In December I purchased a Ford F 150. The NEXT Day after purchase I took it to a third party mechanic for a once over. I was assured by Carmax that they conducted a detailed and extremely thorough and comprehensive inspection and it passed all Carmax requirements. He said I needed a new battery. I further discovered the rear view mirror was loose and wobbling as I drove, on further inspection I found securing tabs on the front floor mats missing, I discovered the driver side rear portion of the truck had collision damage the bumper was loose and the plastic molding that covers the bumper separating and cracked on the driver side, and looking closely found dents and a very rough surface where the bumper joins the body. It appeared as though the rear had been hit or backed into something causing a dent and the body shop did a poor job fixing it. The actual bumper itself was loose and not secure on the driver side. I immediately called Carmax and made them aware of the several issues I discovered in the light of day.
They replaced the battery, the rear view mirror, new floor mats, new bumper and attempted to fix the body damage. Several days later I picked up the truck. There was over spray on the molding where they tried to fix the body damage, they put the bumper on wrong and it was even more crooked than when I brought it in. Than few weeks later the truck started loosing power on acceleration. I took the truck back to Carmax to fix the bumper, over spray, and the mechanical issues. I was told it needed a new rear differential and would be fixed in about 1 week. A week later I was told they forgot to order the rear differential and had to order another one. Two weeks later I was told they instsalled the rear differential but wanted Ford to check their work. Two weeks later Ford said they had to redo Carmax's work and now they discovered metal chips in the trucks inner workings and they would need to order ANOTHER rear differential and they were still waiting for carmax to authorize the repair of the loss of acceleration. At this point we owned the truck for about 8 weeks and it had been in the shop for 6 weeks !! And to think this truck passed Carmax's inspecton process !?
I contacted Carmax and requested they buy the truck back, which they did and made my one truck payment. The Service Manager was the only somewhat helpful manager at Carmax. And it wasnt until I got corporate involved that Irvine Carmax became helpful in resolving my issues early on in the described situation.
The Service Manager asked me to give Carmax another shot at my business by purchasing another truck through them and promised it would go smoothly. I agreed, I found another truck the next day after selling back the other one. The truck was in Arizona and would need to be shipped to Irvine. Due to the endless issues of the first purchase I asked her to throw in a 1 year warranty or some free oil changes/details. She refused to give me anything for all the trouble and inconvienence i experienced with my first purchase. The only thing she offered was a free 90.00 transfer fee for the new truck. She said Carmax buying back the original truck was good enough to satisfy their customer service expectations. HHHMMM they sell me a lemon and I have to deal with 2 months of a car repair headache and they compensate me by buying the truck back wow lucky me thanks.
Anyway, I bought the Arizona truck which came with only 1 remote key and was dirty inside and smelled like smoke. I tried to call the Service Manager several times the one who promised great customer service if i purchased another truck from Carmax; however, she never returned my calls. We got ahold of the salesman who contacted the sales manager. He told us to contact the service manager. We said we have been trying without success. My wife was finally able to get in touch with the service manager after she failed to return my phone calls. She told my wife when they sell a car they try to wipe down the inside; however, little to no caring about the smoker smell and as far as just one remote key,, basically to bad for us. She told my wife they gave us a valet key which equals two keys and if we wanted one with the remote thats on us. She did offer to call their vendor to see if we could get a remote key at cost;;; a week later still waiting for that call from her... I regrete giving them another chance.
Some take aways from a repeat customer (other than how foolish i have been to give them repeat business)::
Dont trust the BS pre sale inspection process.
Dont let them do anything mechanically to your car,
Dont buy the extended warranty, it covers nothing
If you buy from Carmax, do so in the daytime and go over the car with a finetooth comb and take it to a third party mechanic.
It is a TYPICAL used car lot everything you invision a used car lot to be Carmax is all that and more. read more
