I visited here with a few vendors of ours after a training session. It was my first time here and they did not disappoint. They are located on Post Oak down town and we were able to walk over as we were training almost a half a block away. We had a few Happy hour special appetizers: Tortita de langosta which consist of mini lobster roll, ballo beans, avocado, chipotle mayonnaise. We also had Guacamole, Salsa y Totopos. Both were very good. Everyone had an array of different drinks. The service was exceptional for such a large group of people. Our waitress never let our glasses get empty. It wasn't very crowded when we first arrived @4 but as it got later the crowd picked up. Such a disappointing visit this week. We hold our meetings once a month in the PNC building, and sometimes visit Caracol afterwards. This time, service was horrible. Our margaritas tasted like they had perfume spritzed over them, and the shrimp empanadas were inedible--they tasted off and smelled very fishy. (The shared taquitos and beet salad were good.) Our service staff didn't bother to notice we weren't touching some of our food or finishing the $16 drinks, and we were too tired to request anything else after waiting over 20 minutes for our check. read more

I have been wanting to try their baked oysters for the longest and I finally got to! What did I think of them? Well, I'll tell you! Honestly, in my opinion they were good but I'd give it a 3.5/5. The ambiance and vibe was very ethnic. Our waitress was super sweet and kind. She was very attentive and helpful for us first timers. Food: -Ostiones Asados 3.5/5: For how expensive they were for a dozen ($29), I truly expected more but oh well. Baked oysters are usually small but these were really really small. In my opinion, not worth your $29. -Tacos de Pescado Estilo Baja (3/5): They are so small! Like bite size. We came here for brunch and did the houston restaurant week. Wow! Watermelon soup was delish! Very flavorful and cool as we sat outside on patio in hot weather. We had our second course - I had the vegetarian option from HRW and it was so tasty! The third course was the French toast with cinnamon ice cream with cherries. So I have known about Caracol for a while now. My friends have been ranting and raving about the beauteous interior as well as their equally sumptuous Sunday brunch. When you think of Mexican food, especially when you live in Texas, vignettes of Tex-Mex usually flurry up. But if you know Hugo Ortega's other restaurants, or at least have been in Houston long enough you must have heard of Hugo's, if not then well now you know. This place is such a fresh take on regional Mexican cooking. It's centered on coastal fresh seafood. Caracol is the Spanish word for conch. It is a modern, contemporary set up with enough visuals to transform you from Houston to a special place. It's a space that you have to experience to fully understand the depth of its beauty. If you have been to Hugo's and you are expecting that type of cuisine, you need to clear your mind and be in a zen state of mind when coming here. If you haven't been to Hugo's and don't know what to expect, then this will be a perfect time to try something new. My parents and I came here for my father's birthday. As it happens to be it is Houston Restaurant Weeks. My mother and I decided to order from the HRW menu while my father couldn't have anything from that menu because of his dietary restrictions so I had to explain to the server what exactly he could. The server was understanding and helpful in making the selection that just for that I could hand out a five star review. The food started coming and it was nothing short of perfection. The service was even better than what I could have imagined. The ambience, the food, and the service. Check. Check. Check. The show stopper was definitely my dessert - el coco. From looking at it, you would think that you are being served a coconut on a very large plate. The placement of the tiny mallet next to it is the definition of adorable. Once you start going at it with full force the coconut shell breaks open and you realize that it's a chocolate "coconut shell," filled with coconut buttercream and each bite of this "postre" is a joyful delight. My father ordered some tea and they bring out their entire tea case for you to make a selection. The water is a boiling 100 degrees and comes with a fair warning. The server's etiquette while serving and wishing my dad for his birthday was more than anything that I was expecting. I usually get a different seafood dish than this and changed my mind because our waiter said, "if you like garlic...." get this one basically. It wasn't that garlicky and it didn't seem to be as much food either, however our lobster tamales in lobster bisque were amazing and so was my partner's bacon wrapped pork shank. Let's do a play by play, shall we? Once we chose our HRW location, I yelped it up. Not surprisingly, half