I've purchased two previous used cars at other CarMax locations and have been happy with both the experience and the cars I've purchased. After putting over 200K miles on my current vehicle I decided it was time for a new one. Online, I found two I liked, one at a Honda dealership and the other at CarMax. The dealership option had more miles than I'd like so I went to CarMax first. My CarMax option was at the car lot in Duarte, but they shipped it to my nearby Irvine location at no fee so that I could look it over and test drive it. I met Byron at an appointed time, test drove it, asked a bunch of questions, and inspected it thoroughly. I liked it even better in person than what I saw online and made the purchase. Byron made the buying experience quick, easy, pressure-free, and made me feel comfortable - he's great at his job! I love my car. read more

CarMax Irvine was a useful place to see and try different makes and models of cars. However, they will NEVER see a dime from me or anyone I can spread the word to because of the rude and sexist sales person we dealt with the first time we went in. We had an appointment to browse, and were assigned to Mahanth Kommireddy. When he came up to us, he shook my hand, introduced himself to me, AND THEN COMPLETELY IGNORED MY WIFE. We almost walked out right there, but wanted to test drive a car so we bit our tongues. Even once we went to his desk, he still did not acknowledge her at all. If this is how he treats wives of potential customers, I'm sure this isn't the first and won't be the last time he cost you business. I ended up doing the whole sit through the dealer nightmare that you guys are supposed to be a better alternative to because I refuse to reward such awful behavior. read more

Came here after the finance team at Camax Buena Park decided they didn't want my business! Thankfully Byron and the management team here took incredible care of me, they helped me get out of my old car and into a Tesla Model 3! Very happy with the service I received, the manager was incredible and understanding of my situation, the business center team stayed late to help me get things situated with transfer of titles and registrations. All around an incredible experience. I can't say enough great things about Byron though that guy was a rock star and excellent at customer service. I'll be coming back! read more

Came into Irvine for an offer with JT and sold a week later with Erica. One of the highest offers and truly an easy experience. Equity draft handed over same day and doc signing took maybe 15 minutes. Roughly 45 min was waiting. Was bittersweet selling my beloved M340 to Carmax but I hope it finds an amazing home and thanks to Erica for helping me take a farewell photo. Although I do wish they would've sent me in a Uber/Lyft to the bank. Truly cheap of Carmax management to say no... Like I can only go home or work? Come on, I just sold you my transportation. It's 1 mile up the road. -2 stars just for that. read more

I just traded in a Jetta 2016 and got a Taos 2024. The customer service is pretty good. Gus and Ivan all the people who helped me are great. Unfortunately after spending 5 hours securing the deal and finishing the paperwork. Gus called me 3 days after the paperwork was completed to tell me his manager deleted it. Unfortunately, this caused a disruption of my time and respect. It's hard to fathom that a manager would want to cause themselves or their employees more issues with sales and reputation. Whoever the morning manager was on Tuesday September 22nd. They would need more training because communication is a skill learned and if a manager can't communicate with their team then they have bigger issues than just customer service. Would give the employees 5 stars if I could read more

I just sold a car to them and the entire process went very smoothly. I was in and out in 2hrs with a check in hand. Communication style could be improved but my experience was flawless. I did not have any complications in my transaction which is what I attribute to the good experience. read more

So here I am as a Passenger on a Test Drive. 2018 Audi for 18,000 but as you may know, each day is different cars different offers. Just for you shall be a lot longer as the day progresses will either be still on a lookout for a car or filling out the sales purchasing paperwork for this car ! There was multiple issues during the test drive. Not sure what I should post video wise. read more

Went in on 7/29/26. They offered me $40k. 28 days later I went in and they dropped Price by 10%. I know the original price was only protected for 7 days. Only added 250 miles between the offers. Carmax uses an algorithm that seriously diminishes the car value on the second offer. Which compromises the integrity of their business model. Go to Carvana. Higher integrity. They offer top dollar. read more

I bought this X1 2018 bmw less than a year ago maybe six months ago I already need a new battery and I noticed that the front headlight the plastic that covers it just on the right side is all dull and doesn't get clean. Looks defective. How can you sell me a car when I already need a new battery there should've been a new battery in there. I will not recommend Carmax again, very disappointed in the quality of the car that you sold me. read more

Don't buy cars here. I bought a 22 army green Tacoma thinking it was in excellent condition and turns out they scammed me. I was never told that if I don't take off the roof wrap that the entire roof would rust. That basically said it's my problem! read more

What a great experience we had with Raymond!! We purchased a 2016 Nissan Frontier today and we are pleased with everything. No Haggle pricing, and a painless experience. In and out in about 90 minutes. They have plenty of inventory to help you make a decision. This is our second vehicle purchased from Car Max. If you need a used car or truck please look at Car Mar first!! read more

