We will have to give this place another try, but first impression wasn't a great one. My favorite part was the first gen Camaro sitting out front. My group is all locals but we were treated like bennies. It was the first hot day of the year, so everybody was out in full day drinking summer form. No table service, we had to walk up to the bar. No big deal when you're not getting an attitude from one of the bartenders while politely asking for some water. I included "when you have a minute," cause I knew she was busy, but she was too quick to bark back "you're gonna have to wait" to hear it. Completely understand the crowd and being overwhelmed but it ruined the rest of our time there and we left earlier than anticipated after that (and got food elsewhere.) Plenty of other places around to enjoy the sunshine. Thankfully the outside bar (Tiki bar) seems to be 21+. Don't quote me on that, I can't find anything to confirm it, but they were checking IDs to get in. read more

I don't like writing a bad review and hurting a business and it's employees, but the food was so poor and the prices so high that I feel people should be warned and aware before they spend a lot of their hard earned money here. Our fried calamari was rubbery, my broiled red snapper ($39) was previously frozen, dry and tasteless. My dad's soft shell crabs ($45) were flabby and grey looking--he gave them a five out of ten. My mom's coconut shrimp appetizer was the best of the lot and I think it was bought frozen and prepared and simply fried in the restaurant. I'm really mad that this places charges so much for just plain bad food. I feel ripped off. read more

I can't say enough about how wonderful this restaurant and Tiki Bar is!! Located by the water, Captain's Inn has been owned and/operated by the same family for almost 60 years. There is a laid back, comfortable feel with beautiful views. You can even arrive by boat!! I would describe the dress code as dressy casual, but fully casual at the Tiki Bar. But the main reason to go to a restaurant is to eat, and Captain's Inn has never disappointed. Lunch, dinner, brunch, drinks or private events, the food is consistently good quality with generous portions and outstanding taste. My favorite menu item is the She Crab soup served with a splash of brandy on top. A great comfort food! Of course their seafood menu is diverse and yummy, but their 'land' items are also diverse and yummy! In the over 36 years that I have been a patron of Captain's Inn, I have had so many different dishes it's hard to express how perfectly cooked and delicious they are. We have held many private parties there, from small intimate gatherings to parties with over 100 people. My familty and I had our Thanksgiving Dinner there yesterday. It was amazing. We were seated in the back room and our waitress Alexa waiting on us immediately for beverages. There were two buffet's for the main courses and buffets for all the sides. Food was hot and delicious. I'm not a turkey lover so I choose the prime rib and salmon. One was better than the other. The food was and bartenders inside the restaurant were great. The chicken was perfectly cooked and was full of flavor with and without the pumpkin pesto. The potatoes and vegetables were also perfectly cooked. My one and only complaint has to do with the security or lack thereof; especially on a night with a large amount of people going in and out of the tiki bar. I should not have to be concerned about beer bottles ending up ON my vehicle when leaving. And seeing as that it was two different kinds of beer, clearly it was two different people carrying beer bottles out of your establishment. As if finding one beer sitting on my running board wasn't enough, finding a second one dropped in to the spare tire carrier on my Jeep is completely unacceptable. I was hanging out with a friend in jersey and we were looking for a place to eat and came upon this seafood restaurant, it is off the beaten path kind of restaurant. Following gps you pass a bunch of nice looking houses, then you arrive at a dock and nearby is this wonderful restaurant. We came during a weekday for lunch and I thought I was in retirement land, I would say 95% of the people there were seniors. I've had weekday lunch in a lot of different places but this was unique. The menu had a lot of variety of seafood. I had the sea bass which was very juicy and tasted fresh out of the river. My partner had the lightly fried shrimp and scallops, this was lightly fried where you can still taste the shrimp and scallops, which was a win since some places tend to over fry seafood. Service was ok, they didn't refill our water for quite a bit of time. Food came out fast. Decor was quite back In the days, nicely decorated, not overly modern at all. They hold parties for special occasions. Definitely something to consider if looking for a space because there is plenty of it. Plenty of parking in their spacious lot. Prices are reasonable. There isn't a whole ton out here. We went a little off the main road to get here. Would recommend if you are in the vicinity. They were open and it was not even in season yet for the jersey shore areas, so many restaurants were closed. read more