the reviews were left from friends of mine. So I got the low down. Parking had two options: valet and validated garage parking. I hate valet, so garage won. I rolled in early, and partook in the HH. I started with sangria and an order of Sopesitos de Carnitas de Pato. Tiny little plate, but quite good. The mole was tastey. Once the rest of the party rolled in, we moved it to our table. Make a reservation folks. It's the smart thing to do. One of my favorite things about this restaurant during HRW is that they have 4 different menus to choose from. I went with The Land menu. They started with a little cup of something. It wasn't bad, but I don't remember the name of it and wouldn't order it anyway. Lambpops. The second round was delish. Check the pics. The meat was tender enough to defeat with a fork alone. It came on a bed of roasted cauliflower. There was something else with it....but lamb. That's all you really need to know. Main course, Pork Shank! If pictures were a review... Seated atop a throne of mole and sweet potato, this large portion of piggie is more than a meal for most folks. Because I'm a fatty trapped inside of a fatty, I ate mine and helped my friend finish theirs. The flavors were perfectly balanced and fit the menu just fine. Desert was a chocolate brownie and a side of ice cream. No meat just, sauce. While it was good, the vegetarian menu still had the best dessert hands down. It was a chocolate coconut. Sooooooooooooooo gooood. No lies. During the feast I had their signature margarita. It was blue. Tastey, but not all that strong. All about the sauce. Fantasic cocktails and great seafood. Came here with a big party of 14 people, with 5 kids. Love that they have a kids menu to make them feel welcome. Our server was fun and friendly. We went to Caracol for the last day of restaurant week (apparently like 90% of the people also in the restaurant). We had good service, which made me happy because often during the extra busy season of HRW, I feel that is lacking at the places we have been. We chose Caracol because we liked how they had several menus that went along with a theme (seafood, vegetarian, our style, wine pairing, tequila cocktail pairing) and it seemed like a unique restaurant week experience, and it was! Here are the nitty gritty details of what I tried: AMUSE - Campechana Estilo (shrimp, octopus, oyster) - I didn't get to try this one, but my dining companion said it was good - Sopa de Chile Poblano (soup of roasted poblano) - This was a super filling soup, would definitely get it again! ENTREMES - Tamal de Langosta (corn and lobster infused tamale) - Again, my dining companion said this was good - Amarones encamisados (bacon-wrapped shrimp, stuffed with chihuahua cheese and red jalapeño) - The presentation of this dish was neat. The shrimp still had their heads, though the shell of the tail had been removed and wrapped with bacon. I also really liked the mole and potato that was under the shrimp. PLATO FUERTE - Pato con huitlacoche (crispy duck) - This was my least favorite dish of the night, but I am not a big duck fan (too greasy of a meat). My dining companion really liked the crispy outer layer though! I also tried one of the crispy black truffle rice things on the side, and those were delicious!) - Atun a las Brasas (yellow fin tuna) - I loved the charred brussels sprouts on the side and the mole underneath the tuna and greens added a lot of flavor. POSTRE - Xocolatl (dark chocolate brownie-cake, chocolate siphon cake, poleo ice cream) - This was a very rich dessert - yum! - Flan de Coco (coconut custard, kumquats, chantilly cream, amaranth seeds, tuile cookie) - Flan is not my favorite dessert, so at least for me, this definitely did not compare to the richness of the xocolatl dessert. read more

Another solid happy hour place for the galleria area. I decided to try out the happy hour menu here with some of my friends. The restaurant has a very seafood art decor vibe to it. There aren't that many people there on a Monday so I would choose that day if you don't like crowds. They also validate parking for the garage when you eat at the restaurant. An extra level of costumer service that really impressed me was that if you leave your ticket for parking in your car you dont have to go back. You just have to ask the front desk for a validated ticket and they have alot of them at the front desk. Now the happy hour is pretty good. The food as well as the drinks are $7. You might think that's not the greatest price in the world but this place has some high quality food. It's also August and this place participates in Houston Restaurant Week. The drink I got was the mojito classico and it wasn't that impressive if I'm being honest. The drink was completely unbalanced and was very sour. I like mojitos to be subtlety sweet and sour. But my friends had palomas and they were amazing. Instantly regretted all my decisions in life. This being a prime example. Just