a recent college graduate and had been looking to buy my first car. I spent the whole weekend driving to every Chevy dealership in the Bay Area looking for a pre-owned Chevy Volt only to have the car sold out from under me or to be up-charged thousands of dollars to the point where it would cost almost as much as a new one. After coming home empty-handed (and incredibly frustrated), my mom saw a chevy volt on the CarMax website with all the features I had wanted and we gave them a call to see if it was still available. Skip answered on the other end and informed us it was still available and that he'd set up an appointment that afternoon for us to test drive it. We arrived quite early for our appointment so we were told we could go out to the lot to see the car and that it was unlocked so we could play around with it if we'd like. As soon as we got to the car, a lady approached us and told us Skip was still working the phones but that he'd be out in about 15 minutes to help us. About 10 minutes later, Skip came out to greet us and immediately took us out for the test drive. Of all the test drives I've ever done, this was by far the most enjoyable. Skip immediately struck up conversation and made it feel like I was just driving around with a friend (a stark contrast from the reps I had dealt with previously who sit there silently making me feel like I'm back to being 16 taking my drivers test). He ensured that I got the most out of my test drive by having me test out making u-turns and reversing in the empty parking lot nearby. Although I had known I wanted to buy the car as soon as I began test driving it, Skip never made any attempts to pressure me into buying it and that was something I really appreciated. After returning from the test drive and letting him know I wanted the car, Skip threw a "Sold" sign on the car and we went inside to fill out the paperwork. Although the paperwork process did take a while (approx 2 hours - they were super busy this day), it really was a breeze. There was no haggling or feeling like I was being overcharged. The price listed was the price I was paying (although I did add on the extended warranty, which I knew I would do, but the prices were incredibly reasonable). Skip was with me through the entire process and made sure I understood all my options. And when all the paperwork was completed, he sat with us until the car came back from being washed and helped me brainstorm some names for my car (we drew a blank that afternoon but he has since texted me names he came up with). I truly cannot say enough about this place, and especially Skip. You can tell he really loves his job and is just a genuinely good person! My daughter wanted to upgrade from her Chevy Cruze, into a midsize SUV. Today was just a window shopping day, as she had no idea what she wanted. We went to 3 different car lots and immediately were hounded by salespeople. Even though we asked to be left alone, they continued to follow and yell out their recomendations. Then we went over to CarMax. As soon as we walked in, it felt so relaxing and I didn't feel like I'd be harassed. We were greeted, ask for our name and number and told we'd get a call when someone was available to help. They asked what we were interested in and directed us to the area we'd find the midsize SUVs. About 45 mins later we received a call and my daughter told Alex where she was and that she had located the car she wanted to test drive. The test drive was done and Alex went over some logistics. We explained that we needed to return home to pick up her car that she wanted to trade in and we needed to eat. Later my husband and daughter returned to CarMax, they received a fair appraisal, completed the paperwork and my daughter had her new car. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars was because of the finance charge rate my daughter received. When reading the information on the sticker, it stated the rate for good credit but she received a higher rate. My daughter's credit score is close to 800 and the rate CarMax gave her did not reflect her score. I wish I would have returned to the showroom with her, to question it. We'll call to see what the reason was for the rate. Anyways, besides the finance rate we did have a great experience. When ready to add a second car, my husband and I will be visiting CarMax. read more

It was awful from start to finish. They first had me come 6 hours, only to find out, that the vehicle that they had listed, was in fact, the wrong vehicle in stock. It didn't contain the package, that I was told that it had, and which I requested. I was then told that the registration and plates would be available with in 2 weeks, or so. The was also a lie. They never filed the paper work, because they lied about having possession of the title, & now almost a month later, they still haven't been able to secure the title. They also knew, that I needed the plates and registration, in order to work. Worst experience ever! Never buying from them again, & already filed a complaint, to the better business bureau. I had the greatest experience here. The process was streamlined. I chose CarMax for financing because the application was simple, I didn't have to dig up all my previous employers, family members and my entire social network. I cannot named three personal references and seven years address OMG! So yeah the place was busy but they had plenty of staff and I didn't have to wait long, They have coffee and clean bathrooms. They actually accepted my trade in and I was back on the road in just a few hours. I really enjoyed having time to walk around the lot and look at all the cars without anyone bothering me it really was