We had a family party here in one of their party rooms. They were very accommodating to our large group. We did have to guarantee 25 people which was not an issue for us. We were able to pick the menu and get an open bar for our guests. The servers were friendly who took care of our party and helped us with anything we needed. Very cute atmosphere inside and feels perfect for the shore. The food was average and I know that some in our group have come for dinner or lunch and have spoken highly of it- so maybe it was just large quantities and what we picked. Everyone had a nice time. We went here for a birthday dinner on a Monday night. Surprisingly busy, we were seated immediately by a friendly hostess. Still as I remember it, we sat on the windows overlooking the tiki bar. A nice casual salty atmosphere. Service was quick and efficient as we ordered our appetizers. The star of the show was the stuffed portobello mushroom with jumbo lump crab. Just devine! I will definitely order that next time. We also ordered fried Tubes & Tentacles (Calamari) but there were no tentacles! Still crispy and tender, they were delicious. For entrees, we ordered the twin jumbo lump crab cakes with a side of garlic mashed and veges. The crab cakes were very good, albeit breaded, and had some jumbo lump crab in them. The garlic mashed were very mild in flavor and the mixed veges were great! Tender and fresh brussel sprout halves were the star of that side! My partner ordered the Mariner's Platter which was fried fish, scallops, shrimp and clam strips. It was heavily fried and just ok. He said he wouldn't order it again. Most of it went home. My husband and I usually have dinner at Captain's Inn, maybe 2- 3 times a year, for past 7 years, we lived in the area. You can always count on a solid meal with good portions. The she crab soup is one of my favorites and I always order. Appetizers of choice were clams & shrimp. Delicious & fresh! Tonight, we both ordered red meat, cooked perfectly. My husband had the rib eye with scallops and I had the filet wrapped in bacon. Garlic mashed potatoes are always on point. Their side of vegetables are also seasoned and cooked well, with good texture. Tonight, we had their famous huge carrot cake, enough to share with many. I also enjoyed the mary jane cake. This was a notable low point during our shore trip over 4th of July weekend. I came here for dinner with some top-tier chums after seeing some decent reviews and what looked to be a fun location right off the water (which I guess would technically be the literal Forked River). We were faced with an important decision the minute we walked in. The formal "restaurant" on one side of the street seemed very dead, with a median age of roughly 67. However, there was a significantly more rollicking establishment across the street that had a tiki bar feel. My understanding is they were both operating under the Captain Inn's umbrella, so to speak. We chose the casual tiki bar on the other side (the fact that we were on vacation was a significant factor) and after sitting down were ignored for over five minutes. We were JUST about to stand up to reverse our decision when the waitress showed up to take our order. Things could have been very different and probably better for us if she hadn't, but we'll never know for sure. The vibe was off and not our speed for the most part. The Millennial Chum loves places like this, but it was super loud and chaotic and I'm not crazy about having to make an effort to lean across a table to talk and be heard. There were huge chunks of conversation I never understood, which is a shame. And for the most part, the live music wasn't a factor - I can't imagine what that would have done to the overall acoustics. As it was, the band there seemed to be having some technical difficulties and every once in a while there would be screechy feedback that permeated the establishment. But ultimately, I'm willing to acknowledge we made the wrong decision for the group in being at the tiki bar, and that part at least is on us. We split a few apps, including the coconut shrimp and the tater kegs, which looked to be an edgy variation of a potato skin. Nothing here was mind-blowing, though my favorite was probably the shrimp - difficult to mess that up in my experience. I wish I'd taken a picture of the tater kegs, which I was picturing as shaped like literal kegs, but they were basically like hunks of tater. It's difficult to describe. Not bad, but in no way rises to the level of quality I expect from a "normal" tater skin. For my entree, I thought it was morally correct to get something seafood-ish so I opted for the lobster roll. Really mediocre. The interior was lobster-centric (how could it not be?) but it was mixed with some type of condiment combination that in my opinion took away from the taste of the actual lobster. The best lobster rolls I've had just let the lobster be the star. The other issue (and this to me is an easy fix) is that the description of the roll on the menu is curiously lacking; it mentions a toasted roll but nothing to elaborate on the other ingredients. There were chunks of crunchy celery, I believe, which I'm not a fan of at all. Squeezing a quick sentence or two below that menu item would do them a world of good. The drink situation was rough. I had a frozen rose drink (I don't see it on the website menu) that was just terrible and I didn't finish. Super dry and tasteless; there was no sweetness whatsoever to that beverage and what I was hoping would be a nice refreshing accompaniment was nothing of the sort. The service was poor, and there's no way to sugarcoat it. We had the aforementioned red flags at the very beginning and they were a harbinger of things to come. It was difficult to flag down the waitress throughout the meal, and any thought to getting dessert here was put to rest during the second half of our stay when it was clear that doing so might add an extra 45 minutes to the experience. (We got ice cream nearby that rocked.) She was perfectly nice but had way too many tables assigned to her and barely had time to get our orders much less check in consistently. A shame. If I had to do it all over again? The quiet old people place across the street. Hands down. read more

The fries at the tiki bar are pretty good and they seemed to have decent drink specials. The main restaurant changes their menu on a weekly basis. I had the mahi mahi with a mandarin sauce on top over a bed of rice with vegetables. The mahi mahi was overcooked and the rice was too salty so it missed the mark. I also had a decently sized warm cookie with ice cream and that was good. Nonetheless, if you have a boat you should take it down to the tiki bar, dock it right in front of the bar, and enjoy some drinks with friends. read more

The been around forever Captain's Inn in Forked River, NJ has all the comfort of a decade old pair of Levi's and that is certainly welcome after enduring the current crop of professionally curated (eg boring) establishments that seem to have been designed by the least interesting man in the world. If I never see another supersized lighting filament through clear glass, I'll die a happy man. Sit down and enjoy a basket of supermarket bread sticks and oyster crackers still wrapped in cellophane. I shouldn't like it but I do. Then follow that up with a fantastic cup of she crab soup while the muffled sounds of bar band Allman Brothers wafts in from their palm-strewn Tiki Bar across the street... more points for atmosphere. Finally, enjoy some stuffed salmon with crab and shrimp that was fantastic. The only downer was the layout of this obviously added onto structure. Just getting to the restroom which was 15 feet from our table, required a half-marathon around pianos and oddly placed tables. I suspect that's what institutional character is all about.
