This was our first time eating at Hooks Bar & Grill. It was in walking distance to our Motel which made dinner very easy. We ordered the crab cake sliders , the lobster roll , and the shrimp cocktail . I also got a Heineken 0.0. Overall the meal was really good. We loved the bar atmosphere and being able to watch baseball while we ate. I enjoyed that there were also arcade games and things to do. My only reason for giving it 4 stars and not 5 was because of the lobster roll. The lobster meat itself was a little tough and the roll was a little soggy and not toasted up like we hoped for. But it was still okay. The sliders were delicious! And the shrimp were also pretty tasty. Service was phenomenal and we were seated right away. If we're in the area again, we'll definitely stop back in! read more

Beware, don't come here if you're from out of state! Their printed book of ID examples didn't PERFECTLY match the color of our REAL Ohio IDs, so we couldn't be served alcohol. You're better off leaving because the lady will get snotty with you for being asking further questions about it. Left because of how we were treated, not because we couldn't be served. Edit: in response to the business owner, the reasoning she gave us was the color of the ID. If it were because of the DOB and she had expressed that, we would've gone to the car for our passports. Props to her for doing her job I guess?? So glad you support your rude employees! read more

The owners response to a previous review did not accurately depict the situation as DOB was never expressed as an issue when reviewing an out of state ID. The server told us the ID did not match the color of their likely dated book of state IDs. The whole second form of ID thing is also bs, most people don't regularly carry a social, passport, or birth cirtificate when going out for a drink...He's lying to save face. The place was adorable. Bright, sunny, clean. I loved all of the games, especially the table games. The waitress was very sweet. The food was amazing and delicious however I have a few comments which is why I did not give it 5 stars. We were a table of 4. We ordered 2 soups and one order of wings, then 4 meals. All of our meals were served and we asked where our soups and apps were and she said: "Oh, I'm going to bring that out right now". We were quite upset and mentioned it but she didn't seem to do anything about it. My meal - which was the most expensive - the Lobster Roll was not only a tiny portion with a small amount of fries but it was completely cold! Everything else was piping hot. I did dump the lobster into my soup and enjoyed it thoroughly. The clam strip platter was very good! You could tell that the clam chowder and clam strips were home made but the fries were frozen. read more

Very good food for a bar. I went a few times during our stay, and enjoyed the live music one night. The service was usually very slow, but still friendly and knowledgeable. I got the cheesesteak once, and a burger another time. Better than the cheesesteaks on the boardwalk, at least from my experience. read more

We love Hooks and being an Ortley Beach full timer walking distance makes it even better. We never had anything that was not good and the people there are great too ! I will say we feel bad that the "old Hooks" will be gone soon....I hope they keep the ship bar and the wood flooring for the new place. read more

Got wings ! Asked for well done , crispy. The wings were temp. cold. They were red on inside. Server told me they are suppose to be red. This is why I order them crispy, well done. Hooks was great! It's a dive bar and restaurant with some charm. They call it coastal casual :) They have pool tables and other games as well as outdoor seating. Our meals were good... we had the old bay crab cheese fries, fish and chips and burgers. Everything was yummy and service was good. We'll definitely go back. We came here one evening around 6 for dinner. They were semi busy but not overly so. There was a sign at the front saying to seat yourself. About 10-15 mins later someone actually came to see if we had been helped yet, we hadn't been. She got us waters and a beer for my bf and took our orders. My water was really gross and tasted much different than my bfs. About 20 mins after our order was placed she came by and said, 'I just checked and your order will be right out!' and walked away quickly so I couldn't even get a new water. Another 15 mins went by and she walked past just giving a thumbs up and walked away quickly. At this point we were very hungry, had been waiting in the restaurant for about an hour and still had no food. We asked to cancel the order, pay for the beer, and leave. The server gave us such an attitude saying, 'Well didn't anyone tell you food is a 45 min wait?' No, you're the only person who has spoken to us and you didn't say that or else we would have left an hour ago. Overall really bad experience and I don't recommend it. read more

