I had a bit of a "tale of two experiences" at this location. I recently purchased a 2019 Lexus RX 350, and initially, I was ready to give a 5-star review. The sales process was incredibly smooth--no pressure, the paperwork was efficient, and the staff at the Dan Way location were professional and welcoming. However, the "after-care" has been a different story. Shortly after the purchase, a mechanical issue arose that was clearly covered under the 30-day limited warranty. While I expected a quick fix, the service department has made it incredibly difficult to actually get the car in. When there the team could not diagnose the issue and asked to have me return if the issue persists. However; The Challenges: * Scheduling: Trying to get an appointment was a headache. I was told they were "extremely busy" and couldn't see the car for over a week, despite it being a warranty issue on a car they just sold me. * Resolution: While the issue is technically "covered," the hurdle of getting it diagnosed and repaired has turned an "easy" buying experience into a stressful ownership experience. I love the Lexus, but the service side of this CarMax needs a major overhaul in terms of accessibility and customer support. The photos and description didn't have any damage to the vehicle, scratches, dents, etc. I reserved the vehicle, paid $1000 to get it shipped. When it arrived it had major and multiple scratches, dents and the engine had a transmission issue (gears slipping). I don't recommend CarMax. Today, I received a notification online from the DMV that my registration was due, yet it was for the car I had traded in to get the one I bought from this location. I decided to call to make sure everything was fine and there was no issue with someone using my information and spoke to such a fantastic employee, Elyah S. She informed me to not be worried that sometimes this does occur if the car is transferred to another dealership out of state, but she decided to check and make sure. She called me back and let me know that the car was sold to another dealership and that is what originally happened because once a car is out of state, it is no longer managed/ monitored by the CA DMV. Overall, I was so pleased with her information, effort, and willingness to go above and beyond for me even though it had been almost two years since I had even been to this dealership. So I came back a couple weeks later and said I wanted to go ahead and sell it to them at that offer and they said they had to appraise it again, and they made me an offer after that several thousand dollars less than their original offer. My sister bought a car from Carmax in Atlanta, so when I found a car on their website I was happy. My sister had an exellent experience and recommended them to me. I got a Mini Cooper Countryman 2018 in the perfect color I was over the moon. A few days (5) after the car started hesitating when taking off. I called Carmax and got the call center. I was transfer to the service dept. After 2 minutes the phone cut off. I called back. I choose the option that tranfered me to service. I got the answering machine. I left a message. I waited 10 minutes and called back. This time a lady answered the phone. I told her what the problem was and she said they were booked til after the 10th. When I told her I wanted to get it checked before the 10 days was up, she said you can always return the car. After that answer I hung up. I am a veteran with sever PTSD, I was getting upset by this time. Having received no help I called again after an hour. After being transfered to the message machine once I finally talked to someone in the business office X6090. I was transfered to service again. This time I was told I could bring it in on October 1st. That was day 10. When I expressed my need to have it fixed before day 10 I was told it wasn't possible. I returned the car that night. The day after buying my car from CarMax, the check engine light came on. Extremely suspicious!! When I called CarMax to report this and schedule an inspection, I was given the complete runaround. They were not able to get me into the Kearny Mesa service location (Which was the location closest to me) and told me to drive all the way back to Escondido for the inspection--with the check engine light on. Completely unacceptable. I scheduled the Escondido appointment at their earliest available appointment which was 2 days later because I had no choice. The sales manager suggested that I take my car to AutoZone for a diagnostic in the meantime which I did. The issue was a PCV performance problem--a well-documented issue with these Mercedes vehicles. I informed CarMax about this diagnosis, and they said that I would still need to come in to get the car inspected and there was no way of telling if they would have the necessary parts to fix the issue the same day. The fact that this happened the day after purchase makes me strongly believe the check engine light was reset before the sale. Of course, I can't prove it, but everything about this situation feels shady. They never addressed my concern on this at all. I found out after doing some research that Mercedes had an extended warranty for this issue. So I took the car to a Mercedes dealership near me (not back to CarMax, because I no longer trusted them). They were not only able to get me in for an appointment the next morning, they fixed it immediately at no cost to me. CarMax should take notes on what real customer service looks like. And if that wasn't enough, here's more: When I purchased the car, they promised to provide a missing tire inflation