One of my favorite Senegalese restaurants in Brooklyn. For appetizers we ordered the calamari, it was nicely fried and the dipping sauce was great. For the main meal we ordered the steak sandwich with salad and fries. Their salad dressing is one of my favorite. I have come here multiple times before and their food has never failed. I was a first time visitor to cafe rue dix, and had never tried Senegalese food prior. What an introduction! Everything we tried was delicious, from the drinks to the mains, to dessert. I had the baobab juice, and the thiebou jen, which the menu said was the national dish of Senegal. The fish was cooked so well and the jollof rice was so flavorful. The side vegetables were also cooked perfectly. The atmosphere was inviting and our waitress was very attentive and helpful when explaining menu items and recommending dishes. Will definitely be back! Vegan Perspective: I am the vegan of the group and Cafe Rue Dix is a great place to come if you have dietary restrictions. I ordered a side of plantains, the ginger queen drink, and Attiéké Bowl. I was pleasantly surprised with how many options I had when trying to order. The menu was clearly marked with vegan, vegetarian, and other options. The plantains were perfect and the drink was so tasty, definitely one of the better ginger cocktails I have had. The Attiéké Bowl was so flavorful and I loved the onion dressing. The atmosphere was great and the place is so cute inside. I heard about Cafe Rue Dix while dream picking at Martine's Dream. I was told if I was looking for flavorful food and good vibes then Cafe Rue Dix was the place to visit. A Senegalese - French restaurant their food packs a punch in flavor. I got their spring rolls which were flavorful and juicy I loved the vermicelli noodles that were inside along with the super delicious meat filling that dipping sauce was also good and all the flavors really work together. I wanted to try some authentic Senegalese fare and tried the theibou Jen. It is definitely very hearty and filling. There is a ton of flavor here from the veggies to the sauce that the fish is covered in. My only qualm is the dark parts in the fish ( also known as the bloodline -due to ruptured blood vessels in the fish ). It's not something I have enjoyed eating and I ended picking it out leaving most of my fish on the dish .My mother would be ashamed as I've always been told this is the best part of the fish and I should consume it. However, i have never been able to get over that strong fishy flavor that those dark parts carry. Other than that the thiebou jen is really delicious. Perhaps on my Next visit I'll see if I can request a piece of fish with minimal blood line. But I will definitely be back to try other dishes and their coffee which I have heard is also legendary. read more

I came here on a Sunday evening for dinner. I was excited to try Senegalese food. You have to order everything at the window and then you can sit at any of their outdoor dining tables and they bring everything out to you. Their prices are mid-high range with each entree being between $20-30 and cocktails about $12. They automatically charge a 12% service fee so our two entrees and two drinks came out to $84. The service left a bit to be desired as our cocktails came after our entrees and we had to ask for more water and still required more than we got. As for the food, I got the lamb chops which were the thinnest sliver of meat I've ever had. It tasted good and came with maybe a half cup of couscous, con fit onions and plantains. The plantains seemed out of place in the dish but again everything tasted good but not particularly like the cuisine of a certain country and definitely not work 20 something dollars. read more

Decided to give this place a try for brunch. Really cute little French Senegalese spot in crown heights. My friend and I ordered the steak sandwich and the Green Eggs along with coffee and hibiscus juice. We went around 2 pm on a Saturday, so I was worried that there would be a wait, like most places, but luckily there was no wait and we got seated immediately, which was awesome. The ambience is very cute, but quite tiny, so probably won't be a great idea for big groups. Also the menu had very few items to choose from, at least for brunch. However the food was delicious Really enjoyed my steak sandwich and my friend enjoyed her green eggs. The service overall was pretty good. It's a very laid back atmosphere. The food was incredible. tried the mafe (stewed beef with peanut sauce) which was so tender and its sauce was not very peanut buttery at all, I think it was tomato based and was so rich and complex. I also tasted the thieboudienne which was also similarly tender and juicy and would please any seafood lovers/those who like more dank and fishy dishes. Very very nice. I had the tuna burger which was well cooked but I would