It was a Saturday morning, which means a perfect time for brunch, especially since i'm a visitor to the area. After debating on several options in the area, the cousins and I decided on this restaurant for our meal. PARKING + AMBIENCE There is a two hour limit parking lot area for customers of the businesses in the vicinity. You can also find street parking around the neighborhood, although it was packed with cars bumper to bumper when we arrived. The restaurant is spacious with a lot of seating outdoors and indoors. It was a sunny day, so the restaurant was oozing with light and an enjoyable atmosphere. FOOD The portions are gigantic, their entrees are shareable between two people. I got the DelMar Crepe and barely managed to finish it, I was absolutely stuffed after. The DelMar Crepe ($15.95) is topped with hollandaise sauce with a filling of crab cakes, spinach, red chili avocado creme, fontina cheese, and caramelized onions. The flavors were savory in my mouth, I liked the addition of the crab cakes, which made for a unique crepe! A side of breakfast potatoes is included in the dish. In addition, their selection of hot sauce is a plus. I used two different hot sauce for my potatoes and crepe and they both hit the spot. The extra hot flavoring made the an already delicious meal even better. SERVICE We were luckily seated immediately when we arrived because there were plenty of people already dining away. The waitress was super friendly and attentive, she was personable and made nice small talk. CONCLUSION Cafe M is great, I recommend them for anyone looking for brunch in the Berkeley area. Everything on the dish was delicious, from the crepe to the potatoes, this is a classic brunch dish with a bit of unique ingredients. Cafe M serves all the traditional brunch items, so you can choose from your favorites. They met our expectations and then some, definitely a spot I would return to. read more

We got the Irish Benedict, crabcake Benedict, and coconut French toast! Everything was delicious and decadent!! We were in a hurry, so we couldn't sit and eat, so we had to eat as we drove in the car! Lol the poor puppy was squished in the back! Lol I will definitely be back to try all of these delicious brunch items again, but next time I'd rather sit down and eat them, versus cramming us in the car. Lol read more

Pretty good breakfast option in the area! We ordered their Crabcake Benedict and Irish Benedict and both were pretty good. The portions were pretty big. Coffee was good too and they refilled my cup before I was dry... which is always a plus. No problems in the service dept. I would be back if I was in the area! read more

What a massive disappointment. Ordered Crab Benedict- super dry, super small crab cakes of 90% breading. Eggs poached well (highlight), but there were no scallions or red peppers like the menu stated. Nothing but egg, 'crab' cake & sauce. Boring & bland. Thankfully I asked for avocado (extra $3). So I paid $30 (with tip) for a lame Benedict & average drip coffee. #moneywasted read more

First time here over the weekend, and I can confidently say this is my new favorite breakfast spot to come to when I'm in town! Came here on a Sunday morning around 10am, and we were seated right away. I'm glad we got there when we did, because an hour later as we were leaving we noticed this place was jam packed!! Server immediately brought us glasses of water, didn't have to wait to be asked. I ordered the Crab Cake Benedict (served with potatoes); sooo delicious! The French toast is also a MUST order, soo yummy especially with the cinnamon butter it's served with! My daughter loved the chocolate chip pancakes, and we all left full and satisfied. :) read more

Visited this popular Berkeley brunch spot for a birthday lunch during the weekend. Thankfully a friend told me there is quite a line build up especially during the weekends. This place has the yelp waitlist and thank goodness otherwise we wouldn't have come on a rainy day with three of us hungry. I ordered the cafe M salad and added on salmon. I wish they had just a salmon plate because it was delicious. I could do with less beers and cucumbers though. The other two ordered corn beef hash. Sometimes at other restaurants there separate the parts which makes it more flavorful. We enjoyed there grapefruit handle of mimosas to share though! read more

