They offered almost 3k more than Ford did! The offer lasts a week. Make an appointment. You bring your paperwork and vehicle. They confirm everything is as you said. And they cut you a check. Done! I had an appointment for a vehicle inspection. I arrived and gave my name and that I had an inspection appointment. They had no information at all. So I was treated as a walk in. Ok. The sales woman was so uncooperative and difficult. She didn't listen at all. Talked over me. Kept repeating we had to do this "the old fashioned way" to price the truck. Well,yeah. That's why I had an "inspection " appointment. She had the info. Erased it intentionally! Then asked me for it as if she hadn't had it. While I was pulling it up she kept badgering me. I asked her politely to give me a moment and I would have it for her. But no. She just kept pushing. Finally I realized I would not be treated fairly, picked up my stuff and said I was leaving because I wasn't comfortable. She said snottily she wasn't either. She followed over to the front dest and started talking over me while I was telling the counter person about the problem. So whether she doesn't like older women, arabic last names ( my ex husband's) or blue hair I'm not sure but there was a prejudice there. read more

I reserved a car for a test drive, which involved phone calls, text messages, and emails to confirm the status of my reservation, the stage of delivery, and date of arrival. I was given a tight window to see the car, and I dutifully made an appointment. After doing so, I received multiple text messages and emails confirming and reminding me of my appointment. I showed up on time, having driven all the way to pleasant Hill. When I arrived, I was told there would be a two hour delay for me to even see the car. This was at 6 PM on a Sunday evening. Despite all of the confirmations and reminders and constant communication by Carmax, Pleasant Hill location informed me they have nothing to do with the reservation system. Carmax is just another shitty car dealership. Don't waste your time. read more

The downside, I had to wait for almost an hour, even though I had an appointment. That's the ONLY reason they're getting 4 's When I got an estimate on my car they offered me a certain amount and that's exactly what I walked out with! That part was epic. This continues to be the worst car selling company who doesn't care at all about their customers and the torture they put them through. I was in the market for a luxury Lexus LS 500. I went an hour and a half each way to a CarMax on the peninsula to look at a Lexus and when I got there the car was so disgusting. It was a smoker's car and the beige interior on the headliner over the passenger and the driver was jet black from smoke with burn marks in the headliner on the door and the steering wheel and it was all gouge. It smelled so bad of smoke I could hardly test drive it. Then we paid $149 to have a car from CarMax in Arizona sent to Pleasant Hill. It was very nice car but the smell was so bad. They promised if I signed that they would clean it up before I came back from dinner. Of course they lied. This car smelled so bad from old rotten baby formula that permeated the car and I wasn't able to drive it because I was getting a headache. While the car was back with them to get the hood fixed and get the smell out they gave me a loaner car. This was a smoker's car too that stunk really bad. It has been hell trying to get anyone to help with replacing the car for an exchange. The manager flat out lied that he get back to me even though I left several messages over several days at work and left a message on his personal cell phone that he gave me. He was going to hold another car at the Stockton location for a possible Exchange. We wound up going directly to Stockton and exchanging the car there. It's quite obvious they just purchase cars and don't even clean them to resell them. The management for this company is so disorganized. You never get to talk to the same person twice that's if you can get past the obnoxious stupid AI when you call their number. Also, even if you complain with customer service they won't even get back to you about your situation. Never again! read more

My husband and I were on the hunt for a Kia Telluride, and our search brought us to a Concord dealer right across the street from CarMax Pleasant Hill. We didn't expect to find "the one" here, but decided to stop by and see what they had anyway. When we walked in, no one was at the front desk, but since we've been to way too many CarMax locations this past month, we knew the drill--we headed straight to the used car lot. We spotted a 2024 Grand Highlander we loved, but with how new it was and how few miles it had, it was definitely out of our budget. We did find a couple of Kia Tellurides, which is what we were really interested in, but unfortunately they were already reserved. On our way out, we noticed a gorgeous Porsche. Of course it wasn't for us, but the doors were open, and hey--a girl can dream! We sat in it, and one of the sales guys came out and asked, "Want to turn it on??!" Umm... WHY NOT?! It sounded amazing, and it was so much fun just to play with it. The sales guy was super friendly and even ended up in a 10-20 minute debate with my husband about how Concord is the Bay Area (spoiler: my husband will never agree). I wish we could remember his name--he was working late on a weekend, young, tall, skinny, and African-American, I believe. I hope he gets credit for his wonderful service. Before we left, he made sure to talk business and even pulled up some vehicles that weren't reserved, just to see if they could work for us. Honestly, we really liked him and appreciated the effort. The only reason we didn't move forward here is because we're too far from home and would prefer to work with CarMax Fremont since it's closer. That said--his service was so outstanding that if we lived closer, we would've 10000% worked with him. read more

