This review is based on environment and ambiance. Don't live in Bakersfield, but I make it a point to stop here either on the way up to SF or on the way down to LA. That should say it all. Found this place years ago (check my photo credz) when I worked in the area. Came in and it was a fresh cafe with a more coffee/drinks forward than food like they have now. The staff has always been friendly and supportive when deciding on menu choices. They bring your order to your table. That has always been a staple process. This allows time to go search for one of the hot spots where you can plug in your laptop and do a work from "new" home situation. They have built the back patio area into a flourishing garden and workspace. Also with many outlets for convenience. The food is spectacular from breakfast to lunch choices. My favorite highlights: Moroccan Eggs or the Snitzel Ceaser Salad Highly recommended as this street area around the cafe has been steadily building and genderfying out. The scones were delicious. My husband's breakfast burrito was average. The negative review is for the Moroccan eggs, or shakshuka. First, the dish is served in a metal bowl with handles that comes out SCREAMING hot. Although they warn you it's hot, it's incredibly dangerous to serve like this. When reaching around to get a piece of toast, which is served behind the bowl, my forearm grazed against the handle and singed me. I now have a lovely little blister forming. I am not a litigious person, but there are many who are and who would happily sue for injury. Strongly, strongly recommend they stop serving it in this vessel before they wind up with a lawsuit they can't afford to battle. Furthermore, the shakshuka itself is so piping hot that by the time you're able to actually eat it without scalding your mouth, the eggs are overcooked. What are supposed to be nice and runny eggs in this dish were like rubbery hockey pucks with solidified centers. I was really looking forward to eating here after all the reviews I read, but it ended up being a very disappointing (and injurious) experience. I don't live in the area, so it's not like it's a place I'd otherwise avoid, but management should take note and make changes to ensure the safety of their customers. read more

This is the third time I've been here. The first couple times were during a production weekend over a year ago. It's still an awesome place to beat the heat. They even run AC in the bathrooms (which totally matters). Got a matcha latte, iced latte with oat milk and two breakfast burritos. The burritos were nice and healthy, not greasy at all. The other day I was sitting by the window, cradling a matcha latte while watching the dark clouds roll by. It's a beautiful place with wonderful people and great food. There arent a lot of places where you can do that here. Their food is fresh and local, the price is worth the quality. I ordered a waffle here, and it was the best waffle I've ever had. Perfectly sweet with an array of fresh fruits. My goodness. I appriciate the location as well. They have a large parking lot and there are little stores within walking distance. Owner Stasie went above and beyond with being available to coordinate prior to the event, review menu options and pricing (affordable compared to a few other places I had looked into) and truly exceeded my expectations. The back half patio provided the perfect place to host our shower and we were able to bring decorations, flowers, and gifts in 30 minutes beforehand. It comes in an iron cast pod, and I really liked the sweet tomato flavor - I ended up eating almost all of the breads by dipping into the sauce! The eggs were perfectly soft and delicious as well. The chai latte was really smooth, sweet, a little spicy - overall very good drink, this was recommended by the hostess! The cucumber pickles were well prepared and fresh with crunchy texture. This is a difficult review because I've enjoyed the food many times but the service and inappropriate charge with no credit is just wrong. On May 3rd two of us ordered a meal and a tea each. The food was delivered along with 2 teas. I was then approached by the waiter because I was not charged for 1 tea. I looked at my online receipt and noticed they charged me for 3 meals and 1 tea. It's an honest mistake so I asked it be corrected. The gentleman said I would get a credit in 2 to 3 days and he didn't hand me a credit receipt. Imagine two fried eggs with halloumi cheese, a couple of savory items, paired with fresh cucumber/tomato salad and hummus as well as sourdough on the side- omfg it was heaven sent. Never have I ever had such a dish but it was delightful. The matcha latte at Smitten is a gently sweetened green tea treat that can be served cold or hot. Perfect caffeine alternative when you don't want something as strong as espresso. They do a fantastic job of whisking the matcha, which is not a hard take but many cafes who don't appreciate matcha overlook this detail and you end up drinking clumps of it. You'll enjoy it, I promise! There is a back and front patio with huge free parking lot. I recommend coming earlier in the day as it can get very busy and food may take 30-40 mins. Such a cute spot in downtown Bakersfield with great outdoor seating both in front where the parking lot is, and in the back courtyard. We brought our dog here and the staff immediately offered to bring our dog water. We got a pumpkin spice cold brew which was kind of sour, and a maple iced latte which was a little sweeter. We mixed the two at the end and that was good too! We had shakshuka aka eggs in purgatory and the only thing that would've made it better was if it came with more bread to mop up all the sauce.
