soup dumplings
Michael T.

Had really high expectations but sadly this restaurant did not meet them. I got the Pork with Garlic Sauce (鱼香肉丝), beef short ribs, soup dumplings, and a dessert. These were all recommended. The flavor was off for all of them. The pork with garlic sauce was way too sweet for my liking. He could taste the added sugar. There was way too much sauce and it made the dish very thick. The beef short ribs were not special in any way, were pretty tough to chew, and did not really have much flavor. I would rather get Korean Kalbi instead. The soup dumplings were okay, but you could tell the skin was not homemade, or if it was, it was pretty thick and did not have the mouth-feel as some other restaurants that specialize in soup dumplings. I also got a coconut dessert putting which was okay for the price. It was busy on a weekday evening. Service was attentive for a takeout order. However I am very hesitant to try this place again.

Warm, cozy family restaurant that provides authentic Chinese food. We all really enjoyed the Shanghai noodles. The noodles were flavorful and a great portion size that the whole table could share. All the dim sum that we had had a good amount of filling. The soup dumplings was a hit for our table. It was the perfect size to bite in and the soup broth was delicious. We also go to watch the chef make the dough for the dumpling. It's great that they make the dough fresh from this restaurant. Our server was friendly and nice. I definitely would recommend this spot for some dim sum or Chinese food.

Absolutely love this place. The staff is great and accommodating, outside of the food which is superb. Favorites are the sticky rice shumai, har gow, spicy wontons, green onion pancakes and griddle cooked green beans. Worth the drive across the border for authentic dumplings & dim sum which I cannot find in the US!

So on the recommendation of a friend, I went for dim sum to Shanghai Bistro on Wyandotte West. I love dim sum but never seem to find time to eat it. Well, today was going to be the day I either enjoyed myself, or wished I had gone for bubble tea down the street. The first thing I noticed was one of the chefs by the front door. sitting behind a Plexiglas shield and making some kind of dumplings. Well, that's encouraging, I thought. The inside was clean and simple, the Formica school of Asian restaurant interior design. Now, I'm not saying a restaurant full of Asian diners is a guarantee of quality, but, seeing a restaurant full of Asian diners always gives me a confidence boost that I chose the right place. I got four items, siu mai, har gow, crab and pork soup dumplings, and curry cuttlefish. Making up for lost time, as it were. Everything arrived at once, and was all nice and steamy hot. The siu mai were tasty, especially after being dipped in the provided chili oil. Har gow need a thin enough wrapper to be enjoyable and not too chewy, and these were perfect. The soup dumplings were a disappointment, buit only because some had broken at the table. I'll take responsibilty for one at most, but...However, the ones that were intact were a slurpable delighful dumpling. The curry cuttlefish were cooked to perfection, not at all too chewy, nice and tender. The curry was spicier than all the previous versions of this I've had, but not super spicy. I enjoyed it. There was what I think were two small cubes of mashed taro, which I've NEVER had before. They did add some textural difference to the dish, if nothing else. Finally, on the same friend's recommendation, I got their smashed cucumber in garlic sauce for take-out and had it for breakfast the next day. It was fresh smashed cucumber pieces in a spicy garlickly sauce which wasn't overpowering in either spice level or garlic. A nice light breakfast after eating way too much dim sum the day before. Prices were average for dim sum. Service was friendly and excellent. This has become another must visit place in Windsor for me!

Boiled dumplings in spicy sauce

I had always heard the best place to get dim sum in Detroit is to just go to Windsor. I've been here a couple times, and I would have to agree. I would easily cross the bridge just to eat here again and again. The ambience feels like your typical, nice Chinese restaurant. Something that I really enjoyed is seeing one of the chefs making the dumplings right in front of the window really signifying how fresh they are. The food is the star of the show. The dumplings in the spicy chili sauce are one of my favorite dishes. The dumplings are moist and flavorful, and the chili oil just gives it that nice oomph that elevates everything. The steamed soup dumplings are also spectacular with delicious broth ready to burst out of the wrapper. Unfortunately, the last time I went, service was not great at all. After we ordered and got seated down front and center of the space, we were basically ignored the rest of the night. Even though it was not even half full, somehow they completely forgot we existed. Almost all of our orders were given to the wrong tables and only after flagging the waiter down did they notice we had been sitting there for an hour+ without food. I was also disappointed that they did not try to reconcile their mistake besides giving a half-baked apology and excuse. 5 stars for the food but the service definitely knocks it down to a 3.

One of the best Chinese places for the price. Everything is slightly cheaper from us to Canada, and we were able to get all this food for a reasonable price. Ambiance was a typical Chinese restaurant. It's alittle older vibe and a smaller place, but that when you know it's good. Service was fast.

I completely forgot I've been here before, but glad I tried it again. The Shanghai noodles were pretty flavorful. The beef with broccoli was pretty good. The beef was a bit chewy and could have done with more spice. I do wish they were not so stingy with the side of chili oil we asked for (they gave the smallest amount that was mostly oil).