Don't assume their cars have all had the 125-point inspection. Pleasant Hill and many other locations are woefully understaffed so it is taking an inordinate amount of time to get anything done, and it looks like corners may be cut along the way. A car I was interested in started off in Sacramento and you can see in the picture of the engine compartment that the EV battery coolant level was low. It was not addressed in Sac during the few days it was there before being shipped to PH. The car arrived in PH on Thursday but wasn't available for a test drive until Wednesday. All the while it was said to be going through a "final quality inspection." It wasn't. They only discovered the coolant problem when they brought the car around for my test drive and a warning light lit up the dashboard. It not only had low coolant, but a broken sensor and cracked coolant cap. If an inspection had been done at either location, this would have been easy to spot. I asked an employee why this wasn't found earlier (i.e., during an inspection) and he replied that "no one else had done a test drive yet." One of the reasons I was drawn to CarMax was because they touted that every car goes through a very thorough 125-point inspection, which would give me some peace of mind about buying a used car. That may happen on some of their cars, but it apparently didn't happen on this one. read more

Disappointing and dishonest post-sale experience I purchased a vehicle from CarMax Pleasant Hill approximately four months ago and also purchased the MaxCare extended warranty. Unfortunately, my experience since then has been extremely disappointing. After brake squeaking developed, CarMax scheduled an inspection themselves at Midway Muffler. The mechanic found that the brakes and rotors need replacement (rotors are warped) and that the brake fluid and oil are dirty and overdue. The estimate totaled approximately $1,050. When I reviewed the vehicle's service history, I found: * The last oil change was 3/9/24 * The brakes were last checked on 7/10/24, with a recommendation to be checked again by 7/10/25 The vehicle was sold to me on 9/10/25 without documentation showing either service was completed prior to sale -- despite the rest of the vehicle's service history being consistently and clearly documented for years. When I contacted CarMax, I was told there was "nothing they could do," and then told the services were performed -- yet no documentation exists to support that claim. I was also told the repairs were not covered, despite the vehicle being owned for only four months. Brakes and rotors do not warp within four months under normal driving. This appears to be a pre-existing condition that should have been addressed before the vehicle was sold. CarMax markets trust, inspections, and quality. My experience reflected none of that. Buyers should carefully review service records and not rely on verbal assurances. read more

John is the worst! F I V E STARS, excellent customer service & care. Our daughter cried when we left the dealership due to all the fun she had inside the building. CarMAX gave us the most money for our trade in and they honored the previous offer that had originally expired. We found a fully loaded SUV within our price preferences. So technically I bought my Audi from this Car Max. I saw the car and test drove at Car Max in Modesto. It was going to be a pain to pick it up in Modesto and they offered to transport it anywhere I wanted at no additional cost. Dang! Hence, ended up in Pleasant Hill. Had a short wait to get the paper work done since they were super busy but once at the desk from start to finish and driving off the lot was super smooth. CarMax is average or better (sometimes more than better-than-average) for the car buying experience. But you had better hope they don't have to do any post-sales service on the car. In the latest example (sadly, this is the 3rd -- but last -- CarMax vehicle I've dealt with this), we took my daughter's car in 1 week after we bought in order to get a covered windshield replacement (it had a crack they didn't disclose) and a minor paint touch-up. We were told it would be a "2-3 day repair" but that was TWO WEEKS ago now and we're still waiting. Worse, you call their service center to get an update and the phone just rings, and rings, and rings before you speak to somebody who more often than not is clueless and is just trying to get rid of you. This is NOT AN ISOLATED INCIDENT. This is the standard of service at Carmax. Caveat emptor! read more

I was sold a car with unsafe breaks that needed $3,000 worth of repairs. CarMax Pleasant Hill showed me their extensive vehicle inspection report when I bought the car, which they said included inspection of breaks and that they would have fixed unsafe brakes prior to vehicle sale. They must have made a mistake because I had the car checked out at the Toyota dealership auto shop and they found the rear brakes were2 ml thick (they should be at least 4 ml for safety) as well as water pump leak. Together these repairs cost almost $3,000. I purchased a $37,000 car and now I feel swindled. I contacted the Pleasant Hill service dept. the same day I got the news from the toyota dealer and they told me they'd address my concerns, but then there was no follow-up, no communication for a week. The corporate CarMax customer service assigned me a case number and analyst to support, saying she'd follow-up with me in 24-48 hours. That didn't happen either. I am considering returning the car. I am very disappointed with the service I've received from Carmax. It was easy to buy the car, but not easy to get accountability from them when they should be paying for these repairs as part of their "30-day limited warranty" promise and as part of their promise to sell cars that have gone through basic safety inspections. read more