kit and said they'd call when it came in. That call never happened. When I called to follow up, the service rep told me their system showed I already picked it up--which I DID NOT. I reiterated to her that "No, this is not correct, I did not pick it up", her response to me was "I'm sorry, there's nothing we can do, it shows you already picked it up". And when I asked for a manager or escalation, I was told, "There's no one I can escalate you to." Absolutely unbelievable. I had to call the sales manager myself to get it resolved, and while she addressed my concerns and reordered the part for me (which I won't hold my breath on until it's in hand), I'm still furious that I had to jump through hoops for something that should have been so simple. The only decent part of my entire experience with CarMax was the initial sales process (Of course because they wanted to sell me a car). Everything after that has been a nightmare--full of excuses, lack of accountability, and terrible customer service. If you take advantage of the options CarMax offers online before you make an appointment to go in, it could literally not be easier to find and get a car. I scoured the website and app for a few weeks until I found the car I wanted, I liked that when you make an account and use their Pre-Qualification tool you can browse for cars in your exact budget. Once I found the car, I called CarMax directly to reserve the car and make an appointment to test drive it. Arturo from the Call Center was SO courteous, patient, and helpful in assisting me. He helped me navigate reserving the car I wanted, we set an appointment to come see the car in person, and Arturo offered to go over the Pre-Qualification in more detail on the same phone call. Because I needed my husband present as we both would be financing the car, Arturo gave me a number to text when we were ready to go over everything all together. I was able to text him when it was a good time, he called us, and within roughly 20 minutes we were Pre-Qualified and had two offers from different lenders. We let him know which one we wanted, and he had everything prepped and ready for our appointment later in the week. IF YOU USE THIS METHOD, AND YOU LIKE THE CAR YOU GO TO TEAT DRIVE, YOU WILL LITERALLY BE IN AND OUT OF THERE IN AN HOUR AND A HALF! We checked in at 10:00 this morning, they were aware of our appointment, and Percy took great care of us. We went over the preliminary information, Percy was fantastic at explaining things clearly and answering our questions, and then we test drove the car. We fell in love with it, and drove it back to the lot for paperwork. Because you need insurance to drive the car off the lot after purchasing, make sure you either have it ready or do what I did and get a price quote a few days before, select an insurance, build an account with them, and then most of their apps or websites will save your info and make it a few clicks away to purchase the day of. I had the insurance set up within five minutes, we put our down payment down, we signed the paperwork, and then they escort you to their own DMV paperwork area. Daneen was so friendly and kind, she explained what we were signing so nicely and clearly. Because I'm neurodivergent, I can't emphasize enough how appreciated it was to have everyone here achieve that perfect balance of explaining things to me clearly and efficiently, while not rushing through it or fast talking me. We completed our DMV paperwork within five minutes, and finally Percy walked us out to our new car, handed us our keys, and we were off! I am not joking when I say we were literally in at 10:00 and out before 12:30. Compared to my last experience I had at a dealership (where it was an 8 hour day spent there, I was fast talked and upsold on the biggest lemon that would bring me years of grief), this was the EASIEST experience ever. I've had longer and more difficult grocery shopping trips, I don't think I could get out of Costco in under two hours let alone buy a car. What I appreciated the most is that Percy took the time to make sure we understood everything, he ensured we knew all the things that our CareMax and warranties took care of, and finally- Percy told us that this wasn't the end of our relationship, this was the start of it. I cannot tell you how nice it was to hear that they are here to help me if I ever need them for maintenance or repairs or anything at all. THE GOOD: CARMAX as a whole is build on overcharging for vehicles and adding high APRs to make money. But THIS LOCATION is definitely hit or miss with customer service. Wendy and the service team is AMAZING! I bout a 2020 Camaro 2SS from Carmax and have had nothing but issues with it, but her and her team have went above and beyond to get it fixed but nobody can seem to figure it out. THE BAD: Was thinking of trading in my SUV so i took it in to get appraised just on a spare of the moment type of deal. The first lady was nice but then she passed my keys to a guy named "Tony" who clearly is more passionate about working out than Customer service. He pointed out some cosmetic flaws which i was ok with. But one saying "bumper replacement" which from the look of there lot is far from what they do but the biggest scam is saying the 6.2L had a engine noise! When i know couldn't be accurately assessed. So i told them show me, we walked outside, turned it on and no tick. He begins to lie saying he heard it and doesn't know why its not making it now. He then says the (non existent) engine noise is not the big issue, which is the complete opposite of what the lady inside told me. This