I've been coming to Cafe M for three or so years, and I love it! It's situated in the heart of the 4th Street Shops area, but is ironically closer to 5th Street than it is to 4th Street. There is plenty of outdoor seating options under the awning and umbrellas, which provide an alfresco dining option if you are so inclined. When you step into the restaurant inside, you're greeted by its deep interior, high ceiling, and floor-to-wall windows. It has a varied menu, but my favorites to get here are the Berkeley Hills Scrambler, Coconut French Toast, Aztec Huevos Rancheros, and double-shot pomegranate mimosa. My go-to is the Berkeley Hills Scrambler, which is extremely filling and is able to power me from breakfast all the way to dinner (yes, I can skip lunch! It is that filling). Service is always hospitable and friendly. I recognize some of the staff here because of the length of time I've been here, and I greatly appreciate the seemingly low rate of turnover. It means that I'm able to consistently enjoy the same great service since I first started coming here. As with most brunch-oriented restaurants, Cafe M is less busy on the weekdays and pretty packed on the weekdays. Luckily, it features Yelp Reservations AND provides free wifi so that you can use it if you need to wait outdoors (and continue using it when you're inside the restaurant). There is a "baywheels" bikeshare station right next to Cafe M. The parking lot is free as is the streetside parking on 5th Street, but spots are usually pretty hard to find. There is metered parking on 4th Street. All in all, I highly recommend Cafe M. It's got great service, great food, a great atmosphere, and sports little touches like free wifi that all add up to being a great dining experience. read more

One of the best cafe to have breakfast/brunch! I stopped by on tuesday noon. Lukily, there was no line! I ordered Combo Breakfast and Delmer Crepe with a friend. They are big enough to share with 2-3 people. You can choose pancakes or toast, omlet or scramble egg, ham, bacon, italian or chicken apple sausage when you order Combo Breakfast. I chose toast, scramble egg, italian sausage and they were amazing! The interior of inside cafe is not enough fasionable, but dishes are great! （This is why l choose 4 stars.） I'll be back when i'm in the area. read more

This place had surprisingly good food. I'm never really impressed with breakfast spots, because the food is always mid, but this place sets the bar for breakfast. I got the crab cake crepe, and added an over medium egg inside, and it was I was praying that the crab cakes were fresh and not frozen, and they were homemade, with real lump crab meat. The coconut French toast was amazing, and so were the mimosa's. The coffee was top tier, and it was better than any cup of Peet's or Starbucks that I have had! Beautiful little cafe. Has an abundance of outdoor seating, shaded waiting area, and great service. Bit on the pricier side, which isn't a problem if not for the fact that the food lacked flavor. Not my favorite and probably won't be back but I recommend bringing some seasoning with you if you eat here. We got two pancake combos with a side of potatoes and there was a lot to be missed. Not buttery, soft, or sweet pancakes. Potatoes were plain, and the apple sausage was too crispy. read more

Not sure I'm quite the fan as most people who've reviewed here. The hostess wasn't very friendly, her affect was actually a little off putting and at first I took it personally, but as we were waiting for a table realized that she was the same toward everyone. Our server was great, super attentive, made some recommendations and checked on us regularly. But the food was very average. I'd probably come back for the bottomless mimosas and a basic brunch experience, but unfortunately, there's nothing to rave about. read more

Cafe M is a fantastic brunch place, especially as they are one of the few brunch places in the area that offers bottomless mimosas. Sadly, since my latest visit today, they have increased the price to $21 and are putting a limit of 5 glasses per person. Not quite bottomless anymore, but their glasses are quite big and I never drink more than 3. Still gets me tipsy! I've always enjoyed their food; today I ordered their Del Mar crepe while my friend ordered the Crab Cake Benedict. It seems to me they've changed from using the English muffin to using country sour levain bread (I don't recall them using the latter in previous visits) but it was still good, according to my friend. I really enjoyed the Del Mar crepe and the thinly cut and crispy potatoes. I did think that the potatoes weren't salted enough for me but some use of Tapatio on the side did the trick. Solid 4/5- reliable brunch in Berkeley. read more

