I suspect this place is only getting by due to nostalgia and location. Remarkably bland corned beef hash with leather-tough bacon on the side for an additional 6 bucks. I managed to chew through that bacon, but it was a tough worthy of fork and knife. Speaking of forks, mine came with food already caked on. Yummy. A single diner with a single dish (+side of bacon) and a black coffee for over 35 bucks...Add the tip, and it really starts to feel absurd. ...I heard a lady complaining that her blueberry muffin came without blueberries and it did not surprise me. I've been here twice and both times left underwhelmed and baffled that the place is always busy with people. Low quality food, high prices and small portions. Do not recommend. read more

This review is in response to Business Manager, Kevin C.'s effort to invalidate my criticism of the management of Rockridge Cafe that I posted on Sept. 17. Kevin, Of course it is your job to whitewash criticism of your employer. But you been misinformed. Don't worry. I'm not going to continue this communication much further. But you simply to not know what has been going on. You write: "Several years ago, management spoke with you about your behavior toward a member of our staff and made clear that she would no longer be required to serve or interact with you. " No staffperson ever talked to me about such 'behavior.' I defy you to find any staff member who will attest that s/he did so.' For that matter I doubt you can find one waitperson, except the person to whom made inappropriate remarks -- about which I apologized profusely-- who will say that I have acted discourteously or unkindly to them. I do not believe the people who work at the Rockridge Cafe would so outrageously lie. I'm going to drop this sad business. Cute and casual little local diner that we've been getting breakfast at for 20 years. It feels like the only thing that's changed are the prices. They have classics, we love the lemon ricotta pancake special. The omelette came with a whole lemon scone. The food isn't the most fancy but it's solid and we like it. read more

This place is awesome. Old school diner with an expansive menu, and most things are under $20. The lattes are tall and priced right. Food comes out quickly, hot and flavorful. Service is friendly. What a bad experience! The food is terrible. The staff is nice, a d the setting is cute and quiet... but the food! What is going on? Just terrible. It was $55 for two small breakfast plates, and two drinks (1 coffee and 1 tea). Insane. Even for all that money the food portions were tiny. Like half of a normal adult portion. The potatoes were undercooked and hard, lacked flavor, and honestly tasted like a day old reheated baked potato. The hash was mostly potatoes and peppers with probably 2-3oz of actual corned beef.. which you wouldn't be blamed for overlooking, as it had almost no flavor. All I could taste was those soft peppers and a little onion. My wife's eggs Benedict came out with one of the yolks actually broken out of the white as a hard exploded solid yolk. They just slathered it in hollandaise sauce and said, "okay, ship it out!" Awful. TL;DR: Super expensive, small portions of bad breakfast food. read more

If you're looking for a cozy American diner, this is a great spot!! I had never been here before but something about it felt so nostalgic. I got riccota pancakes, 2 bacon, and one egg. The egg was scrambled perfectly and the pancakes were served with real maple syrup. The pancakes were soo good! I got the citrus sauce with it and it was a refreshing zesty addition to my morning. I'm sore of a picky coffee drinker and the coffee did not disappoint. I had at least 3 refills. My girlfriend got breakfast tacos and WOW they were loaded up. Yeah the overall price for breakfast was a bit high, but I think everything is nowadays. Considering the food quality, service, and location I think the prices are fair. We tried this Oakland cafe on a nice Sunday morning. Meh. I have the Marion Berry Ricotta special, which I was excited to try. Two small pancakes, one egg, and two strips of bacon. Not much value for this $20 meal. The pancakes were fine. They didn't bring much flavor beyond a normal pancake. My sunny-side-up egg was undercooked. Coffee was good (as expected in the Bay Area). Came on a busy Sunday, around 11:00 am. Seated pretty quick, coffee good,but went downhill from there. After a 30 minute wait, the food arrived. The ricotta pancakes were small, and thin, and came out lukewarm. The waffle- also lukewarm. We saw a waffle maker, but Krusteaz frozen look and taste better. One egg will cost you 5.00!! Been passing by this spot for years and finally decided to stop by for breakfast before putting in some weekend work. This is your local no frills down-home kind of breakfast and lunch joint. The Rockridge Cafe has been around for many years and it's a huge community favorite. I always see people eating here whenever I pass by. Dropped in on a Saturday morning around 9 am and the place was moderately busy. Grace was my server and she was wonderful from beginning to end. The interior space isn't anything fancy but it's clean and comfortable. Decided to order the Eggs Hemingway with a glass of fresh squeezed OJ and everything tasted delicious! The OJ was fresh indeed. The Eggs Hemingway consists of two poached eggs over smoked salmon and avocado atop of challah toast. I'd never had a benedict over challah toast prior to this, but damn was it yummy. The smoked salmon was perfect and I loved the flavor of their hollandaise sauce. The avo pieces were fresh and generous, and something about the way that the challah toast just sopped up all of that runny egg yolk and hollandaise sauce made my heart tingle. And those breakfast potatoes?! Yeah, those were tasty too. Shayla is always down with the carbs! For better or for worse. Grace checked in on me and was very attentive during my time there. It was fun to see so many families and couples enjoying their breakfast too. I felt like a fly on the wall just watching everyone eating and enjoying. This is definitely the local breakfast spot in the neighborhood. So glad that I finally stepped my foot in the door. I've been coming here for nearly 2 decades and used to really like it. But the last few times I've been here I'm feeling disillusioned. I'll probably never go back. First, the prices are outrageous (a side of 2 eggs = $7.30...I know eggs got expensive but this is insane) and their dishes are not corresponding to the quality of their food. What's also happened is that they are (purposefully or not) giving you less than what is advertised on the menu. For example I ordered the Rockridge breakfast for nearly $18. The menu says it has 2 eggs. I should've taken a picture but I can say with absolute certainty there was maybe 1 full egg in there? Mostly potatoes. If you Google the photo online of what this dish looks like it is enormously misleading as the amount of eggs in this dish is maybe a 10th of what is in that photo. Lastly when a waitress casually offered me some sort of extra frothed milk option for my hot tea and I accepted, she posted an extra $1-2 for it on my bill! Didn't disclose this would be the case. All of these things together don't bode well for community loyalty. read more

I had an appointment in Oakland, and stopped by the Rockridge Cafe to grab a sandwich to go. I wanted to try their corned beef Reuben, and I got it with a side of potatoes. Their Reuben is corned beef, Thousand Island dressing, swiss cheese, kraut on toasted rye. It's a hearty sandwich, and it'll fill you up. The side of potatoes wasn't really needed, but it kept the sandwich from sliding around in the insulated takeout box. The sandwich is good, but a little on the salty side. Well, that's the corned beef flavor.....a little salty. I would of liked a little mustard for taste. The service is friendly, and I was tempted to eat it there. It's like if a diner married a cafe and had some nice, cool kids who grew up and took care of the family business. There was plenty of seating at 9:30, but there was a line by the time we left at 11:00. Service: 5 stars. Efficient and attentive with plentiful coffee and water refills. Our order was taken as soon as we were ready, and food came out quickly. No rush to push us out after we finished eating and paying the bill. Food: 3 stars. Pretty good. We ordered Eggs Benedict and Eggs Florentine. The eggs were poached to my preference (medium, which is often not what I get when I ask) and fresh spinach was nice.