don't get the mojito and get the paloma instead. The next thing we got was the oysters. Both the grilled and raw ones. The grilled have this amazing smokey flavor and come roasted on a bed of pink Himalayan sea salt. I don't know if that makes it taste amazing but do not put it on your oysters. They are super big and they do not crush easily. The raw oysters are really good too. They have that salty briney taste you look for and they come with three condiments: cocktail, horseradish, and spicy sour sauce. I recommend getting both and get both a dozen. The last thing I had was a pulled pork taquitos. they come with a salsa verde and sour cream with black beans on the side. I also got some roasted brussel sprouts with a chimichurri sauce. They were both really solid and will be getting them again. The taquitos are exactly what you would expect but just full of flavor. I recommend ordering some red salsa as it goes really well together. The black beans are one of the best I've had. I should of ordered a side of black beans but I was bursting at the seams. The brussel sprouts were amazing. I don't know what they put in the chimichurri but amazing. If you find yourself shopping at the galleria and need a spot for happy hour try this place out. Yep! I spent my 30th bday here. My sister threw a surprise party and yes, I was surprised! The staff was very accommodating and on top of coming by and making sure our stuffed face had a clean feeding area. I apologize for no food pic, I was too surprised and hangry so I forgot to take pics of it. I'm sure our lovely faces is what you wanted to see. Their brunch buffet was very tasteful and has lots of variety!!! I'm not a big fan of mole typically but OMG! The beef was teeeeeender! I grabbed two each time I got a plate (and there were many plates...). My other favorite dish that many places can't seem to get right is chilaquiles. There's is magnifico! The tortilla somehow managed to soak in the salsa and seasoning while staying super crispy in the center. All their poached eggs were perfectly made. We only ordered 6 of them just to try but they were so good that we could've easily ordered 24 and made those the bulk of our meal. Then for our entrees we got the Robalo con Mole Amarillo and the Mariscos al Ajillo. The mole on the fish was rich and flavorful, and I wanted to dip everything in it! I rarely dine out for Mexican food because the best comes right out of my madre's kitchen; the only exception is for coastal Mexican, which I can say Chef Hugo Ortega's Caracol serves top notch. Sunday brunch (11am-2:30pm) runs about $35, but the spread of seafood offerings - like ceviches, cocteles, campechana and a raw oyster bar! - make it well worth the price. And don't forget about the dessert table offering champurrado aka spiced Mexican hot chocolate. For dinner, I've done big plate items like the Langosta Puerto Nuevo (fire roasted lobster, flour tortillas, playa la ropa beans, arroz Mexicana $45), but I rec ordering an assortment of ceviches and tostadas then work your way up to a shared entree. And yes, leave room for dessert. The Chocolate Bomba is a fun item to share. My preference above any is to drink and dine at the bar, especially since some of my favorite bartenders work there (shout out to Nas). The "Hard Sun" or "Paloma De Mercado" paired with oysters and a few mezcal tastings ain't a bad way to spend your evening. Had high hopes for Caracol after visiting one of Hugo's other restaurants, Xochi, last year. To be fair, we had a large party (15ppl) during Houston restaurant week (HRW) and it was a busy night for them anyhow. However, the service was slow and the food was pretty disappointing. The good - Similar to Xochi, Caracol is located in a high rise. Valet parking was easy and complimentary. Our table was ready on time (after finding out they got our reservation wrong earlier in the day and having to push dinner back an hour to 8:30pm). The drinks were good (Houston margarita recommended). The bad - the A/C was broken so we sweat it out in Houston August heat with only 1 fan in the room. It took a solid hour to order and receive our first round of drinks. Then another 30mins for our 1st plate. And another for the main course. And another for dessert. And another for our checks. So the whole affair was 3 hours and we didn't get out til after 11pm. The food was bland, over cooked and rubbery. Even if everything else would have gone smoothly, I would not have come back just because the food wasn't good at all for the price point. What bothered me the most is the waitress didn't want to split the checks at the end of our meal (because it would take too long according to her). That was not mentioned or agreed in the beginning and she was receiving a standard % tip on the bill anyhow for the size of the party. Yes it's easy to pay someone back these days with Venmo bu we ended up spending 15 mins anyhow trying to figure out who owed what to the guy who paid. Not our job in my opinion. read more