Buyer beware! Do not complete the paperwork ahead of time, before you inspect the vehicle with your own eyes; fortunately, despite their repeated attempts for us to complete the paperwork ahead of time, we didn't. The vehicle was transferred from Bakersfield. We received email updates, noting that they were going to inspect and clean the vehicle before reaching out to schedule an appointment. An appointment was scheduled, two days in advance, so they knew we were coming. The vehicle was dirty, there were a lot more imperfections than what was reported and the "sales person" had no clue how to open the convertible top. He told us that most customers never check convertible tops. He told us that nobody on-site could assist us with checking the operation of the convertible top. Apparently, Carmax employees are not paid on commission - which is fine, it's their business. Unfortunately, that leads to employees that clearly aren't motivated to do their job. Reserved a car on April 16th. It's June 8th and still haven't been given the opportunity to see the car in person. I've had two 24 hour test drives cancelled on me just minutes before I was supposed to go in. The car had to get sent out for service. Car came back from service and problem still isn't fixed so I still can't test drive it. During this whole process, the communication has been considerably lacking. I had to call so many times to get answers and updates, and every time I was getting an agent who wasn't even at the store. I also still haven't been told exactly what's wrong with the car even though I've asked multiple times. Nearly two months later and now I'm being told that I should just look for another car. No discounts on vehicles or maxcare offered after all of this because "no haggle pricing". I asked if I could get a free transfer from anywhere and they said the most they'd cover is around $200 which barely reaches out of state. Do NOT transfer vehicles to this store. If you're looking at a car that is already there, get it shipped to another store and make the drive, trust me. Do anything to avoid this location at all costs. read more

CarMax is very well organised. The facilities are very spacious and are built to meet all the customer needs while on site. The staff is trained well and are very low pressure sales. Just as I like it. I love going there and I go often. I look at their cars. Almost all cars are open. You can go inside the cars, sit and get a good feel of the instruments, the interior and comfort. If you see a car you like, you can call the rep and go test drive the car. The trade in process is very friendly, very quick and fair. Also, I had two cars valued there and elsewhere and the offers they gave me were the best. I took many friends who share the love for cars with me. They all became frequent visitors. Went in at around 5:00pm 4/21/2026 to test drive an AWD car working with sales rep Dominic. I went to inspect the car and noticed the AWD had mismatching tires and tread was balding. Went to proceed to go test it anyways. Came back to service entrance and went to inspect outside of AWD car and overheard a couple customers who looked like they were complaining about their purchase car's battery being berated by an employee. It didn't seem like the employee was trying in anyway to de-escalate their situation as it carried on inside the store a bit. Anyways I wanted to purchase the AWD car but addressed the mismatching tires and lack of tread and Dominic said he needed to partner with his manager to figure it out. Dominic then pointed it out on the service checklist and showed that the tires had been in fact "repaired/replaced" but I noticed it wasn't even checked off as "CarMax Standards". I then educated him that AWD cars need to have matching tires to even be safe to drive as it also messes with the car's computer and sensors. He finally then "partnered with manager". That manager was the same guy who was berating the couple outside of the service entrance. They both went to the car to check tread over and overheard and over while trying to figure out what to use as an excuse. They came back in and said it was As Is and there was nothing they can do about it as the car was already repaired even though the company standards weren't met on paper. We left and came back the next day and Tatiana and her manager was the absolute opposite and wanted us to wait a couple weeks for a call to get the tires addressed and replaced ASAP for our safety and to absolutely meet CARMAX standards and safety concerns. My recent experience selling my car at CarMax was extremely disappointing. They dont value time. I checked in 10:01am, i waited for almost 2hrs for someone to assist me. I will understand if theres only like 2 or 3 people and its really busy, BUT NO!! lot of employees just walking, passing by. First day, they gave me the offer. but they had me come back within 7 days. i asked them "why do i have to come back? im really gona sell the car and nothing can change that." but did they listen? no. so i came back the 2nd time. when i came back, the employee asked me questions, questions that i've already answered during the 1st day. the wait times are UNACCEPTABLE and i had to repeat the reason for selling everytime someone seats on the chair. Employees does keep proper notes or does not endorse to each other. This process shows a clear LACK of COMMUNICATION and shows no respect on time. The entire experience felt very inefficient and avoidable. i thought the process is going to be smooth, efficient and professional, but it turns out far below the standard. I finally found one I liked and paid a small fee to get it transferred from Roseville/Sacramento to the Pleasant Hill location. Customer service was quick to call/text about my order and answer any questions. Took a few days for arrival. Went to pick up the car when ready and had the pleasure to work with Edward. I had a really good experience here. I shipped in a car from Arizona and it took a couple days longer than expected to be ready for a test drive, but other than this everything went very smoothly! During the test drive we didn't notice a chip in the windshield. After signing the purchase paperwork, our sales person noticed the chip and made sure our windshield was replaced for free. Someone actually came to the house to replace it, and I didn't have to pay anything. We got our plates and ownership paperwork really fast (which wasn't the case for the last car I bought), so this just goes to show that they are on top of submitting necessary paperwork. After a few weeks I even got an $11 check in the mail from CarMax stating they had slightly overcharged me for one fee and that the check was reimbursing me for that overage. Random, and cool! Why not? I appreciate an honest business. I never would have noticed but sure I'll take back a few bucks. I just want to note that I was also looking for cars on Carvana, but being able to test drive through CarMax made all the difference. I sold a car to Carmax 6 months ago. I am receiving toll evasion violations, parking tickets and speeding tickets addressed to me for the car I sold to Carmax because it was not registered to a new owner when they bought it. It is clear that the appropriate paperwork was not completed with the DMV. I have had to continue to fight these tickets and toll violations. I called and spoke to a representative who said all they could do was send my tickets to corporate, did not admit fault for the mistake. Also when I asked to speak to a manager (Alfred) this request was denied. Do not sell your car to them. read more

