MACTRONICS: FRIENDLY, FANTASTIC, FAST, REASONABLE! My…read moreMacbook Air was deluged with a cup of tea (with milk and sugar) and its life was hanging by a thread. My initial horror deepened at finding the extra Apple iCloud space I was paying for did not include my laptop data. Thanks to some online advice, I searched for a local Mac recovery specialist instead of taking it into an Apple Store, and found MacTronics, with high ratings and glowing reviews. On their next open day I spoke with Terri on the phone, who gave me the quote for their diagnostic fee (very reasonable). I brought the laptop in that day and left it, having agreed that my primary concern was recovery of the data. A little later that day, Terri called to say the tech found the data was recoverable and would need a backup drive; Terri walked me through finding an inexpensive one on Amazon, delivered directly to them the following day. She also provided the estimate for that work, which included the amount of the initial fee. (Still super reasonable, since I was worried I'd have to buy a new laptop!) Meanwhile, the tech would continue to work on cleaning up the laptop insides, keyboard and trackpad. Terri called the next day to let me know they had received the drive and the tech was backing up my data. The following day she called to say it was ready for me to pick up. She detailed the work that had been done, providing screen shots showing all hardware tests passed. She also said some keys and the trackpad had some residual stickiness, but were still usable. The tech said it was not cost effective to replace the keyboard and trackpad, but did show the cost if I wanted to. His recommendation if the stickiness was too bothersome was to use an inexpensive external keyboard. He also set up Time Machine on the backup drive and had done two backups. Terri walked me through everything he had done and showed me how to use the drive, recommending backups every week or two weeks. Then I made sure my data was being backed up to the cloud. Terri checked in with me a few days later to make sure all was well. I am so grateful to the folks at MacTronics!

(Bad day) The best way I can describe my experience is to say mactronics provide the type of service you were accustomed to 30yrs ago but simply doesn't exist anywhere anymore. A few hrs after dropping it off Teresa called me with an update. (Who does update calls anymore???) "Sara your part has been ordered and I need to confirm your cross street." (My cross street????) That being said, I had a serious framerate issue with my gaming desktop, and was doing troubleshooting on it for two weeks. I consulted Reddit, I wiped everything besides the BIOS, ran plenty of diagnostics, gave it a good dusting, but nothing fixed the issue. I finally decided to take it in and have someone look at the hardware, realizing most likely I had a busted chord or fan somewhere that would need to be replaced. I gave Scott a rundown, and he told me he would call me when he figured it out. He called me ten minutes later, so quickly I did not see the call until they had already closed. I then worked the rest of the week with Alicia who did all the replacements for my cooling system, graphics card and power core. Just got it home and have my computer running better than when I first bought it due to the new upgrades. I cannot recommend them enough, they are very knowledgeable and Alicia is a saint. I found That Bytes online and told him this would be a good place to go based on reviews and proximity to our home. It's been 2 months and we can't get in touch with him to get it back. We've tried countless times to check in on progress. His listed phone number goes unanswered, and we can't leave voicemails. When we are able to connect with him in person he can't seem to ever provide a date at which it will be completed or even produce the hard drive for us to take it elsewhere. While sitting in the parking lot around 1:30 PM today waiting for his arrival another family came by with the same problem and were super bummed when we told him he was MIA. His door says he opens at 9ish in the morning but his schedule can change without notice, so it's very difficult to catch him even during typical working hours. At this point I'm wondering if he's ok? Or maybe he just needs some consulting on proper expectation setting and communication cadences for running a customer facing business. Please give us back the hard drive.

So here is a more general review that conveys my experience. I had just moved to Austin, I needed computer repair during Memorial day weekend and Tony was the only business that was willing to come out. The service was really bad, and Tony less than honest, this individual took a payment from me but declined to perform the computer repair service we agreed to. He also stated that he preferred cash so as to not report it. The 2 times he actually did the work, it was not well done, the problems were still present in the laptop. The 3rd time he insisted on another payment for another series of repairs pre paid and disappeared. He asks for $100 for 3 repair sessions. I paid $200 and only got 2. He also does not have an office and his appearance was less than professional, very dishevelled, his clothes were'nt very clean and neither was he. When I asked for my money back or the repairs,I had to leave him a multitude of messages, he became aggressive and belligerent and insulted me and was hostile. Stated that he was not going to do the work because I was less than pleasant. Telling him that the computer was still not working apparently was less than pleasant. I asked him to please meet me to finish the work, he said only if I pre-paid for another series of 3 repairs and I reluctantly agreed as I needed my laptop fixed. He disappeared. So I lost $100 in these transactions. I wrote it off, at least I don't have to see him again or deal with him again. The 2 times he met me, he complained the whole time about his finances, his problems, personal problems, family problems. I just wanted my laptop repaired, instead I got an earful by a person who seemed depressed and troubled. Beware, this business is not honest and will likely not do the work agreed upon and will try to get paid, with me he insisted aggressively and then disappear. The very worst that I have seen in local businesses. I was not impressed.

He has always been honest, efficient, and reliable in all my dealings with him. My first experience involved my home computer that had what I thought was a seized hard drive (February 2010). After diagnosis, I purchased a power supply and hard drive from a local discount electronics supply store. My Austin Computer Guy confirmed my diagnosis and rebuilt my computer with the parts I purchased and restored my computer to better than it was before and all for a reasonable hourly price. In May 2015, my Microsoft Outlook settings mistakenly were erased. I was unable to get things restored to normal operation. My Austin Computer Guy restored the Outlook settings on both my Home computer and work laptop. Additionally, he installed new shareware virus protection on both. Once again, it was a reasonable hourly price for his services. Two weeks later, May 2015, a lightning strike took out my computer and associated equipment. My Austin Computer Guy diagnosed a bad power supply and bad motherboard. I expressed to him that I didn't want a new computer, I wanted my computer. He recommended that he could drop my hard drive, memory, and light scribe DVD writer into a new box for $200. My new computer was returned in a timely fashion and runs just like it was my old computer, except much better! He listened and gave me exactly what I wanted. I trust My Austin Computer Guy to diagnose my computer problems, provide timely and effective service, listen to my needs, and continually do so for a reasonable hourly price. I will recommend his work to other businesses as well as friends. Thank you, My Austin Computer Guy!