I'm not typically a huge fan of brunch or breakfast in general, but Cafe M is the one place I'll look forward to for brunch. Their chorizo scramble was probably one of the best breakfast items I've ever had in my life. The portion sizes are huge. I was starving, but I still couldn't finish it. It was a mountain made of egg, chicken, and chorizo topped with cheese and an English muffin. There was a thick layer of crispy, sliced and perfectly seasoned potatoes. Places that serve brunch usually charge a lot for their entrees. Although the prices here are similar, they definitely make it worth your money. 10/10 would come back. read more

I went to brunch on a Sunday at Cafe M and overall it was great. I don't have children but my family was visiting from out of town. My sister has 3 little ones and I'm so glad we went here. This place was more kid-friendly than I could have expected. There was a Yelp waitlist. I put us on there and let the hostess know we had 7 (6 is the max on the waitlist). We wandered around and got a text when the table was ready. The food was great. I had the Country Omelette, others had the Blackstone Benedict with avocado added and the Del Mar Crepe. The kids had cheeseburgers from the kids menu and a egg and fruit for the littlest little. The Blackstone Benedict was everyone's favorite. TIP: Definitely add avocado. It makes it extra tasty. I was a big fan of the potatoes each dish came with. They were super crispy and delicious. I don't usually love breakfast potatoes but these were good. The portions were generous without being so huge that you leave tons of food behind. The staff was really nice and attentive even though it was clearly busy brunch time. read more

I wanted to check out the 4th Street Shops to kick off our weekend trip so Cafe M looked like a popular brunch spot. I was worried it would be busy since it was Saturday but we were seated right away, and we were in and out in about a half hour! The service was good and the food came out super fast. We went with their top two - stuffed French toast and crab benedict. My crab benedict was very flavorful and the hollandaise and poached eggs added even more to the dish. It was served on top of toasted sourdough which was too crunchy for my liking, even with the egg yolk and aioli, so I didn't get to eat that part. I did enjoy their thinly sliced potatoes which were different than the usual cubes. Although food tasted good and service was efficient, I'm still giving it a 4-star. I don't think it was worth the $30 price tag for the amount of food we got. read more

Awesome brunch selection! Love their crab benedict, very delicious. Creamy. If you are a fan of crab cakes, you would definitely enjoy this. The cornbread pancake was also interesting, never had anything like it - that's two in one. Crunchy on the outer part but just like cornbread as you eat it. We topped it blueberries. Yum! Orange juice was extremely fresh, not sour at all which I really like. Some places have intensely sour orange juice which can get me cringe. However, I did not enjoy my cappucinno as much because even with 3 bags of sugar, it was still so bitter. I wasn't aiming for a super sweet cappucinno. This would definitely be for you if you like your drink strong and bitter. Customer service was good, the server was slow at first and it took a while to get our order and food, but it was also pretty busy. After our food was out, the server was being more consistent at checking on us. I'd definitely return here for another brunch and possibly dinner. read more

Came here with a couple of friends... this is my third time coming here..finally had a chance to sit down and write a review.... the first few times I came here.... everything was pretty good... If is a long wait... but we already knew that coming here... so I didn't ding them on the wait time to get seated if all the times that I came here... Food is good... my friends tend to get the egg Benedict... I have yet to try, but I trust their judgement... So the reason for the 3 stars... came here on a Monday... and it a long time to get our food and the restaurant was pretty much 1/2 empty... the service was awful... we waited over 45 minutes for our food... they took one of my friends outside and came back and instead of making a new one, they gave him the same one... it took so long that we had to get our food to go. Yes, I know it's a sit down restaurant and yes we allocated an hour for our order and food.. but it it took almost 1.5 hrs... so yah... not sure if I will return... read more

