Okay, I usually get the meatball sandwich or the spaghetti with meatballs. However, this last time I went in and they were out of meatballs. Ugh Okay, I'll adapt, I guess. I love raviolis and I love bolognese sauce. So, I tried the ravioli and subbed the marinara for bolegnese sauce. My boyfriend had the Margarita pizza. Both, magically, were incredibly tasteless. Which is strange since I usually feel like the meatball sandwich and the spaghetti are a tad over-seasoned. I suppose it could have just been bad luck, and the cook forgot to add seasoning. Either way, I have learned my lesson. I will not be getting the ravioli or Margarita pizza again. I also have learned that the pinot noir wine is very overpriced for what it is. The house wine is $4 a glass and around $12 for a carafe. The pinot noir is $8.70 for a glass and just really isn't that good. For a cafe, I will be getting the house wine next time. read more

I live in the neighborhood and have been coming here for 10 years. The new owners are ruining it. My past two dinner experiences: Ordered pesto for my daughter. It was green but it was not pesto. Showed it to cashier who tasted it and agreed it wasn't pesto. Did the chef confuse the basil with the spinach? Two nights ago I ordered the dinner special which was a parmasean chicken panini and cesar salad. What I got was a grilled chicken breast sandwich (not breaded) on toasted rye and and what appeared to be their garden greens salad. Not a cesar. Not a panini. Not parmasean chicken. It's sad they couldn't just leave well enough alone. I miss it being trieste. read more

Wooden round tables are jammed into the space, which makes it feel cramped. The music jumped all around, and didn't seem to have a theme. Our food took a while to come to us. I've been to Cafe Trieste in the city, it's an institution in SF. I passed by this branch of Cafe Trieste on a rainy day and I wanted a hot chocolate. I ordered a Ciocolata, and what I got was a lukewarm glass of "hot" chocolate. Seriously? I wanted something to go with it like a biscotti but tried the chocolate covered cookie with caramel inside. That was actually decent. There are other cafes on Piedmont Ave which I'm sure serve better hot chocolate than Café Trieste. read more

This is a decent lunchtime spot if you're craving Italian food. The portions are just right for a normal appetite. Me, on the other hand, usually gets 2 dishes because I'm such a piggy. The first time I came here was with a group. I called ahead to make a reservation but unfortunately, they don't take reservations. However, they anticipated our arrival and had a section waiting for us. Each time I come, the service is great. The food is tasty. The dish I usually order is the vegetarian lasagna...yummy! The pesto pasta and panini sandwiches are good too. The last time I came I had the caprese salad and the spinach and mushroom quiche and I thoroughly enjoyed both dishes. The only dish I've had that I wouldn't order again is the margharita pizza. That's my favorite pizza but unfortunately, their version is sub-par *le sigh* I'll definitely continue coming back here when I have a hankering for some Italian food. It might be ok if cleanliness is not important to you, or if you don't expect any type of courtesy from the staff. Nothing here has been cleaned for years. I know there is a drought but I'm sure it would be ok to occasionally fill a bucket with a mop. Oh, that may require some effort, which doesn't exist within this staff. This is an OK cafe to visit. I think the service here might be a reflection of the name, unfortunately. I had a Rice Krispie bar that was half covered in chocolate and the rest of my party had an espresso with a lemon bar. All the food tasted like one would expect, but was nothing spectacular. There was not a lot of cleaning up by the staff. Although it does appear that the customers bus their own dishes, there was a table next to my party that was not cleared at all from the time we were seated until the time we left. The floors were unswept as well. I'm glad that this place serves free water, but when there are unknown particles floating in your water, it's a little bit unsettling and disgusting. read more