have preferred a more hearty bun. Overall, the food was great. HOWEVER, I think they were short staffed that night or something because our server rarely checked on us and some of our items arrived late/or never came at all. The Theibou Jen is the national dish of Senegal, so of course I had to give that a try. It's a red snapper stew red with veggies over rice. Be sure to stir it up because there's a little ball of (what I assume was) tamarind paste to cut through the flavors. I accidentally took a bite of it, and it was sour! The stew was nice and hearty. Healthy chunks of fish (watch out for bones though), and loaded with veggies. Great over rice (which was a very short-grain seasoned jollof rice, I think). The gambas (shrimp) were gigantic. I assume tiger shrimp? Really showing my ignorance of African cuisine here, I know. Cooked perfectly with head on and everything (that's where the flavor is!). Served in a sauce with a mild kick. Five to an order was plenty! And lastly, I got the beef Fataya, which for frame of reference, is kind of like an empanada. It was good, but the Scotch bonnet sauce on the side really did the heavy lifting on the flavors. And holy crap, was it spicy. I've always been a fan of Scotch bonnet sauces (like Queen Majesty's), but this sauce knocked me on my butt! All in all, a very delicious meal (that lasted for two days). Worst Experience Ever A colleague made reservations for our team to have our end of the year celebration at Cafe Rue Dix. When we arrived, our table was not ready. When we were finally seated, the waiter was busy at the bar flirting with two female customers and couldn't be bothered to take our drink order. It was also very cold and drafty in the restaurant. Due to poor customer service and the fact that we were freezing, we decided to leave. The restaurant charged my colleague $70 and said it was because we canceled our reservation, which was an untruth. We didn't cancel, we left due to poor service and atmosphere. This place is nothing short of extraordinary. It has good coffee, a good bar, a good atmosphere, and affordable & amazing food. I've been multiple times and every time I'm blown away by the quality and flavor of the dishes I ordered. The Mafe plate was huge and I enjoyed it for lunch and dinner the next day! This is a spot I want to come back to again and again to try as much of the menu as I can, which is something I don't say often. I agree with the other reviewers that the dynamic with the staff is sometimes awkward and hard to read. I'm a huge fan. I recently came to this place with two of my girlfriends. What a treat! We actually sat inside for the great ambiance and music playing, but then we moved to the outside seating to have more room on the table because we ordered so much food. Literally everything on the menu sounded amazing. If you have a craving for a braised beef stew, or fish or a refreshing take on spring rolls, this place is on the money. There was not one appetizer or shared main course that we did not like. The flavors and textures were quite different. I would suggest you go on a Wednesday just like my boyfriend and I did because they have a prix fix menu on Wednesdays and you can get an appetizer, entree, and dessert for $32. Totally worth it! I loved everything about my meal. I ordered the beef fataya as an appetizer and I really enjoyed it. It's just like an empanada. I didn't try the sauce it came with, but my boyfriend did and he warned me that it was super spicy. For my entree I ordered the Dibi Senegal (lamb chops), which comes with a serving of rice and fried sweet plantains. It was delectable. For dessert I got the creme brûlée and it was delicious, but the portion is huge so don't expect to finish it! I'm not complaining though because I love sweets. Overall I really loved the food here and I'd definitely recommend and come back to try more of their food. I heard they have good brunch selections so that's on my to-do list. I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 because the music was really loud and I felt like I had to yell at my boyfriend the entire night and also the restaurant is really dark so you can't really see your food well. This little Senegalese-French restaurant is one of my favorite eateries in town. I love it so much I fear one day it'll go the way of so many other gems in the city due to crushing rents. Everyone, please go spend your hard earned dollars here. Here is where fantastic, make-your-tastebuds-explode kind of memories are made. Start with Fataya, a flaky meat pie described on the menu as an empanada, which it basically is. I always spring for the veggie version, which comes with a delicious spicy pesto sauce that spikes the richly flavorful filling in the most satisfying way. Don't get overly ambitious with the sauce though, it's definitely on the higher end of the spiciness scale. I