My partner was getting some nuclear chemical treatment on her hair down the street so I parked it here for awhile. Right off, I will rarely have anything bad to say about a coffee shop that opens at 7AM and has prosecco, wine and beer on the menu. We could have just come in from an overseas flight and for us it's 9PM. Great spot with indoor seating and outdoor seating along sidewalk. If sitting outside the College side is sunnier in the morning and louder. The Hudson side is quieter and less sunny. Also, there is a parklet on Hudson side. Lots of coffee options eventhough I just take it black. Lots of food options also. I had a bacon, egg and cheese sando on sour dough. No carbo Monday starts on..... Monday. I camped just inside the door to the right at a small high counter with 2 plugs along the bottom. Have to keep the electronics charged up you know. So staff is nice seems the people taking orders new everybody's name as they walked in so totally all locals, except for me. I was here for almost 4 hours on my computer and phone and it was not an issue. There were other people here when I came in and still there when I left. I could spend most of my day working here. As cofffee shops go it's one of the best. Having prosecco and wine definitely pushes this place onto 5 star catagory. read more

Ok so my hubby and bro in love was like we gotta try this place. We did an order for delivery for breakfast at this restaurant which delivered in about 15 mins. My breakfast sandwich was bomb. I had bacon, egg, avocado, cheese, spicy mayo on sourdough. Let me just say the sandwich was amazing and I was stuffed after. The price was reasonable and we had no issues. Don't come here for the food. It's varies from alright to actually pretty decent, but all they've got is a microwave and a panini press so ordering anything with egg may just disappoint you. I'm fine with it, but I am here for the tea and the coffee. Their blends are fantastic! My personal favorite is the Red Sea, but whatever they are serving that day is usually stellar. Their lattes blow coffee chains out of the water. If you like tea, they make the best Chai in Oakland, and maybe even the Bay Area. read more

Caution: People on laptops sitting for hours drinking from their own water bottles take up the majority of the seats & tables. Sadly, instead of enjoying the Hudson Bay lovely ambiance and delicious food and beverages you'll end up teetering along a wall trying to balance and not spill your coffee and food because the people using the cafe as their personal workspace are allowed to take up space for hours. Me and my family had did a take out order for breakfast at this restaurant. We ordered through an app and within twenty minutes the food was delivered to the house. I ordered the green dragon. Adding this place to one of the coffee shops I visit frequently, it has a prominent presence on college avenue dominating the corner it is located on. It has a reasonable amount of seating inside and a good internet connection when you want to set up for work. There's also lots of seating outside, some in less noisy parts if you need a bit of quiet. They have a full range of coffees and pastries, as well as sandwiches and other food types. There is also a selection of wines if that's what you're in the mood for. The decor and layout is pleasant and makes for an interesting place to hang out. I was working here on this day while it was raining outside, it was beautiful looking out the bay window on the corner to the wet and rainy streets. And when I needed to work outside later, to join a meeting where I didn't want the noise, the canopy gave plenty of protection from the rain. Great vibe! Got the Guatemala organic drip with a splash of milk and a standard turkey sandwich with sourdough bread. Wished I could've tried their October recommendation (Ethiopia Limu) but it wasn't available as a drip :( the Guatemala was good though and got the job done as I was doing some work on my laptop. This is a nice neighbourhood spot to grab an inexpensive bite, sit inside or outside and watch the world go by. We sat outside and debated what we wanted to eat. At the counter, I ordered a Reuben sandwich that we could share, and two cups of hot tea. Our order taker was friendly and pleasant, as was the person who brought out our sandwich. The bread was nicely toasted and had a generous portion of pastrami, very much in balance with the bread. The atmosphere is relaxed and casual. If we are in town, this is the spot we visit at least once a weekend during morning dog walk. My husband needs his morning coffee and is in love with the green dragon sandwich there. I usually get my usual decaf over ice, whether it's cold or hot outside because I like to crunch the turbinado sugar from the bottom. Bring your own straw! The line forms out the front door and you can place your order with the cashier. Apple Pay is OK. You can then sit inside or on one of the outdoor tables. During the pandemic everybody was outside and it was a very local scene. Now most people sit inside if it's cold out. Sometimes we order the food for pick up on the app before we leave home so that it is ready by the time we arrive. I usually am outside with the dogs, so I'm not sure if they are letting people into their restroom again. They were not during the pandemic. There is a sign on the door, saying service animals only but I have often seen people walk in with their dogs to order. I guess it just depends on who is behind the counter and how much they want to regulate. Other people tie their dogs up outside while they go inside. There is no dog water bowl here but I also I've never asked. It's an easy walk from Rockridge BART or there is plenty of metered street parking that starts after 9 AM in the mornings or free residential parking. read more

