Everything is to go these days, Monet is offering family style so it's reasonably priced French Coq au vin and other special French dinners, we had Boeuf Bourguignon, last night. It's Just going to be 2 of us for thanksgiving this year. Glad to see Monet is offering a great Turkey dinner with all the trimmings for 2 people, as well as for the regular families of 4 and more. I would not recommend this place, with Groupon they really does not do justice. In the Groupon they states that entry up to $29 each, they have 2 menus prices on each entries and they serves you small size which is basically half of the price and half of the food of whole which is around $25 and they did not let me have rack of lamp which was $29 dish. We had salads which did not have fresh vegetables and ingredients were not very good.. Crab meat was like straight from a can, served cold and it had shape of can when it came out. And 2 entries which were small portion and beef was overcook and hard, duck was okay medium, but vegetables came with it was not very good. I had cafe latte for drink and finished off with ice cream with sorbet (which definite was not worth $8 like menu priced portion was very small). Do not waist your money on this Groupon deal. They topped off with $18 tip automatically as well, even service was not very good. One point it took about 10 minutes just to get waiters attention. We were seated on other side of restaurant where no other diners were there and waiter was in the other side most of the time (there was 2 side the restaurant). Price is little over priced and food was just not up to the par with price on the menu. This was a great surprise in a road filled with lame choices for brunch. The portion sizes were good since we were starving. If you are really hungry, don't go here! The salmon in pastry was great. We ate here on a Groupon deal and enjoyed it very much, although it was more leisurely (2 hours 15 minutes) than we wanted and we had some difficulty getting enough water (surprised they do not just give you a bottle, especially as their nice, but too small waitstaff is overstretched). The bread and salads were good (although the regular menu price of $12 per salad is high). The coq au vin, duck and hanger steak were all very good and very ample--the Yelper who stated that Groupon diners receive the smaller size of certain entrees is mistaken. Tried this place once for lunch. Besides the watercress soup(which was amazing), i was disappointed, I had salmon - it was overcooked and not fresh. Salmon should not feel chewy and heavy. I still don't understand the bed of parley salad it came with. Who eats parsley salads. The parsley definitely was not meant to be a garnish, but served salad style with a vinagrette dressing....weird. Maybe dinner would be better. The menu looked like it might be. I recently held an after wedding brunch for many of my wedding guests who stayed over. I chose Café Monet because I had read some good reviews! However, I would like to sharply differ with anyone that wrote anything positive about this establishment! The owner was unbelievably nasty. He had one waitress and himself for over 40 guests!! Half the guests had finished their meals before the other guests had been served!! The menu was to include an arugula salad with pear, brie, pistachio and chicken. The dish served had no pears, no pistachios and the chicken was overcooked! The entrees were supposed to be accompanied by fruit, cheeses and croissants and rolls! No cheeses at all were offered, and they didn't even provide whole croissants and rolls! They simply cut up a few and stuck them on a plate. The fruit consisted of about four bite sized pieces of fruit on skewers. Additionally, there was supposed to be a selection of coffee, iced tea, lemonade and non alcoholic Virgin Mary's. Only coffee and plain tomato juice and water were displayed on the restaurant counter. When I complained, the owner curtly replied that the guests should have asked for them!! I guess he thought they were clairvoyant! And he offered a literal spoonful of the creme brûlée as dessert for each guest. In total, with a forced twenty percent tip plus tax he charged us over $2,000!!!! He completely ruined the end of what should have been a very happy occasion. Anyway, the woman at the front desk is very strange and kept saying weird things to us, and even said 'I bet you are going to on on Yelp and tell people that I am weird' .. and that was the smartest thing she said all night. because she was very strange. The waiter, the same. I felt more uncomfortable eating here than anything. There was construction going on right in front of the restaurant, which I am sure they had no control over, but it didn't help the evening. Hanger steak was not good, the duck appetizer was not good, the salad was not good and the dessert was not good. the only thing that was good was my company and the bottle of wine we brought. don't waste your time, or money, at this place. The owner, I think Tracey is her name, is very cool and doesn't get crazy like some other chef/owners when customers give sincere feedback. She came to the table after I made some comments about our meal to the server. I had the prix fixe dinner which include an escargot app, steak frites and a chocolate pot de creme. The escargot was cooked well, not rubbery from overcooking and the sauce tasted as you expected, buttery and herbaceous. But they topped the snails with a puff pastry. I didn't get it. Puff pastry is so buttery already and the last thing I wanted with snails drowning in butter is more butter! I discarded the pastry and used crusty bread, which was awesome. The steak frites were good, cooked well. No issues here. The chocolate pot de creme was interesting, it had cinnamon