I was trying to sell a 16 year old car that nobody seemed excited to buy. CarMax was my last resort and I didn't expect much to be honest. They're a big company and I thought they would nickel and dime me to death. Turns out they offered me $3500 MORE than I expected. I couldn't believe it. The paperwork took awhile, but we were dealing deceased car owners, death certificates, trustees, etc. so that's to be expected. Afterwards, they ordered Lyft to take me home and they even paid for it. Just wow! read more

Another great experience. But this time, at the service department. Marcos (Service Consultant) and Ian (Service Manager) were so patient with me and my car. Brought my car for a check up on the brakes. They took the car in, no hassle (Still under warranty). Very honest people from what I experienced. They fixed up the car, plus other issues that were just popping up. The auto technician working on my car was great, very knowledgeable and helpful as he fixed future possible issues. This carmax is definitely a 5 stars, sales and service department. Great customer service, great service department, awesome location. Thank you guys again for everything! read more

I visited many places and was given different offers, but when I went to CarMax, and I had heard that CarMax usually offers good prices for cars. They gave me a low offer. In the end, I decided to keep the car read more

They don't treat walk-ins well, if you're a walk-in like I was they will limit you to TWO test drives on your visit even if you're actually looking to buy a car. The front desk is incredibly unhelpful and only exist to shoo walk-ins away. Our salesperson Mahanth was incredibly unprofessional, and being young doesn't excuse it. Extremely rude, ignored my wife and only tried to talk to me when it was going to be her car. I don't normally leave reviews but this place definitely tries to skate on by and do the bare minimum to sell you an overpriced used car. I already found a newer model of the car we liked for much cheaper elsewhere. If I could give a ZERO I would. read more

Offered me way below what my car was worth wasted my time and they quoted me way higher online

I recommend this CarMax but absolutely would advise to not work with Rafid. Extremely dishonest, unprofessional, & hard to work with. Sold me a car that had a coolant leak & told me I could trade it in for another car with no difference needed to be paid. He then proceeded to tell me I had to pay nearly $1,000 for the difference after I signed the other car over, completely f***** me. He's is extremely disrespectful and solely cares about the sale and not the client. DO NOT GO WITH RAFID! read more

My first purchase occurred four years ago, and I am still driving and enjoying that car. When my girlfriend needed a replacement car for her damaged Lexus, CarMax was the immediate choice. CarMax employs low pressure sales pros who do a skillful job of explaining, showing, demonstrating, and of course, selling quality used cars. Today we compared a Lexus UX to a Lexus ES and my girlfriend made her choice. We were able to drive and compare the automobiles at our own pace, and with zero sales pressure. When my girlfriend made the choice, and financing was needed to complete the deal, another non pressured offer was presented for consideration. All in all, from start to finish, the day was fruitful, and resulted in the purchase of a fine small car that will serve our transportation needs for the foreseeable future. The experience was quite pleasant and devoid of the tricks, games, and shenanigans we always have experienced at new car dealerships. Our sales representative was ELIJAH. We returned a week later to obtain new tires for this newly purchased car, and were treated well by the service advisor named Jose. The tires were installed and the car runs more smoothly. Very happy with the purchase. read more

Grand Theft Auto! Do not sell your car to these thieves. They offered me $19,000 dollars less than what I got on trade at a much better dealer. $19,000 dollars is a huge difference. Carvanna also offered me higher than Car Max. Don't sell to them! read more

Avoid, their service team completely overlooked a crack in the display. They refused to fix it after I discovered it.

Just bought my second car from this location. Fair warning, CHECK THE CAR IN THE DAYLIGHT!! The pictures showed one blemish, there were over 10 pings and dents they could have shown. I asked if it had been in any accidents and they said there was a claim filed on the insurance, but there was no frame damage. The repair was apparent the next day in the light....... The drivers side door was obviously repaired and kind of a so-so job at best (you can see the waves in the door). Of course this was NOT shown in the initial pictures. The car drives great and is only for my A to B driving needs and is lower miles than the others I could afford, so I kept it. I would still shop here, but if you're buying for looks, inspect thoroughly in the daytime. They could be a little more straight forward and just say it was repaired. read more

We stopped by Carmax to look at their SUVs from LandRover to Jeep. The place was packed and looked like the DMV. I asked Emily, the staff member who checked us in, if they were giving something away. She laughed and said there was a wait to speak to a salesperson. That is unusual at a car dealership, but they were booming. We gave Emily our name and phone number and walked the lot. There wasn't anything spectacular about their pricing as it was in alignment with Edmonds, Bluebook, and industry market pricing, but the place was very popular. Their vehicle inventory is very clean, vast in selection, and plentiful. We saw quite a few vehicles we would have taken for a test drive and maybe even sat down to talk numbers, but the wait was just too much. We decided to go elsewhere and then to lunch. Highly recommended read more

