I have always enjoyed coming here for breakfast and lunch. The food is always tasty. Sadly, My boyfriend and I don't live in the area anymore so we don't get to visit much. We happened to stop in this morning for the breakfast tacos since we had an appointment near by. We each got two tacos. While I was getting water, he paid. When we got to our appointment he mentioned they must have upped their prices. Well they must have because I don't see how 4 breakfast tacos could have added up to $24!!!??? That's insane. This place is by far my absolute FAVORITE tex mex resteraunt. It has the best queso blanco I have ever tried, and they are really known for it. Had a Groupon deal at Caliente (formerly Hugo's Caliente before being sued by Hugo's) so got some takeout. I've dined in once before so I won't touch on service here and focus on the food instead. Caliente is a weird hybrid between a quick service Mexican restaurant like Chipotle and a sit-down restaurant. They're having an identity of crisis here but the food is fresh. Went with the Caribbean shrimp which comes in a pineapple sauce with cilantro rice, tortillas, and beans. This is all accompanied by free chips and salsa. The salsa has a smoky flavor and is quite tasty while the tortilla chips are great! I'm a huge fan of tortilla chips and always appreciate a restaurant that does it right. The food was good and made a nice meal. The sweet pineapple sauce which I forgot to mention also includes pineapple chunks are great if you're a fan of sweet sauces. My only complaint is that there wasn't a lot of shrimp so wish the portion size was bigger with this entree. read more

We came here on a whim just driving around to see what places were open and offering to-go orders. When entering the place has a comfortable restaurant vibe where you would relax and grab a margarita and chips and queso with friends. They have a laid out food station similar to Chipotle and you just order whatever you'd like. We ordered the combo fajitas for 2 and used the nifty yelp coupon of free queso and a mango margarita. We were told to "leave they were closed and there was a sign on the door that said so." Also, do you speak Spanish. We chose this restaurant because it was in the area that we had an event to go to and needed to eat an early dinner. We called ahead to make sure they were open and that there would be no problem for us to get a table for five when we would arrive at 4:30. As we were opening the door two people, employees, came out. Not saying anything to us. The sign on the door said open 7 AM to 9 PM. Even though there was no one in the restaurant we went and sat down. Five minutes later someone came out from the back and stood at our table and stared at us. Not saying anything. Finally he said do you speak Spanish? We said no. I said we called ahead to find out if you were open or not for an early dinner and we were told yes. He said "oh no we're closed, sign the door."There was no sign!. The hours of operation were painted on the door which showed they were open. It was very awkward and rude. Literally need more employees. It was our first time here (family of 6) wanted mexican and seen this place on yelp. we were all starving and waited so long to get 1 plate at a time. The server acted like that's the way enchiladas always are. Hmmmmm? Been eating Mexican food over 50 years and have had flour tortilla enchiladas twice at most. At the very least they should note that the enchiladas are not traditional and are made with thick flour tortillas. They didn't have ice tea, and they didn't have Dos Equis beer, so they lost a sale there. I've visited Caliente for both lunch and breakfast. I had the chicken enchilada when I came in most recently. It was great don't get me wrong but the sour cream sauce wasn't that good. Its really just sour cream and heavy cheese. I did really really like that they used fresh grilled fajita chicken in the enchiladas. The beans and rise were also well seasoned. My go-to for Houston texmex. Reminds me of sante fe Mexican with some great flavours. Service is top notch with a great community feeling. Solid staff, that always remember my order and provide great service with a smile. Jean, Pedro, and Alberto are the main staff that help me and all of them are fantastic and always have a great attitude and service. Gluten free friendly as well, just make sure to communicate it's a gluten allergy if celiac so they can take precautions. They'll gladly provide details on prevention steps they take. I always enjoy my meals at Caliente. The ingredients are fresh, the restaurant is always clean and the staff is always friendly. Despite how small the space is, it's never too crowded or cramped. My favorite dish are the veggie enchiladas. I usually don't like veggie enchiladas because there is too much cheese and the veggies are frozen, but that's not the case with Caliente. The veggies are always crisp and fresh and the sauce has just enough heat. They are wonderful. I also enjoy their salsa and queso. The only con is the price; it's not a place I am able to visit often, but when I do, I truly enjoy it and always tell people to give it a try.
