I think of a question I would want to ask the owners here: "Would you eat this food?" I understand buffet food is not the most luxurious, but at least put some effort. This is like cheap 1980s Chinese buffet...or British-Chinese as opposed to American-Chinese. My first plate had General chicken, "hibachi" chicken, and rice. The general chicken was just sweet on sweet...no other flavoring, and definitely no spice. The Hibachi chicken simply tasted of soy sauce. Disappointing to say the least. My second plate looked like an 8 year old's. Pizza, fruit, and chicken on a stick. The chicken was dry, and as I work soon, a dentist run before I clock in was not feasible. My wife, my two young adult children, and I tried Captain Buffet on Mother's Day because we have been to most of the Chinese buffets around the Citrus Heights/Roseville area and wanted to give this place a chance. I understand how buffet restaurants work. Many of them use bulk foodservice suppliers, frozen or pre-prepped items, sauces, rice, seafood, appetizers, and steam-table holding equipment. That is normal for the buffet industry. I am not expecting fine dining from a buffet. But even with bulk or frozen ingredients, the food still needs to look fresh, be properly rotated, clearly labeled, held at the right temperature, and presented in a way that makes customers comfortable eating it. Unfortunately, this place did not meet that basic standard for us. The restaurant felt small and not very warm or welcoming when we walked in. The buffet selection was limited, and most items looked like the same basic Chinese buffet food, but with very little care in presentation. The sushi was dry and tasted like it may have been thawed or sitting too long. The hot food did not have much flavor, and some items looked unappealing before we even tried them. The Mongolian beef and steak area was especially disappointing. The steak was not clearly labeled, so customers could not tell what kind of meat it was, and some of it looked grayish and room-temperature. The fried chicken wings were very dark and overly crispy on the outside, but when opened, the inside looked yellowish instead of fresh white meat, so we decided not to eat them. Even simple items like fried rice looked cheap and unappetizing. It had a yellowish color and did not look like proper fried rice. Again, I understand buffets are built around volume and cost control, but food should still look fresh, safe, and appetizing. For over $26 per person, this was not worth it. Very impressed by this Chinese buffet. The cost is about $28 per person, for full buffet enjoyment and drink, includes the tax. I went in hoping to like at least 50% of the items I tried, but I actually really enjoyed the majority of their buffet menu! It's not a huge buffet, but they have a lot of variety and the food is very flavorful. The items that stand out are the honey walnut shrimp, the green beans, the sushi with the cream cheese, the garlic shrimp, and I would say the hot sour soup! But there's a lot I didn't get to try (this is despite getting up a total of maybe 4 time to get more food). The restaurant itself was pretty busy, definitely a family-friendly vibe, I'd say the staff was friendly and quick to remove used plates from our tables. The only reason I give it a 4 instead of 5 is because the floor wasn't as clean as I think it should have been, I saw scraps of garbage and food in very visible areas but the employees didn't pick it up during my time there. A couple of things didn't give this old lady extra elevated pressure but if the restaurant cooks can be easy on the salt I believe the food will be eatable. The reviews go this place is pretty low and I can see why. Customers don't come flocking in due the reason of the food because the price is cheap with drinks included. That is another thing that I suggest owners take a look at due to the fact that not all customers drink fountain drinks and just water. I came over on a Saturday at noon, and they weren't that busy. I was surprised. On the weekend, it's the dinner menu all day long, and it's about $27 and change after tax, which includes your drink, and that's not bad. They do offer a senior discount if you are over 65. It is a smaller buffet, but they did have lots of choices. They had a salad bar, a decent sized, dessert bar, a good sushi section, and a Mongolian BBQ/hibachi station. They had. American choices, such as french fries, fried chicken, pizza. And your normal Chinese choices like broccoli, beef, pepper, beef, etc.... They also have a few dim sum selections. I tried the siu mai, and it was OK, but nothing spectacular. They had three different soups. I tried the tamarind soup, but to me, it was a bit too sour. I know that that's the nature of tamarind, but I thought they would "zhuzh it up", to make it a little bit more savory. In fitting with the name of the restaurant, they had a lot of seafood. Fresh crab legs. Fried crab, "Crab" and cheese, which is actually a fish called surimi. You will often see it called " Krab." They had oysters on the half shell, and they had stuffed oysters. They had crawdads, And they even had snails! The snails were very good, but they were pretty spicy, and I wish they would've marked that the way they marked that the crawdads were spicy. I didn't go for the crawdads. They had baked salmon They had shrimp several ways, including peel and eat, fried shrimp, and coconut shrimp, which I absolutely love. Apparently the peel and eat shrimp and the fried shrimp were not deveined, I know that's not a big deal, I'm just not a fan of eating "shrimp poop." Overall, I thought it was a good meal. It was a 10/10 for me! Now, this isn't The Bacchanal but it definitely hit the spot! I wanted a Chinese buffet and this was exactly what I needed. I thoroughly enjoyed the chilled snow crab legs. The meat was sweet and plump. The raw oysters were fresh and clean! Captain has a variety of Chinese dishes like the fried rice, chow mein, honey walnut shrimp and dim sum. 10/10 They had Japanese food like an array of sushi rolls, sashimi and baked giant oysters. Bomb! My other favorite dishes were the crawfish, fried