My friends and I came here for a birthday brunch on Saturday. Turns out they only have brunch menu on Saturday and no lunch menu, which is kind of disappointing. I had ordered the Tostadas de Atun Crudo and Taquito de Langosta de Cabo. The Tostadas de Atun Crudo was refreshing, the tuna was fresh, and it had a good, spicy taste. There was 3 pieces on an order. I really enjoyed this, and I think I would get this again if I come back. The Taquito de Langosta de Cabo was creamy, but not very tasty. I ended up just only finishing half of it. The bread that accompanied it was really hard to slice or chew. I ended up not eating it. My friend and I also don't know why bread was given along with a rice dish. The restaurant itself was very nice, clean, and upperscale. After the first visit, I thought I liked it. When I came back the second time, I was not impressed at all and turned off. I was quite upset that we spent $125 for four plates + 2 drinks + gratuity. What is old, is new again! Its been two plus years since my last visit mainly because my first couple experiences when they first opened up where quite underwhelming. After my recent visit I'm giddy to know that I'll be making Caracol a regular mainstay for dining. I spent some time looking over the great food pictures posted by other Yelpers and they were all very useful. One particular picture that was mouthwatering was the Mariscos al Ajillo, which is short for scallop, shrimp, lobster, clams, mussels, octopus, frog legs, chile de arbol and green onions. A dish that pretty much has everything in the sea on this plate. Great value.....5 stars. If you're looking for a great seafood salad, not a for gulf oysters, so they have these great Navy Cove oysters I think they're around the Jamaican area. These were so tasty I'll be running back again for more. I found service was friendly, tentative and was genuinely interested in getting feedback on the food. Wow! Wow! Wow! You blew my mind away.... This is probably the best brunch I had so far in Houston. I thought it would be a long wait so I called ahead of time and she said it would be a 30 min wait. We arrived early anyways since we were just down the street. We got there and got seated immediately. It was a buffet brunch so there was a line going at that time. There was so many food to choose from I couldn't taste all of it. I started with the oyster and scallops bar... It was so fresh and delicious. The way they dress the oysters all you had to do was to add lemon and Tabasco. They even had a side of oyster shooter.... Yummy I couldn't get enough of it. Let's head over to the main buffet area... I don't know where to start... The succulent pig, top notch. The flavoring was just perfect and the meat was so moist and tender. They had some kind of meatball & vegetables soup there as well.. With its glorious ceiling to floor glass windows and oysters on the half shell, Caracol has quickly found a place in my heart. If you don't mind shelling out a few dollars to celebrate life, come here! Their palomas are delicious, and their seafood small plates are bursting with flavor! " it may be because we had the dishes from the Houston Restaurant week menu but still don't think this would be much different from what they usually serve. My husband and I ordered the soup and salad as starters. Don't order the salad, you just get a piece of watermelon with a leaf deco. Soup was good though! For the main dish, we ordered brisket and shrimp. I loooove shrimp but with my initial bite, it felt like the shrimp was abruptly defrosted from its frozen state, not fresh. Brisket was alright, the sauce was mild so not that savory. Desert was mediocre (churros and chocolate ice cream) but the tres Leche cake was soooo soft! So all in all, besides their soup and cake, just not that great.. I don't think we'll be returning. read more

Caracol is essentially a seafood restaurant with a heavy note of Latino flair. They also offer a robust selection of unique cocktails that will fulfill even the thirstiest of palates. The Jalapeno margarita alone is worth the return! The food is also fresh and the service is definitely top notch. Restaurant week: One of the better places for HRW. You can select from 5 4-course menus. We had "between the waves" and "wines of Mexico." The latter definitely takes the win for generous portions and taste. Caracol, Great start! I was there last night, opening night! I was very happy to see that despite being the first night of service, few if any hiccups in service. I sat at the bar. The bartender was very knowledgable and the craft cocktails were amazing!! Dined on a delicious conch appetizer that I know I will be craving again soon and baked oysters. In addition to the main dining room offerings, the bar offers smaller plates for $7 that all looked great. I look forward to see how this restaurant matures. Keep it up! read more
