Beef with black beans had such great flavor, meat was tender and the vegetables had the perfect bite to them. The orange chicken had a great crispiness to it and the perfect amount of sauce. There wasn't an over abundance of sauce like you see in many places. Fried rice was fresh. Hot and sour soup had great flavor. My kids loved the steamed dumplings. I will definitely come back. It has been a long time since I last visited. I saw fellow Yelper Al P just recently visited which prompted me to visit again. Great Shanghainese food! I started with the Shanghainese wonton soup followed by the shredded pork with garlic sauce (shredded pork, bamboo shoots, black mushroom and jalapeño) and the bok choy with Chinese mushrooms. Small family run Chinese restaurant. It's difficult to find GOOD Chinese in metro Detroit . Came across Best Chinese on Yelp and decided to give it a try. Ordered the General Tso dinner combo. If you're looking for some very delicious American and Traditional Chinese food from a compact eatery, which offers an ample menu from both venues, then you will love Best China located in the northeast part Canton Township. Two of my Chinese friends highly recommended this place, and I am glad that I finally decided to stop in for dinner with a friend of mine. While this restaurant is not spacious by any stretch of the imagination, it gives you a warm, cozy feeling. For the past month, I have been craving Moo Shu Shrimp and I decided to order some while at the Best China from the American menu. The waitress did an outstanding job taking our orders, and they were out of the kitchen in less than 15 minutes. I have to say that I am really impressed with the large potions that were served. However, my only complaint is that the pancakes for the moo shu were too thin, and would tear very easily. Next time, I am going to order extra pancakes and double them up. Other than that, it was a great meal. Moo shu is a dish of northern Chinese origin, originating from Shandong province along the coast. "It invariably contains egg, whose yellow color is reminiscent of blossoms of the osmanthus tree, after which the dish is named after." It made its debut in America in the mid-1960s, at Chinese restaurants on the East Coast in New York, as the first non-Cantonese dish to be served at in America. The really nice part about the Chinese menu at Best China, is that all of the entrées are listed in Chinese and English. The Shanghai Wonton Soup had Zero Flavor in the broth with mushy tasteless wonton. The Beef and Broccoli was very good , rice that came with it Bland zero flavor. I read this place had good Shanghai and Beijing style food. I thought zhajiangmian (炸酱面） would be a good test meal, especially when i saw it was #1 on the menu. I've had Best China bookmarked for years, taking note of those dishes that looked interesting. I am partial to duck so that was the first item that I ordered. I was also intrigued by the deep-fried bean curd with pork; it is something that was unfamiliar to me. When I pulled up to the strip mall, I was dismayed by the empty lot - the economic aftermath of COVID. The restaurant was only set up for pick-up. The small entryway was re-fashioned into a small take-out window. You give your name and are handed your food so that you can quickly be on your way. The duck and pork were similarly flavored. The half-duck was chopped to almost bite-sized pieces and served with a large container of sauce. The fried tofu was so soft that it almost melted in my mouth. The pork belly was firm; I loved the flavors so much that I plan to ask my dad for his thoughts on a recipe. My dad has a very developed palate and an extensive recipe repertory that he would likely know the ingredients. Now, I need to go through the rest of the menu for other food treasures. read more

Nothing has changed since my previous review. Best China is still the best Chinese food you'll likely ever have in Michigan (or elsewhere, for that matter). Service is always phenomenal, and I deeply appreciate that the staff gives outstanding suggestions of new dishes for us to try. Tonight we had my all-time favorite here--green beans and potatoes. It's simple, yet SOOOOOO incredibly delicious. Salty with a hint of sweetness, and each potato is perfectly cooked and evenly coated in the deliciousness. I refer to this dish as Chinese crack because, for me, it's addictive. I crave this dish! We also ordered shredded pork with celery and dry tofu, which is served in a light broth-flavored sauce. I wasn't sure about this until I tasted it because I'm not a tofu fan, but this didn't taste like tofu. It's excellent with rice because the rice soaks up the scrumptious sauce. My husband wanted to order beef with cumin, which is his favorite here, but that will have