Friend I was with ordered a salad with chicken and it came with no salad dressing and the chicken extremely over cooked when we asked for a refund the staff seemed to not want to deal with us. 3.5 - One of the few breakfast spots in Oakland that serves a sit down breakfast at 8am on a Saturday morning. There was a good mix of demographics there - from the kids to the seniors...you could tell this is a place where there are "regulars", which is usually a good sign. Place your order at the counter and they will bring your order to the table. There are seats outside in the back for those who appreciate the great Oakland weather. I had the Italian omelette with spinach, mushrooms & Swiss cheese. Also came with toast and breakfast potatoes. The omelette was good but could have been better with more spinach and mushrooms - was quickly fixed with hot sauce and ketchup. Home fries were great - cooked and seasoned perfectly with a crispy skin but soft inside. The highlight of the meal was the latte - I am picky about coffee. It peeves me to no end when lattes taste like steamed milk and no coffee...this was not the case. It was hot enough with the perfect balance of espresso and the froth was not full of air - very creamy. This place has an extensive panini menu - I will come back to try these and will also be back for the latte. read more

I used to live in the neighborhood, however I have only frequented this coffee shop a handful of times. When I have come in, I have been able to find a seat at one of their tables in the middle or by the wall. They also have tables outside in front on the sidewalk. I've always been surprised at how few people are in here compared to the amount of food traffic on Piedmont! That can make it a pleasant location to study or have a quiet chat : ) Their coffee is pretty good, although a bit more than what I pay at independent coffee shops on the other side of the tunnel, but that may be due to the location. Baked good are alright as well and are easy to share with a friend. I haven't had any of their other menu offerings. *Tip: They have their WiFi network name and password on the bottom of the receipt! read more

I like this place but working outside with a laptop is risky here. My laptop was stolen right in front of the cafe as I was working and drinking coffee at one of their tables. I've been in Oakland for 7 years now and I know that you have to hyper aware in some areas, but I had never had an issue on piedmont ave. Just stay VERY aware of your surroundings if you're working on your computer here. read more

On a street filled with independent and chain coffee shops alike, Caffe Trieste stands near (if not on) the top of the compostable heap. For starters, it's cheap. A medium iced latte is a flat $3, whereas the same costs $3.20 at Rooz and $3.50 at Peet's. The breakfast sandwiches are a bit more expensive - $5.50 for a bacon, egg and cheese on an English muffin - but they're damn tasty. Finally, the coffee is good. My latte was crafted in front of me so quickly I didn't really realize it was ready for a few moments. The only weirdness? Jeez! How many tables can you stuff into a small space?! This has been a great addition to Piedmont Avenue. Finally there's a real cafe that serves pastries AND food. The prices are reasonable with a great 2 egg breakfast deal for around 5 bucks. The coffee, pizza and bacon are all pretty good, too. Mostly, though, this is just a nice, comfortable place to hang out with friends. It's a popular place on weekend mornings, so you'll feel right at home if you like a crowded cafe full of people who are actually enjoying each others company rather than staring at their laptops. Thankfully this place doesn't have WiFi! Only problem is there are more chairs and tables than the space can comfortably hold, so it can be tricky navigating to your table without rubbing up against strangers. Poor customer service. I went in just to get some water and when I went to order the cashier tried to charge me more than what I usually pay for a cup of water. As I told him that, that was not what I usually pay for water he in quote told me, "I don't respect you people and, you are not a regular customer". I didn't catch this cashier name but to describe him he had short black hair, with black earrings in his ears. I am completely disappointed by how I was treated and regardless of what persons ethnic background is, no one should feel or be dehumanized and disrespected because of their skin color. read more

