This was the first time coming to Campground while visiting in Arcata. I would definitely come back to try new things on the menu, but probably just for a special occasion. It's quite fancy and pricey. If you have a big appetite and are on a budget, this is not the place for you ... The customer service was great. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and friendly. I ate there with my partner and her mom. The ambience was very clean and rustic looking. I enjoyed it very much, it wasn't too loud or dark or bright in there either. The lighting was great. The menu has a lot of great things to choose from, very creative! The only downside is that none of the entrees come with any sides, you have to order that separate, so it is a bit pricey. We ordered a dozen of the grilled oysters, it's about $12 for 4. The red chimichurri sauce it came with was amazing. I ordered the 16oz ribeye, my partner got the New York steak, both medium rare. My partners mom got the lamb. we shared 3 sides, the beef tallow fingerling potatoes, stuffed polenta and the green beans with pickled onions and a yogurt sauce. We also got dessert, creme brûlée with blueberries and thyme, and also a grilled pineapple sorbet. My partners steaks was perfectly medium rare. My ribeye on the other hand was rare, even though I ordered it med rare, it wasn't an issue, I still ate it anyway. The lamb came undercooked as well, it was more in the rare side than it was medium, but nonetheless we did not complain. I was expecting a bigger piece of ribeye for a 16oz or at least come with the bone. The char on the meats were perfect and added great flavor. The chimichurri sauce over the ribeye was great as well. All of the sides were exquisite. The dessert, amazing. My only complaint, the plating of the main entrees could have been better, maybe use smaller plates instead of large circle ones. Smaller plates would make the dish look bigger and less empty. I am interested to taste everything else on the menu, especially the duck. read more

We were pretty disappointed by our last meal here. My husband got the $32 chicken entree, which barely had any meat, was undercooked, and the mashed potato serving was literally a tablespoon worth. I got the vegetarian polenta bowl. The polenta was cold, the wild mushroom topping was overwhelmed by the tomato Marsala sauce (maybe sweet tomato Marsala isn't the best pairing for wild mushrooms?) and there was a pile of spring mix on top that seemed out of place. The pairing in that dish was just strange. The $12 glass of wine was also a very small pour. It seems that our experience at Campground this time around we fell victim to that problem when really nice and pricey restaurants try to be too fancy without true quality to back it up. Learn how to cook a steak. We ordered a New York steak medium. It arrived burnt on the outside and raw inside. We sent it back 3 times and then requested not to pay for it. I visited Campground for dinner two times within the span of a month and had very different experiences. The first time I was really impressed by the atmosphere and our server was awesome. I ordered the vegetarian ropa vieja (braised cabbage and mushrooms on a bed of polenta with plantain chips and greens) which blew me away! I loved it so much, I couldn't stop thinking about it. I ordered a glass of wine, but wished that I had ordered a cocktail because they looked fantastic. My second visit was sadly filled with misses. Our server was a bit odd, not warm and friendly like the first. I ordered the emerald valley (or forest?) cocktail, which included tequila, jalapeño and cucumber, but it just tasted like straight agave--way way way too sweet. To make matters worse the ropa vieja was disappointing with bland and lumpy polenta. I'm willing to give Campground another try since my first experience was so awesome (and the owners' sister restaurant Salt is great), but there seems to be an issue with consistency in terms of food and service. read more

I am torn about how to rate Campground. I had the very, very best wedge salad ever. The dressing was wonderful, they cut the wedge into edible pieces that were easy to eat, as opposed to the chunk of lettuce that is often difficult to cut. The bacon cut into small cubes that were flavorful and added a wonderful texture. You get the idea--it was delicious! I also ordered the baby back ribs with Carolina bbq sauce, cornbread, and coleslaw. The cornbread had just a bit of texture, lots of flavor, and was baked to perfection. The coleslaw was good. The ribs with the carolina bbq sauce were inedible. They were dry. As in dry as straw. There was no sauce. And they had no flavor. I cut into the first rib and even the steak knife they gave me only sawed the meat. So I cut into a space between two ribs about 1/3 of the length. Still dry, still like little pieces of straw. You see my dilemma? Great salad, inedible ribs--i did eat all of the cornbread, I was hungry. The place was packed and our server did not refill my iced tea or check on anyone else's beverages and did not return to check on our dinners until she brought the check. She inquired about the dinner, I told her that the ribs were dry. One of us wanted a dessert, which the server told us she had given us because of the ribs. One of my guests had the halibut, which was tasty, she said, but a very small portion, like maybe 3 ounces, maybe. As I mentioned, the place was packed, which likely explains the reason that the service was so slow. None of us had anything from the bar and it still took over two hours form seating to leaving. I assure you we did not dawdle, as we had a child with us. We intentionally has early reservations (6:30) so that we could get in and get out in 60 to 75 minutes. I came here about four times. First time my filet mignon was burnt to a crisp. The second time we waited for an hour for our table although we had reservations. Third time, breakfast was overpriced for what you get- the mimosa was literally a shooter with fruit (and 15 bucks). After a long time away from Arcata, it was a pleasant surprise to come across Campground, a hip and upscale joint that shuns the otherwise casual bohemian vibe of the town around it. I only came in for a cocktail, perhaps with the unconscious intention of forgoing food so I had an excuse for a second visit. Knowledge of their food menu unknown, I will say the cocktails are absolutely fantastic and the bar staff are super personable, top professionals. The gentleman bartender who helped me first (name escapes me) sure knows his drinks. He made me a rum cocktail not featured on their regular menu that was the perfect balance between tangy and sweet. I sipped and chatted with the lovely Madeleine, who was great to talk to and also very knowledgeable of the menu. I came back a second night and got a smoked whiskey drink that is fascinating to watch them make. You leave a piece of wood on top for as long as you want the drink smokey, then enjoy. Between these two drinks and with an eye on their food (especially the snake river farms American wagyu flat iron steak), I have plenty of reasons to return. read more

I've been wanting to give campground a try for awhile now. And I can't say I'm very impressed. The staff was very friendly. The environment/decor is also top notch but the food was pricey for what you get. I got salmon which was $21 no sides included so had to pay an extra $10 just to get a decent amount of food to eat. The little part of the salmon that was cooked was ok tasting but it was pretty much completely raw and I could barely eat. read more

Just finished dinner here and it was honestly a bit of a mixed bag. For the most part the food and drinks were really excellent. Food seemed really good and really unique. The downside was that the service was pretty slow. Food took a good amount of time to come out. Also, I ordered the New York strip steak rare and it came out more of a medium. I dont usually like to send food back but when you pay almost $30 dollars for a steak you kind of want it to come out right. After I sent it back the waiter came over and told me a rare steak would be cool in the center and and asked me twice if that's what I wanted and still seemed surprised I wanted a rare steak. My husband ordered a rare steak too and had no issues getting his the way he wanted. It was really weird and made things a bit uncomfortable. read more

Served on a bed of arugula, there could have been more greens, and the small amount of avocado mashed onto the bottom of the bowl should have been more generous, and perhaps not mashed.