CarMax in Pleasant Hill, CA is not your grandpa's dealership. I was pleasantly surprised at the ease of purchase and service we received. Chris was our sales rep and he was very patient. He reviewed details about the car and answered our questions. The other thing I like about CarMax, in general, is that we got pre-approved over the phone 1 day before we picked up our car and we were able to set up our account and upload all insurance information for the new car, prior to our appointment. All I can say is "wow" and thank you. I'll buy my next vehicle from CarMax, for sure. read more

***BEWARE*** Went to look at a 2022 Tacoma 4x4. Crawled underneath the truck & saw ROAD SALT RESIDUE all over the underbody. Same residue under the hood, on the engine block, door jambs...everywhere! Carmax is trying to "pull a fast-one" on CA buyers (who don't know what road salts are...). The vehicle was a previous "fleet" vehicle (probably from Minnesota or Oklahoma - or somewhere that heavily salt their road ways). Needless to say, I PASSED on that one! You should too! read more

I assisted my Mom with selling her car today, as she no longer feels comfortable driving. We had a valuation from CarMax via Edmunds and made an appointment with CarMax. We checked in with our offer code of $5,000 and were assigned to John P. For the appraisal process. John did the inspection, took photos and notes and hands it off to an internal person that does the final offer valuation. I thought they were going to negotiate us down as it was a 20-year-old car although it only has 60,000 mi and is very clean. John did not control the final value but he was certainly a pleasure to work with the whole time, very knowledgeable about cars, shared what he found during the inspection process. The offer came back equaling the $5,000 from Edmonds on the initial preliminary value. CarMax doesn't keep the car, it was purchased today by them but it gets auctioned off to a dealer auction online. This was the highest offer I had including private parties that had offered me much less and carvana came in at $4,200. We were treated very fairly, and John was a pleasure to work with as well as his manager Matt. I highly recommend CarMax, at least from this aspect of selling a car. read more

It's great that they hold vehicles because it takes days to get an appointment. Even with an appointment, it took over two and a half hours to get through some of the paperwork. I had to return the next day to finalize the paperwork and jump through the payment loopholes. I wasn't thinking when they gave me the key to the vehicle. My boss asked me where the second key was. Carmax people did not mention that there was only one key. That's important these days when keys cost hundreds of dollars (FOBs). The salespeople don't seem to be well versed on dealer warranties and want to push their own coverage. I'm happy with the vehicle, not so much worth the experience and time spent and lack of information. read more

BEWARE! Went to this carmax and got an offer on a car for 1800. They told me I would need a lien release from the credit union I had previously financed the vehicle with despite it being paid off and me having the title in hand. Isaiah (sales associate) told me they would contact the credit union and get it sorted out by the following Monday. I heard nothing back and when you try to call the store you get routed to a corporate call center that can't get in touch with anyone at the location. Finally on Tuesday I spoke to someone who then told me that I would need to get a lien release from the credit union myself. Obviously this process took me past the 7 day offer expiry and when I then came in with the lien release they offered me 1600 and refused to honor the original 1800 offer. Bad customer service. Unfair treatment. I would never do business with carmax again. If you want to be well taken care of, then go elsewhere. read more