in it. Personally, I think it'd be better without it but I can see how it would add an additional dimension. Certainly not a bad thing. This is the third "French" brasserie, bistro, cafe that I've been to in the past couple of months so far I still can't find the WOW factor I'm used to seeing in hole in the wall places in Manhattan. Then we discovered that the menu was a "special fathers day menu"...aka less than half the regular menu. AND it was $29... twice regular px, AND it was so... mediocre. I'm so... let down. I only wish that I had the courage of conviction to get up and walk out as soon as I saw that menu and knew i was about to be double charged for half a menu and substandard slop. It's a shame. We have not been here in a while. We're very happy to have stopped. We've always had great meals here. The service is very nice. You're not being rushed, even if we're a large party who overstay after having their meal! Today was sept bit they're still having a Bastille day special menu plus daily specials. Loved the ratatouille, which wasn't a mush but u could taste all distinct vegetables. Escargots were very good. So was the steak frites. Always go for the duck. Today they had a duck confit as special which was divine. Do manage to make room for dessert. The berries with champagne zabaglione was so light & delicious. Tarte tatin didn't disappoint and the ice cream which came with it was lovely. We should come by more! In addition of good food, it's a BYOB, so you don't hVe that extra expense. This is a cute french bistro and it is quiet however the food is sub par. My wife and I went here for our wedding anniversary on Saturday. I had the frisee salad to start. The lettuce was wilted and old. I sent it back. My wife had a very plain beet salad with goat cheese for an appetizer. There was no dressing on the plain beets so it had no character. I had the chicken cordon blu as a main course. It was overcooked and not very interesting. My wife had duck which I tasted. Again it had no seasoning or sauce that I could taste. It tasted very plain. The deserts were a little better. We had chocolate grenache cake and a sort of chocolate moose. Had dinner on a weeknight with a guest. The menu did not resemble anything that was shown on their website and limited to a few apps and entrees. Beef bourguignon, coq au vin, roasted chicken and most of the menu were not listed on the piece of slate we were given to order from. Our apps were escargot ($12) that were prettier than they tasted - served in a cute platter with a touch of pastry baked on top of each of the six. A little overcooked in my opinion but my guest said they were adequate while declining to finish them. They were offered to me or to be sent back to kitchen. Adequate was generous. I had the duck liver mousse which was tasty and served with a few greens on the side and two slices of toasted bread and nothing else on the plate ($14). The ($25) entrees were duck confit and duck breast. She could not eat the dried confit and I traded my duck breast with her. The duck breast and confit both came with two fingering potatoes and a few julienned carrots. The confit was hard and dry and only edible with a swallow or two of our wine. The duck breast was cooked well done, skinless, sauceless and seemed like it had been steamed or perhaps reheated in the oven. We were looking for a salt shaker to add some taste to the entrees. Also of note: I brought wine and asked about the tasting menu ($90) they advertised that paired five courses with your bottle. Wine sight unseen - we were offered one option -- cod, rib eye, house soup, house salad and dessert. My guest had the creme brulee and liked it. Dinner check $95. The waitress did not speak English but I gave her an A for effort, attentiveness and being extremely pleasant along with a $30 tip. This place is not worth the money. Overall, the food was either bland (the skate) or fatty (beef special). A few of us ordered the smoked rainbow trout. That is the wrong name for this dish. It should be called "Bed of lettuce with hardly anything else." This dish is supposed to have blood orange and avocado as well. It ended up being a huge pile of lettuce with 1 small sliver of avocado, and 2 regular orange slices. The smoked trout was 2 very tiny pieces, which bore a striking resemblance to the frozen smoked trout from Trader Joe's. We were not impressed. read more

My mom and I decided we were going to catch up and have a girls afternoon. Decided to go to this french restaurant we've passed by several times. We split the trout omelet special and the pear & brie arugula pistachio salad. The salad was quite good although it could use a few more slices of pear to justify title. The trout omelet was not good at all - we joked that the trout must have swam away because we could not find it. It was also under cooked so inside was runny. My mom & I actually both became somewhat ill 1/2 hour after eating it. I would also recommend that they add ice to the tap water that they serve to make it a bit more refreshing on a hot day. Overall, we have several other places that we like more and maybe this place was just having an off afternoon but we won't be back. read more

Very disappointing. The service was slow and somewhat incompetent. 40 minutes between the first two courses, 25 minutes between the second course and the entree. My wife spilled her glass of wine on the table, so the waiter threw a few paper towels on top and walked away, leaving it to us to mop up the spill. They never removed the wet towels; the entrees were served on top of the soaked paper towels. Unbelievable. The food was mediocre at best, with several dishes not coming out as described in the menu. "Bouillabaisse" was a few pieces of seafood in lemon juice. "Cassoulet" was a piece of chicken on top of beans. My "sous-vide" lamb had none of the texture that sous-vide should impart, and was served on a bed of cold couscous. The escargot was dry. (Shouldn't a French restaurant use butter?) French fries tasted exactly like Burger King: starchy on the outside, mush on the inside, and overly salty. I'll overlook a few mistakes, but this place did nothing right. read more

