Note to fellow reviewer Jennifer, whose review seems to focus more on other Yelpers than on Café Soriah: If 90% of people think a place is just okay (or worse) and you think it is God's gift to the culinary world, perhaps 90% of people aren't clueless snobs - maybe you just don't have very good taste. Food for thought.
Café Soriah = just OK. You heard it here.
On the plus side, I consider the food at Soriah to be pretty good most of the time. Fresh, tasty produce is always a winner with me, and Soriah usually succeeds on that front better than most local restaurants. The meat and seafood are less impressive to me - I often feel as though I'm being shortchanged in terms of either quality, portion size, or both - but I find them acceptable, though I always find the practice of shaving two ounces off the portion size to keep your food cost down abhorrent in restaurants that sure don't shave anything off the price to match. Come on, folks - it's beef, not Beluga.
The preparation of the food is...unambitious. The kitchen staff has some culinary chops and isn't bad by any means - I see little hints of excellence here and there - but it is consistently mediocre. The composition and execution of Soriah's food is usually competent enough, but I have never once felt impressed...unacceptable, to my mind, considering the prices Soriah charges and the hype it often receives. Overall, the food itself is an iffy value proposition at best.
The front of the house doesn't help any. While I have received excellent service on some visits, I have to agree with other Yelpers; I generally find it somewhere between okay and abysmal. Café Soriah has an upscale atmosphere and a relaxed, unhurried vibe and isn't the kind of place where I expect or even desire that my entrée be served in 5-15 minutes, but I'd like to order a bottle of wine or get my water glass refilled without having to get up and find someone or call a waiter over from another table. I've found one waitress to be outstanding; she knows the food and provides good ordering guidance, brings everything you desire quickly and pleasantly, keeps you updated regarding your order, and even remembers my name. Too bad they can't clone her.
Soriah's waitstaff includes too many "it's all good" types who will get to you when they get to you, not when you want them. I don't want to sound unreasonable, but when six or more tables are tipping the waitperson $20+ each for 90 minutes of service, the service has to live up to the price, and it often falls far short. The waitstaff at Café Soriah often gives the distinct impression of being conceited and unconcerned - so much so that I don't recommend it, despite the reasonably good food.
If I had to describe Café Soriah in one word, that word would be COMPLACENT. You might want to check it out given the dearth of fine restaurants in Eugene, but prepare to be underwhelmed. read more