blue crabs, fried salt & pepper shrimp and the corn. They also had sinigang soup for the Filipinos out there. Celebrated my Uncle's birthday and he said he wanted to go to a buffet in town and of course I'm going to accommodate. Saw this place was new and just opened, taking over where Cracker and Barrel was. Upon entering the place was clean. Still brand new vibes. We paid and then sat down. I was really disappointed with my experience at Captain Buffet. The service was poor from the moment we arrived, and unfortunately the food situation didn't improve things. Many of the trays were empty and not being refilled regularly. We had to repeatedly ask for more crab legs, and even then it took quite a while before anything was brought out. A lot of items also had "Dinner Only" signs on them even though we were there during dinner hours (around 7pm), which was confusing and frustrating. The food itself was very inconsistent. Many dishes were extremely spicy, while others had almost no flavor at all. On top of that, several common buffet items you'd expect to see were missing entirely, like sweet and sour chicken or crab and cream cheese wontons. Another thing that stood out was seeing the Asian staff eating fresh hot food from the back while customers waited for the buffet trays to be refilled. Meanwhile, the Hispanic employees were taking food directly from the buffet as their lunch meals. Why wasn't the Hispanic staff invited to eat with the Asian staff? It was clearly noticeable and super disturbing. Overall, the experience felt unorganized and poorly managed. Between the lack of refills, confusing signage, and inconsistent food quality, this is not a place I would return to. I really want to give this place a chance. I met up with some friends for dinner. You pay when you first get in. There is 5% service charge added to the check. The drinks are included. They have Pepsi but no coke. I opted for their unsweetened ice tea. This place seems to have a variety of food choices. I was trying to avoid the seafood just in case. They have sushi and a lot of staple Chinese dishes, coconut shrimp, Beijing beef, kung pao chicken, etc. Everything felt very salty to me. Surprisingly, their homemade pizza was good. The staff was nice, and I saw them restocking food and dishes. They have an ice cream freezer, which includes little cups of ice cream; some are fat free but not sugar free. Updating my review from my experience on Valentine's Day (February 14th). While I know it was a busy day, there was no excuse in us being seated at a table that was already given to another family. We asked for a high chair multiple times, and it was never brought to us. My husband had to go to the back and grab it himself. The food was not refilled timely. And, the bathrooms were the absolute worst. I let the staff know that the hand soap in the women's restroom was empty. They never sent anyone to replace it. Imagine all those diners walking around with hands not properly washed at a buffet let alone the staff. We got there at 5:30, there was no wait. (Photos taken at 5:30-5:40). By 6:15, there was a long line to pay & long line to be seated. The place was packed and tables all full. Maybe because of new opening hype. $26.99. Wed dinner. You pay when you enter and children pay based on their height. I am not a fan of this paying when you enter because how do you know how much to tip? There is no incentive for good service. Luckily I can say that service was great and every few minutes someone came by to take the finished plate. So there was no problem there! Soda is included, Pepsi products. You fill your drink yourself. Hibachi grill: you pick your noodle quantity, meat, veggies and then pass the plate to the person through the window and tell them spicy or not and yes or not to garlic. the meat slices were cut larger and thicker and thus cooked longer. One of my party members described it as: you need really strong teeth to chew it. Seafood: Snails were large which we liked. Typically they aren't so large. There was crawfish as well. Snow crab. Fried calamari was good size and nicely fried. Restock was good for all seafood. Soup options: miso soup, hot and sour soup. They were ok. The place is huge, and even when it pretty much immediately became packed there was no shortage of tables for people to sit at. It was also clean, which is great. The staff seemed to be on it the entire time I was there: No plates I finished stayed at the table for long, the staff was friendly and always moving. The food itself is fine. It's a pretty standard-issue buffet. Nothing was bad, but there wasn't anything that was knock-your-socks-off amazing either (Granted, I didn't get the chance to check out the grilled-to-order food section). But as you sit down with your plates it becomes apparent that this is going to an ordeal. The crabs are a labor of love as you try to get a good bite. Trying is the word. We even had to ask to restock because nothing was being brought out. The workers stared us down because we had asked when the restock would happen since there was no food available. We went there last week because I just want to try it. When we got in the cashier told me they just opened 6 months, so brand new. We go to the steam table. We can see that they don't have huge selection but pretty decent. The Soda fountain available outside pretty helpful so you don't need to wait for waitreess to refil your drink. The food is decent..one thing I noticed, the food taste needs more flasvor. The clam sauce need more taste, a bit plain..also the soup Hot and sour Soup needs more flavor. Some food options were good. King Crab legs were almost impossible to get into even with crab crackers. I loved the two types of muscle preparations. Shrimp were okay. Sushi was not so good. Dining room was clean. Food trays were watched for need of refilling. Empty diner plates were cleared away quickly. It was a mid week night and they were not very busy. Lots of food choices that we didn't try. I don't think my husband would agree to go back. Neither of us ate enough food to cover the meal price. Both of us came away disappointed.
