This place is an absolute must! We go all the time and usually sit at the bar inside. We love bartender Blanca and Thomas when he works inside. We love the ambiance and service! Service was good, food was good, i would love it if the Food with shrimp had more shrimp, almost skimpy on the shrimpy. Overall it is a good place to go for seafood in the area. It's pricy for the quantity on your plate, but fine for a night out on the water. The menu has a variety of options, I'm sure something will suit your taste. The coca cola steak has a deep peppercorn flavor, probably to even out the sweet from the soda. The atmosphere is good, not a romantic place for privacy, but I recommend a visit. read more

Good service, clean place, COVID handled pretty well (though heard they did not at the start). The food was average and a bit overpriced. Son had the gyro, i had the shrimp tacos. Both were around $15 with no sides included (really, not even chips?). Son gave his gyro a 3, i gave my shrimp a 2.5 so settled in a 3 due to atmosphere. Shrimp taco order was two tacos and covered in something that i think was supposed to be a white cilantro sauce but was kinda mayonnaisey. Went to the Captains inn for lunch twice this week, tiki bar was amazing. Good food and good service. Went back today, it is hot and humid decided to dine inside, very bad choice! I ordered chipotle shrimp tacos. Sounded great, what I received was not a taco not even close to the description on the menu. It was a few shrimp chopped up and rolled in a tortilla and cut in 4 bite size pieces nothing else but a slight drizzle of chipotle not enough to even taste! It looked like a child's plate! Should have taken a picture, I was so disgusted, ruined my appetite. I will never dine inside the captains inn again. read more

Back in the 80's a Grandfather would load his clan up in his Chevy suburban and drive the hour south to the captains inn. The family would have a large table on the porch and overindulge in the cheese dip & breadsticks and, after dinner, a captains grog. These are the memories of the captains inn that I will always hold dear. That being said, this review is for the tiki bar (we ate once recently indoors and it was a bit too banquet-y for my taste). In the past few years, we've always have had amazing service at the tiki. Always friendly and prompt. Drink specials are good. The food our last visit was awesome. Better than expected. We got the gyro, crab cake sandwich, Baja fish taco and a bar pie. The fish taco was ridiculously good. And while the neighborhood and boats going by have changed since the old days, they still have the cheese that I'm obsessed with :-) read more

Very Disappointed! I'm a regular and lately the food has not been up to par. First, 3 weeks ago I ordered the Chilean Sea Bass Boat which was fishy and old; if you don't request a hot bread basket the server will give you bread sticks. The unsweetened ice tea was warm and tasted like used dish water !! On August 06, 2023, we went to celebrate a birthday . The joke was on me. We ordered calamari and received a plate of crumbs and pieces, (it looked like leftovers) no rings. Also, I made the mistake to order my dessert to go, but received a very small piece of cake for $10.00. Lessons Learned! I would be hard pressed to ever go back again. It seems to me that they are back to there old tricks from a few years ago when they were LOUSY !!!! read more

Here's the deal The tiki bar seemed better. Main building Service was awful, bartenders were rude. Food was average. No bread, just bad crackers n butter. Bartenders were very unfriendly in main building. Tiki bar bartenders are good. It's a skip if you want better service or better food. Tiki bar seemed good. Good atmosphere there. We went to Captains Inn for dinner, it was a great experience. We ate in the bar area on a hi top table , it was soo much fun. The menu was great, although slightly expensive,and there was no salad even with a $38 main course. However the dishes were great. Scallops in a sherry sauce were fabulous and the portion was huge. My husband had the mariners platter, an assortment of all fish including filet of flounder, scallops, shrimp . Again the portion were huge, and really wonderful. The waitress Jordan was fantastic, friendly and very efficient. Her service was great. White sangria was very good as well. A great evening, a great atmosphere with super food and service. I enjoyed this place.. it's nicely located by the water. I wasn't sure what to expect since I've never been here but I was pleasantly surprised. The ambiance is welcoming and friendly. The food was pretty good and the service was top notch. I had the pecan crusted salmon. It came with veggies and wild rice. All were tasty. It came with a fresh salad and a nicely flavored chicken soup. The sangria was amazing. I would definitely come back here for lunch or dinner. Me and the family went to Captains on Saturday Evening. This was the outside portion not the actual restaurant. The Fried Calamari was disgusting very chewy and horrible seasoning. The Boneless wings were Honestly the worst I have ever had. Even the quesadilla was foul. 3 out of the 5 of use became terribly ill hours after eating here. NEVER again. read more