also recommend trying the Tiebou Jenn, a traditional Senegalese dish made with stewed fish, yucca, eggplant, carrots, peppers and cabbage over brown rice. The vegetables and fish have soaked up a deeply flavorful broth. Even the brown rice is so savory and spicy that I always go back to my plate for another spoonful, long after I'm uncomfortably full. There's an apt Cantonese phrase that translates to "My belly is full, but my mouth and mind are not yet full." It's basically the opposite of the sentiment in the song "Bump N' Grind" which I realize I'm not supposed to reference anymore. Moving on... On the menu you can also find your usual French fare, like tuna tartare and Moules Frites, but I'd come back for the Senegalese dishes every time. The ambience is very cozy, and the music is always playing at a comfortable volume. I can easily see this being a date night spot or a place to catch up with an old friend. Even in the hottest days of July, there's no AC. The entire space opens the windows and doors so that the wind blows through this shady corner restaurant, and I am then transported to the continent of Africool. I've never had Senegalese food before Cafe Rue Dix and now, on warm summer weekends, brunch here is always my top suggestion. Service is cool and laid back and the food comes hot and quick. My go-to fave is the Omelette Bohemian for Brunch. It's packed with goat cheese and mushrooms and comes with a side of their delicious salad. When I am not so much of an early bird and make it for lunch instead, I get the goat cheese and beet salad. Still delicious because of their dressing. I've never asked what's in it because sometimes you have to leave good and well alone. Their grilled tiger shrimp, the Gambas a la Plancha, are out of the world. Out of this world. These shrimp are large and in charge and come packed in a group of five drizzled with the tastiest of sauces, this one a little spicier than the one they use for the dressing. They currently are offering indoor and outdoor seating. It was a rainy Saturday when we went so we opted for indoor. Seems like most folks had the same idea as inside was bustling and lively. Had brunch here this morning after a spin class nearby, amazing! The food was so incredible, I got the croquettes duck confit, it's the perfect breakfast. It came with a huge salad that was seasoned perfectly and a dipping sauce that to me tasted like it has scotch bonnet, but I could be wrong! Our drinks were also amazing. A friend and I decided to get dinner at Cafe Rue Dix on a Saturday evening. I actually had not heard about the place prior but just searched restaurants near the area that had great reviews. Cafe Rue Dix caught my attention being that it was a French-Senegalese restaurant and I hadn't been to too many west African restaurants in the area. I got the Rue Dix burger and shared a side of plantains and the food was absolutely delicious. When I come back I definitely want to try more of the traditional cuisines since everything on the menu looked tasty. I really like the ambience inside; it was dimly lit with candles and Madvilliany in the background. The servers were also very nice and attentive. I had two Jardin de Senegal's after seeing a picture of it from a fellow Yelper. I knew I had to have it and boy did it not disappoint! If it weren't $12 a piece I would've had five lol. Bursting with flavor, it is the perfect balance of sweet and sour and the addition of the basil is the perfect touch. As an entree I ordered the Spicy Stew chicken dish (forgot the proper name of it). It was a large portion that could have been shared by two, but of course I ate all of it lol. Very impressed by the brunch meal my friend and I had here. We got there ready to eat and started off with the Senegalese Spring rolls. Made fresh to order so they're piping hot (watch your tongue). These are delicious, with a mix of savory & sour, crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside. We ordered 3 brunch entrees: kale cupcakes, green eggs and salmon, and French toast. Can't judge the kale cupcakes as that was my friend's entree and I wasn't interested. But it came with this hot sauce (pepper sauce to me), that literally needs a warning on the menu. It's HOT AF. Beware. Greens eggs and salmon is a play on the salmon Benedict (my fave) with a nice spicy sauce on top and smashed avocado underneath. Last but not least the French toast. Hands down best French toast I've EVER had. It comes with this vanilla sauce instead of syrup. Light crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Legit mouth heaven. The waiter gave great recommendations and even provided options on how to make a spicy dish less spicy. For an appetizer we had the Senegalese spring rolls. They were really tasty and had a nice kick. I had the Mafe, which is a spicy beef stew in a peanut sauce, over a bed of rice. The