Here for anniversary dinner again and they did not disappoint. It was another fantastic meal. I got the Mussels in white wine sauce for appetizer, and it was cooked perfectly with a sauce that i couldn't stop sopping up with the garlic croistini and the fresh bread on the table. My wife had the very refined carrot soup. For entree i was so happy. Excellent duck breast with apricot sauce. It melted in my mouth, full of flavor. I ate every bite even after i was full. My wife had the New York strip steak that she loved, and raved about the garlic lime compound butter on top. This time I endulged myself with chocolate mousse for dessert, which cannot be beat. It is the perfect dessert. We got the Peach Melba with the table side preparation which was enjoyable. I think this is the best restaurant in Westfield for sure. read more

A few years ago I had the pleasure of dining at Chez Catherine for a special occasion and it was a memorable meal. Dinner started with a complimentary amuse bouche of toast with brie, jam, and microgreens which was a nice surprise. For starters we shared the Pan Seared Foie Gras and the Steak Tartare which is made with raw diced Black Angus, shallot, garlic, parsley, Tabasco, Worcestershire sauce, mayonnaise, and croutons. Both were delicious. We also tried the escargot in garlic and parsley infused butter. While I personally prefer my escargot tucked into puff pastry hats which is a quirky preference, I know my boyfriend at the time thoroughly enjoyed them. For mains we had a beautifully cooked rack of lamb, a flavorful confit duck, and a mushroom risotto. While I found the entrées slightly under salted, the flavors were still wonderful and the cooking was spot on. We finished with two desserts which were a silky creme brulee and a perfectly risen souffle. Both were outstanding and worth saving room for. Overall Chez Catherine is a charming choice for a refined special occasion, 'old school' traditional French meal. First time at a French restaurant and Chez Catherine did not disappoint. Started off with the risotto as an appetizer before going with the Osso Bucco for a main course and finished off with strawberry soufflé for dessert, all delicious. My wife had the squash soup, the seared duck and also the soufflé and also raved about her food. Or waiter Milan was great, making us laugh all night and making sure we had everything we needed. My wife and I have been patrons and huge fans of Chez Catherine for nearly 30 years. Last Friday, we happily celebrated our 39th anniversary there with another very fine lunch. It's always a pleasure to be greeted like old friends by owner Stephane Bocket and seated at what we think is the best table in the tastefully decorated, elegant restaurant. We both chose the prix fixe menu. For starters, my wife had the always terrific moules and I a lovely mixed salad. We both chose beef bourguignons for our main course and asked Stephane to suggest wine from the by-the-glass list. His selections of a chablis for my wife and pinot noir for me worked perfectly with the outstanding bourguignons. We finished by sharing a delicious Baba au Rhum, prepared by Stephane at tableside. Dining at Chez Catherine is always a special event to us. Everything about it is first class. If you are unfamiliar with Chez Catherine, it has been one of New Jersey's Top 5 restaurants for nearly 40 years. Friday 6:30om Someone got my mom a gc for her bday and she decided to bring me with her to try the restaurant. Though it's a commute from the city , I'm glad I got to try the restaurant but also share the experience with my mom. There aren't a lot of 3 or 4 course meals in nj ( that I know of ) and it's nice to see this level of restaurant. We had the 3 course and got the risotto , seafood tartar, diver sole , cote de boeuf , soufflé and chocolate mousse. I had a nice glass of sav follows by a Pinot noir . The place is traditional french , small , cozy ( perfect for a formal date place ) , the service is great ( it's a white glove restaurant) - gramercy tavern like and feel . While I enjoyed the experience , I'm a bit concerned the longevity of the business . I don't know if maybe because it's a summer Friday but the place wasn't too full . I did jokingly asked / recommended that they make the place more of a bagatelle place ( vibey , trendy ) but I also understand that they want to keep it more traditional and is probably the draw for the older schooled customers . Sometimes restaurants have to adapt and try a different concept but if they've been open this long , then maybe they're doing something right and I understand the demand . I would come here for a special occasion , they offer prix fix for dinner and a la carte during lunch which I wish I knew prior to making dinner reservations. read more

