The power had gone out in our neighborhood for several hours so I stopped in here to dine-in on a Saturday evening since I had a coupon. It seems most people do takeout, at least at night, since I was the only one eating in. COVID has certainly impacted things like getting condiments and filling up fountain drinks. I got a shrimp dinner and was pleased that they do offer vegetables as sides (I got broccoli). I've always liked this Captain D's. I usually go with fried fish or a combo with fried fish and shrimp. I also like their hush puppies, fries, and slaw. I have tried some of their premium sides (baked potato, corn on the cob etc.), They are ok, but not really worth an upgrade in price. Since Covid, I have mostly gone through the drive-through. They can be a bit slow, but it's probably because they are making the food as you order it so that is a good thing. I know Captain D's is a chain and it is fast food so if you don't set your expectations too high, I think you will find this place to be pretty good and will satisfy any fried seafood cravings. read more

I am fussy about my seafood, and tend not to order it at many restaurants I visit b/c it's usually too expensive. So, my experiences at this "fast food" seafood place was a very PLEASANT SURPRISE. In general, the portions are well-prepared (they even fry the fish "to order"), plentiful, and very good-- almost as good as any of the quality seafood places I've tried. Everything is made to order so once you order and pay there's a little bit of a wait until they call your order, so you know it's made fresh. They also have a few choices of grilled fish and seafood. The chairs could use an update because when you sit they sink, plus they're made for taller people and always cut off the circulation in my legs since I'm short and my feet barely touch the floor. This " fast food" place is a complete joke. In the drive thru for over 30 mins! There were only 2 ppl working in there. One in the kitchen and one running the drive thru and walk ins! They should not even have opened or at the very least closed the walk in option. Only giving the 2 stars because the food is good. Wont return to this location. Ever. Had I been the one driving and not my husband, I would have left out of the line after 15 minutes and that 15 minutes is still a long time to wait in a drive thru. Disappointing. The dining room is in I'll-repair--with a huge rip in the bench seat along the front wall. Service is so slow that you'd expect your food to be piping hot, but you'd be disappointed. Modestly warm at best and soaking in grease, so much so that it drips out of the end and onto your shirt. The fries have a mysterious coating, and the slaw seems to be made of chipped cabbage cores. The okra is a "premium" side, which means you pay more fore a smaller portion. The Captain D's on the other side of town seems a little better. read more

I'm not sure if the business has a new owner but in the past years it was a African American couple who owned the place and worked in there . When they had the establishment the wait was shorter and customer service just on point . NOW I feel the place has fell into the hands of bad management and poor quality of employees. The staff will have you waiting 30-45 min for your food inside or drive thru with no apology or concern for the inconvenience as well as the wait might result in cold fish . It's a good spot for lunch if you've got a seafood craving and don't have the time or the $$ for top-dollar, or just enjoy good old fashioned fried comfort food. Captain D's is more of the soul food side of fast food, and is reminiscent of some of the fish fries I had at church growing up. Sure, it's not good for you, but so long as you don't eat here everyday, you'll be fine. The menu includes healthier options now, such as broiled talapia served with wild rice and broccoli. So, if you have the health nut in the office that refuses to go with you because of reputation, assure them that it's not all cardiac-arrest-inducing, and they'll be well fed. As far as the staples, the fish is fantastic. It's a far step above Long John Silvers. The fries are excellent as well. I recommend dousing both the fish and the fries in as much malt vinegar as you can stand. Trust me, it's worth it. It loses a star due to coleslaw. It's just "meh." And I hate the word "meh" but it's the only way to describe it. It's relatively inexpensive, especially with coupons, and the staff is always friendly. Also, a BIG factor for me especially - the place doesn't smell like a grease-pit-fish-factory. Pun fully intended, It's apparent the Captain runs a tight ship in the cleanliness department. Capt. D's is the captain of a fried food greasy caloric overload chain tugboat. You feel guilty eating here...but we've all been here at one time or another trying to decide between the healthier steamed frozen veggies or the crispy fried sides. But who are we kidding? It's all about the fried food - quick and cheap. CD fits that bill to a tee. You know that scene in Forest Gump where his best friend Bubba is describing all the ways to prepare shrimp? Well if that scene hadn't been conglomerated and incorporated into the chain of "Bubba Gump" seafood places, I would seriously think that Captain D's was the originator of that idea....except everything (and I mean everything) is pretty much fried as others have noted. If they could fry a salad....I think they would. I hadn't eaten in a CD's in almost a decade...and it's safe to say that some things never change which is a comfort to my weary soul sometimes. At CD's you can pretty much expect something fried with a couple of sides for a reasonable price. It's not the best quality, but it does come out freshly fried and crispy. I like the fact that pretty much everything I've happened to order here has come out consistent. Also, it's a bit hard to find a beer-battered fish and chips plate (as opposed to the 'country style' or breaded callabash style) out in NC. But CD's does a decent job with their beer-batter. The best hint/suggestion I can give (as a resident cheapskate) is to sign up for their online D's Club. If you do, you get your choice of a free meal coupon for either the fish and fries or chicken and fries. On your birthday, they'll send you a free coupon too. Besides that, they'll send you coupons for specials like a free dessert for Father's Day or what not. I know...it's not like they're spectacular deals, but they do offer another dimension to the ol' burger and fries or Taco Bell lunch in the area. BTW, no free wifi exists here. So don't expect any extras here beside the freshly fried food, paper towel rolls on the table and squirting jars of tartar and shrimp cocktail sauce. They have a TV in the far corner seemingly fixed on CNN the times I've been there. Otherwise, this place makes a nice surrogate for the NC State Fair and it's open year round. ;-) read more

Pros: Hot, flavorful, crispy exterior yet moist interior fish (honestly, do you want anything more?!?) Low carb side dishes available Cons: Longer wait time in drive through than typical fast food Hushpuppies with onions (yuck!) No drink with the combo. I went here for my lunch break during the week and went through the drive through. It was tough to make a choice from all the variety on menu, but I love a traditional English style fish and chips with salt and vinegar, so I ordered the fried whitefish filets with 2 sides, which I opted for okra and broccoli. The combo didn't come with a drink, and I think it should since I had to order it separate which came to $10 including the drink. A bit steep for fastfood, but you get what you pay for. I was the only person in line, and had to wait 10 mins to get my order, but I attribute that my fried items being fried to order. After getting my order I opened the lid until I got home so it didn't get soggy, and it was still plenty hot when I arrived. The fish and okra were delicious with vinegar packets provided. The hushpuppies were off putting because of the onion inside, and frankly I'm not sure why you would put onion in. There was so much food that I couldn't get to the broccoli right away, but when I did it was soggy, but that's probably because it sat around before I ever got to it. Overall, a positive experience, and I will definitely go again, but eat inside. I think Captain D's sends out coupons in the mail which I will definitely utilize, so feel free to send them my way, lol! read more