dish was tasty and very filling. The dish was not as spicy as I expected it to be. My best friend had the Yassss Guninar, which is roasted chicken with onion stew over a bed of rice. She enjoyed her meal but I believe the chicken could have used more flavor. But I will admit I did not try the onion stew and the chicken together. Overall, I would come here again. Beebs and I have been meaning to try this place in Crown Heights for a while but for some reason, we waited until last Wednesday to try it. Turns out that on Wednesday nights they have a "Taste of Senegal" menu that offers a 3-course prix fixe for $32 dollars. Pretty good price and if you keep reading, you'll understand it's so worth it! It's a small (make a reservation!) and beautifully decorated space that also has a full bar and coffee area. We were seated right away at a table. The tables are close together so if you want to be isolated, this is not for you. We had plenty of space because it was the day before Thanksgiving but I can see this place easily being packed any other time. They have a beer and wine menu but also some interesting cocktails. I really liked mine and would be down to try the others. So this is what I really liked about the prix fixe option- for $32 dollars, each person gets three courses. Not pay $32 each and share an app, have your own entree and share a dessert. Each person gets their choices and they are full sized ones! For our first course, I had the beef Fataya, which are spicy empanadas served with a side of Senegalese hot sauce and Beebs had the Senegalese Spring Rolls, spicy vermicelli beef & shrimp rolls over kale leaf. LORDDDD, these empanadas and the hot sauce, BOMB. I immediately was kicking myself for putting this place off for so long. If you don't like spicy food boo for you but if you do, get some and save me one. The spring rolls were delicious and crunchy. They came with this beautifully tangy sauce that upped the flavor. The second course, we had the Thiebou Jen which is stewed fish and vegetables over rice. It's known as the "National plate of Senegal". A simple composition of items that are not over the top but the dish was done so well- great flavor, good portion and fresh. We also had the Dibi Senegal, which is grilled lamb chops, onion confit and sweet plantains, served with rice. OOOO these lamb chops were so juicy and tender. Please just get them! For the third course, Creme Brulee and Caakiri, couscous pudding topped with shaved almonds. Both were divine and the perfect way to end a fantastic meal. Don't be like me. I've been to their attached store, Marche Rue Dix, before -- got an excellent, luxurious bath bomb -- so I knew to expect quality food and a quality experience. I was not disappointed. For indoor dining during the pandemic, you have to reserve online in advance. For outdoor dining, which I prefer, you can just show up, order at the window, and take a seat in their heated outdoor space. My friend and I both ended up ordering the same thing for an entree: the Dibi Senegal. Grilled lamb chops, onion confit, sweet plantains, and a choice of rice or couscous (I decided to try couscous). We also had a pot of tea to share (chose the green goddess tea, a blend of green tea, strawberry, raspberry, and rhubarb) and finished the meal of with the beignets. Everything was splendid. The texture of the onion confit and crunchiness of the sweet plantains paired well with the savory notes of lamb chops. My only substitution would likely be to get the rice next time; I was missing that sturdier, starchier texture in the couscous. The tea was fruity and mellow and I'd definitely recommend, and the beignets hit just right at the end. The food came out rather quickly and it was, overall, a great dining experience during the pandemic. It wasn't too crowded when we were there since it was a weeknight. On July 22nd, 2020, I had lunch at Cafe Rue Dix. This was my first meal out since COVID and was excited to try this Senegalese restaurant. Unfortunately, that excitement soon went away. The food we received tasted nothing like the Senegalese food I had and loved in the past. We left all our food uneaten after a few bites. However, things got much worse when I took a bite of my lamb dibi and found hair in my food. I was disgusted. We waited and waited for our waiter to return and when that never happened we left. I felt sick to my stomach and couldn't take it anymore. Unfortunately, this restaurant forces you to pay for your meal before you receive it, even for dine-in, so they already had my payment. I immediately, after leaving, called the restaurant and spoke to the manager, who accused me of putting my own hair in the food and refused to refund the charge for our meal, even with photographic proof and a note on the receipt concerning the hair. This was a horrible dining and customer service experience. read more