A Truly Exceptional Experience Thanks to Kwesi C.! I have to give the highest praise to Kwesi C., easily one of the best car salesmen I've ever worked with. From the moment I walked into CarMax without an appointment, he greeted me with genuine warmth and excitement. He immediately stepped in to help, quickly had the car I wanted brought around for a test drive, and was just as enthusiastic about the process as I was. Kwesi went above and beyond to make the entire buying experience seamless. He walked me through every step of the paperwork with patience and clarity, ensuring I felt confident and taken care of. He was determined to get everything handled smoothly so I could enjoy my new car as soon as possible. Because I didn't have all my finances with me on the first visit, I returned the next day--yet Kwesi treated me with the same level of excitement and professionalism. He greeted me at the door, stayed with me through the final steps, and worked closely with the service team, who were also incredibly friendly and helpful. The moment I picked up my car was unforgettable. Kwesi had everything prepared, set up beautifully with a bow on top. He took photos, celebrated the moment with me, and his enthusiasm was absolutely genuine. He shook my hand multiple times because he was truly happy for me--not just as a customer, but as someone he wanted to see walk away confident and satisfied. If you want an amazing experience at CarMax, I highly recommend asking for Kwesi C. He made the entire process smooth, enjoyable, and memorable. This is customer service at its finest. read more

Make sure you use car fax here. They use another company similar to CARFAX but they do not record to the level of carfax does. Typical shady business practices like saying a car was never smoked in, or doesn't have any issues but it's apparent that it does on an extended test drive. I Was going to get a "beater" for my kids first car here and their car history check showed everything was spotless but when I ran it my self the car had been in a bad front end collision. I asked them about it and mention the alignment was a little wonky. After showing them the evidence of a bad crash they were not willing to budge on the price (I was not going to purchase just wanted to see how shady they were). We test drove 4 cars. 2 had non matching records to carfax. Two were smoked in and it was very apparent during the test drive despite them telling us non of them had. I was looking at a certain price range and understand that I was not going to get something fancy but hiding operational and other issues is bad business. Out of the 4 cars, two were smoked in (they said they weren't), two had reported crashes that their check didn't see and both of the previously crashed cars had alignment issues when driving down a flat straight street they would pull pretty hard to the left or right. One of the cars had a lot of abnormal valvetrain noise at mid to higher rpm which also indicates mechanical issues. read more

Awful lazy customer service with zero assistance given and disrespectful staff. No help unless you want to finance through them. Disgusting staff at this location, don't go there. I asked a bald man compensating with a beard and another bald man in a Carmax hat for help with locating a certain car and they directed me to my phone- the car max app- instead of the many available computers. There is no one I trust more for dealing with my Ram 1500 than service writer Louis A. at Carmax Irvine. He was my go to guy when he was at the Costa Mesa location. I purchased my favorite car in this location just last Saturday, March 22, 2025. The staffs are amazing and everything went very smoothly. John Khalil helped me with the most of the process. His colleague Rafid helped me as well. John is very patient and knowledgeable. I kept texting him asking questions about the car even three days after the purchase and he quickly and super friendly replied back to me with the most helpful solution. It was my first experience with CarMax and I loved it. The idea of ornamenting the car with the Ribbon after finalizing the purchase was so cute. I didn't expect it. I'd like to thank all the staffs :) read more

I know some people had a bad experience, but my over all experience was great. We came in a Saturday afternoon to get our car appraised and got helped right away and didn't wait for too long; in and out within 45 mins and got the appraisal that was validate for 7 days if you decided selling your car. We came back to sell our car and the process was quick and easy. Make sure to bring your pink slip, ID and the appraisal slip when you come back and the process was fast, only took us about 30 mins. They gave us a good price for our car too which I was shocked although my car was in good condition but they didn't low ball us too much. Good thing is none of them were pushy to convince us to sell or buy any car here. If you want to just check out cars in the lot and get ideas of what you like to buy; this is a good place to go too! read more

Want the best cash trade-in value? With no hassles, haggling, or negotiating? Then CarMax in Irvine provides just that. My story! One month till my lease is up on a Sonata PlugIn Hybrid. I would have to pay $400 at the end of the lease term. Instead CarMax's on-line used car evaluation provided me with a VERY sweet trade-in value much more than what was owed. Went to the store in Irvine off Bake. Very friendly, helpful, & knowledgeable staff. Once the evaluation was confirmed, it took 2 days to complete the trade-in & get a sizable bank draft that cleared in 5 business days. This is my second experience using CarMax for a trade-in. It was another 5-Star ***** experience. Thank you CarMax for being highly professional in an industry that gets a bad rap. Happy Trade-in & Fight On!! read more
