Paid $99 to have a 2025 Range Rover sport shipped to the Irvine location. Loved the car but noticed significant paint cover up on the front bumper but the report carmax showed said no accidents. Thankfully they offered me with a 800+ credit score ridiculously high rates in the 7's so didnt buy it and went home to shore up financing. I decided to ask my budy who works at a dealership to check the carfax because of the paint cover up and scratches and it in fact WAS in an accident. BEWARE they use Autocheck not Carfax to hide reported accidents. On top of that my buddy said my market trade in for my car was $24k and they offered me $14k. I recently bought a car from CarMax in June 2024. The car started to burn oil after the 10 days return policy they had. After that it has been having consistent burning oil where I had to pour more oil every 2 weeks. I shouldn't have to be doing it if the car was a 2019. About 1 month into the car, it was making a knocking rattling noise that became more consistent when you hit the gas peddle. I took the car in for an oil change x2 at my own mechanic shop and every time they did the oil change, my dip stick was not reading oil or didn't have oil on it. Keep in mind I only had this car for 3-4 months. I called CarMax beginning of September due to the problems still happening. They basically turned me away and told me to go to the dealership. Super super poor customer service. I spoke to the Service Department manager I believe his name was Rick and he was super rude about it. I would avoid coming to this Carmax location. If you want Poor Customer Service definitely come to this location. If you want a car that will start having problems after the 10 days return policy then come to this location. read more

I had such a wonderful experience purchasing my dream car a 2016 SLK 300 with only 40k miles, at carmax. I have been wanting an SLK since I was a little girl, however I had a hard time finding one within budget and that was from a reliable dealership. I had terrible experiences with other used dealerships and even carvana, so I was beginning to give up until I came to carmax. The process started online when I held the car for my appointment, I walked in at my appointment time and within 10min I was helped by frank who was an absolute pleasure. Frank was even nice enough to place a bow on the car for me since it was my birthday gift to myself, my dream car. Overall I had the best buying experience I could ask for thanks to him. He was attentive to my needs and listened to all my concerns and questions, they even sent my car out to a Mercedes mechanic to double check and ensure that there was no issue, meanwhile this entire time Marvin was great with communicating every step that was being taken. Shortly after I had my dream car back in my hands in perfect condition and no worries. I was so pleased with my overall experience that I recommended carmax to my friend and she ended up making her vehicle purchase through the Costa Mesa location as it was closest to her, however she then took her car into Irvine when she had service concerns and Jose welcomed her with open arms and took care of her concerns as well. I have bought cars from other CarMax locations and had a great experience, but working with the staff at Irvine was very disappointing. I was never informed of the 24 hr test drive option, and the car that I ended up buying had something wrong with it as soon as I drove it off of the lot. There was a loud clicking sound that started about 90 seconds after turning the vehicle on and then when I turned it off. If I had known about the overnight test drive option, I would have done that and saved myself a lot of trouble. The car that I purchased was a hybrid and the salesman told me that the extended warranty covered "all hardware and software on the vehicle". I found out after the fact that the warranty actually didn't cover the hybrid battery at all. I bought the car knowing it had an incomplete key fob and some cosmetic damage to the inside door panel. The service department called me the next day after taking the car home to make an appointment to look at the door panel, and that's when I informed them of the clicking sound. The guy assured me it would be an easy fix, but said I had to wait a week to get an appointment to have it looked at (which would be 7 days into my 10 day return window). The day of the appointment, the service department called to tell me that their computers were down and they couldn't look at the car until it was fixed. They did call me again later that day to tell me that their computers came back partially and they could reschedule me for the following week, which would be AFTER my 10 day return window. I had to argue with the man on the phone for almost 10 minutes before he suddenly found an appointment the next day so that someone could at least diagnose the problem; I would still have to wait for the following week for anyone to try to fix it. When I arrived for my service appointment, there was 1 guy working in the whole department and it took 25 minutes for him to even acknowledge me waiting in line. At that point, I was so frustrated with the whole experience that I decided to return the car. Maybe the clicking sound was an easy fix, but the lack of communication of my options and explanation of the warranty during the buying process and the way the service department kept pushing me off once I had the car made it feel like they were trying to stick me with a defective car. read more

I've been buying cars through carmax for almost 10 years and am disappointed in your company and service. This is probably one of the worst experiences I've ever had trying to buy a car. First off after a week of no communication after the car arrived they tell me the bumper needs to be replaced with no reason why. Then after a week they tell me the rear window needs to be replaced and not ready to test drive. If the rear bumper needs to be replaced and window is cracked it means to me that the car was in an accident of some sort during transfer and both needed to be replaced, because it was for sale, ready to test drive, and ready to purchase in another carmax store in Norco California. Therefore I feel like I've been misled by poor communication and lies of ommission. I wanted to do business with you, but your company has lost its integrity in my eyes. There are some good people who work here, but I just found out that the car I returned to CarMax due to probable engine damage is listed for sale again only one day later. Do NOT buy here. They don't give a crap. An honest company would have taken the time to fully diagnose and correct the damage I reported. Some of these cars are not safe to drive. The check engine light came on again. After getting an inspection from an independent mechanic, they suspected that my used Lexus' engine had internal damage. Unfortunately, this car did not work out for me and after 24 days of ownership, I decided to return it. Some advice for non-mechanic buyers - please have several inspections when purchasing a car from CarMax. My car was inspected 7 times (first in CarMax Murrieta, second was a quality check in CarMax Irvine, third was an inspection from my neighbor mechanic during my 24-hour test drive, fourth was at CarMax Irvine service department after the first CEL light came on, fifth was at a local Lexus dealership, sixth was at CarMax Irvine service department after the dealership discovered an oil leak, seventh was at an Independent mechanic shop after the second CEL light came on). Had I not gone through this process, I could have ended up with a money pit down the road. This car was a 2015 Lexus with 122000 miles. CarFax and AutoCheck reports looked clean. The CarMax 120-point inspection is NOT thorough enough. Do your due diligence and have multiple eyes look at whatever car you are interested in. The silver lining is that CarMax DOES honor the 30-day money back guarantee and they DO cover any repairs you need within the 90-day warranty. Returning a car was quick and easy - shout-out to Vincent and Jeremy for helping me out. And big shout-out to Patrick from the service department for doing his best to accommodate me. read more

Today I brought the same car back and the quote was $14,400. I only visited this location in order to receive a quote for my vehicle. The online appraisal process is never guaranteed so I figure going in person would allow for a better evaluation of the value on my car. The location is very big and can accommodate a good amount of guests, as they have office tables and chairs spread out throughout the main lobby area and additional seating in a waiting area. From start to finish, it took just under an hour to meet with a consultant regarding my appointment, hand off my keys to allow them to test drive, and return back with the consultant to receive my quote. Was it the best price? Not really, but it wasn't atrociously low either. Was it easy? I would say yes, because I didn't have to jump through any hoops to book an appointment and the sales advisor was very direct with letting me know about the car pricing and how long the offer was good for. I didn't bother with haggling because I just wanted to see the ballpark value of my vehicle.
