This is a great little Chinese restaurant. This is the kind of restaurant that you go to on a night where you're tired. You're not in the mood an/or you just don't have the energy to cook for yourself, so you go in search of an old friend. That friend is named China Gate. This restaurant has all of the Chinese take-out classics that you're used to seeing, but does them very very well. I tend to order the wonton soup and egg roll most often for a light dinner, but I've also really enjoyed their beef/chicken and broccoli. A lot of times, Chinese take out restaurants feel like they're phoning it in. Not China Gate. The food tastes nice and fresh, and it doesn't feel super heavy like you've made a terrible mistake eating it. Instead it tastes pretty darn fresh and made with quality ingredients. I've been ordering from this place since it first opened, more than 30 years ago. Sadly, the food quality is nothing like it used to be. I recently ordered two combo meals. The first thing I noticed was the portion size was noticeably smaller than it ever has been, almost by half. The flavor was decent, but not any better than the average Chinese takeout. The egg rolls were actually some of the worst I've had anywhere - the filling was like pureed mush, as if it was put through a food processor. I can't say for certain if this decline started after the original owners sold it and retired or not. With so many other options in the area for Chinese food, China Gate is no longer at the top. read more

I had always enjoyed this place and will continue to get carry-out, but their policy on a single soft drink refill (very small serving!) is ridiculous and completely contrary to local custom. It deters me from using the dining area. For now until this policy changes, it's cash and carry for me. read more

My first experience was not good at all. Ordered almond chicken. I have never had it and anywhere without the gravy on it and almonds until now. Freezer burnt dry hammered flat something I say something because there was no flavor at all. Microwave will do that. I wish I have read Bradlee's review before I ordered. The General Taos Chicken used to be the best around. Now, the sauce is so sweet you'll need to visit a dentist after eating it. I ordered it Hot, and I think they thought I meant Sweeter. It was absolutely horrible. The rice was bland and dry as well. The only redeeming thing was the egg roll, but I am totally disappointed. Located in a strip mall which most wouldn't notice the place. This is my first time ordering from them. I decided to try to New style chicken Lo mein. It was definitely tasty and like description the noodles are fairly soft. It says it's soft egg noodles stir-fried with mixed vegetables (bean sprouts, carrots, Napa cabbage, bok choy, and celery all thinly sliced). The chicken was cut up in small pieces definitely not a ton of chicken in the dish. Large is a very decent size! Lots of noodles!!! It filled my Pyrex 6 cup dish. Overall pretty good. read more

Huge portions, friendly employees and hot tea while you wait. The lunch sizes are huge in themselves, and the dinners are enough to have a second meal the following day. You really don't have to go to The other side of the world in China to enjoy the best Chinese foods. Large portions at very reasonable prices. The only draw back is their only Carry-out. This place is the real family owned and operated since 1990. We drive pass several Chinese restaurants just to get here from Livonia. One lady was picking up an order from Ann Arbor.The restaurant is Westland. Lucky them! My favorite is the General szechaun chicken. Consist of white meat, lightly wok sautéed of ginger, garlic, soy sauce, rice vinegar and whatever else the Chinese Gods said to do This is designed to make your mouth water and your stomach purr. Served with Medium rice. The combination comes with chicken rice. My wife ordered a side of crab Rangoon with a small cup of hot mustard. We ordered a side of pork fried rice and will get at least two dinners and some light snacking for two people over two days. Don't count the calories when you eat it just step back , Enjoy life and let your taste buds tell you that you did the right thing! All diners are served with plum sauce. If I rate this lower I would! I'm sorry if they lose business but I can't get my money back and they close really early. A coworker recently recommended this place so I thought I would try it out because the prices are really good. Well, you get what you pay for! I ordered the shrimp Lo Mein. Usually this is a safe dish when trying out a new Chinese place. What I received was nowhere near Lo Mein! I got boiled Ramen noodles drowned in some white sauce! They serve generous portions. The service was adequate. The fried rice was ok. The fried shrimp was not cooked in fresh oil; the oil was bad and smelled burnt. The small shrimp was difficult to find in the batter and was over- cooked. They do not have wor won ton soup, and their simple won ton soup was just that - very simple. read more

We've had such bad luck trying to find good Chinese that wasn't far away! This place is a hidden gem, and we will definitely be back. We ordered a wide variety of things, and absolutely everything from the soup to the vegetarian stir fry was flavorful, fresh, and NOT greasy. The veggie stir fry was truly unbelievable, as I am often disappointed by carry-out veggie options. I ate the entire pint of this stuff. Both the egg drop and hot and sour soups were deliciously eggy and rich. We also ordered the moo shu pork, chicken chop suey, and veggie stir-fry, all of which were beautifully sauced, perfectly cooked, full of meat and veggies and tasted delicious. I've been eating at China Gate since it opened. Full disclosure - At that time the owners were our next door neighbors and we consider them family. That being said you can make your own decision regarding the objectivity of this review but many other reviewers agree with me. This family owned and operated restaurant has been dishing up large portions of great food for almost 30 years. Located in a small strip mall north of Ford Road it can be easy to miss so use your GPS. The quality has remained consistent and the prices fair which contributes to China Gate's popularity. We enjoy and recommend the Lo Mein, Moo Shoo Pork, Chicken Fried Rice, Crab Rangoon and Eggrolls and Orange Chicken and have enjoyed many others. My second ex-wife use to own a Chinese restaurant made old world tastes so I know authentic Chinese food. with that said, I talk about The China Gate. Now the China Gate has very very good food. HUGE portions for a take out. I got the Beef Lo Mein, Beef rolls, fried rice and Egg Drop Soup. The Lo Mein is very good. Very tasty and full of veggies and meat. Not quite right on the noodles, but that a minor point. The important thing it is very good and well worth going after. The egg drop soup is good. I now how can you mess that up, but i have actually been to places that do. This place had a small that makes many places large seem small. It was great!!! My rice was fantastic. We all know those magical boxes that hold more than it looks. This box was overflowing. Have no idea how they did that. But it was great and so glad that I ordered it. The "egg rolls" or beef rolls as they should be called were very good. Full of beef and great seasonings. Over all the food was fantastic. This is one place that people should try and once they do I can now see why they have regulars. The people were friendly. About 25 of us ordered carryout last Friday. For most of us it was the first time eating there. I never heard one negative comment from anyone! We were all amazed with the quality & quantity of the food! There were quite a few orders for "Crispy Chicken" which came with a sweet plum-like dipping sauce. Normally I don't like sweet on my chicken, but it was awesome! The quality of the chicken was incredible, and each piece was a three-biter! The combo came with an egg roll that was pretty good, and pork fried rice that was good, but could have used some more veggies. Other than that, this place is a "must try". So I have been going to numerous Chinese places in the area to see which one is the best. I'm sorry to say this, but it is one of the worst. I was really excited after I read the reviews but it just did not taste good. Everyone I encountered there was super friendly. I could tell the chicken itself tasted good but the garlic "sauce" which was more goop than sauce, was not good. It just tasted like oil. I gave it two stars bc the staff was nice, my boyfriend like his general tsos and the chicken fried rice was decent.
