a table set for a meal

We live down the street, so obviously we treat this place like our Spanish godparent's house. We walk in and the staff's like "Ah, it's you again" but in a good way. It smells like garlic and destiny. One time I ordered something at random and it came out sizzling like it owed me money. The paella has that "quit your job and move to Valencia" energy. It's never packed, which makes me suspicious in a New York kind of way. Like - why isn't everyone here right now? The vibe is quiet, but not in a creepy library way. More like "we've got tablecloths, but we're still chill" energy. I've never seen anyone in a rush, and honestly, I respect that. Makes us feel like I'm on vacation just a couple of blocks from our laundry room.

Hidden gem! Can't believe we lived here for five years without ever coming by but now I can't stop dreaming about their octopus and Valencia paella. The service is always gracious and kind.

A beautiful bottle of a very crips refreshing bottle of white wine from Spain

On a very rainy night Comfortable seat at the bar. Having one of the 3 special on their menu Very professional old school set up great staff of 2 that are always very friendly Mussel fresh and plenty the sole delicious with either a side of rice or broccoli I had the rice. And flan was the dessert It's a go to for a single person dinner romantic one with someone special or larger party's the place is very inviting once inside. Don't let the old outside fool you.

Ate here today for dinner after work on a cold, windy and rainy Tuesday night. This was my first time eating Spanish food. I had tried, chose, ordered and ate by starting off the bread with butter first, soup of the day next as an appetizer, then have paella valenciana as my main course and finally had flan for dessert. It was really good and delicious. The service there was really attentive and friendly that I didn't feel rushed about what to choose and pick for the first time. The ambiance of the restaurant was really quiet. I couldn't agree more. Finally, I would definitely eat and come back again next time! :)

Good Spain food, better than anything we have locally. Took the trip to Jackson Heights on a Thursday for dinner with a few guys. Service is incredible+++, restaurant is nice inside. Prices are good. Parking stinks, but I think there is a public lot right down Northern Blvd. Started with: - tapas of filet mignon bites (more like two thin slices of filet in a delicious mushroom/pepper sauce) - garlic shrimp - very good - soups, incredible garlic soup and tripe soup - baked clams Salamanca were ok, not crisped, but clams were cooked nicely - snails of the day were nice - chorizo Salamanca was very good, sliced thin and easy to share - octopus was the hands-down winner, melt-in-your-mouth served on a wooden plate - Paella Valenciana, was ok, too soupy, but flavor profile was on - bone in chicken was delicious - stuffed lobster was really good - they are little guys, about a pound - sides of potatoes were maybe once crisped, but maybe kept under a dome as they were a little soggy at the table Guys said the house made sangria was good. For desert, the tres leches was the winner, the the cake was ok, the flan not so much - too much caramelization perhaps?

We had a lunch for our staff here recently. The place is clean and spacious. The staff was very nice. I ordered the skirt steak medium and got a sirloin well done. I plugged through. Was asked about options for sides. I chose potatoes. They were potato chips. That was a plot twist. The calamari was good. The sauce was better. People in the group liked the paella and everyone who had lobster seemed happy. Coffee tasted like coffee. I was conflicted about how many stars as I think the very large group affected the kitchen some and the wait staff was great as were the appetizers. I erred on the higher side because of those factors. People in the group had snails and we're happy with that choice.

The flavors are light and play on your tongue leading to the shameful overstuffing of your stomach. But who goes to a restaurant looking to leave half-full? Not I! Take heed to my words: do not eat all of the warm, crusty delicious bread that they give you, free of charge. Leave space for your entree and save the bread for dipping in the sauces that come with your food. Main entrees include a simple green salad and we each received a complimentary, small order of mussels in the most wonderful, savory salsa. Lastly, order the Sangria pitcher-- I prefer the red. Service is stellar from the minute one enters to the final exit with mints to freshen your breath and an umbrella holder. Try the signature lobster, or fish, or the paella which comes in a cute personal pot (but is enough for two to share). You cannot leave without having their Spaniard coffee or dessert! It is an absolute must ending to a great meal. Give it a shot if you're in the area!

Boquerones

Arrived here as a group of three on a Wednesday evening without any reservation. Thankfully no wait to get a table inside (no outdoor seating to speak of) as we settled in towards the back. Lots of things to try here between the three of us: Trio of Mussels (free) - served with a tangy tomato sauce that got the appetite going Warm Bread/Butter (free) - a large basket of soft bread that was hard to not dip into the various other dishes Datiles con Bacon ($8) - basic bacon wrapped dates, good flavor and not overcooked Pulpo ($16) - a large portion of grilled octopus in a vinaigrette, a bit chewy but good flavor overall Cod Croquettes ($10) - about ten pieces of lightly fried potato/cod mashups. Only a hint of cod in the dish and could have used a better texture balance Boquerones ($8) - a small plate of skinned anchovies swimming in garlic and vinegar. Good flavor here and the saltiness is offset by the garlic Sangria ($27) - large pitcher filled with fruit and red wine; more sweet than strong I believe I missed some items we ordered from the above but those stood out the most. Service here is helpful as they took time explaining dishes and remade a couple that fell flat. Definitely a spot for a gathering if in the neighborhood.