Cafe Trieste the former entity was reasonable place to eat. Now, it seems the new management is only interested ( Chiave) to make money at the expense of Quality. Today, I had a Pizza there which by any standards was one of the worse. Simply , it had no cheese and sauces which is main ingredient of any Pizza. I have talked to old guy with hat behind the counter who seemed to be manager. He absolutely cared less as all he said was do you want another one. The dirty dishes remain on table inside and outside restaurant and no one want remove them. The place seems filthy and insanitary. I love this café. The food and drinks are excellent, with nice presentation. It's also a good place to go for anything from a casual brunch to an afternoon treat to a place to sit and do work-from-home. The service is friendly and speedy. You can't beat the ambiance: the music has a retro and European feel, and it's cozy inside and has a great patio outside. Usually I come intending to get a tea and stay for an hour or so, but then decide to get lunch and stay for longer - it's that nice. Please read my review and I am certain that there will be no misunderstanding as to why I will not patronize Caffe Trieste again and why I think it's an awful place: On Friday 3/ 7, I planned to have a cup of chai and finish a few work items at 7am. I purchased my tea, sat down and logged onto the internet. I had only been there once before with a friend in the evening for a cup of coffee and we were never told that there "policies" in place. So, I was utterly horrified when I was approached by a female employee and she asked "How long have you been here?". I was somewhat shocked and took a minute to respond. I told her that I arrived shortly after they opened. She, then, stated that the policy was that I could not be there longer than an hour or so. I mentioned that I really didn't know much about the place. And she said "I am not trying to kick you out but if my manager comes in he'll be mad and I am talking to everyone". But, I didn't see her approach anyone else and I couldn't understand why the manager would be mad at a person patronizing the business. It was so bizarre, I left to end my discomfort and embarrassment. To get further clarification, I contacted the manager (Eric). I explained the incident and stated that I could understand if the place was packed and I was occupying a much needed space but that was not the case. He said that having the internet was a problem and that they were thinking about "getting rid of it". The thought of a manager wanting to solve a problem by denying customers internet access is ludicrous. If Caffe Trieste wants to remain competitive, wi-fi is a must and the manager should know that. I also mentioned that the business should be careful to make sure that only certain people are not asked to leave (yes, I am referring to people of color). He became very defensive and stated that he didn't like threats. Only, I didn't make a threat and if the manager couldn't tell the difference, Caffe Trieste is in bigger trouble than they all know. I told him I was obviously talking to the wrong person and ended the nonsense. Sure you understand, now, why I will not patronize the dump again. read more

I would give this place three different ratings if I could: coffee: 4 bagel: 2 service: 5+ So a few people complained about the service in their reviews, but they must not have met the friendly brunette girl I did yesterday. I came in early on a weekday afternoon after getting a mani/pedi at love nails across the street. I ordered an iced coffee and a bagel with hummus. The coffee was good, I'm not a coffee expert by any means, so I'll just go with that it tasted great to me. Then the bagel came. And it was lame. It was a little extra crispy on top. Like... almost black. And they were trying to hide it with the hummus, those fckers. But I mean, I ate it, it wasn't that bad. I guess. Then the moment of truth came. I stood up to go to the bathroom and i knocked the iced coffee over. The whoooole thing went on the floor, the table, my legs, etc. And let me tell you this was the NICEST staff to handling something like this. As soon as it happened a buser came over and starting wiping the floor. I ran and grabbed some napkins to get the table, but he told me he would get it. The barista then asked me if I wanted another coffee. No charge. Why yes, of course! I was so so pleased that that was her first reaction. By the time I re-milked and syruped my coffee, the floor around my table was (mostly) dry and I could sit my clumsy self back down. No judgments, no angry looks because I created more work, just a free coffee. Thanks Caffe Trieste for saving my dignity. :) read more

I came here on a stormy afternoon with my girlfriend to have some hot chocolate and enjoy the rain. We got to the counter and not having been there for a while, and the menu being partially written in italian, I asked if they had hot chocolate. The girl behind the counter flatly said Yes." As if my question was basic physics and everyone knew that answer. BEFORE I told her that was what I wanted she began making them (which to me is not a great move retail wise). I also got a brownie. Woo hoo. We sat down and my hot chocolate had been barely stirred and was WARM. Not hot. Hence... HOT CHOCOLATE. I debated whether or not to ask them to re heat it. But I figured they had time cuz they were eating on the floor in front of customers. I asked the girl if she minded re steaming it, something I use to do when I worked in cafes, and is a much more time efficient way to get something hot again. She muttered something under her breathe and another co worker laughed. She then sighed loudly and said, "I guess i'll have to make another one". So now I was being guilt tripped for the drink I paid for. Customer Service is not hard. it's all a matter of just being "on" for a a select number of hours during the day. It's not hard to say" oh no worries" or "I don't mind". Before today I wasn't aware how daunting of a task it was to ask something to reheat a beverage with two ingredients.
