Good food at an excellent price. The hot and sour soup was indeed very hot, temperature wise. The flavor was good, but not great. It tasted a bit boiled or maybe frozen. However, there were lots of veggies in it, so those flavors, subtle as they were, added some unique taste combinations back in. The egg roll, which is admittedly is a very simple appetizer, was very good. It came with a home-made plum sauce which was delicious. The roll was crispy and flavorful, which is often sort of hit-or-miss. It may have been one of the best egg rolls I've found. Recommended! I ordered Pepper Sauce Beef with Ford Rice for the entree. The rice was superb. Lots of flavor and balanced well with the beef. Speaking of the beef, it was very tender. The sauce combines lots of onions and other stuff I don't recognize for a tasty treat. The aroma is impressive; I liked it before I even got a chance to taste it. Ambiance is just so-so, but don't go there for that. The food is a hit. Recommended. Highly. read more

I ADORE this place's lunch specials. I always upgrade to shrimp fried rice because I love that the most but ANY of their fried rice tastes like home to me. The best in Windsor in my opinion, ofc :) I'm aiming to try everything on their lunch special menu. I usually get their veggie spring roll because it tastes good but also because their hot and sour soup isn't great. I would recommend their lunch specials because it's cheap ranging from $6.95 to $7.95 and comes with fried rice and your choice of hot and sour soup OR a spring roll (Standard is chicken! Ask your waitress for a veggie spring roll otherwise!) I wouldn't recommend using their plum sauce because it looks kinda gross (it being basically water). Also if you really care about the atmosphere, they only play an old radio station with a guy that croons and old tunes which is kinda weird for a Chinese restaurant. Service is nice but if for whatever reason you're sensitive to a blunt waitress, don't be. read more

I'm from Montreal and have lived in Ottawa for a few years, so my standards for Chinese food are pretty high. I have to eat out a lot for work, so when Mandarin House was suggested, I was open to the idea but tried not to have high hopes. The place itself looks pretty standard for a Chinese-Canadian restaurant with big round tables. The menu is also pretty standard, offering staples like sweet and sour chicken/meat/whatever, general Tso chicken and tofu and fried rice. It was nice that they had vegetarian options listed on the menu. I hate having to communicate that kind of stuff to a confused, blank face. I order the garlic eggplant off the lunch menu. For 8$, with tax, I got a soup, rice and an entrée. I went with the hot and sour soup, which I did not enjoy. There was a LOT of cornstarch in it, and it was more of a gelatin than a soup. The garlic eggplant was okay, but definitely amongst the better that I've had. There's nothing WRONG with Mandarin House, I'm just not in a hurry to go back. read more

Absolutely meh and not the 4-5 stars that drew me in. At most a 3 for their lunch specials due to the prices, though the dishes were slightly light on the meat. The black pepper steak wasn't bad and wouldn't mind getting again if I was near the area and wanted a quick fix but DO NOT GET THE HOT & SOUR SOUP. Drank a sip and tasted literally like thick water. Couldn't even get more than 2 scoops down. Initially I was impressed as it appeared to be a take out quality restaurant, however they did have yook see chao meen (not on lunch menu), which is a Cantonese dish with deep fried noodles smothered in sauce pork + vegetables. The dish was smaller than your usual restaurant and they added too much sauce so none of the noodles were crunchy and ruined the best part of the dish. The sauce a also was a little more on the plain side and lacked flavor. Then realizing it was $14 and that paying that in USD in Michigan for 50% more in portion and 80% more in taste was overly disappointing. From my experience I would just stick with the lunch specials. read more

Perfect for what I needed. Hot medium spiced food. I ordered the hot and sour soup, wontons, and Szechuan Chicken. Enough food for next day's dinner too. Down the block and across from my hotel, perfect to drop in after working late and have something warm. Service was quick, I was in and out in 45 minutes and had my leftovers packed to slide in the fridge for the next day. read more

I have been coming to Mandarin House for years. My boyfriend and his family are Chinese and they swear by this place. That's gotta say something. The portions aren't TOO large, everyone I go with (even my grandma) can finish their plate while there, but you also don't leave feeling like you need to be rolled back across the bridge to Detroit. The Wanton soup is great, you can tell the wantons are hand-made and they have a really great flavor to them, definitely the best that I have ever had. The spring rolls are also very good, very fresh, but a bit pricey. $1.39 for 1! But they are worth it. I always order the Crispy Beef which are deep fried pieces of beef with a General Tsao's sauce. My boyfriend always ordered the Beef with baby bok choy. He LOVES it. He begs his parents to bring it back for him when they visit there. My grandma is from germany and this was her first Chinese food experience in her life, she ordered the Pineapple Chicken and practically licked her plate afterward. You have an option of getting white or fried rice, both are great but the fried rice has mushrooms in it. I definitely recommend going here, it seems to make everyone happy :) It's worth a shot!! Mandarin House offers good food and a clean dining room. The owners are both gracious and friendly as well. They're also happy to accommodate reasonable requests. We tried this place after having numerous bad experiences at The Flying Tiger, and we definitely don't regret ordering from here. The food was hot, fresh, and very tasty. We ordered chicken fried rice with our order and it was surprisingly moist, unlike the little dried out pellets you get from most other places. We also had ordered the sweet and sour chicken with pineapple, it was delicious, so good in fact that even our daughter pigged out on it and she usually refuses to eat it. If you're looking for good food at a good price then this is the place to order. The delivery is a bit slower than other places, but i assume that's because they aren't just sending you the slop that's been sitting there like some of the other places we have ordered from. read more

I've been coming here since 1992 or 93....basically 20 years! This is by FAR the best Chinese restaurant in Windsor...and Detroit. I live in the Detroit area and drive 35 minutes to the border, then pay to cross and maybe deal with traffic crossing. But it is SOOOOOOOOOO worth it!!! Not only is this place the best in Windsor, its one of my favorite restaurants of all time! I've traveled to Toronto, Chicago, San Francisco, etc, but never found a Chinese place that matched this one. The wonton soup rocks! My wife and I order something different each time, and have yet to be disappointed. So many places serve soggy veggies, I can't stand that. Mandarin House serves crisp veggies. If your from Detroit, pay the toll and give this place a try! I'll be there this Saturday night. read more

Been coming here for 20+ years, since they moved from the University area on Wyandotte years ago, to downtown. Chef is great, wife is wonderful. Food is great and consistent always. Hot and Sour soup is awesome, dumplings, spring rolls fresh... just the best Chinese in the area. read more

I was looking for an old favorite, the tunnel Bar-B-Que that we found, but it was closed :-( So we randomly chose this restaurant. It was clean and we had Excellent service - but we were the only one's in the restaurant, the entire time we dined her. So for an hour, we were waited on by a very nice waitress. So other than the one other person that came in for a carry-out, we were alone. We decided on the dinner for two, since it was recommended. The Won Ton soup was very bland, the spring roll was very small and tasteless, The other three dishes were very good. Geneal Tso Chicken. We ordered it medium, but it tasted like it had almost no spice. The mushroom rice and the beef dish were tasty. Clean place. If you go, order ala cart and skip the soup and appetizers. read more

Went in the afternoon before the dinner rush. Service was excellent, food served promptly and hot. Food quality on the other hand, leaves much to be desired. The fried mushroom rice was good, but the quality of meat that they use is horrendous. The chicken was literally only strips of fat, no meat. If there was little pieces of meat, it was sliced so thin that to couldn't tell it was meat anymore. Good flavour, but I wouldn't be surprised if they don't last much longer. read more