We were looking for a place that opens on New Year day and this place was one of the few. They have waitlist on Yelp which is always a plus, such a convenient feature. The place is kinda small but cute. It was super busy but they were pretty efficient at sitting us and the service was also very good. Everyone was very friendly for working on New Year day. The food did take awhile to come out though...so i guess the kitchen is not that efficient. The crab cake benedict was really good. Portion was huge. You must get the potatos!!!! We also ordered a matcha latte. I drink matcha regularly and I had a pretty low expectation for matcha at these American brunch places, however, it turned out to be above average actually. You can actually taste the matcha and it was not overwhelmingly sweet. Overall, I would definitely come back here again. Parking can be hard at times though. read more

Literally my favorite go to brunch place. I will say, come early if you don't want to wait and check-in on the iPad. I've come around 10:30AM on a Sunday before and had to wait about 30 min. The best part is there's free parking and lots of shops to look at. My go to foods: - crab cake eggs benedict - sooo good. I get this every single time I come here. It always is delicious. - stuffed French toast - perfect if you're craving something sweet! - chorizo scramble - if you want something more savory, this one is my fav! Can't go wrong. I've also tried the mimosas and they're great too. The potatoes that come with the scramble and eggs Benedict are to die for -- I would come hear just to have those crispy potatoes. read more

Love this place! The food was delicious! Some of the best French toast I've had in a long time. It came with a super yummy cinnamon butter. I also had their potatoes which were thinly sliced and cooked to perfection. I ordered a chicken breast on the side and it was tender and seasoned well. My pomegranate mimosa was tasty. I've been brunching here since it opened up quite a few years ago. It's not a hole in the wall, contrary to a recent reviewer's mis-description. It's nicely decorated inside, bright with ceiling to table level windows, and discretely plays very sweet Harlem renaissance Duke Ellington style jazz, both outside as well as inside. But that particular reviewer did love the food as I usually do. However today, a lapse! I ordered a favorite, the Delmar Crepe. The potatoes were very well done as I ordered it, but unfortunately it was not warm, and in fact a bit cold in the middle. But I was really hungry after swimming and I didn't want to send it back and wait. Then for some reason, this particular waitress suddenly plopped my check in front of me as I was only mid-way through the meal. Literally plopped it and then blared "No rush. Well if it's no rush why rush the check in & in such a discordant fashion? It was at 11 AM on a Wednesday, and not crowded at all like it is on weekends. Perhaps I may order a cappuccino to finish after my meal while checking email or reading a novel as I typically do here on a sunny, non-busy weekday morning here. So of course I didn't leave a tip but hopefully they will read this review and return to their original quality of service as well as to make sure that the potatoes are still hot when they take it off the grill. Not ready to give this place up & I will be back next week I am sure. A regular who also bring friends here. read more

Great place to eat! Impressed with how well they deal with the heavy weekend crowd. I had the crab cake eggs benedict and plain french toast. Both were very good and I wish I had a larger stomach to have consumed every drop. They have bottomless mimosas here which is awesome, seems rare in the East Bay. I'd give this place 5 stars had the server not chastised us for sharing them though -- table of 5, I myself ordered TWO meals, 2 of us ordered bottomless mimosas. My friend gave me some of hers and our server took notice. Spending that much money you should let some things slide, and we definitely didn't abuse the treat my any means. read more

Co-owned by cousins, Jim Masarweh and George Masarweh. They have been operating restaurant Since 1988. Cafe M is there first partnership!

The structure of the bakery leaves a bit to be desired as well, as we found the glass display cases as the only form of menu, so being in the front of the line while still deciding what to order caused some unnecessary anxiety. Regardless of those nitpicks, the baked goods themselves were pretty good! Service was instant, and all of the treats looked delicious--it was hard to choose what we wanted! Our favorites were the Thai Tea and Ube Coconut Mochi Donuts. Both had really strong flavors--the Ube in particular was very clear in comparison to most other Ube desserts in my experience. The textures of the mochi donuts were really well done too, with soft exteriors and chewy, glutinous interiors. The same can be said about the Mochi Muffins, though with crunchier parts around the edges. We found the contrast of textures to actually work really well! However, the flavors of the Muffins were lacking a bit--the Red Velvet didn't stand out much, with the frosting tasting a bit too sweet, and while the Five Spice had a really interesting flavor, it was also a bit too sweet, drowning out the more unique citrusy flavor. Overall, however, all four of the goods we had were enjoyable eats, and would definitely return some time to try out other flavors!

