This restaurant in Trastevere was an unsuspecting little surprise. We went here for lunch and thought that the menu prices were great. Large pizzas for under €6. We stayed across the road and at night this restaurant was always full. I suspect to the cheap prices compared to everywhere else in Rome however the food is very comparable for those that you would pay 2-3 times the cost. The staff were very friendly and accommodating on our little Italian but helped us along with our pronunciation. I'd definitely head back here to eat dinner next time. read more

Worst meal I've had in Italy. 100% tourist trap. You get what you pay for. They may have one of the cheapest menus in the Trastevere area, but the quality is definitely not worth the bargain. Went there for lunch with my partner and ordered the following: Vegetable soup and chickpea soup Lasagna and carbonara Saltimbocca and Tripa alla Romana Soups were lacking flavour and overly salted. The two pasta dishes were bland and the meat dishes were nothing to brag about. Had ordered a half litre of house red but had to send it back because it had soured, I've never sent anything back in my life. Ordered a bottle instead. Bill came to 45euros. Great for college students but not for tourist looking for good food at a reasonable price. If it were possible to give Carlo Menta zero stars we would. The food and service were absolutely terrible. We've had some amazing meals during our 10 days in Italy and this restaurant was definitively the absolute worst! The best thing that I can compare the food to is Ragu pasta sauce with boxed noodles...and that may be a generous comparison. Please do not waste your money. I know the price is enticing, but save your dignity and find another restaurant! Also, the service was the absolute worst. Still busy every night of the week. We used to come here when we studied abroad back in 2011. The prices have NOT changed. We had three carafes of house red, a pizza and a pasta dish EACH and only spent $15 euros. The food is not expensive at all and they give you such big portions. The food is always good. Some dishes are better than others, but I've never been disappointed. The house wine is €8 for a liter, and it's really nice. My fiancé and I went there about 15 times in the three months we were there! TOURIST TRAP Avoid if you desire good food and good service. Very rude staff. Food was horrendously awful. First, our server barely mumbled a hello even though we spoke fluent Italian. Next, white wine tasted like vinegar. Finally, how can you mess up pizza? They figured out how to do that. By using canned artichokes and canned mushrooms on an undercooked crust, they have perfected a drunkards idea of the perfect pizza. As I write this, I'm seriously considering lowering to one star. Carlo Menta offers a reasonably priced menu, outside or inside dining and a well trained staff. While the food isn't what you would get in a less tourist focused place, it's good and fast. We were in Rome for 5 days and managed to eat here everyday! Its so good and sooo cheap! Please note, the BEST time to go is after 3PM, this way you sit outside and avoid crowded tables (they do bring out extra tables and sit you very close to each other). The service is fast, delicious and abundant. My favorite was their shrimp pasta, along with their complimentary bread. We also ordered the liter wine for 8 euros and tiramisu for desert. I had to write a review for this place for my food writing class while studying abroad at AUR. Many of the expats that I met there scoffed at this place, comparing it to an Olive Garden. Shame on them! Although I was told to never patronize a restaurant that had more than one language on its menu for translating purposes, Carlo Menta just wants it's guests to feel welcome. The service is alright, sometimes rushed, which is rare for Italia, but by the time you've downed a carafe of their house red wine, you won't even notice. All of the pasta dishes I have had there are delicious. My favorite was the penne with peas and pancetta! Also their amatriciana is excellent. We came here for our first meal in Rome and were so excited for some real Italian food! Unfortunately, we had all tasted better Italian food in America. Such a let down for our first meal. Also, the wine is very expensive compared to other restaurants nearby. The only reason it is so crowded is because it is one of the first restaurants you see when walking in. Oh my god. That was the worst restaurant experience i have ever been through. Terrible staff and poor service. Two of our friends left and the staff just assumed we were all gonna run away. So they took the rest of us in and surrounded us with staff, started to make fun of us in italian and told us to shut up when we tried to explain. The restaurant was in a cute and lively square in Trastevere. There was even live music in the square, which made sitting outside even better. Food was very good. If you are looking for a lot of food, or a small price this is the place to go! My soccer team and also groups of friends had dinner here plenty of times during my study abroad semester and are never unsatisfied. Drink some of the nice house wine with some bread and enjoy your conversations outside or in the large restaurant they have. It is always busy so call ahead fro reservations or be ready to wait a bit. But, it is worth it and has never left a belly empty. Service is quick and they are wonderful people. Great food, great servers. We went there on Saturday night, at around 8pm. It was very crowded and we had to wait 15mins. While we were eating, the line seemed to grow much longer. We visted this restaurant twice. It was packed both times. We were nervous that it would be a typical tourist-trap place with mediocre food and bloated prices but it isn't. The food is not five star but it is quite good and the value is great. We received very good service both times from the staff. We ate inside both times as the smoking on the patio can be bothersome. This place was recommended to us by a friend and we really enjoyed it. We ordered a liter of their white house wine and it was delicious! We aren't big wine drinkers so this being a very easy wine to drink made it our favorite! We ordered the tourist menu to share...which was a good idea since it's a lot of food. We tried the lasagna which my husband won't stop talking about... apparently it was the best lasagna he has ever had, I agree with him. We also had the pork cutlet with potatoes (the potatoes are just fries)....that dish was good but basic. Overall, we really enjoyed the food, atmosphere, and most importantly the wine! This is very cheap yes, you get what you pay for. I don't speak Italian, but it was also a very basic spot to eat, so I figured why not. I asked for bruschetta, because I love bruschetta. I asked for mozzarella on the side. I received the bruschetta no mozzarella and tried asking for some. The lady just kept walking away, until a second server came over. They ended up bringing out a basket of bread and two whole mozzarella balls. Fine, then the server continuously kept walking away when we tried to order my first course. I don't speak Italian but I know some basic words, the server stood RIGHT next to us, and talked awful about me and my boyfriend to another coworker. And continued to, I felt embarrassed and awful about the situation and myself. As I stared and they knew they were saying things but knew I couldn't exactly understand I almost started to cry, and they did not feel awful at all. Going on, my boyfriend has received his gnocchi with tomato sauce. The tomato sauce tasted like canned sauce and I had never received my meal. At that point we were fed up, and said to cancel my order and we wanted to go. They charged us for the whole basket of bread, having "two servers" and before we even paid they took away our oil and pepper (even though we weren't completely finished). Not all servers there were awful, but I wouldn't go here for anything romantic or authentic. Overall, we stayed in Rome for awhile and this was the worst experience, I've truly ever had. read more
