Stopped in yesterday for some fried rice to use as a base for some seared sirloin in Korean sauce. I was greeted by a pleasant staff person momentarily who took my order for shrimp, ham and chicken fried rice for $13.50 per quart. She said about 10 minutes and my order was up in 5. Drove home to prepare the sirloin and poured it over the rice and it was delicious! Saw plenty of shrimp but not much ham or chicken and only used half the container for two people. Didn't think to take a photo until after we scarfed dinner, but I will return to try other dishes! read more

Ordering was a breeze service was ok But the food shrimp fried rice was terribly bland minimal amount of shrimp & it was mushy like it was under the heat way too long The rice had no egg or any other ingredients it was just plain bland rice I also ordered egg rolls & crab rangoon & I was not given enough plum sauce when i asked for more I was told it was already in the bag!! *COVID19 Edition* Throughout the pandemic, we've been trying all different kinds of restaurants and have yet to find a Chinese restaurant place that we really loved. This restaurant was no exception. The food itself tasted mostly fresh (I appreciated that the wonton soup wasn't oily), but mostly just lazily thrown together. The almond chicken was covered in breading and fried. The beef and broccoli was smothered in brown sauce. By the end of the meal, we just hadn't enjoyed anything that we were eating. As Chinese takeouts go, it was fine. I would give it 3.5 stars, but I'm rounding down because Yelp doesn't do half stars. It was nothing special, and I don't intend to go back. On the plus side, their COVID19 precautions seemed legit, so that works for me. read more

Worse Chinese food! Ordered Chicken Szechuan LoMein & Garlic Beef and both stated "Hot & Spicy" but there was absolutely zero spicy!! No garlic either! LoMein was sort of sweet so had to drown it in soy sauce to get some flavor. Cook needs to take lessons in spicy apparently. New to the area and now cannot figure out how this place gets so many 5 stars. Oh BTW the egg rolls tasted like they cooked them hours early, nothing but mush. read more

I was hesitant of this place at first because of the reviews, but gave it a shot and am very pleased! I got the almond chicken combination and it was excellent! The chicken was very tender with great tasting gravy (without being too heavy) and the rice had a nice subtle flavor. This place by far has the best bang for your buck in the area and gets the job done. read more

If your looking for a Cantonese style Chinese Restaurant that serves classic Americanized fare, then you will love Canton China to no end. This place really takes me back to the 1980s, when Cantonese style food was far more commonplace in Southeast Lower Michigan. Unlike other Chinese restaurants in the area, the portions at this place are very generous to say the least. You receive a lot of bang for your buck at this place. That said, you will more than likely take a lot of it home with you that's leftover. I ordered Chicken with Snow Peas, which is served in a white sauce that is loaded with cornstarch surrey. I can remember neighbors from Hong Kong used to cook like this at the restaurant they owned. The bad part is when you place it in the refrigerator overnight, it will turn into a white gummy substance. However, it's nothing be afraid of. Moreover, the Egg Drop Soup that I had, also used a lot of cornstarch, which reminded me of dinning out in the 1980s. Next time I will try their Won Ton Soup and see how it compares. Meanwhile, you have to love the fact this place serves egg rolls that use real bean sprouts. This practice has all but vanished from the local scene. So if you're looking for some very good, traditional Americanized Chinese food that we all grew up on as a kid in the Midwest, then Canton China is the place to go. I have been looking for a really good American-style Chinese restaurant here on the westside, and was encouraged by the reviews. I started with the Egg Drop Soup and felt it tasted of cornstarch more than anything else. Tried some of my husband's hot and sour. It wasn't bad. I don't think I'd order it though. Bean sprout egg rolls were good. They tasted fresh and the sprouts themselves were still crunchy. I ordered the Almond Boneless Chicken. Despite the name, it did not appear to come with any almonds. It was served on a bed of lettuce, which I like as an accompaniment for this dish. The sauce was served on the side, which was also good because the breading on the chicken was very crispy. Unfortunately, the sauce was a weird gloppy yellow (as you can see from my picture below). The waitress saw my face and offered to bring some brown gravy. It was better, and more what I expected from this dish. I was unhappy with the overall lack of seasoning with the dish, finding it rather bland. My husband ordered the Sesame Chicken, which I liked better. It had a bit of spice, but was rather one-note, tasting strongly of hoisin sauce. I wouldn't order it. This was my first time ordering food there, and granted they give you a lot of food for the money, but all three of the entrees I ordered (General Tso chicken, Sesame chicken and House special Mei fun) had absolutely NO flavor and the chicken was overcooked. The general chicken was supposed to be medium spicy - no spice whatsoever and tasted like watered down ketchup. The sesame chicken was bland, and there was NO curry or spices in the mei fun. When I ordered General Chicken the young lady said it had broccoli in it, which I really like, but there was none. The cost was over $13 and was not made correctly. Thank goodness for this place! We moved to Wayne 18 months ago and FINALLY found good Chinese food! Hot and sour soup: not bad but not a lot of flavor. I added a few drops of hot mustard and it was better Egg rolls: yes please, I will take four more to go! Crispy but not greasy. Yum!! Generals chicken: one of the best we have had. Not greasy like a lot of places. And real chicken (some places serve chicken that looks and feels like it was frozen breaded chicken ball) Among chicken: pretty darn good. I've been here twice now, and both times I loved the food. I got the sesame chicken combo and the sweet and sour combo. It comes with an egg roll and my total is always about $14. That's a great price for food that I eat over the course of 2 days. On the second day I usually share with my husband and we're both full for lunch. Been living in canton for 36 years and have used this restaurant a lot over the years and always loved it. We quit going a few years ago after they changed hands again because the quality was not the same. We decided to try it again recently and were pleasantly surprised, I would have given it a five star but can't believe this restaurant is still not open to the public and when you walk in they are still masked to the gills with a barricade and the worker was still standing back about 10 feet. We were prepared to be very forgiving. After all, it was Christmas, it was snowing, and when we first arrived the place was packed with both diners and take-out patrons and the servers were running around like chickens with their heads cut off. So, we were not immediately dissuaded by two or three un-bussed tables, etc., etc. Then the food started arriving, first the vegetable soup which tasted of mildew. The main courses were no more appetizing. I had some kind of szechuan chicken which was bland (bland szechuan?) except it had that same mildew taste, my wife had vegetable curry, and our son had chicken lo mein. This must be the first time I've ever seen my fifteen-year-old son decline taking leftovers home. I must say the flavors were genuine in one respect; I was reminded of some of the worst restaurants I experienced in Shenzhen and Dongguan 25 years ago, before the influx of money prompted rising standards. Oh, and 60 minutes later after the crowd had thinned quite considerably, every empty table remained un-bussed, even the ones that were un-bussed when we arrived. I can only imagine the place was initially packed due to a lack of competition in that particular neighborhood on a snowy Christmas day. This is quite possibly the worst Chinese food imaginable. I ordered the Hunan Beef HOT, Szechuan Shrimp HOT, Egg Rolls, and Crabmeat Rangoons. About the onlty difference between the two dishes was the protein (shrimp vs. Beef). The Rangoons had almost not filling, they didn't include any hot mustard, the plum sauce is so thin it's like water, the Eggrolls were limp and bland. The main courses were not as good as anything, and I mean anything you might find in a can or frozen food section of the supermarket. If this is HOT then mild must be as bland as tissue paper, because there was ZERO heat, ZERO spice, ZERO taste in EITHER entree. We ate because we were hungry, but threw the leftovers out as inedible. Lousy, Lousy, Lousy... Spend your dollars elsewhere since this place doesn't have the talent, skill, or knowledge to serve even marginal food. read more