The captains inn is a great spot to go to either the full restaurant or the tiki area right on the water. The seafood is super fresh and filling and they have great appetizer specials. I've also been there for two private parties in both of the rooms that they offer and the food was amazing and everything was well organized. Hostess station was inattentive and rude- Four employees staring at each other trying to avoid having to talk to customers. When we finally got their attention and asked for a table (weekday lunch), the hostess looked over at the half empty tables, looked back at us and said "There are no tables available. My brother and I stopped with the boat on 14-Dec-24 on our way to haul out. It's not a quick ride from Brick but we love your place. We sat at the bar in the main restaurant and the bartender was outstanding (professional, friendly and welcoming). The beers and soup were very good. The fish and chips were completely unacceptable. Anyone would have recognized them as a frozen supermarket product out of a box product. The actual flesh was super thin with most of the pieces being batter. Quite disappointing and we didn't complain since it would have ruined the whole experience (we were having a nice time chatting up other patrons). Why not just take the fish and chips off of the menu if you're out of fresh cod? This is a popular and proper seafood restaurant. Your fish and chips should be thick flakey pieces freshly dipped in beer batter and fried just before serving. The tartar sauce was a bit below par as well. Super disappointing and we travelled way down the bay to spend some time here. I know we'll be back since we like to shoot over after summer days at Tices Shoal but I wanted you guys to know about this. read more

My extended family joined together here for a birthday celebration. Most of us were here fir the first time. It was wonderful! Our waitress Laurie treated us like family. She was a delight. The menu was extensive and everything we had was well prepared and tasty. I had the shrimp and scallops over pasta. Delicious! I took some pasta home for later! Ha! The shrimp cocktail was amazing. The Captain's Inn is a long-standing institution in Forked River. You kind of have to know that it's there. They are located at the end of Lacey Road on the water. But everybody knows it's there, and they generally are always busy. It's a nice place to go to when you want a beach atmosphere but don't feel like going over the bridge to LBI or Seaside. I had gone to the tiki bar on many occasions just for drinks. This was the first time that I had eaten in their restaurant section. It's a complex of sorts. They have the old mansion, a few large tents for outdoor dining, and also the tiki bar. They do not have local beers on tap, which is a negative. They have water views. They specialize mostly in seafood, but of course there are other options to eat. Our group actually generally enjoyed the seafood and thought it was better than some of the other seafood restaurants on the shore that we have tried. Each dish had its pluses and minuses. One person in our group has eaten there over the years, and she remembers it being better in the past. I got the broiled seafood combo, and I have to say that the portion of seafood was generous. I usually do not care about large portions, but when it's seafood, it's expensive. So, you want your money's worth. The prices are somewhat high, I have to say. Some of the food items were worth it such as my broiled seafood combo, but the loaded baked potato at $14 was way too expensive. I also would not order the fried calamari again because it tasted frozen out of a bag. Generally speaking, the food here taste like it's from a larger restaurant and doesn't have that small bistro accent to it. We ate outside under the tent, and we enjoyed it a lot. The crowd is mostly older people, I have to say. That's not unusual for Ocean County. The interior of the building could use an update. It is not charming; it's more it's 1970s era atmosphere with a drop ceiling and paneling. With the high volume of customers they have, it's hard to understand why it isn't more updated. So, 4 stars instead of 5. I will probably go back at some point in the future. read more
