My friend and I stopped by for boba after dinner a couple Fridays ago. For NorCal, the boba here was devastating. I got a regular black milk tea with bubbles which was pretty watery and somewhat sugary and lacked a lot of tea and milk flavors. The pearls were mid. My friend got a taro milk tea and he didn't enjoy it because it was definitely made out of powder. A fun hang out spot! Be warned, the sweetness level runs on the SWEETER side! The selling point for me is the smoothies, which sets them apart from other boba shops. I think this place might be the only boba spot in Dublin/Pleasanton that opens past 9PM on a weeknight. That's how we found ourselves here at 8:59PM on a Tuesday night after having dinner in downtown Pleasanton and wanting somewhere to sit and chat for a bit over boba. It was definitely a last resort (we scoured Yelp but were met with many "closing-soon" places). It was empty when we got here so we ordered and got our drinks very quickly. I wasn't impressed with my drink itself and would probably give it 1.5/5 stars. I got the Creama Jasmine ($6.89), which unfortunately only comes in the large size; I was sad because I only wanted a regular but this is usually my default order for when I'm trying a new boba place as a control drink. I got 75% sweetness (my usual level) and 25% ice. They definitely delivered on the less ice but I felt the drink lacked sweetness; I guess their standard sweetness levels are already moderately sweet. The creama was not great; it was oddly super salty, wasn't sweet, nor did it have much of a cheese flavor. It was also very thin and basically distributed itself into the tea below without much agitation. I'm used to (and prefer) a thicker, creamier, sweeter creama. The shop interior was nice and had a good amount of seating. We occupied two of the four stools by the front window and two other parties were at the booths and middle tables by the time we got up to go. The lighting was bright and warm and there was music in the background; this made for a comfortable setting for me and my friend as we sat and talked until they closed at 10PM. I certainly would NOT come back for the drinks (at least, definitely not for the jasmine creama). It was audaciously pricy for a below average drink--nearly $7 for a tea with no toppings. However, given that this place is open 7 days a week from 11AM-10PM, I might find myself back here if I'm catching up with a friend and we want somewhere to chat after dinner on a weeknight. read more

We came in on Sunday night looking for an after dinner pick me up. The interior was cute with the merch wall and games. I was excited to see almond milk tea because nobody makes it anymore. My husband got a passion fruit milk tea. Both drinks were great, think 2000's TapX without the powder. Why the 3 stars? The young lady working the front didn't seem to be thrilled to be there. We walked in and she was on her phone and looked annoyed that we stopped her from whatever she was doing. I placed my order and her response was, "what else?" My husband needed a minute and after he placed his order again the response was, "what else." She then turned the tablet around for payment. Another guy made my drink and he called it out and she made the passion fruit milk tea and just put in on the counter without word. To be honest we almost walked out because the reception was so cold. I don't expect everyone to be always be happy at work the entire time but if you're attitude is so off putting that you're making people want to leave before they even order that's a sign you need to work in the back or go home. Since there was no one there, the employees let us walk up to order for convenience. T Ordered the basil popcorn chicken (they have other options of popcorn chicken but all 25 cents extra for sauces basically), calamari, and a large jasmine milk tea. The wait was about 5-10 mins for them to make the food. After a 10-15 min drive home, the popcorn chicken was already a bit soggy but flavor was pretty standard to Taiwanese fried chicken. The calamari had a bit of thicker breading, so it stayed crunchy a bit better. I would say their snacks are a bit cheaper than other places so pretty decent for the price! The jasmine milk tea was a tad on the sweeter side and tasted a bit artificial (not a very strong tea flavor). The main reason I come here is for their fried tofu. They aren't always consistent with the amount of sauce they put on it. Probably my favorite fried tofu dish in the tri-valley. Also tried the calamari, it almost had a mozzarella stick type batter and wasnt completely cooked inside which for the calamari i dont mind (rather under than over) but the batter made it mushy. Also went with medium spice which was not spicy at all but rather REALLY salty. Prior reviews warned of customer service. It is definitely lacking. I did not expect to be welcomed with a warm hug but the place was completely empty and the younger asian girl that gave me my stuff rudely asked from a far "do you want a bag" as she slammed my stuff on the counter and walked off without the slightest care for my patronage. This was my first time back at Cafe Tapioca in years, I'd gone a few times back then to try some drinks but never really liked the flavor personally. I really wanted to like the drinks here because they are an OG for boba places in the area, family owned and here since 2003 which I can appreciate as a local who grew up here! I will say the store is always clean has lots of seating and even some games that you could sit and play. The staff always was kind when I came in too which is very nice! Fast forward to now, I had noticed I got an email from them the other day about a birthday gift to receive a free regular Royal Milk Tea which is a very nice offer that they have for their clients. So I thought hey why not give it another try! I unfortunately didn't really like the flavor of this drink either it was kind of plain to me and the boba seemed like it was maybe a lil bit old. We been coming here for a few years with the kiddos. Sometimes we sit and do some work and watch people come in and out. They have tons of regulars here, which tells you this place is well liked. Always either get the avocado or the papaya smoothies. Both very good and you know they use fresh fruit because they are sitting in a clear fridge for your inspection. 50% sugar and it really isn't too bad for you. I could even drop it down to 25 and still enjoy it. Really nice people here, and I think i've interacted with the owner a few times.