no pressure and I got to pick the car that I really wanted. Terrible experience with incredibly rude, disinterested sales associates. When we arrived we were greeted by an associate. He told us to look around and come back in when we found a car to test drive. After we found a couple we were told that we were next on the waitlist. An hour later I went up to check the status and a woman sales associate was told that we were next. When she saw that we wanted to test drive a car, not knowing I was standing right there, she told the other associate that she didn't want to help us and to give her somebody else. From the moment we got into the car lot, it was definitely very different from visiting any other dealership that we've gone to in the past. She answered every question that I had and she was able to help me get situated even though I was late to my appointment. Once we got situated, she transferred me over to another associate, Liz. I'm writing this review so far and will update it as this transaction progresses. So far it's been a headache. I'll elaborate. We went in to carmax to sell our truck. We just wanted to generate some cash to put towards a new one. Possibly across the street at the dodge dealership. Our salesperson/buyer upon completion of their offer for our current truck, found a newer truck that would suite our needs perfectly. And at a good price. Caveate. It's in New Mexico. Ok. We're told the truck would be here in two weeks. We've called them several times during the last three and a half weeks( a week and a half longer than the promised time) and still no truck. Finally I have to call the carmax in mew Mexico myself, and find out what's going on with the truck in question. They say it hasn't been shipped yet. Its, still on the lot pending shipping. The problem was (as explained to Me) was that the vehicle won't fit on a standard trailer. It's intended use is to trailer horses. And is rather large. Which brings me to my point. We we're told inside of two weeks. We had plans to use the new truck. These plans have been waylaid due to the delay of this vehicle not being shipped. No one at carmax followed up to let us know what was going on with our order unless we called them. And maybe let us know so we can schedule accordingly. A little thing called common courtesy. And good business practice. That's, all for now. Hopefully we'll see our truck soon. Stay tuned! Addendum: so we finally got the truck. But it was no easy task. Maybe my preview, review jump started their need to get this sale back on target. Or was it calling over and over. Not only the calliing the livermore location. But the new Mexico location where the truck was being shipped from as well. Trying to get a hold of someone in charge, that could actually find out what was going on. Probably a little of both. But the thing is, at one point they just gave up on the sale. Couldn't figure where the truck was, or if it had been shipped etc, etc. Not acceptable. So I had to go digging for them. And what a surprise! I found out where it was and what had gone wrong. Not my job. Their job. To do, all I had to do to get my gal her truck. Seriously they should give me a job cause I get shit done! Oh that's right, I already have one. Working for myself. Cause I hate working with folks that are incompetent and lazy. I'm keeping it at two stars cause it was exhausting getting this sale done, so my gal could have the truck she had her heart set on. Hopefully in the future they'll do a better job of tracking orders and communicating with their customers when things get dicey. One last thing. The two shining stars in this, are Andrea and Josh who helped get this sale back on track. Kudos to you guys. Addendum: I've raised it to 3 stars. The follow up on issues with the new-er truck have been met with satisfaction for the most part. They do seem to want to make good in what was a huge mess in the beginning. But unfortunately timelines were not met. And they said they would replace the tires too which never happened so only bumped it up to 3 stars. To be continued? Is there another star to be added? Hmmm, I see ratings basically at two extremes. My experience? Well, basically it was very positive and I am very satisfied with my purchase of a Honda Odyssey minivan. I did a lot of background analysis of what I wanted and then began my efforts to procure the vehicle I wanted first through a dealership (I'm a tad old school being 67 but I'm not adverse to technology and new ways of doing things). After a negative outcome at a dealership I began to look into buying my car from a place such as CarMax. I looked into other vendors, such as TrueCar, but decided I wasn't comfortable with signing off on their legal agreement. Friends of mine suggested CarMax as they had "heard" it was pretty good. I researched my options online and after considering all the issues including the technical and financial aspects, I decided CarMax looked like the best prospect for me in the Bay Area to get the car I wanted, with the mileage and features I wanted, and at a price that was reasonable to me. When I went with my brother to CarMax in Pleasanton, I found their office to be pretty well laid out and inviting. I had already called beforehand so that I had an appointment so that I wouldn't have to wait for an unreasonable amount of time. Unfortunately, I did have to wait for about an hour as the car I had placed dibs on was being prepared, which was supposed to have already been done. Nevertheless, I was then able to inspect the vehicle and test several features before I was allowed to test drive it, and at that without the sales rep breathing down my neck. I was completely