A new addition to my weekday routine! I've just recently started coming to Caffe Chiave and find the space charming. The cafe is very lowkey and casual. Whether it's bustling with conversations or the music is playing in the background, this should be a stop if you're ever in the Piedmont neighborhood. I typically get an iced oatmilk mocha which is always made just right. Drinks come out quick by the espresso bar! The food is great too, I think my favorite is one of the current specials which is a burger with a jalapeño aioli. Please come by! read more

Always have a solid breakfast/lunch at this cafe, which used to be Cafe Treiste. The cozy Italian vibe, layout of several tables to have a meal, work, or just to chill/chat with some friends or a date, delicious looking array of desserts, and musicians on some evenings makes this place a regular local spot. The musician schedule board is always updated so you can plan ahead. There are also some local artwork showcased. The menu is pretty basic, with daily specials. We decided to split a biscuit, the avocado toast, which came with two fried eggs and home fries, freshly squeezed OJ, and coffee. We sat outside to enjoy the nice day. Avo toast wasn't my favorite, but it was good. Juice and biscuit were yummy. Usually pass by on my way home and had some good desserts, like a key lime pie slice. Caffe Chive was a decent cafe for me to work in when I was in Oakland, since that was all I was really looking for anyway, but it was busier than I expected it'd be. The service was quick, the staff were friendly enough, and the coffee and the wifi were decent. There's not much more I could ask for when it comes to a place I can work at that isn't at home! I wouldn't necessarily come out of my way here, but it seems like a good enough place to catch up with a friend after a meal. Overall, an okay place, but I can't say anything more about it. Good European style cafe. Excellent expresso coffee, pastries and sandwiches. I go there often enough that the usual barista prepares my cappuccino as soon as I walk in the door. I feel so disappointed with this place. I came in to treat myself after a difficult task and boy, was I let down. I paid $22 for dry toast and bad costumer service. The server didn't bring butter (are times really that hard that the place needs to penny pinch with butter??) and when I asked her for ketchup and hot sauce, she acted like I was asking for a personal favor. I wonder if the amount of melanin in my body has anything to do with the crappy and discriminatory service that server provided. There's a few tables on the sidewalk out front and more extensive patio seating in back, adjacent to the public parking lot. I look back fondly on the original Caffe Trieste in North Beach and am saddened that it's embroiled right in a family feud now (and I don't mean the Steve Harvey game show kind of family feud) that threatens to shut down the sixty-plus-year-old shop. I don't think this Piedmont Avenue outlet bears much resemblance to the original except for the name and perhaps some of the beans being ground. They also offer food here, actually a lot of breakfast options, paninis, pizzas, quiches, salads...just a lot of stuff I don't remember seeing in North Beach. But I assume the menu appeals to young Oakland couples out with their dogs and baby strollers and looking for a place to park themselves. At least that was most of the customer population I saw at this location, especially when I sat in the back patio facing the parking lot. I kept having to scoot over to make room for another family. I remember when this place was Caffe Trieste and recall liking the chicken pesto panini so that's what I ordered during a recent visit. Sadly, the panini wasn't very good and the same was true for the prosciutto pizza. The panini was plain. It would have benefited from some salt or other seasoning on the chicken and the pesto was bland. Despite the grill marks, it didn't seem like it was put into the panini press. The pizza was lackluster. While it looked good, the flavor was not. Add to the overall disappointing meal was the dirty table that I ended up cleaning myself before sitting down. Doesn't look like much when you walk by but I sure do love Caffe Chiave. I often stop here to enjoy coffee with friends and sit outdoors out back, dog friendly there too. It's always busy and a favorite spot for local regulars. Their pastry and cake section comes from a SF bakery and is very tempting. A cute bistro on Piedmont Ave. A nice breakfast place on Thanksgiving morning. When you walk in look at the menu, order then grab a table. They'll give you a number and bring your food to your table. They made a great Cafe Latte for me :) I ordered a breakfast sandwich which consisted of scrambled egg, sausage patti, and Jack cheese on a croissant. I am ALL ABOUT this coffee!! I get happy every time I remember that I am near Piedmont Ave. because I can stop here for an incredible, flavorful iced latte. I don't know why, but the unadulterated taste of pure, Italian espresso beans makes me feel so great. I think it's relief. This is the taste I seek, and Trieste delivers. I'm not sure why I've made it a tradition to get the iced version here, but its not a habit I want to