place is a scam! Stay away and just go to an actual dealership. CARMAX approves dang near ANYONE so they get away with taking advantage of most people cause they NEED a vehicle or the money. But i highly suggest looking elsewhere. P.S. my Camaro is a limited "shock green" color. When i bought the car the front bumper had major SCRATCHES and paint missing along with the original PPF damaged. Was waiting on posting a review for patient reasoning and seeing if they would make things right. I purchased a vehicle in nov of last year and it's been in and out of their service department multiple times as well as multiple locations. All with the same out come "there is nothing wrong with it." I'm a tech at another dealership and have the same access as they do but I can clearly see everything that's wrong. What to look for. HOW TO TEST IT and document it to no avail. I bought this for a reliable daily not a projI have even brought it up to the "service manager" and corporate at this point all with the same outcomes. They said that if they find something wrong it, it will be through warranty and I'd have to pay the deductible even though these complaints where filled on paper within the 90 day/4k warranty. Now I sent my vehicle to Ford and they have noticed MANY things wrong with it with a bill north of 1600.00 worth of work to be done. (Did I mention I bought this car 5 months ago and it's been in the shop 3 weeks straight and out of the 5 months probably 2 months worth of that time in shops.) oh and warranty will only cover about 400.00 worth! So what's the point of even having the warranty!! It sucks because I have bought Multiple vehicles from Carmax and this is the worst experience I've had by far! Stay away from them. The first experience we had with this location was two months ago when we looked at /test drove a vehicle. Yes, it's a used vehicle; however, the vehicle's exterior contained far more scratches/damage than what was pictured on their website. After inspecting the engine, I noted that there appeared to be an oil leak from the head gasket. This vehicle model has a history of high oil consumption and ruptured head gaskets if scheduled maintenance isn't adhered to. I wiped the area with a napkin I had and it immediately became saturated with oil. I asked the salesperson about the leak and she proceeded to say it either was an old leak that was fixed by the owner or the CarMax mechanics just fixed it as part of their 125-point inspection process. She then reiterated that she wasn't sure. We decided to pass on the vehicle as the engine history was not noted on the CarFax or the CarMax Auto Check feature on their website. The first week in October, we located another vehicle in the Los Angeles area. The vehicle was shipped to this location and we were notified this past Friday morning that it was ready. Due to the short notice and our weekend already being booked, we opted to schedule a test drive Saturday at the latest evening appointment slot via their website. The morning of the appointment, I received a call stating that the appointment had to be rescheduled as test drives end 30-minutes prior to closing at 9pm. I, along with the representative, agree upon an appointment that was 30-minutes earlier than the first one. Three hours prior to the appointment, I receive a call from a "sales manager" who stated that he's all done with appointments for the day and asked if we could come in earlier as he's free. I explained that we can't due to prior commitments. He then proceeded to again state that he had no more appointments and that we were the last ones. He explained that our test drive would be cut short and that if we decided to purchase the vehicle, that all necessary paperwork would have to be completed prior to them closing at 9pm. I said ok, that's no problem. We arrived 30-minutes ahead of our appointment time and proceeded to test drive the vehicle for an imposed 15-minute time limit. At the completion, we noted that there was again additional damage to the vehicle not shown on the website pictures. This included a broken windshield molding and a deep gash in the rear bumper. The sales representative stated that the pictures on the website aren't current and that the damages may have been covered with touch up paint and not easily seen in the pictures. At that time, we then noted a similar vehicle that was recently available and we asked if we could schedule a test drive the following morning. The sales representative and sales manager both agreed that it was no problem since it was close to closing time and scheduled us in for the next morning. The following morning, Sunday, we test drove the other vehicle; this time with an imposed 20-minute time-limit. Upon reversing out of the parking spot, we immediately heard a clicking sound coming from the front driver's side CV joint. A look on CarFax noted that the vehicle had been in an accident and sustained damage to the passenger side and rear. The repair to the rear was visible in the spare tire area as the body panel seam caulking was a bright white in comparison to the painted over OEM caulking. There was nothing of note regarding a CV joint repair. This was a 3-year old vehicle with 19,000 miles on the odometer, well within the 100,000 mile lifespan of a CV joint. We reported to the issue to the salesperson and he said that it had gone through their 125-point inspection and there should not be an issue. He proceeded to drive the vehicle and he immediately agreed that there was something broken/damaged with the CV joint. We then asked if we could see the vehicle