to wait until next time, if we don't order something else we've never tried before. You just can't go wrong! I want to make those of you aware that I have only made one order from here via Uber Eats delivery. Having food delivered and having it prepared for you fresh can most certainly affect the quality of the meal, so I will make an effort to try this restaurant in person at my earliest convenience and provide an updated review, as it appears there is a discrepancy between what I ate and what many others experienced. Having said that, I remember ordering three items (chicken chop suey, crab rangoon and fried shrimp). The rangoon and shrimp were decent to say the least, but I really have to say I will never ever order anything on a Chinese takeout menu called "chop suey" again. The issue here wasn't so much the lack of freshness, it was poor execution and bad ingredients. Even if I had consumed this right after it was prepared, the vegetables were extremely lacking in natural flavor, and were almost entirely coated in a clear goop. From having cooked with this ingredient before, I can say for certain this nasty substance was concocted by adding too much cornstarch during the cooking process. It didn't help that the chicken was bland and chewy as well. It was quite disgusting and I couldn't believe they thought it was okay to serve this to me. When I come back I will try something more traditional or safe to get a better idea of what this place has to offer. Best China is close to my house so I want to know I can rely on them in the future when I have a craving for some Chinese. At the very least the other items I ate were edible. read more

The food was hot and ready for our takeout order. We had high expectations based on all the great reviews. We have been looking for a great place close to our house! There were so many raves about the zha zhang pork noodles I was convinced we should order 2 for the family. They were not what I expected. The noodles were well made, but the dish consists of only noodles, ground pork, and sauce. It was a unique and complex flavor, but I missed veg and tidbits like Lo mein. The sauce was a bit on the spicy side for the kids. The container they were served in was nice quality, reheatable, and didn't leak, but was about half the size of what we are accustomed to at our usual Chinese place in Livonia. The shrimp in lobster sauce was a huge disappointment. I've never had this dish where it wasn't in a creamy addictive sauce. This was a very bland sauce that almost seemed like a nearly flavorless base of muted egg drop soup. The shrimp were strong flavored, and not on a good way, and there was an equal amount of fake crab in there, along with peas and carrots, which was all a surprise. It was like no shrimp in lobster sauce I ever had. Sadly no one really enjoyed it very much. These are the tears I'm shedding for the shrimp in lobster sauce I was so hungry for that never was .,;:,;.;,,",;.: The Mongolian beef was another surprise. It was unlike any I ever had, full of all different veggies and shoots. It was liked ok by everyone, but just as a palatable option as opposed to raves. It was unexceptional. I wish Yelp allowed ratings in half star increments, because I would rate Best China 3.5. However, most of the food we ordered was so good that I'm rounding it up to 4. This is a good place to go for authentic Shanghai cuisine. This was my first time back to this restaurant in maybe almost 10 years, so I wasn't sure if it would still be good. I think the portion sizes have shrunk, but the taste is definitely still there. Based on what we've ordered, my favorite dishes here are the scallion pancakes and the Shanghai style stir-fried noodles. The pancakes are crispy on the outside and don't have big chunks of scallions like others I've had elsewhere - they have just enough to add the flavor. The noodles are a little oily and the portion was small, but it was very tasty. On this visit, we also got seafood pan fried noodles (Hong Kong/Cantonese style) which was crispy, fresh, delicious, and didn't have too much MSG. We also got braised duck as an appetizer - it's flavored with a sweet soy sauce and was really good. Finally, we got a dish with napa cabbage and bean curds, which was severely overcooked and mushy. We arrived late (around 1:45 p.m.), so we were the only ones there. The food came out pretty quickly and our primary waitress who took our order was very nice and helpful. However, there was another waitress who brought out some of our food and had a bad attitude when we asked for chili oil and extra napkins. She gave us dirty looks when we asked, and then when she brought the stuff to us, snidely asked if we wanted anything else. Overall, it was a good meal and I recommend eating here. read more