break yet. Look at the menu and smugly smile to yourself that EVEN YOU don't know what some of the Italian drink options are up there. No, no, this isn't a "Latte, Cappuccino or Iced" only place. But there is nothing snobby about the guys working here, or the clients who just like their coffee good. (Present company excluded, perhaps---re: the snobby bit). Unclean and high-risk environment during a pandemic---and any other time! Seriously! How much effort does it take to wipe down a few tables, clean counters, and maybe cover the food sitting out in a cafe when the world is dealing with a health crisis? I reluctantly agreed to meet a friend after seeing my colorist on Piedmont Ave. The contrast between her pristine salon and the copious measures she's taking to care for herself and her clients and that of Cafe Chiave could not be more extreme. It would seem Chiave staff are trying to create an environment that, in any season, gets people sick. I sat with my friend at a table near the door to get ventilation, and it was incredible to me that during the 2 hours we sat there, NOT ONE staff member thought to wipe down the crumb-covered tables or sanitize counters and knobs out of respect and consideration for themselves and their patrons, and frankly for the rest of the world. It is a dirty place to begin with, and food was sitting out on the counter as were the serve-yourself pastries, which are not cased off like Arizmendi's, so the food is exposed to all germs, etc. in the air. The floor is dirty, and they are still offering self-serve water, so patrons hands are everywhere. I am so far from hysterical about this crisis that I have actually had to drive around town to multiple stores and strategically plan my shopping just to keep staples in my household since I basically ignored all the corona virus drama until 2 days ago. I am NOT paranoid and even lazy when it comes to germs. I believe it's better to expose to than isolate the body from bacteria, but these days, that attitude is just not ok....DUH. I have never written a bad review before, and I have avoided well-deserved slams over and over again because I would rather just move on. But Cafe Chiave is simply making a HUGE contribution to the spread of germs that can not and should not be ignored. I can't believe how irresponsible and clueless the management and staff are! Caffe Trieste has successfully transplanted the feel of a North Beach Café to Piedmont. The staff is super friendly, and they offer a wide range of sandwiches, salads, pizza and entrées with many veganizable options. I ordered a wonderful pizza with no cheese, figs, mushrooms, caramelized onions, arugula and olives for only $14! Anywhere else, this many toppings on the pizza that turned out to be too big for one person would be at least $10 more. Make sure you order pizza to share with your friends, or you will have soggy pizza to put in your toaster oven later! They also do coffee drinks and have beer on tap. It's a nice casual atmosphere and there were some people working on computers, several families with small children and even a group of adults practicing learning Italian when I was there. A wide range of generations were represented, service was excellent and the sound level was really acceptable for normal conversation. If the weather is nice, they do have some seats outside to sit in the sun or shade on either side of the building. read more

What a cute find on Piedmont Avenue! I randomly chose this place to have coffee with an acquaintance, and I found myself enjoying the casual atmosphere this place offered. Plus, Caffe Trieste seemed to be the only coffee shop open past 6pm. Plenty of seating right out front, inside, and out back. I prefer sitting in the back patio because it is less noisy. I haven't tried any of their meal items but the prices seem reasonable. Caffe Trieste always seems to have a happy hour and/or lunch specials, which are great deals. Coffee is also great! Garlic Bread ($3.50) - Probably the best garlic bread I've had as an appetizer! It was loaded up with butter, and was toasted perfectly - crisp on the edges yet substantially chewy on the inside. What happened?? The quality of breakfast has drastically diminished. In the last 4 orders the eggs have been way over cooked and the yolks aren't even runny. The chili flakes have been completely missing, and in the last order the home fries that are supposed to come with the order were completely missing. He was super accommodating and you can tell he was upbeat for the long shift he was working on a Saturday afternoon. There was also a younger late-teen, maybe early 20s guy working that was also super helpful and quick. On the exact opposite end of the spectrum was the guy who's name I didn't catch, but I overheard him saying in an obvious matter to Tony that he only spoke English. This guy was absolutely miserable and infected others with his negativity. Rude, constantly rolled his eyes and showed a lot of customers attitude. I get it, not everyone likes going to work all the time and we all have bad days, but don't take it out on your customers. Other than that, the panini here was so good - I was surprised I hadn't heard of it early. They don't take substitutions, but trust me - you'll manage.
