The owner will appear to be nice and friendly - until he's not (angrily cursed at me over the phone, even called my mother a profanity to me over the phone). Oh wow, I can't believe I haven't left a review for Carlsbad Solar yet! After interviewing several companies regarding solar including looking at leases v. buying a system, we chose Justin and Carlsbad Solar to do our solar system install. We put our system in back at the end of 2018 and it's been doing great. Justin calculated how big of a system we needed (with a little wiggle room) and we've been covered every year. I was looking to get a solar system to offset my electric bill and my friend Maureen T. (see her review here too) recommended Justin and Carlsbad Solar. Justin and his crew installed the panels in such a way that they're only barely visible from the edge, and only from the yard. He hid the conduit and the inverter in such a way that it doesn't even appear there's a solar system installed -- except by looking at the meter, which a month after the installation, is so far running a net negative. His crew also fixed some small roof leaks at no extra charge. The job got done on time and as quoted, too. Justin knows all the ins & outs of the HERO program, SDG&E's net metering programs, and tax credits. He's also a general contractor and I hired him to advise on some other improvements I had in mind. Got my annual SDG&E bill a year after Carlsbad Solar's installation....$29! This really is a testament to Carlsbad Solar's research and accuracy. They said the system they designed would effectively negate my bill and they were pretty much right on. Amazing! Plus, I know I'm probably less concerned with my energy use now that I make my own. I still see new installations with conduit running all over their roof and down the outsides of their house. Why do people settle for ugly pipes all over their beautiful homes? In August, when I received a warning notice from SDG&E that my electricity bill was going to be more than I was willing to pay, I turned my AC off and began to look into solar for a second time. In the past three years I found trying to make a solar decision overwhelming. I've had other estimates and other companies here. I'm a senior citizen and a widow. Though I don't know a lot about solar, I do know when a company is trying to take advantage of me cost wise. Justin, owner of Carlsbad Solar, took me in and treated me like his Mom. A day after I contacted him he was here to look at my roof and found the perfect place to install my solar panels. My home still looks beautiful and you can't see the solar panels from the street. He had the permit almost immediately after I signed an easy to understand contract. Fortunate for me, within a week the solar was on my roof and we were waiting on the city inspector. I love the way Justin works. He makes it Simple to understand, he's extremely knowledgeable and made great decisions for me on technical things I don't understand. Top notch experience from beginning to end. Justin was able to come over to look at our roof and give us some advise same day when we called him for a proposal. We could tell right away that he knows solar in and out and what I really liked is that he understands all the technical aspects about it. Unlike other companies who sent a sales person for a sit down presentation, Justin has much more of the technical and contracting skills. He pointed out to us where the lines would run and how they would make it look good and match colors of the house etc. He takes pride in installing a system that works for the energy needs of the home while at the same time making it look as nice as possible. The project lead time is incredible. Shortly after signing with him we had the panels in our garage and just two days later or so they started to install them. This is a local family business and Justin hires his full time workers unlike some companies who contract the work out. During the installation there was a 6 inch gap or so between the panel rows and Justin told his team to redo the upper panels so they line up just right. He is a perfectionist and takes pride in his work. His employees asked whether to take their shoes off while inside my home, everybody is very respectful. We were told to drive by his home to see some of the panels since we live close by. We did so over a weekend and lo and behold he was on his roof working on his own system. We decided to go with 18 black on black panels and they look flawless. We have been up and running for a few days now and everything is working great. Ok not sure where to start. I have been getting quotes for solar for 7 years now and that is no exaggeration. I just felt that there were too many variables and all the companies were giving me drastically different prices & information. I found Carlsbad Solar through a friend that had gotten their solar done by them. When I called the first time I was unaware that I was speaking to the owner, Justin. I had so many questions because so many companies would give me conflicting information. He was so incredibly patient but what impressed me the most was that he had installed solar and he is an electrical engineer. That is what was always missing... Normally a sales man comes to sell you a system but they don't really know how it all works because they don't install them themselves so they can only give you the scripted answers. Everyone's house is different and the way we live in our homes is unique to each household. This is why Carlsbad Solar blows their competitors out of the water. Justin asked questions that I didn't think would matter. Like how old are your HVAC units? Do you want them to work when the power is out. Not all battery (we got solar and batteries) systems will have enough amps to start the HVAC system. I would hate to spend all of this money and find our later my air conditioning won't turn on during a power outage. It is little things like that which could turn out to be a huge issue. His pricing was excellent, he could get any panels I wanted if I preferred a particular brand, but above that it is a family run business. What an amazing family.They are just really good people and that means a lot to me. Given the choice to work with a small local family owned business versus a big company I will always pick the small family owned business. It is a no brainer. They kept me informed of every step and process as it happened. and went the extra mile several times: from getting the install done in 2 days to digging a small trench, which I think they rarely do, to helping run the backup power connection to my main panel, to asking SDGE to attend to my application more quickly. As a result I was turned on in one day! Also, going way above and beyond what was expected, they ran the backup power from the inverter to my main electrical panel, so if the grid goes out and the inverter can produce power directly from the array, it will go directly to the appliances that need it, in the house without me having to run messy extension cords. A clean install that looks great and professional and exceeded my and my spouse's expectations. I felt well cared for in all my interactions with them, trusted them and they always over-delivered on their customer promise. It felt like i got a complete custom job, at off-the-shelf prices. Every other solar install company quoted me 35-60 days. Carlsbad Solar did it in 7. And at a better price with top-of-the line, new panels (made in USA) and inverter. We had an excellent experience with Carlsbad Solar. After reviewing several other installers (including some big name ones), we decided to support this local business. It was a no pressure experience. A shout-out to Justin and his team for a terrific job. After assessing our requirement, they provided us with easily understandable information on the amount of energy we would need to generate, system choices and specs, the process, as well as provided us with regular updates. The install itself took about two days. After noticing a misalignment of the panels with the roof tile border, they went back up to adjust and fix it. All debris was cleared and it would be hard to tell that a solar project had just been completed. Justin and his team were available to clarify any and all questions we had. Justin also made sure his designee was onsite for the city inspection, and they actually did a pre-inspection to make sure everything was in place. After reading horror stories on Yelp regarding some big name installers, and the 'snake oil salesman' feeling we had on some of our other interactions, it was a relief and a pleasure to work with Carlsbad Solar.