Went on a Tuesday night at around 8pm, we were the third party in the restaurant that evening. Ordered the 'tasting menu' option and we really liked the option, food presentation and taste. The service was attentive. The decor is very nice and comfortable. It might be noisy on a Friday or Saturday night but on an off night it was peaceful. It is a BYOB. Apparently, a couple of nights a week they have live music, jazz and a harp player. They also do breakfast and lunch but do not take credit cards for those meals. They do take credit cards for the dinner meal. We will go back, no doubt. read more

'Kitchen Nightmares' in real life!!! Just got chased out of the restaurant by the angry French chef/owner... "Get out of my restaurant!" What a memorable experience...wow! Family of 4, trying a Groupon for a local eatery. We live in Short Hills, figured we'd try to support a local business...love French food, what could go wrong? Wobbly chair, slow service, no menus, no water, glasses & silverware that looked like they were rejected by Goodwill. Finally got a friendly server, luke-warm tap water and menu cards that looked like they'd been thrown out from overuse at a diner... hmmm, not off to a great start, but hey, let's give them a chance. Server explains: of the 3 courses listed, we have nothing on course 2. Okay. Also, we don't have the duck pate starter (uh, okay), or the beef liver as an entree, uh, fine. Isn't this French? Oui. Arugula salads were boring w/very little arugula and even less dressing - not a very good value at $12, mushroom soup (not on menu) was actually very good. Escargots was very good as well. Things are shaping up... Main courses: well, lamb was overpriced ($27), and small portion, the downfall was the potato on the side - stone cold. Informed the staff, a new potato au gratin was to come. Eventually it did - cold as well - a little melting on the outside, but cold inside. This is important as it sets off the chef... hey, it's cold - I didn't serve it, i just stuck my finger in it and dared the server to do the same. One bite - cold o take it away. Okay, the hanger steaks the kids have are fair enough, but the sauce is odd, and takes away from the flavor of the meat - not a good decision. The french fries are a little greasy, and the veg is inedible. My duck is fine, it's cooked and warm, and the side of carrot/asparagus/bean is passable - I obviously picked the winner - not too much inedible fat either. Desserts go horribly wrong. Although we order (and see the table next to us eating) creme brulee & apple tart, we wait and find out several minutes after ordering that sorry, we ran out. I get the feeling the owner isn't quite being truthful. Fine, what do you have? Well, 4 more of the dessert menu items aren't available, so it's "what have you got?" time... Well, scoop of vanilla ice cream, fresh berries, warm chocolate cake, or profiterol. Fine the kids will have profiterol. uh-oh. The profiterol looks okay, but that chocolate looks a bit thin, like, really thin. Kids (who love profiterol) take a bite and give an odd look. What's up? Daddy, you try it. Uh-oh, that pastry is OLD - crumbly and old, like from a freezer-burn old. The chocolate isn't really chocolate either - it's like some kind of really nasty Hershey's-in-a-bottle chocolate-like substance that isn't even warm. The creme is odd too - no kids, put down the forks, let's just get out of here. The server comes by, I show her the awfulness of the nasty pastry, and yes, "I agree that doesn't seem right, what about something else - I want to make it right". Okay, now there's a chocolate mousse cake w/vanilla ice cream available. Fine, 2 of those. Well, edible, but nothing to write home about. Like something you might get in business class on a second-tier airline... eh. Then we wait for the bill. And wait, and wait. What's so hard about calculating an 18% gratuity on a $95 groupon. Let me just give you $20 and we'll go; but no... While the server is calculating ahoy, the chef comes out: "is this the customer who complained about the potato?" why yes I am. "I have no microwave here!" Fine. I never said you did - I just said 'throwing the potato in the microwave would have been an improvement over what was served - twice'. "I have no microwave - I took another potato from another customer to make this right for you!" Fine again sir, but look mate, you failed. It's still cold - not as icy as the first, but just not right. I guess sometimes the customer is just plain wrong - you eat that cold potato and you pay me for it and like it! Wow. He retreats to the kitchen, but then the bill is finally ready. "Okay, that's $13 tax, and $35 tip, and if you just pay me $48.50 cash, you're all set." Seriously? What's going on? I thought I paid for "4 salads, 4 entrees, 2 desserts, 4 hot drinks" for $95. "well yes, you did, but then there's tax and tips that are calculated on the "food value" of the items ordered. What? Oh, the "real price" that I would never pay for because I got a Groupon prices? No. I need to understand... Before the server can begin to break it down, out pops the chef again - angrily for all the other guests to hear "GET OUT OF MY RESTAURANT!" The server is embarrased, I'm confused, the other patrons are in shock - "GET OUT! I don't care about the tax & tips - just GET OUT!" Seriously?