Sangria!

The food here is great and very authentic. I had the paella Valencia and the portion was HUGE. The paella had good flavor and I brought home leftovers. Why they didn't get 5-stars: The decor is a little dated and blah. They're going for a Spanish feel but it could be updated. Their paella had great flavor but it was a little wet and the same dish as the arroz con pollo, which makes it feel in-authentic. The day we went they had someone playing guitar for the crowd, but he would stand at the table and made eating a bit uncomfortable.

The food and cocktail were not commensurate with the prices. The Rotisserie Chicken was moist and tasty, and the portion was huge, but the green sauce was too spicy for me. The chicken stood well on its own. The filet mignon in the Lomo Salteado was not seasoned. It was so bland that not even the extra salt that I added could fix the taste, but the Yucca Fries were outstanding--especially when dipped in some green sauce. The Arroz Chaufa with Shrimp also let me down. It tasted like slightly rancid oil was used to make it. The shrimp did not taste fresh caught, either, and the chicken was pitifully dry. The Pisco Sour left a lot to be desired although the foam on top was decorated nicely! The place is large and well decorated with Peruvian masks on the wall. The waiter provided good service, and the owner was walking around the floor, managing the place, but I AM ONE AND DONE! I will not be back!

Why 4 stars? Because these arepas were different, but enjoyable…read more --- --- --- To-date, I apparently have only had Venezuelan arepas and wasn't aware of how different Colombian arepas were. Colombian arepas (or at least the ones here) come with a sweet, corn tortilla and are more open faced: to be eaten with a fork. In the past, I've had flour tortillas that are designed more like a taco and eaten as a handheld. So despite the differences, I (and my friends) enjoyed our meal. Let the official record state, I ordered the arepas con queso with chorizo. We had plans to eat our way through Jackson Heights, but because a couple of the places we planned to visit were closed, we actually just mostly hung out here and enjoyed our arepas of the sweet and open-faced variety. It was a good afternoon.

Before this, if someone mentioned arepas, I probably would have confused them with pupusas, which I'd only seen at street fairs and thought of as more of a sweet item. I had no idea they came in savory versions too. I went with the carne asada arepa, and the beef was fresh, juicy, and cooked just right. It's so common for places to overcook little chunks of beef, but here it was perfect. Each arepa is big enough to split between two people, so the price feels very fair. The filling was generous, with beef packed inside and even overflowing out the sides. They also serve the arepas with a rack of five or six sauces to choose from. Some were spicy, and one had a sweet condensed milk flavor if you like a mix of sweet and savory. My go to ended up being this green mayonnaise sauce which I assumed was like some sort of a lime mayo, which added the perfect tartiness to the rich cheese filling.

It's a fairly large restaurant. We ordered cocktails, few tapas and the steak. I would've ordered another entree but they were out of dish after dish that I would've tried.. well it turned out to be enough food since the omelette dish was so dense and I filled up on bread. The best dish was the shrimp with garlic tapa which I usually wouldn't bother ordering but I've already tried most of the menu. Lots of garlic. Really tasty ..dipped the oil with the bread. We were sitting there for a while, waiting for our drinks and other food but nothing came out so I wanted more bread since I was starving. My first meal that day. One the guys brought more bread for us quickly. The steak and omelette finally came. I would never order the omelette dish but L wanted to try it and it was tapas Tuesday so there was a slight discount. Very bland. Not enough egg, too much potato, very dry so we spooned a lil of the garlic oil from the shrimp dish and it helped a lot. I had a lil but L ate the rest. Salad was good but it was overdressed. The steak was a lil bit bloody in the middle even though we ordered it medium so it wasn't as good as we had it before. We still didn't get our cocktails because the bartender lady kept making margaritas which were only $5 that day instead of our $17 drinks. Someone came past 7:30pm and our waitress said he was gonna make our drinks. The drinks were pretty good but we already finished our food. Usually I would have ordered one of each cocktail at Sala but I was full and had other places to go. The slow service and the unavailability of certain dishes has impacted my recommendation to others but I still like the drinks here and we did enjoy the gambas tapa dish a lot..