Update: tried Best China again. I ordered the Shrimp in Lobster Sauce. It was really good - but very salty. It was a strange dish because it was soupy / goupy - almost like a congee - but not quite enough that it felt good putting it on the white rice that came with it. So although generous with shrimp and lobster, and tasty, it was tough to eat. The "crab cheese" that came with it was good, not great. They were tough to the point where my kids couldn't eat/chew them, but the flavor was good for the adults who have bigger, stronger teeth. The best surprise of the meal for me was the sweet and sour pork - although it's never a dish I would order for myself, we ordered it for the kids and they loved it, and I stole a few bites and enjoyed it as well. The fried rice that came with it was really good, especially as a side dish. I'm still waiting to be shocked by awesomeness from this place, given its credentials and ratings, but it hasn't happened yet. I'll keep trying. read more

We stopped at Best China for dinner on our way to Historic Presentation Night at the Yankee Air Museum. As we entered, I noticed a smaller-sized dining area with eight tables. I also noticed that the customers at that time appeared to be mostly Chinese or Asian, definitely a good sign. There were a few open tables so we were seated immediately. As usual, we had bookmarked Best China based on its Yelp reviews and photos, so we had some idea of what we would like to try when we walked in. With some ethnic restaurants, I have a favorite dish that I try first at a new place. For example, at Thai restaurants, I first try their Red or Green Curry before exploring the rest of their menu if I like the curry. Greek-Gyro; Mexican-Tamale; etc. For Chinese restaurants, I like Pan-Fried Dumplings (my preference is for them to be pan fried and then steamed - see picture by Yelper Wally S) that are usually listed as an appetizer. At Best China, an order comes with eight pieces and they are tasty but slightly crispy. Of course, some people even like deep-fried dumplings, but I was raised differently. For our entrees, my wife ordered what we learned was Tri-Color Shrimp based on another Yelper's photo (it would be a big help to your fellow Yelpers if everyone would add a name or description to their photos). She looked over the menu but couldn't find it, so she just showed our server the picture and problem solved. It was excellent and had a unique taste. Meanwhile, I was studying the menu and was struggling with the item names because many were not descriptive enough for my brain. Our server was very patient in explaining items on the menu and more or less pulled out of me what I might like; I ended up ordering what I'll call Shrimp and Vegetables. It turned out to have a familiar mild flavor and I thoroughly enjoyed it. What we both liked was that the dishes were not too salty as is the case with many Chinese restaurants. My take is that Best China has some items that would be mostly familiar to the American palate and are probably standard at most Americanized Chinese restaurants. Then there are many less familiar (more authentic?) dishes like the Tri Color Shrimp that both of us really liked. Give them a try and don't be afraid to ask some questions about the menu choices...or just show the Yelp photo for what you want to order. Oh, and clean restrooms! read more

This is a gem of a find - both in that you wouldn't know it from the name (since it sounds like a generic takeout place with some superlatives), and that its location is kind of unassuming. This is not a generic Chinese takeout place, although they do have that menu and it is pretty good still. This is an authentic Shanghainese restaurant. As a Cantonese person, I don't know their menu that well. But what I do know of, it is really really good. Some top picks to try: - Cumin Beef - Salt pepper anything - Cantonese style chow mein noodles - either chicken or with seafood - Pickled veggie with pork, in soup or over rice - Wonton noodle soup - Pork with string beans or eggplant Most anything is good on the menu, and their menu is HUGE. One caveat is that sometimes it is possible to get the wrong item than you ordered. The restaurant is small: 6 tables for four and 2 tables for six. If there is a wait, staff will ask if you are OK with community seating (for only the table for 6 table). This is not really a place to catch up with old friends and talk for hours after your meal. There is an American menu and a Shanghai menu. We ordered three dishes from the Shanghai menu because why eat General Tso's Chicken, Pork Chop Suey, and Beef with Broccoli when you can eat Eggplant with Garlic Sauce, Spicy Seafood Soup Noodle, and Spicy Salt Squid?!?! The prices were average. The meal comes with white