I'm glad we crossed over to get our dim sum fix at Shanghai. Dumplings are the star of the show here. The dim sum is rather limited compared to Shangri-La in Midtown Detroit but the handmade dumplings are worth a visit. There aren't many options for non-red meat eaters. And they don't make dumplings to order so if you like pork you're in luck. The prices seemed a little high for me but upon being served I understood why. The portions are family size. Definitely recommend.

We stopped by this place to pick up dinner after crossing the Ambassador Bridge from Detroit. It can be very busy over the weekend, so you may want to avoid peak hours. Their menu features a good combination of traditional Chinese cuisine, and Westernized Chinese dishes, like General Tso chicken. Dim Sum is also featured in the menu as well. However, you may want to be aware that some dishes' flavor has been localized to fit the local taste. When we ordered the Pork with Garlic Sauce, we couldn't help but notice the strong augmentation of maple syrup added to the dish. Although it gave an unique flavor, it was something that we didn't expect. Otherwise, all other dishes and dim sums were done very tastefully.

Crab & Pork Soup Dumplings

We had a great experience at Shanghai Bistro. Ordered the scallion pancakes, crab & pork soup dumplings, and pork soup dumplings. The pancakes were thick, crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. The dumplings were delicious, the soup was so good, the skin was a little thick, and the meat was generous. Perfect meal for two hungry customers on a chilly day. Would cross the border to Windsor just to come again!

Came all the way to Canada just for dim sum and let me say it was totally worth it. We got lucky as we were able to be seated right away but many people who came after us waited for quite a while. The dim sum took a long time to come out so definitely be prepared to wait for the dim sum. We got the spicy beef soup dumplings, pork soup dumplings, chive pancakes, shumai, and the sweet sesame soup. Our favorite was definitely the spicy beef soup dumplings. The broth was rich and delicious and not really spicy. The shumai was very different from shumai I've had in the past. We'll be making good use of our passports to come over here

This place is known for their delicious soup dumplings (xiao long bao)! The charcoal liu sha bao (salted egg yolk custard bun) was also my favorite and was both sweet and savory! Super fast service and our waiter who I think may be the owner was also very friendly and accommodating. They have a large menu of noodle, rice, meat and seafood entrees with more traditional Chinese dishes as well as Americanized dishes. So happy to have found this place that is conveniently only 30 mins across the border. Will definitely be coming back frequently.

Great food and taste with helpful service. Clean venue. It is difficult to make better food at home for the same price. I am a regular.

I really enjoyed the Chinese donut wrapped in rice noodle (cheung fun with youtiao) , that was probably my favorite dish. The congee had good flavor, but the meat in it tasted a little old. The siu mai were huge and definitely hit my craving. The har gow wasn't anything super special, but still decent. The chow fun was good, just could've used a bit more flavor. I also liked the black sesame balls for dessert, and I always enjoy black bean spare ribs, which were solid here too. Service was great, the young girls working there were very nice and attentive. Overall, a good, convenient dim sum spot especially if you're coming right across the border. Atmosphere felt like a homey Chinese restaurant.

We settled on many different types of dishes, and were impressed with all of them. When the beef had come out, it was still sizzling on the hot tray, which was nice to see. We also settled on stir-fried rice, stir-fried noodles, and green beans with beef; all of these dishes were also well-prepared and tasty. The restaurant itself was quite small however, it wasn't too crowded, which made our stay a pleasant one. Hubby and I laughed at how many times we zipped past the restaurant without noticing it. My husband and I both ordered the Major Tom Khatsu, which has a coconut chicken broth base. The chicken katsu pieces were the perfect level of crispy without being heavily breaded. There was also a nice little kick to the dish, which made it so, so yummy. Our friends got the Shoyu ramen with pork belly, and the Corned Beef ramen. The Shoyu dish seemed to be more enjoyable. Though we stuck with water, cans of Faygo pop seemed to be the drink offerings - other than alcoholic beverages. Areas for improvement include the waiting. Johnny Noodle King is a small place, with a main dining area and then what seems to be a bar area attached. We initially waited by the door for our table along with another small group (we were a party of four). We were then asked to go to the bar area to wait so that it would clear the door, but found it interesting how we were asked to move but not the other group. Also, we were standing away from the doormat we were not obstructing anyone's movements. The wait was long, and we asked if we could order food to the bar area (as opposed to waiting for a table). We were told 'no', yet there was a table full of patrons who were eating. There was no notification system, so our friend had to keep going to the front to see if our table was ready. Don't get me wrong; 'hooray' to Johnny Noodle King for having such great business volume. However, they need a way to manage it so that people will not be put off. Once we were seated, we did have good service from our waitstaff, and the food was very good. My husband and I plan to return to explore more of the menu. Hopefully, we can pick a time of day when waiting won't be such a big issue.