satisfied with my evaluation of the car and returned to the dealership to close the deal. I was further impressed by the vetting process CarMax carried out to verify and certify the condition of the vehicle, which was a factor in my decision to buy through them. The prices listed on line are declared to be non-negotiable and so I was prepared to pay it and we started the process of dealing with all the paperwork. The sales rep taking care of me, Boyd W., who was just 18 y.o., was very professional and took care of guiding me through the process shunting me to the financial department to close the deal with all the remaining financial and legal paperwork. Overall, the whole experience was a very positive and stress-free one for me and I have been very happy with my purchase through CarMax. I would highly recommend anyone to go to them with the only caveat being: do your homework first about all the details involved in the purchase, namely the features of the car you want and evaluate the price it's being offered at through CarMax to see if it's reasonable to you. Not happy with Carmax in Pleasanton AT ALL. Bought a Honda Pilot 4 months ago, the front breaks have to be replaced and most likely new rotors. I can't believe they are allowed to sale vehicles with unsafe brakes. Spoke to Mark, he had to speak to "The Powers That Be"and of course it wasn't in my favor. All they could come up with is, "well we don't know how hard the car was driven or if the driver rides the brakes" c'mon, take responsibility. I had heard good experiences at this place so had my son look into getting a truck through here while he's home on leave for the holidays. We found one in Bakersfield that could be transferred for $149 so exactly a week ago the transfer was requested. Mike is the rep my son was dealing with and he wanted to get him pre-approved. The amount out the door he quoted was higher than it truly was (once we asked for the info in writing), he got his age wrong when running his credit and the loan amount came back crazy high. We got my son pre-approved through a credit union for way cheaper and were waiting to hear confirmation that the truck was being loaded up for transfer. We never got that call. 3 days later we call and leave a message with Mike, no response. Friday call again and leave a message asking what is going on with the truck. Mike calls back and says it hasn't been picked up but that it should only take a day since it's only down in Bakersfield and that he'll call back with an update. Never got an update call. Today is Monday and once again a message is left for Mike. I tell my son to talk to someone else and ask what is going on. Sure enough the transfer of the truck is never requested but he charged the $149 transfer fee to my son's credit card. Thankfully the woman my son spoke to said she'd refund it but now my son has to leave back to base tomorrow and the truck won't be here in time. Very poor experience and customer service. I was really hoping things would go smooth as I'd heard they are supposed to but now you've lost a sale and all my family and friends as potential customers. read more

We thought we might sell our car to carmax, what a joke. This was a total waste of over an hour and a half to just get a price from them. Upon sitting down with another one of their untrained consultants they gave us a price that was far below Kelly Blue Book and about $7k below what they would turn around and sell it for. In addition they said it was in perfect shape...but needed a transmission. This concerned us so we took it to two mechanics, it did not need a new transmission, it needed a wheel bearing which we had done. We turned around and sold the car for 2x's what they offered. Customer service was good, Car here that I went for was in good condition with some scratches on back bumper. -Price of the car was almost $1800 more than the Kelly Blue Book price(widely accepted even by major car dealerships) and also the service plans were terrible for the car(Acura 2008 TL-S). I wish I could give NEGATIVE 5 STARS. Their service department sucks. You can never reach anyone and when you do you will be on hold for at least 15 minutes. I purchased the extended warranty I brought my car in on the 9th and Carmax said they didn't receive approval until the 16th. That is a lie because the warranty company sent approval the same day. Their shuttle service from the bart station is also horrible. I waited at the bart for more than 45 minutes and I eventually had to use uber. I wish this location would get shut down!!! read more

We made an appointment online to sell our old car. Appointments were required due to COVID19. The confirmation message said someone would call to confirm the appointment time. We didn't receive a call the next day so my husband called to confirm. They guy said that they weren't too busy so the time requested would be fine. We pulled into the lot and waited about 10 minutes for someone to come out. The employee was nice. He took down some basic information and said someone would be out to inspect the car in a few minutes. 20 minutes later, a different employee came out to look at the car. He took a look inside and out, then said he would talk to his associate and someone would come out in about 15-20 minutes with an offer since they weren't busy. We waited for 40 minutes before calling to make sure they hadn't forgotten about us. They said they were working on it and would be out soon. So we waited... and waited...and waited some more. Finally after 10 minutes longer, another employee came out and said they'd like to make an offer. Before we could sign the paperwork, they needed to take it for a test ride to make sure it worked well. No problem. About 10 more minutes for the test drive and the employee said everything was great and someone would come out with the paperwork soon. We started to get a little worried when employees started leaving for the day and we were standing there without a car, drivers licences, title, or money. Finally, after another 45-50 minutes ANOTHER employee came out with the paperwork. From the time we pulled in the lot for our appointment to the time we finished the paperwork, we had been there a grand total of 2 hours. Everyone was jovial so I would consider coming back, but hopefully earlier in the day so that I could leave before the place closes. Moral of the story, leave your schedule open if you plan to buy or sell to Carmax. read more