that we had test drove the previous night. He agreed and walked us out to it. We inspected it in the morning light and asked if we could test drive it one last time before we make our decision. He immediately stated that it was not up to him and that he would have to ask his sales manager. Approximately two minutes later, the salesperson came back and stated that the sales manager said that per CarMax policy, you are only allowed one test drive per vehicle and that we cannot test drive it again. The salesperson asked us what we wanted to do. We said thank you and we walked off the lot. A quick look at the test drive policy on the CarMax website turned up no such policy. Their bid was much better than the local dealerships and well within what I expected looking at similar cars on AutoTrader. I came in without an appointment. Granted they were not busy on a Monday afternoon, but the service was terrific. I was in and out with my check in hand in about an hour. The staff were knowledgeable about their roles, were courteous, answered all my questions, and were very helpful. I'm giving 5 stars because of our experience with Charlie. We test drove several cars at both the Oceanside and Esco locations and although there were some quirky things with their policies Charlie really took care of us- never feeling rushed or pressured. We left and came back several times. Looked at several cars and finally my daughter bought a car. Honestly I'm not sure I would be giving a 5 star review had we not worked with him. Took in my automatic 2004 Mazda 3 type S hatchback with 187k miles in for an appraisal on 9/29/21. The only things that were wrong with my car were the clear coat peeling on hood and roof, a dent the size of a palm in the rear right bumper, and TPMS light blinking. Took about an hour and ended up with an appraisal offer of $1,200. The offer was too low, considering that used cars are in high demand. I have used this Carmax location 2x over the last 7 years and both times they gave me good deals on my car (not low blue book and not high blue book, just right in the middle but 3-4 times more than dealers were offering. 7 years ago when I first used them they had a better system and were faster. With Covid they are doing things differently and the process is excruciatingly slow. I went in on Wednesday without an appointment and it took 10 minutes or so to find someone to help me. He advised someone would have to do the walkaround inspection of my car but did not advise it could take 20-30 minutes or longer. It took about 20 - 25 minutes and I was lucky, without an appointment to get someone that quickly. The person who did the walk around of my car, was nice, professional and only took 10 minutes or so and said to be patient while they worked up my quote but it would take some time. I waited about 25 or 30 minutes before checking in to see if they missed me since there is no system to let you know your quote is ready and if you are not in the salesperson's line of sight, they don't go looking for you and don't know where you are in the building or lot (Bad Process). The salesperson said no not ready yet, it is taking 60-90 minutes. I wish I had been told that up front. He did advise I had 2 people in front of me and to stay nearby and he would find me. About 15 minutes later (about 90 minutes total) I finally got my quote. At least it was a good mid blue book quote and better than the dealer and worth my time and effort. Saturday I made an appointment to have them do the start the car final inspection and sell it to them. Got there and they said it was busy and would take 60-90 minutes to do the final inspection and paperwork and get me a check. They said don't wander to far off because when they call me if I am not there in front of them in 5 minutes then will skip me and go to the next person. I wandered off for about 45 minutes. I went to the business office to ask a question and the woman said, oh, you are next, don't go to far away. All in all it took about 1 hour 15 minutes with an appointment but I got the car sold to Carmax and got my check. So again it was worth it. read more

I bought a Tundra from them, only to find out they didn't disclose all the accidents the truck had been in. Found out when I tried to trade it in using the car buying service through CalCoastCU. They loaned money for the truck on incomplete documentation from CarMax. I'm waiting to hear from a loan officer to see if they want to get involved. I'm not letting this go. We made an appointment for 12:30 and we're told that the sales people were all busy but they would get to us as soon as they could. 45 minutes later we're still sitting there. I guess it would be worth it if the prices were cheaper than at dealerships, but we're seeing comparable vehicles at dealerships for the same price. If not better. And with a dealer we can at least haggle. So disappointed with my first and only experience at carmax. read more

Car buying was easy and I would have given 5 stars but I felt the salesperson was sexist. Even though it was I who wrote the check which only had my name on it for the purchase and I used my credit card for the warranty, they put my husband's name as the primary buyer apparently just because he accompanied me to my appointment and wanted to test drive the vehicle too. As we walked out, the salesperson said Congratulations David. What? Was I invisible? Then a day later, Although both of our email addresses were given, they only sent email to my husband thanking him for his visit. Someone needs to let them know women buy cars too! read more
