The wait here is a bit longer than most fast food places, but it tastes fresh when it comes out! Good value for money and tasty, a good lunch spot! But soo unhealthy, and soooo fried, you will struggle trying to find something on the menu that is not fried. Not a good experience! Ordered the sampler and the fish was super greasy, chicken tasted bland, hush puppies seemed not done on inside. The shrimp was pretty good. Broccoli tasted like it came straight out of microwave and the baked potato looked old! Needless to say I threw 75% of this meal into the garbage!!!! Horrible experience today!!! read more

I had no idea this location was here until today, prompting me to excitedly swing by on my way home. I'm aware of the one near DRH but it's way out of my way and just not worth the trip for (key phrase alert!) fast food. This little nugget is tucked in past a gas station and if not for GPS the glare of the sun would have made me miss it. In hindsight, cars parked in the parking lot but none in the drive thru at 5:30ish on a weekday should have been a sign - Sadly I was too focused on reconstituting fish with malt vinegar in my near future to clue in to the wait I would be embarking upon by going through the drive thru. I ordered a fish and chicken family pack with 2 large sides for a grand total of $20.92, including tax. Ignore the fact we all know Captain D's is second to Long John Silvers - The closest one being waaay out in Knightdale and an imposter LJS with KFC sides -- I was stunned at the prices here at Captain D's. A meal that claims to feed 6 for that price is rare. The downside is, I did wait over 20 minutes in the drive thru for this order...Which is not really a "downside" as they clearly had to cook the food to order. Eventually the bags did come forth from the window via the super friendly and genuinely pleasant employee and I was on my way. Of note - I asked for a handful of malt vinegar packets and she darn sure gave me plenty. She also gave me a great supply of napkins without asking for any. This small little token was appreciated as most fast food joints act like you're bankrupting the joint by getting more than one condiment and one napkin per person. Once home, the hot food was still hot, the slaw was still cold, nothing leaked, not even a packet of vinegar. *pshew* The chicken was definitely not what I remember it to be - They are now run of the mill, bar fare variety fried tenders. Kaka. We won't be having any chicken from here again. The mac n cheese was unremarkably edible and the slaw was good. The fish however was really darn tasty for origin-unknown-drive-thru fish. Again, it's no LJS's but it is the closest thing we have to it, and I'll take it, especially at that price. read more

This place is disgusting and has the worst customer service l have ever experienced in a fast food place. My friend and l waited 30 minutes for our food, which when it finally arrived was greasy,tasteless and just plain disgusting. Just driving by at lunchtime. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food ( a lobster salad sandwich) and the good service and comfortable and clean seating area. Price was great too. I'll come again. read more

The service it terrible. I have been to this store three times. The first, I waited 20 minutes for dine-in fish, the second saw the store close for no reason at 12:30pm, and the third was today's drive-through experience. The person on the other end (inside) was rude and just yelled "I cannot hear you" at me. I was talking plenty loud. I got the grilled whitefish (blackened) with a grilled shrimp skewer - both were so flavorful, no sauce was needed. The steamed broccoli was perfectly cooked and the fish was served on a bed of rice. Served with a yeast roll that I tried to resist, but was melt in your mouth. This is the best $10 spent recently - great meal, friendly staff. read more

The problem with Captain D's in general is that due its varied menu it's never going to operate as efficiently as say a McDonalds. If they get a few large orders ahead of you then you're in a for very loooooong wait as I had. It's great then that they have items like shrimp, crab, clam strips, etc. but if it's potentially going to take the same amount of time that it would have to buy Mrs. Paul's/Gorton's from your local grocery and make it yourself is it really worth it? I'm sure people there are doing the best they can but at the end of the day it's still supposed to be fast food not 5 minutes plus per car at the drive thru. If you do go at least try to avoid the lunch and dinner rush times. read more

I can't say that the service was good it was barely at all. The lady in drive thru had an nasty attitude as if I was bothering her. Then when I got my order the okra was burned, the Mac and cheese tasted like it was sitting for a while. The only positive thing I can say is that the fish was fresh and hot. We ordered large lemonades and instead of saying we only have one size the gave us a large cup and charged us for 4 lemonades. I will never return there. It was told to me to be a great place. I ordered the fish and french fries with green beans. No fries were served with my meal. The green beans had meat in them. Strange. The fried fish was so greasy. I may have to see my cardiologist after this meal. I definitely had to see the toilet after this meal. The food was prepared quickly. read more

It took 30 minutes to get my take out order and the place was practically empty. The food is average and definitely not worth the wait. 30 minutes from ticket to order up is unacceptable. I see the same complaints in other reviews. Clearly the owner or manager doesn't care. read more

My food is ALWAYS hot and fresh when I come here - right down to the veggie sides; I don't really eat fries anymore, so I'd get the green beans and/or corn and it all literally stays fresh once I'm back to my place and ready to eat. I'm from Charlotte where there's more than one Capt. D's, so I was surprised to see Durham had just this one. I have gone through the drive thru twice overall and each time the service was still good and food still hot and fresh. When I'm hungry for it and know I have the time, I usually never go through drive thru (as I am very much aware of how long the wait can be and would rather my seafood not be rushed) so I always just go inside and wait. They're understandably busy, but always nice and thorough with my order. The only thing I wish was for the meals to come with drinks and they add more variety for sides (mashed potatoes, smaller size options for corn on the cob, okra without it being fried... just to list a few). read more