Due to the pandemic, I will be removing criteria that I had added to my reviews, such as restaurant ambience, mood, and wait time. This review will only focus on the dish. Quick Summary: - Sandwiches can be customizable (bread options) - Coffee isn't sour - Music varies between trendy and classic - Stomach content portions It was around lunch time when we decided to stop by here to eat. The line was out the door, but the ordering was quick and the line disappears soon. I ordered a latte, two sandwiches and the avocado toast. I would like to apologize to the staff, who was bringing the latte over to my table. Despite noticing the order and the timing of when it was delivered appeared like mime, but the name didn't sound like mine. ... it's probably the mask and the muffled pronunciations on both sides. I had the avocado toast, and it was really good. I liked how the avocado was spread over like a layer of jam. The thickness was just right for me. I wasn't expecting the sour pucker. I think it was lemon with the salt, but it kept the dish a good zesty pop. I enjoyed their coffee a lot. It wasn't sour at all. There was a nice rustic and round flavor that went well with the dishes I ate it with. The BLT was delicious too. One would assume that BLT would taste the same due to having similar fillings, but this one had more bacon. The bacon was crispy and even though there was more than the lettuce and tomato, it didn't leave the sandwich greasy. The favorite in the dish was the panini grilled cheese sandwich. The cheese stretched in the first few bites, when the sandwich was still hot. The fresh and watery onion gave an extra crispy texture to the sandwich. The sandwich exterior was grilled well, so every plane of the bread was crunchy. I would love to return here to try their other panini dishes. read more

The coffee here is very good. The service is on Chik-fil-A status. Gold star. I stopped in to grab a mocha while waiting to be seated at another restaurant. I ordered a medium white mocha with almond milk. Can I just say delicious!? Oh Em Gee!!!!!!!! I think I paid about $5 for it. My mocha was finished before I could even finish paying. And they offer so many pay methods making it easy and convenient to get in and get out. Now, the staff here is top tier. Like, seriously. They were extremely nice and very helpful in ordering. They were happy to answer my questions and ultimately helped me decide on my drink--I ended up trying something new. I'm grateful for the experience. I did notice they sell food and have a few tables for inside and outside dining. They aren't doing any inside dining as of yet, but I definitely plan to return for a cup of coffee and maybe one of the breakfast sandwiches I saw on the menu. I recommend this little cafe. It also comes with an addicting spicy salsa that I like to dab on top before each bite. This café has apparently been around for more than a decade. The location is great, at the corner of Lawton and College in Rockridge. The food is meh - some limp sandwiches and uninteresting salads - but that's not the reason to come here. It's walkable distance from Bart and all the cute shops Rockridge has to offer. There's outdoor seating. Service is reliably nice. Coffee is decent and plentiful. Depending on the time of day, you may need to compete with the local laptop crew, plunking away at their computers, but tables are typically available. read more

And it comes with a really delicious salsa (it was not as spicy as it usually is today which kinda bummed me out but whatevs). It gets pretty busy during the weekends so there could be a bit of a wait. Props the young folks working the front for doing best they can. I can't imagine dealing with so many people all day long! And props to the back of the house making delicious food and sometimes helping run food. read more