I was there yesterday with 2 others from about 12:30 -4pm Will behind the bar was on the ball so had discussed returning later that evening. Was solo later on in the night and was denied entry by the security due to the fact that it being a FOREIGN ID (Irish license) Explained to him that I had already been there for hours earlier in the day with will and his response was that when he's there he's the boss and was extremely rude and aggressive with me. This place serves boardwalk food, $6 drafts and have fair prices considering the area we were in :) I enjoyed my chicken tenders and their house fries tasted so yummy and crispy! Wait time was a little long but only because there was only one waitress working (she did a great job!). My friend got the fish and chips and she told me the batter was mushy and not fried thoroughly and that the fish could use some more seasoning as it was quite bland. The salad was pretty small for what it was worth however the thinly sliced Parmesan cheese elevated the salad greatly. Would I come here again? We've been here twice once for brunch and once for dinner. We really enjoyed brunch and would definitely return for that, but were unimpressed with dinner. The shrimp tacos only had two tiny shrimps on each tacos - very skimpy and disappointing. Food was typical bar food if that's what you're looking for, nothing special. Service was slow. We had a larger group but everyone had finished eating before the last two people in our group were served their dinner. Yeah!! NO let's enhance this and it will be great but as served now I don't recommend it. This bread is too thick therefore you need more lobster and properly distributed within the sandwich. Great little hole in the wall type spot right off the boardwalk in Seaside. The drinks are cheap and they have a lot of cool games to play. We waited 20min before being greeted, another 20min for drinks, and incredibly, 35 more minutes for food, with one meal missing for an additional 10min -- Soggy fish and chips, tacos on flour tortillas when we clearly ordered corn, and a rude busboy. Went in at 5pm on a Saturday. Restaurant had a few tables and a few people at the bar. Wife and I sat down at the disgusting bar. Waiting 10 min while watching employees talk and look at their phones. No one came up to us so we got up and left. What a joke. read more

Upon arriving to the restaurant we waited for a few minutes and a guy seated us. He did inform us that they had a bunch of tables to serve and it would be about 45 minutes until we got our food. We appreciated the heads up with the time. Unfortunately it took about 15 minutes for a server to realize we were even there. A table next to us were waiting longer and complained then upon them ordering she noticed we didn't even have drinks yet. Server was super nice, mentioned that she's not usually a server but they are short staff. Completely understandable. We ordered our drinks and food together and they did come out within 45 minutes. The service was great besides them forgetting about us. I wasn't thrilled with the taste of the food and the prices. The food was just your average basic food. The pretzel was honestly the best thing we ordered. My bbq pulled pork tacos didn't come with bbq sauce, I had to ask. My friend's lobster roll came on a hot dog bun instead of a roll. We tried my friend's calamari which seemed like something frozen from a box in the grocery store. For the prices they charge it isn't the quality you would expect. I am a fair person and try to be optimistic as possible, I understand everywhere is short staffed right now. However, I wouldn't return due to enjoying more tasty food elsewhere for less money. read more

Extremely unsanitary.. three men behind the bar.. all of which were constantly eating , and handling customers drinks , never washing their hands .. we were overcharged for food . Prices on special board and check were higher by at least four dollars per item.. the bartenders were arrogant and not really attentive . They have a great menu, and really can go far, if their staff evolved with the changes they made, staff needs to up their game .. and ow we'd need to pay more attention to what's going on behind the bar...dead weight .... read more

Our party of 6 went Labor Day weekend. Good sized crowd there, and plenty of casual outside seating. Menu prices were very reasonable. Basic bar food menu. We had drinks, appetizers, and dinner. Overall food was bar food quality. Would we return? Probably if we were in Seaside Heights again and looking for reasonable casual dinner. Price was right, and we enjoyed the outdoor casual setting.