We had gotten 3 quotes already from other restaurants via phone. Making us drive 45 mins just to get a quote is a total waste of time. Especially if we can't afford it. So my daughter called again, left a VM explaining we couldn't come in person due to time constraints, and again asked for a quote. No reply. We waited a few days and called again. No reply. Finally we got a voicemail from the owner saying that she didn't like my daughter's attitude ?!!! Apparently you're not allowed to ask this restaurant how much they charge for events unless you're face to face. This lady has absolutely no idea how to run a restaurant. There was no one waiting behind us, but we were met with an inflexible, robotic "sorry, we're closed." No one was overtly rude, but the interaction felt rigid and mechanical, as if following procedure mattered more than acknowledging the people standing in front of them. It would not have taken much effort to accept one last order from a loyal couple with a newborn--especially since nobody else was waiting behind us. In the end, Standard Fare is closing exactly as it operated: precise, rigid, and lacking warmth. Hopefully the next business in this location will treat its customers with a bit more empathy.

The burger, which is described on Door Dash as "char grilled, fresh ground brisket and short rib burger, served on a toasted brioche fun with crisp lettuce, tomato onion marmalade and garlic aioli" was thick and incredibly flavorful. I couldn't stop eating that, either. It was that good. I ordered it medium, and it was pretty pink, but it was sooooooo flavorful, and all the toppings worked well together. I didn't get any cheese on it because I wanted to try to burger by itself and not mask it with cheese. I might try adding cheese next time, but honestly the burger is so good, I almost wouldn't want to cover up its flavor with cheese. Oh, I almost forgot. When you order on Door Dash, you can opt to have them include a small side of their chocolate-chipotle bbq sauce, and I highly recommend that you get it. It's a really interesting flavor and is good for dipping the fries in. I didn't try putting it on the burger, but that might be good, too. The mac and cheese was OK. It's important to note that I enjoyed the flavor but it is more of an eggy consistency than a saucy mac and cheese if that makes sense. It has a nice kick of black pepper, which I liked, though. The vegetarian fried rice was also fine but could have used a little salt. All that to say, don't be like me and procrastinate, get the Cali Alley Burger and fries ASAP.