rice. The serving sizes were reasonable. Most of the negative reviews are for the American menu, which I have never tried or have any interest in trying. Annette was right. I have fallen behind on my reviews. How have I not reviewed my favorite authentic Chinese restaurant? First, don't order off the "Americanized" menu. It looks like a placemat and is there because, well, there is a certain subset of the population that must order Almond Boneless Chicken at every Chinese restaurant. I'm a fan of Cantonese food, but this is not the place. Go for the Chinese menu. I have two favorites that I order all of the tine. The Zha Jaing noodles are simply amazing. I mean amazing. The pork based sauce is perfectly balanced and addicting. The eggplant in garlic sauce is also fantastic. I'm not an eggplant fan and yet, can't get enough. I have added other dishes, the cumin beef is very good. I encourage you all to try authentic Shanghai food. I love Chinese but I had yet to find a place that really knocks me off my feet around town. I have one that I go to just because we've been going there since I was little and while it's not very good it's familiar. But the time had come for me to really buckle down and find something kick ass and thanks to Yelp, I found Best China. And it's pretty much the bomb. Yes, it's in a strip mall. And yes, it's next door to a dance studio where skinny young girls in leggings waiting for their rides will make you feel bad about yourself as you walk in ready to devour plate upon plate of deliciousness. Ignore them. Keep walking and head on in and great ready for greatness. When you sit down they're likely to give you one menu, the English menu. It's got all the standards and they're gonna be good. Nay, great. But ask them for their Chinese menu and branch out a bit. You'll be happy you did. My fella and I were starving so we ordered a few appetizer plates and an entree each. It was A LOT of food. From the English menu we ordered crab rangoon (what can I say? I'm a sucker for cream cheese) and the pan seared dumplings. I wanted the Schezuan style dumplings that everyone raves about on here but our waiter informed me they weren't serving them that night. DRAT. However, the regular dumplings are delicious as well. Stuffed with a really flavorful pork and seared with a nice crunch. I agree with others who said that it wasn't greasy despite being fried. Super good. For my entree I ordered off the Chinese menu and got the pork on pan fried noodles. It came with some bok choy and delicious wild mushrooms served on a bed of noodles that were crispy around the edges and nice and soft with a delicious broth on the inside. I highly recommend. My fella ordered a spicy tofu dish (the name escapes me) which was also really delicious and had a nice kick to it (although he ordered it medium heat so me and my tender tongue could try some). We had loads of leftovers to take home and it didn't set us back a ton of dough. Awesome! In the restaurant folks poured in for take out. Near our table families were eating together, ordering plate after plate of food. Many of them were either related to or good friends of the owners since the adorable little children kept running around and back into the kitchen. I actually love seeing that because it endears the owners to me to see a family operation. Our waiter was incredibly good natured and answered our questions with ease and joked around with us a bit regarding our massive order. Again, endearing. I like these folks. I like their food. I have tried this place about 4-5 times over the last few years and each time I get excited by the possibilities and disappointed by the flavors and taste. I love Asian food- real Asian food and am very adventurous when it comes to food. I have ordered from here off the "American" menu and the Chinese menu. The only thing consistent is dull flavor, poor quality, the oiliness of the dishes and the fact that every time I try to order they are out of something - usually more than one thing- I want to order. Best China used to be great back before they reopened but prices keep rising and portion size keeps getting smaller. Shrimp in the dishes are maybe a quarter of the size with only a couple and portion size is now half. Taste is not as flavorful. I used to get the same items I am now being charged $30 for $17. This place is a whole in the wall kind of place. Small joint hidden beside the corner of a gas station on Warren and lily road junction. They had the best duck dish which is kind of out of stock every single day I call to order at late in the evening. They are in high demand. Their garlic eggplant dish is one of the favorites of me and my husband. Their poached fish is so so good and I think one of their expensive dishes. This place is a gem.