Carmax Ripping off a Little Old Lady; Car Sellers Beware! My father passed away a year ago and my mother went in to the Carmax in Pleasanton in November to valuate and sell his Corvette; 45K miles, fully loaded, in good mechanical condition, well maintained with some minor body damage. The Carmax rep quoted their "blue book" which valued the car at $2,650 and Carmax offered to buy the car for $2,500. Fortunately we did some research ourselves and referenced the standard Kelley Blue Book as well as other widely accepted valuation sources and Kelley quoted their "low" book valuation as $11,000 and the "high" book valuation as $13,000; the latter of which is probably more realistic for a car "loaded" with all options like this one. This valuation range isn't even the retail price for this car. Imagine offering to buy her car at 20% of the car's true value! Talk about unscrupulous, shameful, ruthless behavior taking advantage of someone in a vulnerable position. Shame on you, Carmax; you are greedy and misrepresented your "blue book" valuation as being the car's realistic value. Car Buyers as well as Car Sellers BEWARE AND DO YOUR HOMEWORK BEFOREHAND. This is another example of why used car salespeople have such bad reputations; preying on and taking advantage of people's trust. I will NEVER use nor ever recommend this Carmax company or their services. read more

We had a great experience buying a used Prius from Carmax, Pleasanton. Everyone was friendly, helpful, and low pressure. We also had them appraise our old vehicle, and the price they offered us was right inline with what we expected from doing our own research ahead of time. We first visited on a busy Sunday and spent about an hour looking around the lot before a sales representative was able to help us (My one piece of advice is to make an appointment for an appraisal and/or test drive before you go. I had no idea they would be so busy!). We had a terrible experience at a dealership when trying to buy our last car, so the low pressure, no haggle atmosphere at Carmax was a wonderful change from feeling like we were fighting for the best deal on our last car. They did not have quite what we wanted on the lot, but we were able to view and test drive enough cars to be fairly sure of what we were looking for. A few days later a car we were interested in showed up on-line at the Carmax in Reno. We had it transferred to our local Carmax with no fee or obligation, made an appointment to see it the following weekend, and bought it that day. Based on our on-line shopping and price comparisons it was a very competitive price. Larissa who did our initial test drive and helped schedule the transfer, Jenny who helped us with the actual purchase, and the woman who did all the sale paperwork, were very quick to respond to my questions and all made sure we were aware of our options (such as extended warrantee) without making us feel pressured to spend extra money. *UPDATE* Well it's so unfortunate I'm having to write a new review especially after such a great purchase experience... AND now they've lost a good customer too!! We've had our car less than 2 months and after some minor issues within the initial 30 days which Carmax Pleasanton took care of , we've now encountered a more serious mechanical issue. Called Carmax Pleasanton yesterday to let them know the car was totally inoperable and being towed to their service center. I was advised that while we could have the car towed there the next available appointment was 12 days out and that basically my car would just sit there and I'd be without a car for almost 2 WEEKS!!! I pleaded with them to see if it could please be sooner as it was NOT drivable and experiencing major issues, I was again denied. My husband actually called too as he couldn't believe it! We spend a lot of money for a car we've only had for 7 WEEKS that we CAN'T DRIVE and you won't even TRY to accommodate us?? Seriously?? So I called Fremont Carmax to see if they would get it in sooner and was told the next appointment was in 8 days BUT they would try and fit it in especially if there was a cancellation (which I was told there almost always is a cancel or no show daily. The service rep said for example they had 10 appointments that day and 3 were no shows or canceled last minute). So I called Pleasanton back to say Hey Fremont will fit my car in if they have a no show/cancel can't you do the same? And was told NO that is not their policy. UGH!! So while Fremont Carmax service was so much more helpful than Pleasanton we ended up just having it towed to the closest dealer who said they'd take it as a priority due to the nature of the problem. Which they did and within an hour of the tow dropping it off had our diagnosis and repair estimate. I guess Pleasanton Carmax only cares for their customers while you are making that big purchase but could care less what happens afterward. read more
