    Mings is one of the few Asian places in Windsor with a decent price to match solid food (if you're from Toronto don't expect spectacular but definitely solid for price). Mings definitely better than Shin Shin, Jade and Schezuan Garden. Lunch special $8 is great value. Service was great and food was quick enough. Definitely will be back.

    Before I begin, let me say that I live in Chinatown in Las Vegas. I believe I have some of the…read moreabsolute best in Chinese cuisine available to me 24 hours a day. I am aware I need to adjust expectations, and I am. Cantonese Gourmet East touts itself as a takeout restaurant, but it does have the ability to dine in. There were quite a few people parked in random areas out front, so I chose to park next door at a business that was closed. It was a very short walk to the restaurant. Upon arriving it smelled overwhelming of lemon cleaning product. It was extremely clean in the dining area, so I chose to eat there. The lacquered tables were really cute and depicted different flowers and animals appropriate to the setting. I approached the ordering window. It was a very simple hole in the wall that could slide shut behind plastic. I asked if there was tofu. No tofu, so I ordered the curry shrimp, which came with white rice and I ordered wonton soup. I returned to my padded diner chair. I was not offered a drink and I completely forgot to order one. I saw there was a soda machine in the dining area, but I didn't take advantage of that. I tipped up front when I paid and said I would be eating inside. After about a 10 minute wait, I heard someone yell to me from the window "Come get your order." I was given a paper plate, plastic fork and spoon, 2 napkins, a fortune cookie, a paper bag, a plastic container of shrimp curry wrapped in plastic wrap, a baggie of fried wontons, a plastic container of wonton soup wrapped in plastic wrap, 4 soy sauce packets, and a paper container of white rice. I unwrapped my meal at the table. I don't use soy sauce. It changes the flavor for me. I will use it while I'm cooking beef, but other than that I don't use it. Why is this significant? The food was bland. It was good. It just desperately needed seasoning. I sat and read Yelp reviews while I ate. I read that they don't use MSG in their food. That's super nice for people with allergies. They still needed a little bit of something to bring out the natural flavors. Salt would have worked great. Maybe that's not a thing? It definitely needed something though. I liked the wonton soup better than the curry shrimp. I asked for chopsticks and proceeded to pull all of the green peppers out of my container of curry shrimp. It filled my plate and took my huge curry portion down to something I could easily eat. I could have told them no peppers, but I love the essence they impart. I just don't enjoy eating them directly. I finished my onions and shrimp in a very dark yet mild curry. It was good. I wouldn't order it again. It came out extremely hot and my shrimp continued to cook in the sauce. I saw them get smaller and smaller in real time. The wonton soup was minimal carrots, some pea pods, onion, bok choy, and mostly wontons. I dumped in my baggie of fried wontons. This was good. I feel like it gave the soup more flavor. I normally will drink the broth. It didn't have a lot of flavor, so I just focused on the solid offerings. It was good. Would I get it again? I think so. It just didn't have the vibrant broccoli I'm used to. That's ok. I'm adjusting expectations and I'm clear on the fact that I'm spoiled. I finished and packed everything back into my paper bag. I asked the lady at the window if she wanted me to use the small trash can in the dining area. She told me to give my bag of trash to her. I had a couple bites of rice, but that's not really what I was interested in. She asked me if I wanted to take it home. I passed. Would I come back? Not for dine in. That was not a great experience. Time will tell.

I got home and opened the food and it was filled with vegetables I was allergic to. I called and spoke with the person I ordered from they confirmed that it should've been made with only bok choy and was told to come back and get the correct food. I asked on this phone call if I would need to bring the food that was made incorrectly back they assured me I didn't. Then less than 10 minutes later called me back and said that the kitchen didn't think they made a mistake and to bring back the food to prove they were wrong. I came back with the receipt and incorrectly made item and inquired as to why they switched up in less than 10 minutes no response was given. Then a woman who I believe to be an owner opened up the food and started sifting through it with a spoon telling me what the vegetables were. Once I again reminded them that, that still isn't what I ordered she finally remade the food and made me wait again as they didn't have the correctly made meal ready as they promised me on both phone calls. This incident also violates Rule 3-306.14 of the Michigan Food Safety Code as well. I have been a loyal customer of Shang-ri La's Midtown and West Bloomfield location even during COVID and to be treated this way was pretty devastating.

That's why food reviews are so subjective. They're all based on personal tastes and flavors. So, as I write this review, you may want to take it with a grain of salt. I don't frequent Windsor very often, so I don't know what the competition is like here. Maybe Sun Hong is "as good as it gets" for Windsor and other places are even worse, who knows... For Roasted BBQ meats, my favorite is still Yummy Wok BBQ (in Toronto). Their flavors are inexplicable, but I can tell you it's all in their rub and their marinade. To me Sun Hong duck wasn't even in the same league. The duck was roasted the traditional way, but it had so little flavor, it barely registered. When I asked for duck sauce, they gave me packets of Plum sauce. Wait whut? Now for many, plum sauce is what you have with duck, but I have never eaten roast duck with plum sauce. At Yummy Wok, nobody asks for plum sauce. In fact, I don't even know if they have plum sauce. When you order a duck there, they douse it with their marinade (which is 5-spice based), and let me tell you, it's the crack of duck sauces! Once you try that, you'll never go back! On the bright side, the duck at Sun Hong was not dried out. 2-stars for the proper cook. The roasted pork was a little overdone and the meat was drier that I liked. I got the piece just below the ribs. The pieces had a medium amount of fat. On the bright side the skin was crispy as it should be. The sauce with this is Hoisin, and aside from the cook, you really can't go wrong with this dish. Yummy Wok uses their signature dry rub on their roast pork, which makes it a little salty for most, but it makes up for it in flavor. Sun Hong has no such rub and their pork was barely salted. Combine this with the overcook, and I have to go 3 stars here. Lastly, I ordered some BBQ pork (aka Char Siu). This is a baked pork that is honey glazed. I asked for a leaner cut here as I wanted to use any leftovers to make a fried rice and they did a decent job in getting me some leaner pieces. Like the roast pork, the char siu was overcooked which dried it out a bit. Flavour wise, it was pretty much as expected. Again, it's five-spice based and there's little variation outside the other main ingredients. The only variable is the quantity they use to make certain flavors more prominent than others. They did cut the slices quite thick, more than I'm used to, and that added to making it a bit more tough. When overcooked, the key is to slice it thinner to make it more tender. Despite this and the overcook, this was probably their best dish. 3.5 stars. The other shocker for me was the price. 1/2 Roast Duck, 1lb of Roast Pork, and 1lb of Char Siu came to a whopping $62! Overall, if I'm being honest, this was very underwhelming for me. But keep in mind, everyone has different standards. Many people do prefer that their meats are fully cooked (I'm not one of them. I like these types of meats, just cooked -- no pink.) and many prefer it super lean (again, I'm not one of them. I like a little fat as cooking with the fat is what gives it the flavor!) Lastly, many prefer milder flavors, whereas I like mine bold and intense. My standards are most likely different from others, as are my taste preferences. They are so delicious and nostalgic of places I would go to in Toronto in my childhood. The portion was so huge I now have noodles for days, which we are super happy about. We had the BBQ buns and pineapple buns, both really sweet, sticky and delicious. We had the rice noodles with shrimp and either beef or pork (not sure which one I actually ordered), I crave those, especially the shrimp ones. We tried the fried, crispy shrimp bean curd rolls with plum sauce and a favorite of mine, sticky rice. As always, we had tons of leftovers and look forward to having our meal for lunches and dinners this week. Plus, now that I know they have a great selection and have better hours than some of the other places, we will be back.