Who in the hell puts raw onions and tomatoes on a grilled cheese sandwich??? Oh yeah, that's right; Hudson Bay Café...... :-/ Whenever I pass by this little café, it's always packed. It's taken me a few years to finally make it over here, but I finally did. The verdict? Pretty damn average. Let's talk about the café itself; cute, casual, cozy, free wifi, yada yada yada. All of the things that you expect but appreciate about your average café setting. They've got a decent amount of tables inside along with one big communal table and lots of outdoor seating too. The barista was actually quite charming. I told him that I wanted an ice chai and he asked me how I liked it. Not many baristas ask so it was nice that he did. They have a decent food menu, mostly sandwiches, salads, and soups. I opted for a grilled cheese sandwich and a tomato soup which actually come separately, but I decided to pair this dynamic duo since it's one of my favorite soup and sammy classic combos. I've gotta say, this entire meal left much to be desired. The chai iced tea was HUGE in size! You'll definitely get your money's worth as far as size is concerned. But the chai was hella weak! So disheartening given the amount that they actually gave me. It also wasn't very sweet at all which is what I requested after the barista asked me how I wanted my chai. They have a counter with sugar and syrups which I happily used, but it still didn't taste any better. It also tasted pretty watered down. I would suggest that you tell them light ice when ordering iced drinks. The tomato soup was actually really tasty. It wasn't super thick, but it was still hearty and it tasted homemade. I enjoyed the little bits of tomato in the soup and the baguette bread was great for dipping. Where they went horribly wrong was with their grilled cheese sandwich. I mean... I guess you can say that this is a classic case of Shayla not fully reading the menu. BUT... a grilled cheese is just that; a GRILLED CHEESE. Why in the hell were there raw onions and tomatoes on this grilled cheese?? YUCK! There was actually more onions than there was cheese! Even after I peeled them off, it still tasted like onions. It was really gross. Wish I had known because I definitely would have asked for them to not put it on there. But, who serves a grilled cheese like that?! Onions with my chai latte??? Hella unappetizing. Even without that horrific grilled cheese, I'd say that Hudson is nothing more than your average local café. I came in for a late afternoon pick-me-up, and I was not disappointed. We just happened to pull over in the Rockridge area and needed some drinks. Hudson Bay was across the street from where we parked, and I thought "Why not?" to myself. I bought an iced americano for my mom and an iced jasmine mint for myself. I don't drink coffee, so I never remember what kind of coffee my mom likes. However, after drinking this, my mom said while an americano isn't her favorite, Hudson Bay's was really good, and it was the perfect drink for what she needed. I personally loved my tea. It had a really nice aroma to it, and the jasmine aftertaste was super pleasant on the palate. The employee who rang me up was super friendly and had our order out in five minutes. My favorite East Bay cafes for working during lockdown - #1, Hudson Bay One of the things I miss the most during lockdown is having a place to get coffee and work for a while - yes, I know I'm not alone there ;) So I'm going to share my very favorite places to work during lockdown - i.e., cafes that have a fair amount of outdoor seating (and preferably decent Wi-Fi coverage too). The Hudson Bay café was a fairly regular haunt for me during normal times, and during lockdown it's running pretty well with lots of safety precautions: Perspex screens, sanitizer, and a window counter if you don't want to walk inside. Staff members were super-friendly as usual and there's always good music playing (it's faint outside, so I could just barely hear The Smiths and The Weeknd drifting out through the side door). One thing to note is that the prices are very reasonable - my veggie burrito cost an amazing $7 (or maybe $7.50) - and it had guac in there too! And it was big! I also had an oat milk latte and a slice of pound cake and the whole tab was around $14. For comparison, I paid the same amount at another place this week for a coffee, cookie and plain croissant. Lockdown Stats: · Seating: There are about 6 tables outside and chances are reasonable that you'll get a spot. If you're stuck without a seat you can hang out on a bench outside the library across the street. · Bathroom: Another good thing about going to Hudson Bay to drink a lot of coffee - the bathroom is open! It's surprising how many cafés have no bathroom availability after selling you a big old cup of diuretic! · Hours: Note that they close at 5 pm at the moment, not 6, but they'll let you linger till maybe 5:30. · Weather: Hudson St. faces southwest, so it's often pretty warm, even around closing time! · Budget: As mentioned above, Hudson Bay is one of the cheapest places around (esp. on College Ave.) to get lunch. I'm also giving the Hudson Bay Café 4/5 "green stars" for social and environmental impact, based on this: · Very longstanding independent café and community gathering spot. · Coffee beans come from McLaughlin roasters in Emeryville - another East Bay staple. · Some of McLaughlin's coffee varieties are organic and most are bought directly from cooperatives or family farms that support communities. · It kind of goes without saying that plant-based milks are available - and raw turbinado sugar too. · The menu is a bit more traditional but there are a few veggie and vegan options. I think they'll also make veggie/vegan mods to a menu item, if you ask, since everything is cooked to order. · There's not a lot of info available about Hudson Bay's sourcing of ingredients - my feeling is that the owners want to keep things as unpretentious as possible. Since it's lockdown I'm not going to bust their balls over it :D · Waste is minimized pretty well, even during lockdown when most places are loading on the plastic. A nice cafe. I dropped by to get a regular drip coffee to go and it tasted alright. The cashier was also friendly and nice. As for the space, the cafe was clean and is on the smaller size for cafes, with a few tables and chairs inside and a couple tables outside on the sidewalk. Some customers were working on their laptops while others chatted with friends, so a good spot to get work done or hang out. It's also conveniently located since it's only a few blocks from Bart. I wouldn't go out of my way to go here, but if your nearby running errands and want coffee, it's a convenient option. read more