Great experience here, would give 4.8 stars. They have a good drink menu with mixed drinks and wine. They offer a limited menu but it was delicious. Service was personal and unrushed. 1. Mussels - Delicious broth, not too much volume. 2. Escargot - Not as oily as I've had at other places but still very good. 3. Dover sole - Prepared and filet'd in front of you. Been in the area 21 years and as long as I've known about this place I've wanted to go there but never got around to it until recently. Very expensive. 300+ for two people who didn't drink. I got the 4 courses (includes cheese which should be on any French table) and my partner got 3 courses. From start to finish, food fantastic. Service nearly but not totally perfect. What's lacking here is ambience. It's very stodgy, stuffy. Fancy 1983 decor with half walls and drop ceilings. Tiny house. Music choices were head scratchers. Should be all French music to infuse the place with a French mood. A badly needed infusion bc nothing about the decor says "French food 300 bucks please!" The decor says Garlic Rose in Cranford. This oddly impacts the "experience" which for 300 bucks (did I say that already?) matters. The waiters were French accented. Were they Canadian? Who knows. Very nice. True what another reviewer said about waiter making the same jokes to all the tables -- the place is so small that you can hear all convos and discussions, so, to me, that is NOT intimate. It's too quiet (cue some music) to have any type of private convo above a whisper. Will we go back? I think so. With the right crowd. The food was very very special. The location (almost like part of the hotel and on a busy road with mysterious parking in the back) and the ambience detracted. read more

Posting as a formal review: We just left your restaurant and I have to tell you, we were extremely disappointed with the service and the food. We had to wave down someone any time we needed something, the wait for menus was ridiculously long, not once did a waiter check on us to see if we needed anything or to ask how our food was, I personally ordered the scallops and was brought 3 scallops and 4 string beans- this is insane, especially for what we paid. We returned to Chez Catherine to celebrate our 21st wedding anniversary during the easing of the Covid virus. They did a nice job of setting up for alfresco dining and providing some low key ambiance. Service was consistent throughout the night. The menu was more limited due to Covid and the warm weather. I went here for my graduation, and was not disappointed. I had a risotto to start which was very good but nothing to write home about. I then had the foie gras which was fantastic. The richness of flavor it had was excellent. I then had the steak with potatoes, and while New York strip isn't my favorite, I thought this was still a very solid steak (I like fattier cuts like ribeyes). The fingerling potatoes were creamy and delicious which made them a well executed side. For dessert I had the crème brûlée which was tasty, but again it was nothing to rave about. I will say though that I tried my sister's cheesecake and that was fantastic. Good service overall, but I asked for a refill on my soda and simply never got it, so that irked me. Just an FYI. Cocktails are good, wine was great, lamb chops were perfectly cooked. The owner/manager's humor was dry smartaleckyness, a good juxtaposition to the elegant, intimate ambience - a reminder to enjoy the finer things, and have some fun too. One patron started with the loud hotshot talk, clearly looking to impress his date - staff noticed this quickly and ran tactical interference to distract and de-escalate him, while she sat there looking slightly embarrassed. It was so flavorful but at the same time fresh and not too heavy. I actually loved my vegetables more than my steak, they were so good! The service was kind and not too intrusive, while still checking on us throughout the night. We chose this place because I wanted to eat crème brûlée and it did not disappoint. A must go for crème brûlée lovers! We asked for recommended wine pairings for our meal and they gave us a glass for everything, excellent pairings. I went here December 20th, 2023 to celebrate my mother's 60th birthday. The food was delicious ! I ordered the duck and would highly recommend the duck to everyone. The skin was crisp to perfection. I've been to this restaurant twice for dinner and had great experiences both times. Our server made delicious recommendations and was happy to try escargots and Sole Meuniere, classic French staples, for the first time. Their menu is prix fixe with a choice of 3 or 4 courses. I chose a 3 course menu both times and was satisfied with the portions. They start you off with delicious bread and butter. The bread was crusty on the outside and doughy on the inside and will gladly refill your basket throughout the meal, a plus in my book! Between courses they serve amuse bouche. The summer bite was dried apricots stuffed with blue cheese. Delicious! I chose escargots for my appetizer which were cooked in butter and parsley. There is plenty of melted butter left over for some bread dipping. The first time I went I ordered their duck breast. It was a substantial piece, both flavorful and filling. My friend got the sole and knew I had to order it when I went back. They prepare the sole table side in brown butter. It is a cool production. I don't typically order fish but I would order this again and again. All the flavors of the dish combined great together. The potatoes were crispy on the outside and even the vegetables on the side were cooked to perfection. I highly recommend this dish. I ordered chocolate mousse for dessert, a must try for chocolate lovers. The whipped cream is homemade and decadent on its own. I hope to come back and try other desserts on their menu. This is really my first true introduction to French cuisine, and overall some very high hits and some very low misses. Keep in mind that the menu does change seasonally but I think my comments are insightful. The service is very upscale and the waiters are very attentive to what you may want or need. Lots to commend here. Let's get to the food. The amuse bouche was light, fleshing, and not overpowering. It had scallops. For my first course, I ordered the risotto. Rather disappointing. It was too dry and severely underseasoned. I added a lot of salt. The vegetables were cooked wonderfully but the rice was quite bland. My second course was the roasted chicken with asparagus and couscous. This was quite tasty and beautifully done. The vegetables were crisp. The chicken skin was delightful and the couscous was draped with a lovely sauce. A+ For dessert, I ordered the creme brulee. Adding lemony mango to anything is not a good idea.