I went here for brunch on Sunday with my boyfriend and I had high hopes for a new spot on Fourth Street because I was disappointed in Betty's souffle pancakes and noisy atmosphere. Cafe M is amazing! We were greeted by a lovely young man who was super nice and attentive. The wait was quite short for a Sunday brunch. I love Eggs Benedict and had not had it in a while due to my new nutrition plan, but I decided that I could not resist Cafe M's version. First we were immediately greeted by a pretty waitress who was quick and efficient. I ordered a large cappuccino and was delighted by the thick foam and strong espresso. The cups were huge! I felt like I was in a homey B&B. The Eggs Benedict was fantastic! The eggs were perfectly poached, the homemade Hollandaise had a nice tart flavor and instead of Canadian bacon they used a wonderful smoked ham that was tender and plentiful. The potatoes were seasoned and cooked perfectly. I will definitely go back. Next time I want to try the cinnamon french toast and the bacon. The service was nice and quick and I really felt welcome. I remember the first time I ever tasted Strawberry Jalapeno Jam. I was 9. It was my first night at my Opa and Ona's pepper packing factory in the humid and exotic township of Detroit. Opa summoned me for snack time with a shrill whistle from his Tawanga Flute. After a quick pepper platter he fiercely commanded me to "take these strawberries across the pepper masher to your Ona and so help me Christ if you eat any of them you will wake up with less teeth than a Bull Finch and blinder than a Cuttlefish." Now, being the go-getting eager to pleaser I was, I rushed across the precarious catwalk awkwardly balancing a 40 gallon tub of vine-ripened strawberries. Well, now I understand WHY they have to do the living social deal.... - Waitresses are nice but the service is quite slow.. I ordered a glass of OJ but they didnt give me the straw. I asked the waitress to get me a straw but it didn't come until 15 minutes later. - Food portion is big and filling but the taste is JUST OK. I believe they have the signature sauce on all of their Benedicts but it's just not as good as what some other reviews said here. I ordered a crab cake benedicts. The crab cake tastes like tuna salad (I actually do like Tuna Salad so it's ok) and the eggs are little overcooked. I went to this place for dinner back when it first opened, and it was good, but that really wasn't quite the right niche for the location. Brunch definitely seems to be the ticket. It's well located on 4th Street, a great option where it's actually possible to get a table, nice outdoor dining, and the food is good, not great, but solidly good, and for brunch, the prices are really great. The two biggest things going in its favor: it is family friendly (a bonus for me at least) and has a fairly newly added kid's menu AND (drum roll) they have the absolute BEST milkshakes I've ever had in my entire life. They must be made from ice cream, heavy whipping cream, soft fluffy clouds, and sugar gently spun by a choir of angels. Honestly, I don't know what they put in those things, but they must be around 12,000,000 calories each. They are out of this world, really. Having read the other 28 glowing reviews of Cafe M I can only assume that the 2 or 3 negative reviews were the result of someone with a mountain of insecurities venting impotently via an anonymous soapbox at a randomly chosen target or one of the East Bay's entitled and charmless over-aged adolescents seeking revenge on the waitress who didn't respond to his or her lack of basic civilities with the proper amount of obsequiousness. Last Sunday, me and my girlfriend had brunch at Cafe M and I can honestly say that it was an unqualified delight. our hostess was gracious and cheerful, the waitress both sweet and professional - and yes, lovely - and the food was delicious. It arrived promptly and was very reasonably priced. Even the view of the quiet sidewalk outside and the people strolling in the sun added to my enjoyment. I had an amazing experience at this place and I'm already falling in love with it. I decided to take my sisters with me as they were in town and boy, it turned out to be one of the best decisions I've made in a while. Our server was simply fantastic and went out of her way to make our experience even better; I only wish I could recall her name to give her a shoutout. As for the food, it was exquisite. I ordered the Blackstone egg benedict and it was cooked to perfection. My sister had the chicken pesto crepe which were so flavorful and delicious. My other sister opted for the pancakes and she couldn't stop raving about how fluffy and scrumptious they were. We were lucky to have a beautiful day outside which added to the overall experience. Everything seemed to be on the expensive side, making it difficult to justify the cost for what we received. The food, unfortunately, was not great either. While it looked visually appealing, the taste was lacking. I was disappointed with the lack of flavors and variety in the dishes. For the price we paid, I expected more. I also noticed that the service was a bit slow and our order took longer than expected to arrive. It seemed like the staff was overwhelmed and not handling the busy restaurant very well. This definitely affected our overall experience. The prices are just too high for the quality of food and service provided. A very cozy and homey restaurant; I've loved it since the first time I came in; the people are kind, and the cuisine is fantastic; in any case, it's quite delightful. We ordered a seafood stew with bread, and the bread dipped hall stew is to die for. The owner claims it took several hours to prepare, and it makes me feel like I'm under the sea. We also ordered the Cajun barbecue shrimp with greens, and I must say that the shrimp is absolutely fresh, and the size of the greens is large enough for two people to share, as well as the dressing with the rice. Looking for great places to go eat in Berkeley? I say get yourselves over the Cafe M! Located in a nice mellow spot near all the activity on 4th. I ate the eggs benedict over a seared salmon steak. It was incredible. My taste buds were doing flips!! My girlfriend ordered the gluten free blue corn pancakes.