Drove by this place forever and I have visited most of the other Chinese restaurants in the area including the buffet restaurant next door. We went on a Saturday and it was very quiet. The decor and ambience is very understated but the food made up for what lacked. We had the Hawaiian Chicken at the advise of a customer and it was tasty. Super crunchy battered chicken fillet served in a slightly sweet thin glaze with pineapples ( not as sweet or as thick as sweet & sour chicken ). We loved it! Upgraded to shrimp fried rice which had a nice smoky flavor with huge shrimp (this is my hubby's favorite)'. We ordered the Cashew Beef, this was full of Chinese veggies, cashews and beef but nothing special. They used canned mushrooms which I didn't like but that was minor. We loved the homemade egg rolls made with bean sprouts and the chunky almond cookies and hot tea. Great value and portions. If you follow my post you know that service is really important to me. I liked their staff... Friendly but not phony, professional but not snobby, attentive but not annoying... Overall I liked the food, the value and the staff! We will drop by again! Use to it having only green onions ands onions this was like a veggie mixed with beef. Was good flavor but not a big fan of water chestnuts or mushrooms. Husband had chicken lo mein. Thin noodles. Genuinely pleasant, not obnoxious, they know the menu and the restaurant well. They sling jibes with the regulars, have fun and move the food. Decor: Hideous, endearing and humorous. Decorated decades before the introduction of P.F. Changs slick sophistication, Canton China sets the bar for old school Chinese kitsch, replete with yards of off blue Formica, matching seashell seat backs and carpeting rejected from the casino. Curiously missing is the obligatory fish tank found in the front of most Chinese restaurants. Menu: Typical for the Genre. Menu is arranged with subheadings for chicken, beef, pork etc. There is a small bar in the front. Price:Cheap, and again typical for the genre. Food: Hot, tasty and well executed. Canton China has the large portion sizes people expect from this type of Chinese restaurant. A pleasant surprise is the complimentary sugar cookie for dessert in addition to the fortune cookie, a subtle and appreciated nod to the fact that fortune cookies don't taste good. Crowd: An eclectic mix of white collar types, elderly couples, teens and families looking for a cheap meal. Visiting Canton China leaves one with the impression of having "discovered" something special that maybe not everyone knows about. Move this restaurant to Ann Arbor or Royal Oak and it would be in serious danger of being overrun by hipsters. Bathrooms: Clean enough to use if the situation warranted it. The charm and personality of the restaurant somewhat make up for the sense of danger one feels using the bathroom. What exotic foreign diseases might lurk in such a lair? Overall: Highly recommended, Chinese restaurants have a tendency to be hit or miss. Canton China has just the right mix of trashiness, charm, and charisma packaged in a what may just be an opium den populated with senior citizens. read more
